Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for acting on a pressure sensor mounted on a glow plug. It is known to integrate a pressure sensor with a glow plug in an internal combustion engine, in particular a diesel engine. This sensor measures the internal pressure of the engine. Knowing this pressure allows better control of the combustion process in this engine. We then get a better performance from this engine and limit on the one hand its fuel consumption and on the other hand its polluting emissions.
- a glow plug generally comprises a tubular body having on its outer surface a threaded part allowing its fixing in a corresponding bore made in a cylinder head. Part of this body is inside the combustion chamber and the other part outside of it. The part inside the combustion chamber has a finger inside which there is a heating electrode.
- the pressure sensor is mounted between on the one hand an external thread nut and screwed into a housing of the spark plug head and other apart a spacer bearing on the finger inside which is the heating electrode and mounted on the tubular body.
- the spacer is made of ceramic and has a circular cylindrical tubular shape.
- This spacer does not come directly to bear against the sensor but is separated from the latter on the one hand by an electrically insulating element and on the other hand by a support piece used in order distribute the pressure from the spacer over the entire surface of the pressure sensor.
- This solution has the disadvantage that at least three pieces are placed between the spark plug finger and the pressure sensor. This implies a cost on the one hand for the production of these different parts and on the other hand during the assembly of these.
- the presence of several contact surfaces between the pressure sensor and the insulating element, between the insulating element and the support piece and between the support piece and the spacer had a negative effect on the sensitivity of the pressure sensor.
- the present invention therefore aims to provide a glow plug equipped with a pressure sensor implementing a spacer to transmit forces to the sensor but whose cost is reduced compared to the embodiment presented above.
- the structure of this glow plug will not weaken the sensitivity of the pressure sensor used.
- it provides a force transmission device for a pressure sensor associated with a glow plug in an internal combustion engine, in the form of a tubular part of substantially circular section.
- this device comprises an area in which its outer diameter increases as it approaches one of its ends, and the front face of the device corresponding to this flared end is a bearing face intended to receive a sensor pressure.
- Such a force transmission device is thus also adapted to serve as a support piece.
- this force transmission device is made of a ceramic material.
- it can also serve as an electrically insulating element for the pressure sensor when the latter is a piezoelectric sensor. It can indeed also be a resistive piezoelectric sensor or any other type of pressure sensor.
- this device preferably has a central hole of substantially constant diameter.
- the present invention also relates to a glow plug comprising a piezoelectric pressure sensor and characterized in that it comprises a force transmission device as described above.
- the flared end of the force transmission device is for example in abutment against one face of the pressure sensor and corresponds substantially to the surface of this sensor.
- the glow plug may in particular be of the type comprising at one of its ends a finger integrating a heating electrode, and the force transmission device is then for example placed between this finger and the pressure sensor.
- the finger can be fixed inside a tubular part, at one end of the latter, and this tubular part can have an internal shoulder against which the force transmission device comes to rest.
- the tubular part in question here may be the body of the glow plug but it may also be another part, such as for example an intermediate part between the body and the finger of said glow plug.
- the outside diameter of the force transmission device is preferably less than the inside diameter of the tubular piece inside which it is housed so that the transmission device force is free on its periphery, in particular relative to the tubular part.
- a conductive core supplies electrical energy to the spark plug heating electrode, this core preferably passes freely inside the force transmission device.
- the present invention finally relates to an internal combustion engine, in particular a diesel type engine, characterized in that it comprises at least one glow plug as described above. Details and advantages of the present invention will emerge more clearly from the description which follows, given with reference to the appended schematic drawing, in which: FIG.
- FIG. 1 shows in longitudinal section a glow plug prior to the present invention
- FIG. 2 shows in view outside a glow plug according to the invention
- Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the spark plug of Figure 2
- Figure 4 is an exploded view of the various components of the spark plug of Figures 2 and 3
- Figure 5 illustrates the mounting of a spacer according to the invention in a perspective view in section
- FIG. 6 shows a spacer according to the invention on which a piezoelectric sensor rests
- FIG. 7 is a view on an enlarged scale of the mounting of the piezoelectric sensor of the previous figure seen from a different angle.
