Definitions
- the invention relates to a wood preservative for protection against mold.
- the invention further relates to a method for producing wood-based products with such a wood preservative.
- Wood materials without a fungicide finish are covered with mold on their surface if there is continued moisture in the form of water vapor or running water. It was found that this growth requires a water activity value a w of at least 0.80 to 0.85. This a w value can be reached quickly on the surfaces of wood materials that have been stored on construction sites for a long time. Since the storage period from packaging to processing is often eight weeks or more, it is an object of this invention to protect the wood-based materials, in particular the panel material, from mold attack in this critical phase.
- this object is achieved by a wood preservative containing salicylic acid.
- a method for producing wood-based products, in particular chipboard, fiberboard or OSB, with a wood preservative according to the invention is characterized in that the wood-based materials to be pressed are added with 0.5-10% salicylic acid, calculated on atro-chip or fiber material, as a solid becomes.
- the admixture of salicylic acid can take place before or after the chips or fibers are glued, for example with the aid of atomizers or the like, and is suitable for both organic and inorganically bonded wood-based materials.
- the object mentioned at the outset is achieved by a wood preservative which, in addition to the salicylic acid, also contains polyethylene glycol (PEG).
- PEG polyethylene glycol
- the salicylic acid can be dissolved in the PEG and / or in low-boiling organic solvents, in particular ethanol.
- the salicylic acid dissolved in ethanol would penetrate deeply into the treated wood-based material, so that only small amounts of salicylic acid remain on the wood-based material surface, which would form needle-shaped crystals under the influence of atmospheric moisture, which - since they have no liability whatsoever the wood material - mechanically removed and thus ineffective.
- the inventive connection with PEG ensures good fixation of the salicylic acid on the surface of the material and limits the depth of penetration of the salicylic acid into the wood material to a maximum of 2 mm. For this reason, even small total amounts of the mixture according to the invention have the greatest possible action against mold.
- a wood preservative is characterized by 0.5 to 10% by mass of salicylic acid, based on the PEG, and in a suitable mixture by up to 30% by mass of ethanol, based on the PEG.
- ethanol can also serve as a solvent for salicylic acid.
- the amount of ethanol should be so low due to procedural reasons due to the risk of fire as possible but as high as necessary. If the salicylic acid is dissolved in PEG, an exclusive addition of water would also be conceivable in order to maintain the flowability.
- MDF boards for example, are not dimensionally stable in the presence of larger quantities of water.
- Ethanol can also serve as an entrainer for the water after processing the PEG + salicylic acid in order to dry the plate surface as quickly as possible or to allow the PEG + salicylic acid to solidify.
- the water content of a wood preservative according to the invention is preferably ⁇ 30% by mass, based on the PEG, which preferably has a degree of polymerization of 2000.
- a dye for example Sudan blue, can be added to the ethanol.
- a suitable mixture for a wood preservative according to the invention contains 70 to 80% by mass of PEG, 10 to 20% of an approximately 30% ethanolic solution of salicylic acid and approximately 10% by mass of water.
- PEG 2000 is melted at about 60 ° C and kept at this temperature;
- Salicylic acid is dissolved in ethanol to produce a 30% ethanolic solution of salicylic acid;
- the mixture is provided with about 10 g of water.
- a penetration depth of approximately 1 mm is achieved when the plate temperature is around 60 ° C. If the mixture according to this example contains 3% salicylic acid, 6 g of pure salicylic acid in and on the plate are to be expected as an effective amount.
- the selected mixture can be applied, for example, by rolling, filling, pouring or spraying onto the plate surfaces which have cooled significantly below 75 ° C (decomposition temperature of the salicylic acid) after production.
- Wood preservatives treated have been successful. After treatment of the plate surfaces, it was also possible after 8 to 10 weeks at 23 ° C and 95 to 98% rel. Humidity no mold infestation can be found. In contrast, untreated control samples were infected with mold after only one week of storage.

Abstract
Description
PEG 2000 wird bei etwa 60°C geschmolzen und auf dieser Temperatur gehalten;
Salicylsaure wird in Ethanol gelöst zur Herstellung einer 30 %igen ethanolischen Lösung von Salicylsaure;
etwa 10 g dieser ethanolischen Salicylsäurelösung wird in etwa 80 g geschmolzenen PEG eingerührt;
