SE TRANSMITE UNA SEÑAL DE MICROONDA A TRAVES DE O REFLEJADA DESDE UNA MUESTRA DE POLVILLO DE CENIZAS Y SE DETERMINA (6, 9, 2, 36) LA ATENUACION O CAMBIO DE FASE DE LA SEÑAL RECIBIDA POR UN DETECTOR/DETECTORES (7, 11, 34, 35) CON RESPECTO A LA SEÑAL INCIDENTE Y SE UTILIZA PARA FACILITAR UNA MEDICION DEL CONTENIDO DE CARBONO NO QUEMADO. LOS DETECTORES (7, 11, 34, 35) PUEDEN SER MEDIOS DE ANTENA QUE TAMBIEN LANZAN LA SEÑAL INCIDENTE O PUEDE TRATARSE DE UN APARATO TOTALMENTE INDEPENDIENTE. UNA REALIZACION PREFERIDA COMPRENDE UN OSCILADOR DE MICROONDAS (30) PARA LANZAR LA SEÑAL DE MICROONDAS EN UNA MUESTRA DE POLVILLO DE CENIZAS EN UNA CAVIDAD RESONANTE DE MICROONDAS (33).
