Abstract
1,006,806. Unloading air compressors. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. June 10, 1964 [July 26, 1963], No. 29632/63. Heading F1N. [Also in Division F2] An air compressor is unloaded by a governor 10 having a piston 75 subjected at all times to the outlet or reservoir pressure through a passage 85, the operation of the governor being such that when the pressure reaches a certain valve a rod 79 integral with the piston moves to open the compressor inlet valve 29, and when the pressure falls to a lower value the piston moves to permit the inlet valve to close. In operation the outlet pressure passes from the passage 85 through an annular groove 87 and a radial passage 91 in the piston 75 into a blind bore 77 in the piston 75 which, as shown, is closed by a tapered portion 83 of a cover plate 73. When the outlet pressure reaches the certain value, the piston moves away from the tapered portion 83 against the action of a spring 81 so that pressure then acts over the whole area of the piston thereby causing a conical surface 93 on the piston to close an aperture 92 in a casing 71. A bleed passage 94 in the piston allows the pressure acting on either side thereof to balance and since the aperture 92 is larger in area than the bore 77 the piston will not move upwardly until the outlet pressure falls.
