Definitions

  • a threat to vehicles and other mobile or stationary objects is not only from below or from the side, but also from above.
  • bomblets are shot with shaped charges, in particular by the artillery or dropped by aircraft.
  • Such ammunitions are able to penetrate armored steel of several centimeters thick.
  • the invention has the object to provide a protection system that can remedy the aforementioned disadvantages.
  • the invention is based on the idea to arrange an additional protective layer above the vehicle or object roof, which increases the stand-off for a particular shaped charge projectile, so that the vehicle roof is not penetrate.
  • This will be a variable structure that can deploy during an attack.
  • the structure is refoldable, especially when it is no longer needed. If the structure has been destroyed during use, another can be used. A repair is also possible.
  • the structure (ISADO - Inflatable Shield against Dropped Ordnance) ensures that the hollow charge above the vehicle / object is triggered.
  • the distance may vary depending on the threat and the vehicle and is preferably 1 m.
  • a net has the advantage over a tarp or the like that it is not moved so much by air movements by blast pressure of the bomblet.
  • the structure consists of a net-like fabric, which can preferably be brought into position via inflatable tubes. The unfolding is preferably carried out by air. To fold this is removed from the structure again. The structure is subsequently mountable to all vehicles, light and inexpensive. It can be set up in seconds. So it is not disturbing for the mobility of the vehicle itself.
  • the inflating of the structure takes place primarily after detection of an approaching ammunition.
  • An alternative to the inflatable tubes is of course the incorporation of elastic plastic rods, which unfold on release independently and bring the structure in position.
  • the structure is connected via a connection, preferably at the highest elevation of the vehicle / object.
  • the connection ensures a transport collar.
  • tube structures and / or elastic rods are integrated, via which an unfolding of the structure is achieved.
  • the structure is held by a circulating tube, which in turn is kept stable by an internal overpressure.
  • FIG. 1 shows a connection of a protection system to a vehicle roof
  • Fig. 2 shows a variant of the unfolded protection system.
  • connection 2 for a protection system 3 (FIG. 2).
  • the connection 2 should be provided at the highest elevation of the vehicle 1. In the case shown, this is preferably the vehicle roof 4.
  • the connection 2 is realized here by a simple collar. Alternatives are known in the art, so they are also taken into account.
  • Fig. 2 reflects a triggered protection system 3.
  • the structure 5 shown here - ISADO - consists of a high-strength net-like fabric mat 6 and is designed so that a distance of preferably 1 m is maintained to the roof.
  • the division of the structure 5 reduces the construction time.
  • a pitch prevents collision with roof structures during deployment.
  • a division into a left and right half 7, 8 seems sufficient, but can be further broken down. Thus, for example, a quartering be provided. The more chambers are created by the division, the more a folding of the structure 5 is prevented.
  • the threat of ammunition - here a bomblet - is sensed.
  • a space above the vehicle 1 is preferably monitored, similar to a hemisphere.
  • Sensing can not be done with the help of one Doppler radar shown in detail, which is attached to the object 1 to be protected. (If there are several vehicles or objects 1 in this area, it is often sufficient if at least one of the objects 1 fulfills the monitoring criteria.) Filtering according to size and speed can also be used to detect bomblets from other types of ammunition.
  • the unfolding of the structure 5 is supported in the first variant by a entrained compressor or a gas generator.
  • elastic plastic rods which unfold on release independently and bring the structure 5 in position (not shown in detail).
  • the network structure of the fabric mat 6 of the structure 5 reduces the sensitivity to the blast effect of the bomblets triggering the protection system 3.
  • the structure 5 or the fabric mat 6 is held by a circumferential tube 9, which is held stable by an internal overpressure.
  • the connection to the vehicle roof 4 is made in the deployed state by a pressurized hose construction 10 (or the elastic rods).
  • the hose components 8 are also made of high strength material, for example Dyneema, to reduce sensitivity to splinters.
  • the structure 5 can be stowed in the transport collar 2 again after each use. This can be done manually and / or by removing the gas mixture from the tube structures 10. Depending on the damage caused by the bomblet threat, the structure 5 can be used several times.
  • the volume for inflation can be provided, for example, by two compressed air cylinders (preferably 10 ltrs). These can be accommodated in the transport collar 2 with. Thus, only one power supply (24 V) for sensing a bomblet threat and the electrical triggering of the filling process of the structure 5 are required in these cases as an interface to the vehicle / object 1.
  • Constant refilling of the air via a blower has the advantage that a collapse is prevented even with holes in the structure.
