Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an electrolysis system and a reduction process for carbon dioxide utilization.
  • CO 2 is converted to carbohydrates by photosynthesis. This process, which is divided into many steps in time and space on a molecular level, is very difficult to replicate on a large scale.
  • the most efficient method compared to pure photocatalysis is the electrochemical reduction of CO 2.
  • this process converts CO 2 into a carbohydrate by supplying electrical energy, which can be obtained from renewable energy sources such as wind or sun. converted into a higher energy product (CO, CH 4 , C 2 H 4 etc.).
  • the amount of energy required for this reduction ideally corresponds to the combustion energy of the fuel and should preferably only come from renewable sources or use electricity that cannot be taken from the grid at the time.
  • renewable energy is not available continuously, but currently only at times of strong sunlight and strong wind. This situation will become even more pronounced in the near future with the further expansion of so-called renewable energy.
  • the C0 2 electrolysis is carried out in carbonate or hydrogen carbonate-containing electrolytes in molar concentration.
  • Gaseous products CO, C 2 H 4 , CH 4 , H 2 etc .
  • products that can be converted into the gas phase ethanol, Propanol
  • the electrode material Depending on the electrode material, other by-products that may be formed are sometimes larger amounts of acids, which cancel out the buffering effect of the carbonate/hydrogen carbonate/ C02 buffer system.
  • the undesirable parasitic hydrogen development increases and the Faraday efficiency of the electrolysis for the production of desired, easily separable target products (ethylene, ethanol, etc.) decreases.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide an electrolysis system and a reduction process for carbon dioxide utilization, which enable an improved production and extraction of valuable materials.
  • a first aspect of the invention relates to an electrolysis system for carbon dioxide utilization, comprising an electrolysis cell with at least one anode, with at least one cathode and with at least one aqueous electrolyte, which is directly or indirectly in operative connection with the anode and/or the cathode, wherein the cathode is assigned at least one access for carbon dioxide (C0 2 ) so that C0 2 can be brought into contact with the cathode for reduction.
  • C0 2 carbon dioxide
  • An improved production and extraction of valuable materials is made possible according to the invention in that the electrolyte in a starting state is at least substantially free of carbonate and hydrogen carbonate and contains at least one dissolved carboxylate.
  • the invention provides that the electrolyte used in the electrolysis system is at least substantially free of carbonate and hydrogen carbonate in the starting state, that is to say after the electrolyte has been prepared or before it has taken part in the reduction process carried out in the electrolysis system for the first time as anolyte and/or catholyte.
  • the term "at least substantially free” is understood in the context of the present disclosure to mean the lowest possible concentration of at most 0.1 mol/l, in particular at most 0.01 mol/l or less.
  • a concentration below the technical detection limit, i.e. a complete freedom from carbonate and hydrogen carbonate is generally often technically impossible or not reasonably achievable due to CO 2 from the environment dissolving in the electrolyte, but is also not absolutely necessary.
  • the electrolyte according to the invention instead contains at least one dissolved carboxylate, i.e. a salt of an organic carboxylic acid.
  • the invention is based on the finding that during the electrolytic utilization of carbon dioxide using the electrolysis system according to the invention, which can also be referred to as an electrolyzer, carboxylates such as formate and acetate are formed.
  • carboxylates such as formate and acetate are formed.
  • hydroxide ions For neutral molecules such as ethylene, ethanol or CO, a corresponding number of hydroxide ions are formed according to the necessary electrons. For singly negatively charged For species such as formate and acetate, one hydroxide ion less is formed, since the charge is compensated by the anion formed. For species with a double negative charge, two hydroxide ions less are formed, etc. The hydroxide ions formed react with excess C0 2 to form carbonate or hydrogen carbonate, which is released into the electrolyte:
  • Formate, acetate and/or other carboxylates which form over time during a reduction process carried out with the aid of the electrolysis system according to the invention accumulate accordingly in the electrolyte over time.
  • These singly or multiply negatively charged ionic charge carriers then move, for example in a system with a membrane permeable to anions (AEM membrane), to the anode and there in turn release CO 2 , where they are neutralized by protons formed at the anode to form formic acid, acetic acid and/or corresponding other carboxylic acids.
