- A machine for picking up ballast of a track, comprising a machine frame (5) mobile on on-track undercarriages (4) and an excavation device (7) having a rotatable endless conveying chain (9), the excavation device (7) being composed of two longitudinal channels (10) joined to one another in the region of a chain drive (8) and a transverse chain member (11) connected to a respective lower end (12) of the two longitudinal channels (10), wherein each longitudinal channel (10) has a channel inner side (14) and a channel outer side (15) - with regard to a transverse direction of the machine, characterized by the following features:a) each longitudinal channel (10) has, at its lower end (12) on the channel outer side (15), a channel aperture (16) detachably connected to a first or second channel cover (17, 18), as desired,b) the first channel cover (17), when fixed to the longitudinal channel (10) for covering the channel aperture (16), results in a channel cross-section (20) suitable for the passage of the conveying chain (9),c) the second channel cover (18), when fixed to the longitudinal channel (10) for covering the channel aperture (16), results in a reduced channel cross-section (23) which enables only the passage of a reduced auxiliary chain (22).
