Die Erfindung betrifft einen Elektrolyseur zur elektrochemischen Nutzung von Kohlenstoffdioxid umfassend wenigstens eine Elektrolysezelle, wobei die Elektrolysezelle einen Anodenraum mit einer Anode und einen Kathodenraum mit einer Kathode umfasst, zwischen dem Anodenraum und dem Kathodenraum eine erste Kationen-permeable Membran angeordnet ist und die Anode direkt an die erste Membran grenzt und zwischen der ersten Membran und der Kathode eine ein Anionen-selektives Polymer umfassende Schicht angeordnet ist.

Verfahren und Vorrichtung zur elektrochemischen Nutzung von Kohlenstoffdioxid
Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren und einen Elektrolyseur zur elektrochemischen Nutzung von Kohlenstoffdioxid .
Die Nachfrage nach Strom schwankt im tagezeitlichen Verlauf stark. Auch die Stromerzeugung schwankt mit zunehmendem Anteil an Strom aus erneuerbaren Energien während des Tagesverlaufs. Um ein Überangebot an Strom in Zeiten mit viel Sonne und starkem Wind bei niedriger Nachfrage nach Strom ausglei¬ chen zu können, benötigt man regelbare Kraftwerke oder Spei- eher, um diese Energie zu speichern.
Eine der derzeitig angedachten Lösungen ist das Umwandeln von elektrischer Energie in Wertprodukte, insbesondere Plattform¬ chemikalien oder Synthesegas. Eine mögliche Technik zur Um- Wandlung der elektrischen Energie in Wertprodukte stellt die Elektrolyse dar.
Die Elektrolyse von Wasser zu Wasserstoff und Sauerstoff stellt eine im Stand der Technik bekannte Methode dar. Aber auch die Elektrolyse von Kohlenstoffdioxid zu Wertprodukten, wie insbesondere Kohlenstoffmonoxid, Ethylen oder Ameisensäu¬ re wird seit einigen Jahren erforscht und es gibt Bemühungen, ein elektrochemisches System zu entwickeln, das einen Kohlenstoffdioxidstrom entsprechend des wirtschaftlichen Interesses umwandeln kann.
Eine vorteilhafte Bauform einer Elektrolyseeinheit ist ein Niedertemperatur-Elektrolyseur bei dem als Eduktgas Kohlenstoffdioxid mit Hilfe einer Gasdiffusionselektrode in einen Kathodenraum umgesetzt wird. An einer Kathode der elektroche¬ mischen Zelle wird das Kohlenstoffdioxid zu Wertprodukten re¬ duziert und an einer Anode wird Wasser zu Sauerstoff oxi- diert. Aufgrund von Diffusionslimitierungen an der Kathode kann es beim Einsatz eines wässrigen Elektrolyten neben der Bildung von Wertprodukten auch nachteilig zur Bildung von Wasserstoff kommen, da das Wasser des wässrigen Elektrolyten ebenfalls elektrolysiert wird.
Die Bildung von Wasserstoff wird noch begünstigt, wenn eine Protonen-leitende Membran die Kathode direkt berührt. Eine Alternative hierzu ist das Anordnen eines mit wässrigem elektrolytgefülltem Spalts zwischen der protonenleitenden Membran und der Kathode. Als Elektrolyt kann jedoch kein rei¬ nes Wasser verwendet werden, da die Leitfähigkeit des Wassers zu gering wäre und einen nachteilig hohen Spannungsabfall im Spalt zur Folge hätte. Auch das Einsetzen einer Mineralsäure, insbesondere von verdünnter Schwefelsäure, führt zur uner- wünschten Wasserstoffbildung da diese Säuren die Protonenkonzentration an der Kathode nachteilig erhöhen.
