An alternative piston type compressor apparatus comprising, in association with a spring loaded inlet valve, pressure responsive means operable to displace said valve from its seat and keep it unseated to connect the compressor cylinder to the atmosphere, and a regulator valve that when the pressure in an associated reservoir reaches a predetermined value, connects the reservoir with the pressure-responsive means to effect opening of the inlet valve to discharge the compressor, said regulator valve including a ball or element equivalent valve loaded or spring designed to close against the direction of air flow and which, when a seat is applied, is received with intimate adjustment in a bore enlarged from the seat structure, in such a way that except when said valve element is on its seat, the fluid pressure acts on the total diameter of said element.
