Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a vehicular discharge lamp. More specifically, the present invention relates to a technical field wherein a gap is formed between a pair of terminal cover portions that respectively covers a pair of power supply terminal portions, and a partition is arranged in the gap to secure insulation between the pair of power supply terminal portions.
  • vehicular headlamps There are various types of vehicular headlamps. For example, there is a type that uses an incandescent lamp (incandescent bulb) or a halogen lamp (halogen bulb) as a light source, a type that uses a discharge lamp (discharge bulb) as a light source, and a type that uses a light emitting diode (LED) as a light source.
  • incandescent lamp incandescent bulb
  • halogen lamp halogen bulb
  • LED light emitting diode
  • a discharge lamp has more light output than an incandescent lamp, a halogen lamp, and a light emitting diode. Therefore, a vehicular headlamp that uses a discharge lamp as a light source is advantageous for its ability to achieve a higher intensity.
  • the discharge lamp has a double tube structure in which an arc tube, which holds a pair of electrodes and has a metal halide and a gas such as a noble gas sealed inside, is arranged inside an outer tube.
  • the arc tube has a light emitting portion in which discharge occurs.
  • the pair of electrodes has end portions that project to inside the arc tube, and other end portions that are respectively connected to a pair of lead wires through a molybdenum foil.
  • the lead wires each lead out from the outer tube to outside, and end portions of the lead wires on sides opposite the sides connected to the electrodes are each provided as power supply terminal portions to which a starting voltage is applied when starting lighting of the lamp.
  • a predetermined starting voltage is applied to the pair of electrodes held in the arc tube, and lighting of the lamp is started by discharge occurring in the light emitting portion of the arc tube.
  • the discharge lamp described above has a starting device, also called a starter, for applying the starting voltage to an end side in the lengthwise direction of the outer tube (see Patent Document 1, for example).
  • Patent Document 1 attempts to provide insulation between the pair of power supply terminal portions by using a resin material to cover the power supply terminal portions.
  • the resin material fills between the pair of power supply terminal portions.
  • the thickness of the resin material between the pair of power supply terminal portions is thick, and parts to be formed by the resin material are prone to voids (air holes) during molding. The occurrence of a void may generate a spark and lead to an insulation breakdown.
  • the creeping distance between the pair of power supply terminal portions is short, and an insufficient creeping distance may make it difficult to secure an adequate insulated condition.
  • a vehicular discharge lamp includes: a lamp body that has an outer tube, an arc tube arranged inside the outer tube, and a pair of electrodes arranged inside the arc tube; a first lead wire and a second lead wire that are respectively connected to the pair of electrodes, and of which end portions on sides that are opposite sides connected to the pair of electrodes are respectively provided as power supply terminal portions; a plug that is formed from a resin material, and has a first terminal cover portion and a second terminal cover portion that respectively cover the power supply terminal portions of the pair of lead wires in a state of close contact therewith from an outer circumferential side; a case body, to which the plug is joined, inside which the first terminal cover portion and the second terminal cover portion are arranged; and a starting device that is arranged inside the case body, and applies a starting voltage to the power supply terminal portion when starting the lamp body.
  • a gap is formed between the first terminal cover portion and the second terminal cover portion in a direction orthogonal to an optical axis of light radiated from the lamp body.
  • a partition is provided on the case body and arranged in the gap, and separates the first terminal cover portion and the second terminal cover portion.
  • the existence of the gap reduces a thickness of the resin material between the pair of power supply terminal portions.
  • a vehicular discharge lamp is characterized by including: a lamp body that has an outer tube, an arc tube arranged inside the outer tube, and a pair of electrodes arranged inside the arc tube; a first lead wire and a second lead wire that are respectively connected to the pair of electrodes, and of which end portions on sides that are opposite sides connected to the pair of electrodes are respectively provided as power supply terminal portions; a plug that is formed from a resin material, and has a first terminal cover portion and a second terminal cover portion that respectively cover the power supply terminal portions of the pair of lead wires in a state of close contact therewith from an outer circumferential side; a case body, to which the plug is joined, inside which the first terminal cover portion and the second terminal cover portion are arranged; and a starting device that is arranged inside the case body, and applies a starting voltage to the power supply terminal portion when starting the lamp body.
  • the support wall portion is provided on a cover portion of the case body and the retainer wall portion is provided on a case portion of the case body. Further, a support wall portion and a retainer wall portion, each generally shaped as a cylinder extending in the optical axis direction, are provided on the case body.
  • the first terminal cover portion is inserted into the support wall portion, and the second terminal cover portion is inserted into the retainer wall portion. Consequently, the support wall portion and the retainer wall portion enable an improved insulation property between the power supply terminal portions, and the plug can be easily and reliably joined to the case body.
  • the gap is formed between the first terminal cover portion and the second terminal cover portion, voids (air holes) are not prone to occur during molding of the plug, and an insulation breakdown of the discharge lamp caused by the occurrence of a void can be prevented.
  • forming the gap enables an increase in the creeping distance between the power supply terminal portion of the first lead wire and the power supply terminal portion of the second lead wire. By increasing the creeping distance, an adequate insulated condition can be secured between the power supply terminal portions.
  • the partition is arranged in the gap. Therefore, the surrounding thickness of the resin material (insulating material) around the power supply terminal portion increases, making it possible to achieve sufficient insulation between the power supply terminal portions.
  • the power supply terminal portion of the first lead wire and the power supply terminal portion of the second lead wire are positioned separated in the optical axis direction.
  • an outer arranging portion is provided on the plug and arranged on an outer side of the case body, and closes an end portion on the plug side of the lamp body from the outer circumferential side.