  • AEM membrane membrane permeable to anions
  • the carboxylate formed and the carboxylate present or originally used are the same, any separation problems can be avoided particularly reliably.
  • the carboxylic acids produce other uncharged valuable substances in addition to methane and ethylene, which, in contrast to salts, can be separated relatively easily from the remaining electrolyte.
  • the electrolyte used in the unused starting or initial state should preferably contain no or at least as little HCO 3- /CO 3 2 - as possible. Due to the stoichiometric reaction, the HCO 3 -/CO 3 2- concentration in the electrolyte remains low even during its use in electrolysis, since HCO 3 -/CO 3 2 " is decomposed back to C0 2 immediately after formation at the interface by the protons formed at the anode.
  • the electrolysis system according to the invention therefore offers numerous advantages. It avoids buffer breakdown due to the formation of carboxylic acids (e.g. acetic acid) because these can be distilled off as free, uncharged compounds or separated in another way.
  • a/an should be read as an indefinite article within the scope of this disclosure, i.e., unless expressly stated otherwise, always as “at least one/at least one”. Conversely, “a/an” can also be understood as “only one/only one”. Regardless of grammatical gender of a particular term includes persons with male, female or other gender identity.
  • the at least one carboxylate is selected from a group comprising salts of linear, branched, cyclic or heterocyclic, aliphatically saturated or aliphatically unsaturated or aromatic, substituted or unsubstituted organic monocarboxylic acids, dicarboxylic acids, tricarboxylic acids or polycarboxylic acids and any mixtures thereof.
  • a group comprising salts of linear, branched, cyclic or heterocyclic, aliphatically saturated or aliphatically unsaturated or aromatic, substituted or unsubstituted organic monocarboxylic acids, dicarboxylic acids, tricarboxylic acids or polycarboxylic acids and any mixtures thereof.
  • generally mixed or pure salts of linear, branched, cyclic, heterocyclic, saturated, unsaturated, aromatic substituted and/or unsubstituted carboxylic acids with one or more carboxyl (ate) group(s) are suitable. This includes, for example,
  • Aliphatic, linear or branched, saturated monocarboxylic acids are particularly preferred. This allows the properties of the electrolyte to be optimally adapted to the respective application and the expected (by-product) spectrum.
  • the at least one carboxylate is selected depending on a by-product spectrum of the cathode. This means that the carboxylate is selected such that it corresponds to a carboxylic acid which is within the scope of the C0 2 - electrolysis. This creates an optimal buffer system in situ during electrolysis.
  • the carboxylate is selected from salts of formic acid, acetic acid, propanoic acid, malonic acid, n-butanoic acid, isobutanoic acid, n-pentanoic acid, isopentanoic acid, sec-pentanoic acid, tert-pentanoic acid, oxalic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, pimelic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid, malic acid, citric acid, isocitric acid, propane-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid, trimesic acid, ethenebis(oxyethenenitrilo)tetraacetic acid, benzoic acid, terephthalic acid, salicylic acid or anthranilic acid, and any mixtures thereof.
  • Salts of formic acid and/or salts of acetic acid are particularly preferred, since formic acid and/or acetic acid are generally formed in significant amounts
  • the electrolyte in the starting state contains starter cations which are selected from alkali cations, in particular K+ and/or Cs+, alkaline earth cations and/or ammonium ions and/or ammonium compounds, in particular alkylammonium compounds and/or cyclic ammonium compounds and/or mono-, di-, tri- and/or tetraethanolammonium compounds.
  • the electrolyte contains starter cations after preparation or before it has taken part in the reduction process carried out in the electrolysis system for the first time as anolyte and/or catholyte.
  • the starter cations can be alkali and/or alkaline earth ions, with K+ and/or Cs+ being preferred since they have a particularly positive effect on the Faraday efficiency of hydrocarbon formation.
  • the starting cations can be added to the electrolyte in the simplest form as a counterion of the carboxylate used, for example in the form of CH 3 COOK, and/or as a separate salt with a correspondingly suitable counteranion.
  • a concentration of the starting cations in the electrolyte is between 50 mol% and 100 mol% based on a concentration of the at least one carboxylate in the electrolyte.