Im Stand der Technik wird daher häufig die Leitfähigkeit des Elektrolyten innerhalb des Spalts erhöht, in dem eine Base oder ein Leitsalz zugegeben wird. Nachteilig können sich im nicht sauren Milieu Hydroxidionen bei der Reduktion von Kohlenstoffdioxid an der Kathode bilden. Diese bilden mit weite¬ rem Kohlenstoffdioxid Hydrogencarbonat oder Carbonat . Zusam¬ men mit den Kationen der Base oder den Kationen des Leitsalzes führt dies nachteilig zu schwer löslichen Substanzen, die als Feststoff innerhalb der Elektrolysezelle ausfallen. Dies führt nachteilig zu einer verkürzten Lebensdauer der Elektrolysezelle. Grundsätzlich ist ein Spalt in der Elektrolysezel¬ le wegen des Spannungsabfalls über die Zelle von Nachteil, da der Energiebedarf der Elektrolysezelle steigt und somit die Effizienz sinkt.
Eine weitere Möglichkeit im Stand der Technik die unerwünsch¬ te Bildung von Wasserstoff zu unterdrücken, ist die Wahl ei- nes geeigneten Kathodenmaterials. Das Kathodenmaterial sollte dann eine möglichst hohe Überspannung für die Bildung von Wasserstoff vorweisen. Solche Metalle sind allerdings häufig nachteilig toxisch oder führen zu negativen Umwelteinflüssen. Geeignete Metalle sind Kadmium, Quecksilber und Thallium. Weiterhin führt das Auswählen dieser Metalle als Kathodenma¬ terial nachteilig dazu, dass die Auswahl der Wertprodukte stark eingeschränkt wird: Das Wertprodukt, welches in der Kohlenstoffdioxid-Elektrolysezelle hergestellt wird, hängt maßgeblich vom Reaktionsmechanismus ab, auf den das Kathoden¬ material wiederum einen zentralen Einfluss hat.
Aufgabe der Erfindung ist es demnach, einen Elektrolyseur und ein Verfahren zum Betreiben eines Elektrolyseurs anzugeben, bei dem die Bildung von Wasserstoff vermindert und zeitgleich die Effizienz gesteigert wird.
Die Aufgabe der Erfindung wird mit einem Elektrolyseur gemäß Anspruch 1, einem Verfahren zum Betrieben eines Elektrolyseurs gemäß Anspruch 6 und einem Verfahren zum Herstellen eines Elektrolyseurs gemäß Anspruch 9 gelöst.
Der erfindungsgemäße Elektrolyseur zur elektrochemischen Nut- zung von Kohlenstoffdioxid umfasst wenigstens eine Elektroly¬ sezelle, wobei die Elektrolysezelle einen Anodenraum mit ei¬ ner Anode und einem Kathodenraum mit einer Kathode umfasst. Zwischen dem Anodenraum und dem Kathodenraum ist eine erste Kationen-permeable Membran angeordnet und die Anode grenzt direkt an diese erste Membran. Erfindungsgemäß ist zwischen der ersten Membran und der Kathode eine ein Anionen-selek- tives Polymer umfassende Schicht angeordnet.
Bei dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren zum Betreiben eines
Elektrolyseurs zur elektrochemischen Nutzung von Kohlenstoffdioxid werden folgende Schritte durchgeführt. Zunächst er¬ folgt das Bereitstellen eines Elektrolyseurs mit wenigstens einer Elektrolysezelle, wobei die Elektrolysezelle einen Ano¬ denraum mit einer Anode und einen Kathodenraum mit einer Ka- thode umfasst. Zwischen dem Anodenraum und dem Kathodenraum ist eine erste Kationen-permeable Membran angeordnet. Die Anode grenzt dabei direkt an die erste Membran. Erfindungsge¬ mäß ist zwischen der ersten Membran und der Kathode eine ein Anionen-selektives Polymer umfassende Schicht angeordnet. Diese Schicht dient als Kontaktvermittler zwischen der ersten Membran und der Kathode. Als nächster Schritt erfolgt das Zerlegen von Kohlenstoffdioxid zu einem Produkt an der Katho- de im Kathodenraum. An der Kathode bildet sich dann aus nicht umgesetztem Kohlenstoffdioxid und Hydroxidionen Carbonat oder Hydrogencarbonat . Zeitgleich werden Wasserstoffionen von der Anode durch die erste Membran transportiert. Die Wasserstoff- ionen und das Carbonat oder Hydrogencarbonat reagieren in ei- nem Kontaktbereich der Schicht mit der ersten Membran dann zu Kohlenstoffdioxid und Wasser. Das Kohlenstoffdioxid kann über Flusskanäle oder Poren in der Schicht aus der Elektrolysezel¬ le freigesetzt werden. Vorteilhaft führt das Anionen-selektive Polymer der ersten Schicht dazu, Kationen auszuschließen und lediglich Anionen passieren zu lassen. Dies wird durch immobilisierte positiv geladene Ionen realisiert. Typischerweise werden quartäre Amine NR4 + immobilisiert. Die Gesamtladung der Anionen- selektiven Schicht wird durch mobile Anionen ausgeglichen, die in der wässrigen Phase der Elektrolysezelle gelöst sind, insbesondere Hydroxidionen aber auch Hydrogencarbonationen.
