Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a muffler provided with a tail pipe for an exhaust system in a motor vehicle.
  • the present invention is advantageously applied to a motor vehicle, to which the following description will explicitly refer without however loosing generality.
  • a motor vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine is provided with an exhaust system, which serves to release the gases produced by the combustion in the atmosphere limiting both noise and the contents of polluting substances.
  • a modern exhaust system comprises a series of elements arranged in a series and ends with a rear muffler provided with a terminal designated as "tail pipe", through which the exhaust gases are released in the atmosphere.
  • motor vehicles Before being marketed, all motor vehicles are subjected to front, side and rear crash tests in order to check the ability of the motor vehicle to protect the occupants. Recently, some low speed crash tests, to which a motor vehicle is subjected, are also used to estimate the resistance (i.e. the ability to limit damage) and the repair costs of the motor vehicle itself; it must be noted that motor vehicles, which are resistant and characterised by low repair costs, may result advantageous both in terms of preference by the final purchasers and in terms of reduction of the insurance premium.
  • the tail pipe of the rear muffler may come into contact with the obstacle.
  • the rear muffler is virtually always irreparably damaged and it must therefore be replaced; furthermore, in especially unfortunate cases, the mechanical stress may also be transmitted to other exhaust devices (as, for example, the intermediate muffler) of the exhaust system with subsequent damages to the other exhaust devices as well.
  • a muffler provided with a tail pipe for an exhaust system in a motor vehicle according to that claimed in the accompanying claims.
  • numeral 1 indicates, as a whole, a muffler 1 for an exhaust system in a motor vehicle (not shown) provided with an internal combustion engine.
  • the muffler 1 comprises a tubular body 2, which displays at least one inlet opening (not shown), through which the exhaust gases produced by the internal combustion engine enter within the tubular body 2, and an outlet opening, through which the exhaust gases exit from the tubular body 2.
  • the muffler 1 At the outlet opening, the muffler 1 comprises a tubular tail pipe 3, which is supported by the tubular body 2, forms an extension of the outlet opening and serves to release the exhaust gases in the atmosphere.
  • the tail pipe 3 displays a weakened and collapsible section 4, which is adapted to collapse in a controlled manner in case of crash. Accordingly, in case of rear crash of the motor vehicle against a foreign body that also comes into contact with the tail pipe 3, the weakened and collapsible section 4 of the tail pipe 3 itself collapses and therefore does not transmit an excessive mechanical stress to the tubular body 2 and to other components of the exhaust system, which are mechanically connected to the muffler 1.
  • the tail pipe 3 comprises a fixed portion 5 integral with the tubular body 2, and a mobile portion 6, which forms the weakened section 4 and is partially fitted around the fixed portion 5 so as to be able to slide with respect to the fixed portion 5 itself in case of crash.
  • the overlapping area between the fixed portion 5 and the mobile portion 6 displays an axial size comprised in the range from 3 to 10 mm.
  • the fixed portion 5 displays a flared free end (clearly visible in figure 2) displaying an increased diameter, at which the second mobile portion 6 is fitted.
  • the mobile portion 6 is interference-fitted around the flared free end of the fixed portion 5.
  • the fixed portion 5 and the mobile portion 6 are rectilinear (such a configuration is used when the muffler 1 is longitudinally mounted in the motor vehicle).
  • the fixed portion 5 is preferably longer than the mobile portion 6; in this case, even in the position pulled back as much as possible the mobile portion 6 may never come into direct contact with the tubular body 2.
  • the mobile portion 6 slides axially towards the tubular body 2 and with respect to the fixed portion 5. After a rear crash, which is not excessively violent, in order to recover the muffler 1 it is sufficient to return the mobile portion 6 to its original position and possibly replace only the mobile portion 6 itself.
  • the mobile portion 6 displays a 90° curve (such a configuration is used when the muffler 1 is mounted transversely in the motor vehicle).
  • a 90° curve such a configuration is used when the muffler 1 is mounted transversely in the motor vehicle.
  • the mobile portion 6 rotates with respect to the fixed portion 5 coming off from the fixed portion 5 itself. After a rear crash, which is not excessively violent, in order to recover the muffler 1 it is sufficient to return the mobile portion 6 to its original position and possibly replace only the mobile portion 6 itself.
  • the ends 7 and 8 of the two portions 5 and 6 display the same inclination with respect to a longitudinal axis 9 comprised in the range from 15° to 75°; preferably, at the overlapping area the ends 7 and 8 of the two portions 5 and 6 display the same inclination with respect to a longitudinal axis 9 comprised in the range from 30° a 60°, specifically approximately 45°.
  • the mobile portion 6 is welded to the fixed portion 5 in a distinct number of welding points 10 comprised in the range from 2 to 8 (normally 3 distinct welding points, which are symmetrically arranged about the longitudinal axis 9); the width of each welding point 10 is limited so as to be breakable under stress.
  • the function of the welding points 10 is to increase the mechanical resistance of the connection between the fixed portion 5 and the mobile portion 6 to avoid running the risk of an accidental detachment of the mobile portion 6; at the same time, the welding points 10 are not an excessively strong mechanical constraint and therefore break in case of rear crash without transmitting excessive mechanical stresses to the tubular body 2.
  • the tail pipe 3 comprises a bellows-configured intermediate portion 11, which forms the weakened section 4 and, in case of crash, is deformed becoming shorter.
  • the bellows-configured intermediate portion 11 forms the weakened section 4 and, in case of crash, is deformed becoming shorter.
  • figures 4 and 5 there is shown a first possible embodiment of the bellows-configured intermediate portion 11, whereas in figures 6 and 7 there is shown a second possible embodiment of the bellows-configured intermediate portion 11.
  • the tail pipe 3 may comprise both a weakened section 4 of the type described in figures 1-3 and a weakened section 4 of the type described in figures 4-7; in this case, the fixed portion 5 of the tail pipe 3 displays the bellows-configured intermediate portion 11.
  • the above-described muffler 1 displays many advantages, because it is easy and cost-effective to implement and at the same time allows to considerably limit the damages to the exhaust system in case of a rear crash, which is not excessively violent. It must be highlighted that a possible replacement of the mobile portion 6 of the tail pipe 3 leads to extremely contained costs, because the mobile portion 6 is a metal tube having a very low production cost.