  • the concentration of the starting cations can be reduced in the course of the electrolysis process in relation to the concentration of the carboxylate anion used to a maximum of 0.01%. Percentages are generally to be regarded as mole percents in the context of the present disclosure, unless otherwise stated. However, it is particularly preferred to control and/or regulate the concentration ratio to 40 mol% to 60 mol%, since in this range the Faraday efficiency of the hydrocarbon formation does not decrease or only decreases insignificantly. As soon as a predetermined concentration ratio limit, which can be determined continuously or at specific times, is violated, the electrolysis system can interrupt the electrolysis and/or generate an optical, acoustic and/or haptic indication of the violation of the concentration ratio limit.
  • the electrolyte is at least essentially free of Ni, Fe, Au and/or Pt ions in the starting state. As has been recognized, these cations usually have a negative effect on the cathode and lead to reaction disturbances and reduced yield.
  • the expression "at least essentially free” does not necessarily have to mean 0.0 mol.%, but that an initial concentration of these undesirable ions of at most 0.1 mol/l and preferably of at most 0.01 mol/l or less can be present in the electrolyte. Active addition when mixing the electrolyte, apart from unavoidable impurities and the like, should generally be avoided.
  • the cathode is a gas diffusion electrode along which the CO 2 can pass, at least in certain areas.
  • a gas diffusion electrode typically consists of three main components: a porous carrier material, a catalytic material which is applied to the surface of the porous carrier material and which catalyzes the desired electrochemical reactions, and a current collector which normally consists of an electrically conductive layer which makes electrical contact with the electrochemical cell and enables charge transfer.
  • the porous structure of the GDE distributes the CO 2 evenly over the entire surface of the electrode. This enables improved reaction kinetics and reduces possible local overreactions.
  • the porous structure of the GDE also enables efficient use of the catalytic material and leads to improved electrochemical reactions.
  • GDEs also allow the passage of gases and liquids with low pressure loss. This is particularly important for G02 reduction, where smooth gas flow is required.
  • the porous structure of the GDE also allows effective heat dissipation, preventing overheating.
  • GDEs allow a high degree of flexibility in the choice of the catalyst used, depending on the specific requirements of the application. This enables optimal adaptation to the desired reactions and improves performance.
  • GDEs can be manufactured relatively easily in different sizes and shapes to meet the requirements of the respective electrolysis system. They can therefore be scaled up for both small laboratory-scale systems and large industrial plants.
  • the cathode is selected from a group comprising tin-, lead-, silver- or copper-based cathodes. This allows particularly high yields of carboxylic acids (Sn, Pb) or carboxylates (Ag, Cu) can be achieved.
  • a particularly long operating time of the electrolyte is achieved in a further embodiment by the fact that the pH value of the electrolyte in the starting state is in an alkaline range, in particular between 10 and 8.
  • the exact pH value depends in particular on the carboxylate used and its concentration. This enables a particularly long reaction with high Faraday efficiencies via a buffer effect that is present from the outset or at least sets in in situ, since the pH value of the electrolyte can drop very slowly from the alkaline starting range to an acidic pH lower limit, at which hydrogen evolution then dominates.
  • the pH lower limit is typically between 4 and 5. As soon as this is reached, appropriate countermeasures can be taken to increase the pH value again.
  • An electrolysis cell with a cation-permeable membrane (CEM membrane) is preferably used.
  • the electrolyte in the starting state comprises a buffer system made up of at least one carboxylate and at least one carboxylic acid, wherein a molar ratio between the carboxylic acid and the carboxylate is preferably between 4:1 and 1:4, in particular approximately 1:1.
  • the carboxylic acid used can in principle be the corresponding acid of the carboxylate used or another carboxylic acid or a mixture of corresponding and non-corresponding carboxylic acids.
  • the carboxylic acid can be selected independently of the carboxylate from the same compounds mentioned above as the carboxylate.
  • the lower the molar proportion of carboxylic acid in the starting state the longer the electrolyte can be used.
  • the molar proportion of carboxylic acid in the starting state can therefore also be zero.
  • the anode and the cathode are separated from one another by an ion-conducting membrane, in particular a cation-conducting membrane, and that the electrolyte is preferably arranged in a gap between the cathode and the membrane, in particular when the cathode is designed as a gas diffusion electrode.