Vorteilhaft wird durch die Anionen-selektive Schicht verhin- dert, dass insbesondere Wasserstoffprotonen an die Kathode gelangen. Die unerwünschte Bildung von Wasserstoff wird so vorteilhaft vermieden. Weiterhin ist die Wahl des Kathodenma¬ terials flexibel möglich da die Anionen-selektive Schicht be¬ reits Wasserstoffprotonen davon abhält, direkt zur Kathode zu gelangen. Vorteilhaft kann damit das Kathodenmaterial in Ab¬ hängigkeit des gewünschten Wertproduktes gewählt werden. Die Kationen-permeable Membran wird typischerweise durch immobi¬ lisierte negative Ladungen, insbesondere durch deprotonierte Sulfonsäurengruppen, realisiert. Ein Ladungsausgleich erfolgt dann durch Protonen oder andere gelöste Kationen, falls vorhanden . Ein unerwünschter aber nicht zu vermeidender Effekt bei der Nutzung der Anionen-selektiven Schicht ist, dass ein Teil des angebotenen Kohlenstoffdioxids mit den Hydroxidionen an der Kathode zu Carbonat oder Hydrogencarbonat reagiert. Dieses Hydrogencarbonat oder Carbonat kann durch die Anionen-selek- tive Schicht transportiert werden. In Kontakt mit den Wasser¬ stoffprotonen, welche die kationenpermeable Membran passieren können, reagiert das Hydrogencarbonat oder das Carbonat zu Kohlenstoffdioxid .
Die Schicht bedeckt die Kathode wenigstens teilweise aber nicht vollständig. Dies hat den Vorteil, dass das so entste¬ hende Kohlenstoffdioxid aus der Elektrolysezelle entweichen kann. Das teilweise Bedecken der Schicht erfolgt ähnlich In- sein auf der Membran. Alternativ kann die Polymerschicht die Kathode zusammenhängend bedecken, wenn ausreichend poröse Strukturen in der Schicht vorhanden sind, um das Kohlenstoff¬ dioxid aus der Elektrolysezelle entweichen lassen zu können. Das so gebildete Kohlenstoffdioxid gelangt dann in den Katho- denraum wo es wiederum zu Wertprodukt umgewandelt werden kann .
Vorteilhaft wird so die Ausbeute des Kohlenstoffdioxids in der Elektrolysezelle erhöht. Weiterhin hat diese Anordnung der Elektrolysezelle den Vorteil, dass bei Betrieb der Elekt¬ rolysezelle mit reinem Wasser an der Kontaktstelle der Anio¬ nen-selektiven Schicht mit der Kationen-selektiven Membran ein Überschuss an Wasser durch ablaufende Neutralisationsre¬ aktionen des Kohlenstoffdioxids aus Hydrogencarbonat und Pro- tonen entsteht. Dieses entstehende Wasser kann in Richtung Kathodenraum entweichen, und sorgt somit für eine gute und gleichmäßige Befeuchtung.