- Figure 1 shows in longitudinal section a glow plug of a model prior to the invention (but not disclosed at the time of the first filing of this patent application).
- This spark plug has a pressure sensor so that it can measure the pressure in an engine cylinder.
- This glow plug 2 is conventionally mounted in an engine 4, of the diesel type, and more precisely in a cylinder head 6 of this engine. It comprises a body 8, a finger 10, a core 12 and a pressure sensor 14.
- the body 8 is adapted to be fixed to the motor 4 by screwing.
- the cylinder head 6 has a threaded bore passing through it and opening into a combustion chamber of said engine.
- the body 8 has meanwhile on its outer surface a thread 16 corresponding to the thread produced in the cylinder head 6.
- the spark plug When the thread 16 cooperates with the threaded bore of the cylinder head 6, the spark plug being in its position mounted in the engine 4, a part of the body 8 extends towards the inside of the engine, that is to say towards the combustion chamber, while another part extends towards the outside of the engine.
- the body 8 is a tubular body and is for example made of steel.
- the finger 10 is mounted inside the tubular body 8, in which it is tightened, and projects inside the combustion chamber.
- This finger 10 incorporates a heating electrode (not shown).
- the core 12 is intended to supply electrical energy to this electrode and passes through the body 8 from the finger 10 to the end of the body 8 opposite to that from which the finger 10 projects. This core 12 is then connected, by means not shown, to a supply conductor.
- the pressure sensor 14 is provided for measuring the pressure inside the corresponding combustion chamber.
- this pressure sensor 14 comprises a piezoelectric element 18 disposed between two contact elements 20 made of an electrically conductive material. The sensor is then itself electrically isolated from the rest of the glow plug 2 by electrically insulating elements 22. In this embodiment, the pressure sensor 14 also comes to bear via a support piece 24 on the body 8.
- the pressure sensor 14 is secured to the body 8 by its upper surface and bears against the finger 10 so that the pressure exerted on this finger compresses it against the body 8.
- the sensor pressure 14 is supported on a spacer 38 which rests on the finger 10 and which is disposed in the body 8, without contact with the latter.
- This spacer 38 surrounds the core and is not in contact with it either.
- the compression of the pressure sensor 14 against the finger 10 (via the spacer 38 and the support piece 24) as well as its attachment to the body 8 is ensured by a nut with external thread 36.
- This nut n '' is obviously not in contact with the core 12 but cooperates with a thread formed on the inner face of the side wall 46 of a housing 34 formed in the body 8 to receive the sensor 14.
- the similar elements have the same references as those used in FIG. 1.
- the finger bears the reference 10 '. It is a finger of a different type from that shown in the figure
- the spark plug head has an overmold 44 made of synthetic material.
- a tubular intermediate piece 30 is provided between the body 8 and the finger 10 'to isolate the finger 10' from the body 8.
- a spacer 38' Between the finger 10 'and the pressure sensor 14 is a spacer 38'.
- the spacer 38 ' is a tubular piece which leaves in its center the passage to the core 12. As in the embodiment of Figure 1, the spacer 38' is freely mounted around this core.
- the spacer 38 ' is freely mounted in the tubular intermediate piece 30 and its outside diameter is therefore less than the inside diameter of this tubular intermediate piece 30.
- the diameter of the spacer 38 ' is adapted to the diameter of the face. bottom of the pressure sensor 14.
- the spacer 38 ' has in its upper part a frustoconical zone 40 allowing the outside diameter of the spacer 38' to pass progressively from a diameter corresponding approximately to the diameter of the finger 10 'to the diameter pressure sensor 14 approaching the end of the spacer 38 'against which the pressure sensor 14 is supported.
- the spacer 38 'thus ensures the function that exerts in the embodiment of Figure 1, the support piece 24.
- this spacer 38' can also fulfill the function of the electrically insulating element 22 of FIG. 1, this spacer 38 'is made of an electrically insulating material, such as for example a ceramic.