  • the electrolysis cell is optionally designed in a 2-gap architecture (two-gaps architecture) or a 1-gap architecture (one-gap architecture).
  • the electrolyte according to the invention can be arranged in at least one gap and optionally flow through the gap in order to continuously remove reaction products and to be able to operate the electrolysis system for longer.
  • the electrolysis cell is preferably designed in the 1-gap architecture, in which the gap is arranged between the cathode and the membrane, while the anode is directly connected to the side of the membrane facing away from the cathode, since this enables an inherent CO 2 separation in the gap.
  • a so-called "zero gap” electrolysis cell is used, in which the anode and the cathode are arranged without a gap on opposite sides of the membrane, while the electrolyte is arranged on the side of the anode opposite the membrane.
  • Other, possibly combined cell arrangements, e.g. with a combination of anion- and cation-conducting or bipolar membranes, can also be provided, but are less preferred due to their complexity or, in some cases, their lower energy efficiency.
  • the electrolysis system comprises a separation device which can be fluidically coupled to the electrolysis cell and by means of which at least one carboxylic acid contained in the electrolyte can be derivatized and/or at least partially separated from the electrolyte, in particular by distillation.
  • the electrolysis system has a Separation device for partially or completely separating the carboxylic acid(s) present in the electrolyte, wherein the separation device can be or is coupled fluidically to the electrolysis cell, so that the electrolyte can be passed continuously or batchwise from the electrolysis cell into the separation device.
  • the separation can be carried out, for example, by distillation.
  • the carboxylic acid(s) are first derivatized in the separation device, for example esterified with ethanol, in order to lower their boiling point and facilitate separation.

Description

Beschreibung
, Modern Aspects of Electrochemistry, Springer, New York, 2008, pp . 89-189) sind Faradayef f izienzen an unterschiedlichen Metallkathoden zu entnehmen.
2 CO2 + 5 H2O + 8 e- CH3COO- + 7 OH~ CO2 + H2O + 2 e- HCOO“ + OH~ 2 H2O + 2 e- H2 + 2 OH~ CO2 + H2O + 2 e- CO + 2 OH~

Messkurve 82 Elektrolyt 0,5 M KHCO3+0,5 M KOAc
Messkurve 84 Elektrolyt 1 M KHCO3 Messkurve 86 Elektrolyt 0,25 M KHCO3+0,75 M KOAc Messkurve 88 Elektrolyt 1 M KOAc
Messkurve 90 Elektrolyt 1 M KOAc
Messkurve 92 Elektrolyt 0,25 M KHCO3+0,75 M KOAc
Messkurve 94 Elektrolyt 1 M KHCO3
Messkurve 96 Elektrolyt 0,5 M KHCO3+0,5 M KOAc
Messkurve 98 Elektrolyt 0,75 M KHCO3+0,25 M KOAc
Dabei bedeuten: Messkurve 100 Elektrolyt 1 M KHCO3

Messkurve 106 Elektrolyt 0,25 M KHCO3+0,75 M KOAc Me ss kurve 108 + 1 M KOAc
Dabei bedeuten: Messkurve 110 Elektrolyt 1 M KHCO3 Messkurve 112 Elektrolyt 0,75 M KHCO3+0,25 M KOAc Messkurve 114 Elektrolyt 0,5 M KHCO3+0,5 M KOAc Messkurve 116 Elektrolyt 0,25 M KHCO3+0,75 M KOAc Messkurve 118 Elektrolyt 1 M KOAc

Messkurve 124 Elektrolyt 0,5 M KHCO3+0,5 M KOAc
Messkurve 126 Elektrolyt 0,25 M KHCO3+0,75 M KOAc
Messkurve 128 Elektrolyt 1 M KOAc
Dabei bedeuten: Messkurve 130 Elektrolyt 1 M KHCO3 Messkurve 132 Elektrolyt 0,75 M KHCO3+0,25 M KOAc Messkurve 134 Elektrolyt 0,5 M KHCO3+0,5 M KOAc Messkurve 136 Elektrolyt 0,25 M KHCO3+0,75 M KOAc Messkurve 138 Elektrolyt 1 M KOAc