In einer weiteren vorteilhaften Ausgestaltung und Weiterbil- dung der Erfindung wird die Oberfläche der ersten Membran in einem Bereich von 20% bis zu 85% von der Schicht bedeckt. In diesem Bereich ist gewährleistet, dass die Polymerschicht die Kathode von der Kationen-Permeablen Membran trennt, aber zeitgleich Kanäle oder Poren vorhanden sind, um vorteilhaft das Kohlenstoffdioxid und Wasser entweichen zu lassen. Dieser Bereich bezieht sich auf Schichten, welche ein nicht poröses Polymer umfassen. Es ist aber alternativ möglich, dass die Schicht ein poröses Polymer umfasst. In diesem Fall kann die Oberfläche der ersten Membran bis zu 100%, also vollständig, mit der Schicht bedeckt sein, da Kohlenstoffdioxid und Wasser dann durch Poren entweichen können. In einer weiteren vorteilhaften Ausgestaltung und Weiterbildung der Erfindung umfasst die Kathode wenigstens eins der Elemente Silber, Kupfer, Blei, Indium, Zinn oder Zink. Die Auswahl des Kathodenmaterials ermöglicht vorteilhaft eine Auswahl der entstehenden Wertprodukte in der Elektrolysezel- le . Insbesondere kann beim Einsatz einer Silberkathode Koh¬ lenstoffmonoxid hergestellt werden, beim Einsatz einer Kup¬ ferkathode Ethylen und bei Einsatz einer Bleikathode Ameisen¬ säure . In einer weiteren vorteilhaften Ausgestaltung und Weiterbildung der Erfindung umfasst die Kathode eine Gasdiffusions¬ elektrode. Als Gasdiffusionselektrode wird eine gut elektro¬ nisch leitfähige, poröse Katalysatorstruktur, die teilweise mit dem angrenzenden Membranmaterial benetzt ist verstanden. Verbleibende Porenräume sind bei der Gasdiffusionselektrode zur Gas-Seite hin geöffnet. Die Gasdiffusionselektrode ermög¬ licht vorteilhaft das Eindiffundieren des Kohlenstoffdioxids und das Ausdiffundieren des Kohlenstoffmonoxids aus der
Elektrode und sorgt dafür, dass die Ausbeute des Kohlenstoff- monoxids dadurch vorteilhaft erhöht ist.
In einer weiteren vorteilhaften Ausgestaltung und Weiterbildung der Erfindung wird das freigesetzte Kohlenstoffdioxid, neben dem Wasser, als Edukt zurück in den Kathodenraum ge- führt. Vorteilhaft kann in beim Einsatz einer Gasdiffusions¬ elektrode das freigesetzte Kohlenstoffdioxid durch die Gas¬ diffusionselektrode zurück in den Kathodenraum diffundieren. Das Zurückführen über eine externe Leitung kann zusätzlich erfolgen, ist aber nicht zwingend notwendig.
In einer weiteren vorteilhaften Ausgestaltung und Weiterbil- dung der Erfindung wird der Elektrolyseur mit reinem Wasser betrieben. Als reines Wasser wird in Wasser verstanden, welches eine Leitfähigkeit von weniger als 1 mS/cm aufweist. Vorteilhaft wird durch den Einsatz des reinen Wassers vermie¬ den, dass Salze oder Karbonate während der Elektrolyse aus- fallen. Vorteilhaft verlängert dies die Lebensdauer und er¬ höht die Effizienz der Elektrolysezelle.
Bei einem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren zum Herstellen eines Elektrolyseurs mit einer Anionen-selektiven Polymerschicht an der Kathode wird die Kathode mit Anionen-selektivem Polymer imprägniert. Insbesondere erfolgt das Imprägnieren über ein Tauchverfahren oder durch Besprühen der Kathode mit Anionen- selektivem Polymer. Weitere Ausgestaltungsformen und weitere Merkmale der Erfindung werden anhand der folgenden Figur näher erläutert.
Figur 1 zeigt eine Elektrolysezelle mit einer Kathode, einer Anionen-selektiven Polymerschicht und einer Anode. Weiterhin zeigt Figur 1 Konzentrationsprofile von Protonen und
Hydroxidionen für den Betrieb mit reinem Wasser.