- the tubular intermediate piece 30 is adjusted with clamping at the lower end of the body 8, at the level of an attachment zone 32. Between this attachment zone 32 and the zone in which the finger 10 'is tightly adjusted in the tubular intermediate piece 30, there is a deformation zone 42. The latter promotes the transmission of the forces exerted by the pressure prevailing in the combustion chamber on the finger 10' to the pressure sensor 14
- Figure 5 shows a third embodiment of a glow plug according to the invention. We find in this candle a spacer 38 'according to the invention.
- FIG. 5 can be considered as a combination of the embodiments of FIG. 1 and of FIGS. 2 to 4.
- This sensor comprises a piezoelectric element 18 sandwiched between two contact elements 20.
- This sensor is located between a nut with an external thread 36 and a spacer 38 '.
- a core 12 is connected to the finger 10 and passes through the spacer 38 ', the pressure sensor 14 and the nut with external thread 36.
- the spacer 38' is of the same type as that described with reference to FIGS. 2 to 4.
- this spacer thus comprises a circular tubular cylindrical part and ends in a frustoconical part 40 located on the side of the pressure sensor 14. It can be seen in FIG. 5 how this spacer is mounted in the body 8.
- the spacer 38 ' On the side of the pressure sensor 14, the spacer 38 'has a bearing surface which corresponds substantially to the surface of the pressure sensor 14. This bearing surface is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the spacer 38' and has the form of a ring. The central recess of this ring corresponds to the passage of the core 12. At its other end, the spacer 38 'comes to rest against a shoulder 50. The latter is produced near the end of the finger 10 located at the 'interior of the body 8.
- the end of the spacer 38' opposite the frustoconical area 40 is located near the finger 10 but does not rest thereon.
- the spacer 38 ' still transmits the forces exerted by the pressure prevailing in the combustion chamber corresponding to the pressure sensor.
- the body 8 has a deformation zone 42 ′ lying between the zone in which the finger 10 is tightly adjusted inside the body 8 and the thread 16. It is considered that the thread is non-deformable because it is mounted in the cylinder head 6 which is very rigid.
- the shoulder 50 against which the spacer 38 'rests, being located on the one hand of the finger 10 and on the other hand of the zone in which this finger 10 is tightly adjusted in the body 8, allows the sensor to pressure 14 to see all the same the stresses exerted on the finger 10.
- the pressure sensor 14 is located between the nut with internal thread 36 and the spacer 38 '.
- the nut with external thread 36 is integral with the wall 46 which is fixed relative to the cylinder head. In fact, this wall is located outside the cylinder head and is not subject to any significant constraint. If we then considers that the ceramic of the spacer 38 'is rigid and does not deform, the forces exerted on the finger 10 are transmitted to the pressure sensor 14 by the spacer 38'.
- the spacer 38 ' widens so that its outside diameter comes to adapt to the diameter of the pressure sensor.
- the spacer 38 'can come to bear on the entire surface of the pressure sensor 14. This flared shape is preferably produced near the pressure sensor 14.
- this shape is adapted to the internal shape of the body, or more generally of the tubular part, in which the spacer 38 'is located.
- the flared area of the spacer 38 ′ was frustoconical.
- FIGS. 6 and 7 show other embodiments.
- the flared shape is a succession of frustoconical sections 52 whose angle of opening at top is increasing when approaching the pressure sensor 14.
- the spacer 38 ' ends on the side of the pressure sensor 14 by a circular cylindrical zone 54 (with a central hole for the passage of the core 12) of low thickness.
- the spacer according to the invention could be made of a material other than a ceramic. We can even consider an electrically conductive material.
- any means can be envisaged.
- the widening of the outside diameter of the spacer is preferably carried out in the immediate vicinity of the pressure sensor. However, this widening can be carried out at another location on the spacer.
- the spacer according to the invention is described with respect to two distinct types of glow plug. Of course, this spacer can be used on other types of glow plug comprising a sensor, for example a piezoelectric sensor, and a spacer for the transmission of forces to this sensor.
