Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a kraft paper with a basis weight according to ISO 536 in the range from 60 g/m 2 to 120 g/m 2 , in particular from 70 g/m 2 to 110 g/m 2 , a density in the range from 680 kg/m 3 to 720 kg/m 3 and a tensile strength index in the machine direction according to ISO 1924-3 between 79 kNm/kg and 98 kNm/kg, which optionally has a coating and/or an auxiliary element on at least one side, and a paper sack made therefrom.
  • Kraft paper has been widely used for many years, especially in the packaging sector, and is characterized by a variety of positive properties. In particular, it is stable, relatively tear-resistant, relatively insensitive to moisture and, despite these properties, has sufficient air permeability to be used, for example, as bags for building materials, food and the like.
  • kraft paper in particular has the advantage over many other types of paper currently in use that, with the exception of a few additives, it is a natural material that is reusable, recyclable or, if it does not contain other components such as plastic coatings and the like, compostable.
  • Kraft paper is usually made with a very high pulp content. In addition to pulp, all common additives such as starch and glue are contained in kraft paper. Due to its high strength, kraft paper is used primarily in industrial applications for bags such as cement bags, sandbags and the like.
  • the WO 2015/035434 A1 describes a water-soluble sack paper which, in addition to auxiliary substances such as surfactants, contains in particular long-fiber softwood fibers.
  • the EP 1 818 451 A1 a wrapping paper and a paper bag made from it is to be taken which at least partially has a net structure and discrete surface islands enclosed by the net structure, which paper has a higher porosity for a given strength.
  • the EP 3 184 296 A1 describes a multi-layer paper bag in which a plastic film is inserted between two layers of paper and which bag is designed to be hydrophobic.
  • kraft paper in order for kraft paper to be fully recyclable, it must not have any plastic coatings or plastic inserts or other non-degradable components, as is common in papers that come into contact with moisture, for example.
  • Packaging materials without plastic linings or coatings must not only meet requirements such as being sufficiently permeable to air to allow air to escape during filling, but also have sufficient elasticity to ensure that they do not tear when filled with materials with a high specific weight, such as cement, due to the shaping work or deformation that occurs when a sack is placed down or subjected to pressure or dropped onto the paper.
  • kraft paper is increasingly being used as shopping bags or garbage bags in order to replace non-recyclable plastic bags or non-compostable plastic bags with "natural materials" as far as possible.
  • the paper bags currently in use have the disadvantage that they are not compostable or biodegradable due to linings that are currently indispensable, or, if such coatings are not present, they are not sufficiently stable to avoid immediate tearing under unexpected stress or if they contain objects with corners and edges.
  • the aim of the invention is to provide a kraft paper that is sufficiently stable not to tear under load, whose wet strength is such that there is no risk of tearing even when filled with moist materials and that is completely degradable without the use of undesirable coatings.
  • a kraft paper according to the present invention is essentially characterized in that the kraft paper is formed from a pulp with an average pulp fiber length of 2.2 mm to 2.7 mm with a minimum pulp content in the kraft paper of at least 96% by weight, preferably at least 97% by weight, and that a pore volume of the uncoated kraft paper measured with mercury porosimetry according to ISO 15901-1 is from 200 ⁇ l/g to 220 ml/g, that layers merging into one another with differing porosity measured with mercury porosimetry according to ISO 15901-1 are formed in the thickness direction of the paper, and that at least one region has pores with a pore diameter of less than or equal to 0.3 ⁇ m and that an average value of the pore volume of this region or these regions is less than or equal to 5.5 ⁇ l/g with mercury porosimetry according to ISO 15901-1.
  • Such kraft paper can be easily recycled or composted due to the fact that it has an extremely high pulp content of at least 96% by weight and due to the fact that no coating is provided. Furthermore, due to the special design with a pore volume of between 200 ⁇ l/g and 220 ml/g, it has sufficient gas permeability for a bag made from it to be filled quickly, while at the same time the paper is stable enough to hold heavy, bulky and damp objects in the paper without it accidentally tearing or being destroyed. Furthermore, due to the extremely high pulp content and the fact that it is free of a coating, such paper is 100% degradable.
  • the kraft paper is designed in such a way that the layers that merge into one another in the thickness direction of the paper are formed with differing porosity measured by mercury porosimetry according to ISO 15901-1.

  • the porosity on one surface can be significantly smaller than on the other surface, which is favored on the one hand by the production process, in which there is usually a higher accumulation of shorter fiber components on the screen side of the paper and thus a lower porosity is formed than on the side facing away from the screen.
  • a porosity gradient is also dependent on other factors and can be controlled, whereby a paper is produced that has excellent porosity on the one hand and on the other hand but is easy to print on.
  • the side with the lower porosity according to ISO 15901-1 is then selected as the side to be printed on. This means that the kraft paper can be reliably printed on using standard printing processes such as flexographic printing, inkjet printing or similar, without the printing inks fading or running.
  • the invention is designed such that at least one area has pores with a pore diameter of less than or equal to 0.3 ⁇ m and that an average value of the porosity of this area or areas is less than or equal to 5.5 ⁇ l/g measured using mercury porosimetry according to ISO 15901-1.
  • coating is understood to mean any material applied to the surface of a kraft paper according to the present invention, such as inks, dyes, gumming or the like.
  • a coating extends over only a small part of the surface of the paper or up to 50% of the area is covered.
  • a coating according to the present invention differs fundamentally from additional layers of plastic, for example, applied over the entire surface, as was common in the prior art, but always only affects an area of the surface of the paper and does not change the properties, such as tear resistance, water solubility or air permeability of the paper and/or the bag made from it, or only changes them very slightly.