Figur 1 zeigt ein Ausführungsbeispiel des Elektrolyseurs mit einer Elektrolysezelle 1, einem Kathodenraum 2 und einem Ano- denraum 3. In dem Anodenraum 3 befindet sich eine Kationenselektive Membran 4 an die direkt eine Anode 5 aufgebracht ist. Die Kationen-selektive Membran 4 ist insbesondere durch das Immobilisieren negativer Ladungen, in diesem Beispiel mittels deprotonierten Sulfonsäuregruppen, Kationen-selektiv, d.h. dass überwiegend Kationen die Membran passieren können. Im Kathodenraum 2 befindet sich das Anionen-selektive Polymer 7 auf das direkt die Kathode 6 aufgebracht ist. Das Anionen- selektive Polymer zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass es mit quartären Aminen NR4 modifiziert wurde, so dass überwiegend negativ geladene Ionen diese Schicht passieren können.
In der Elektrolysezelle 1 liegt reines Wasser als Elektrolyt vor. An der Kathode 6 wird Kohlenstoffdioxid zerlegt und es bilden sich zusammen mit Wasser Hydroxidionen OH~ . Die
Hydroxidionen OH~ können das Anionen-selektive Polymer, welche typischerweise als Schicht 7 ausgebildet ist, durchdrin¬ gen. In Figur 1 ist das Konzentrationsprofil von
Hydroxidionen OH~ und Protonen H+ in der Zelle gezeigt. Das Wasser wird an der Anode 5 zu Protonen und Sauerstoff zer¬ legt. Der Sauerstoff kann die Elektrolysezelle 1 über den Anodenraum 3 verlassen. Die Protonen H+ können die Kationenselektive Membran 4 durchqueren. Dies zeigt auch das Konzent- rationsprofil der Protonen H+. An der Grenze der Anionen- selektiven Polymerschicht 7 und der Kationen-selektiven Membran 4 kommt es nun zu einem Kontakt der Wasserstoffprotonen H+ und den negativ geladenen Hydroxidionen OH~ . Neben den Hydroxidionen OH~ liegen in diesem Bereich auch Hydrogencar- bonat- oder Carbonationen vor (in den Konzentrationsprofilen nicht gezeigt) , welche aus nicht umgesetztem Kohlenstoffdio¬ xid und Hydroxidionen im Kathodenraum 2 entstanden sind. Diese können ebenfalls die Anionen-selektive Polymerschicht 7 durchqueren und mit den Wasserstoffprotonen H+ in Kontakt kommen. Das Hydrogencarbonat oder Carbonat reagiert nun mit den Wasserstoffprotonen H+ zu Wasser und Kohlenstoffdioxid . Das Kohlenstoffdioxid kann aufgrund der porösen Struktur der Anionen-selektiven Polymerschicht 7 zurück in den Kathodenraum 2 diffundieren, wo es erneut als Edukt verwendet werden kann. Dies erhöht die Ausbeute der Elektrolysezelle 1 vor¬ teilhaft .
Die Effizienz dieser Elektrolysezelle 1 ist deutlich höher als bei vergleichbaren Elektrolysezellen mit einem Spalt. In Elektrolysezellen mit einem Spalt, müssen die Kathode von der Kationen-selektive Membran getrennt werden, um unerwünschte WasserstoffProduktion zu vermeiden. Die Anionen-selektive Polymerschicht 7 ermöglicht nun vorteilhaft diesen Spalt weg- zulassen. Das erhöht vorteilhaft die Effizienz der Elektroly¬ sezelle, da die Leitfähigkeit der Elektrolysezelle deutlich erhöht wird. Dies ermöglicht ebenfalls den Einsatz von reinem Wasser. Der Einsatz von reinem Wasser vermindert vorteilhaft die Gefahr des Ausfallens von Salzen oder Carbonaten. Dieses Ausfallen verkürzt die Lebensdauer der Elektrolysezelle. So¬ mit wird durch den Einsatz des reinen Wassers die Lebensdauer der Elektrolysezelle verlängert.
In diesem Ausführungsbeispiel umfasst die Kathode 6 eine Gas¬ diffusionselektrode umfassend Silber. Dies ermöglicht das Herstellen von Kohlenstoffmonoxid . Dies ist insbesondere von Interesse wenn Synthesegas hergestellt werden soll. Der Ein¬ satz des reinen Wassers ermöglicht hohe Faraday-Effizienzen, so dass bei geringer Spannung Zielprodukte mit einer mög¬ lichst großen Reinheit hergestellt werden können.

Claims

Patentansprüche
1. Elektrolyseur zur elektrochemischen Nutzung von Kohlenstoffdioxid umfassend wenigstens eine Elektrolysezelle (1), - wobei die Elektrolysezelle (1) einen Anodenraum (3) mit ei¬ ner Anode (5) und einen Kathodenraum (2) mit einer Kathode (6) umfasst,
- zwischen dem Anodenraum (3) und dem Kathodenraum (2) eine erste Kationen-permeable Membran (4) angeordnet ist und die Anode (5) direkt an die erste Membran (4) grenzt, dadurch ge¬ kennzeichnet, dass zwischen der ersten Membran (4) und der Kathode (6) eine ein Anionen-selektives Polymer umfassende Schicht (7) angeordnet ist und wobei die Schicht (7) die Ka¬ thode (6) wenigstens teilweise aber nicht vollständig be- deckt.
2. Elektrolyseur nach Anspruch 1, wobei eine Oberfläche der ersten Membran (4) in einem Bereich von 20% bis 85% von der Schicht bedeckt wird.
3. Elektrolyseur nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei die Kathode (6) wenigstens eins der Elemente Silber, Kupfer, Blei, Indium, Zinn oder Zink umfasst.
4. Elektrolyseur nach einem der vorhergehenden Ansprüche, wobei die Kathode (6) eine Gasdiffusionselektrode umfasst.
5. Verfahren zum Betreiben eines Elektrolyseurs zur elektro¬ chemischen Nutzung von Kohlenstoffdioxid mit folgenden
Schritten:
- Bereitstellen eines Elektrolyseurs mit wenigstens einer Elektrolysezelle (1), wobei die Elektrolysezelle (1) einen Anodenraum (3) mit einer Anode (5) und einen Kathodenraum (2) mit einer Kathode (6) umfasst und zwischen dem Anodenraum (3) und dem Kathodenraum (2) eine erste Kationen-permeable Memb¬ ran (4) angeordnet ist und die Anode (5) direkt an die erste Membran (4) grenzt, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass zwischen der ersten Membran (4) und der Kathode (6) eine ein Anionen- selektives Polymer umfassende Schicht (7) angeordnet ist,
- Zerlegen von Kohlenstoffdioxid zu einem Produkt an der Ka¬ thode (6) im Kathodenraum (2),
- Bilden von Carbonat oder Hydrogencarbonat aus nicht umge¬ setztem Kohlenstoffdioxid und Hydroxidionen (OH~) an der Kathode ( 6) ,
- Transportieren von Wasserstoffionen (H+) von der Anode (5) durch die erste Membran (4),
- Reagieren der Wasserstoffionen (H+) und des Carbonats oder Hydrogencarbonats zu Kohlenstoffdioxid und Wasser in einem Kontaktbereich der Schicht (7) und der ersten Membran (4),
- Freisetzen des Kohlenstoffdioxids über Flusskanäle oder Po¬ ren in der Schicht (7) .
6. Verfahren nach Anspruch 5, wobei der Elektrolyseur mit reinem Wasser betrieben wird.
7. Verfahren nach einem der Ansprüche 5 oder 6, wobei wenigs- tens eins der Produkte Kohlenstoffmonoxid, Ethylen oder Amei¬ sensäure hergestellt wird.
8. Verfahren zum Herstellen eines Elektrolyseurs mit einer Anionen-selektiven Polymerschicht (7) an der Kathode (6), wobei die Kathode (6) mit dem Anionen-selektiven Polymer imprägniert wird.
