Abstract

Beschrieben werden neue transparente organische Elektrolumineszenzanordnungen, umfassend zwei auf einem Substrat aufgebrachte transparente elektrische Kontakte und eine zwischen den Kontakten und einer Versiegelung befindliche fluoreszente Polymerlösung.

Description

BESCHREIBUNG
Transparente organische Elektrolumineszenzanordnungen
Die Erfindung betrifft neue transparente organische Elektrolumineszenzanordnungen zur Verwendung in der Anzeige- und Displaytechnik.
Organische Elektrolumineszenzanzeigen sind bereits im Stand der Technik bekannt. Sie weisen eine Polymerschicht oder eine aus niedermolekularen Bausteinen aufgebaute Schicht auf, welche sich zwischen zwei elektrischen Kontakten bzw. Elektroden befindet. Solche Elektrolumineszenzanzeigen sind beispielsweise in Burroughes, J.H., Bradley, D.D.C., Brown, A.R., Marks, R.N., Mackay, K. , Friend, R.H., Burns, P.L. und Holmes, A.B., Nature 347 (1990) 539 und Tang, C.W. und van Slyke, S.A., Appl . Phys . ett . 51 (1987) 12, 913 beschrieben.
Einer der elektrischen Kontakte wird dabei transparent gewählt (ITO) , für den anderen wird ein Metall mit geringer Austrittsarbeit für Elektronen eingesetzt (Aluminium, Cal- cium oder Magnesium/Silber) . Die niedermolekularen Bausteine werden häufig aufgedampft, die Polymere aus der Lösung verarbeitet, z.B. geschleudert (spin-coating) oder durch Tauchen (film-casting) bzw. mittels Rakeltechnik aufgebracht. Die Aufgabe besteht bei diesen Prozessen darin, den Polymerfilm sehr dünn (ca. 100 nm) , möglichst homogen und uniform aufzutragen.
Die Abstrahlung der Anzeige beruht auf der Reflexion des Lichtes an der Metallelektrode. Das Licht wird dann durch die transparente ITO-Elektrode emittiert. In Abhängigkeit vom po- lymeren Schichtaufbau der Anzeige ist es notwendig, die oft eingesetzte Aluminiumelektrode durch eine andere Elektrode oder eine Kombination von Aluminium mit einem anderen Elektrodenmaterial zu ersetzen. Bedingt durch diese Konstruktion ist die Gesamtanordnung durch die reflektierende Metallelektrode nicht transparent .
Für die Realisierung einer transparenten Anzeige muß die ansonsten reflektierende Metallelektrode ebenfalls transparent ausgelegt werden. Zunächst kann man an den Einsatz transparenter Aluminiumelektroden (ca. 10 bis 30 nm) denken, um auch den elektroneninjizierenden Kontakt transparent zu gestalten. Das Problem liegt aber in der geringen Leitfähigkeit einer solchen dünnen Aluminiumelektrode, die ein stabiles Arbeiten der Anzeige unmöglich macht, weil eine Kontaktierung sehr schwierig ist. Deshalb wurde von Gu et al . in Appl . Phys . Lett. 68 (1996) 19, 2606 vorgeschlagen, zuerst eine Elektrode aus einer Legierung aus Magnesium und Silber aufzudampfen, die dann mit einer transparenten, aber sehr leitfähigen ITO- Elektrode überzogen wird.
Diese Anordnung besitzt jedoch den Nachteil, daß die Abscheidung von Elektrodenmaterialien auf organischen Schichten durch die Temperaturbelastbarkeit der Materialien stark eingeschränkt ist . Der Erfindung liegt daher die Aufgabe zugrunde, eine Elektro- lumineszenzanordnung bereitzustellen, die die vorgenannten Nachteile nicht aufweist.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist eine Elektrolumineszenzanord- nung, welche zwei auf einem Substrat aufgebrachte transparente elektrische Kontakte und eine zwischen den Kontakten und einer Versiegelung befindliche fluoreszente Polymerlösung umfaßt .
Der schematische Aufbau der erfindungsgemäßen Elektrolumines- zenzanordnung ist in Figur 1 dargestellt. Hierin bezeichnet (3) ein transparentes Substrat, vorzugsweise ein Glassubstrat, auf das transparente elektrische Kontakte (2) bzw. transparente Elektroden (ITO) aufgebracht sind, (1) die fluoreszente Polymerlösung und (4) eine Versiegelung, die das Austrocknen der Lösung und die Diffusion von Sauerstoff und Wasserdampf in die Elektrolumineszenzanordnung verhindert.
Die erfindungsgemäße Elektrolumineszenzanordnung weist gegenüber bekannten Anordnungen den Vorteil auf, daß die Elektroden der Anzeige aus der gleichen MaterialZusammensetzung bestehen können. Bedingt durch die symmetrische Injektion der Ladungsträger kann die erfindungsgemäße Elektrolumineszenzanordnung sowohl mit einer Gleichspannung unterschiedlicher Polarität als auch mit WechselSpannung betrieben werden. Schließlich ist die erfindungsgemäße transparente organische Elektrolumineszenzanordnung gekennzeichnet durch eine hohe Zuverlässigkeit und Reproduzierbarkeit, einen wesentlich geringeren technischen Aufwand und geringere Kosten in Herstellung und Betrieb, so daß neue Anwendungsfelder erschlos- sen werden können.
Die erfindungsgemäße Elektrolumineszenzanordnung läßt sich als ein transparentes Display charakterisieren, welches im ausgeschalteten Zustand eine Transmission von über 80% (Durchschnittswert) aufweist. Die Funktionsweise des Displays beruht auf dem Effekt, daß eine fluoreszente Polymerlösung, die sich zwischen zwei Elektroden befindet, welche einen Abstand von 0,5 μm bis 10 μm aufweisen, zur Elektrolumineszenz angeregt werden kann .
Für eine ausreichend große Elektrolumineszenz in einer solchen transparenten Elektrolumineszenzanordnung ist eine hohe Photolumineszenzquantenausbeute in der Polymerlösung notwendig. Dabei ist es bei dem erfindungsgemäßen Aufbau von besonderem Vorteil, daß die Fluoreszenzquantenausbeute in einer Lösung wesentlich größer ist als in einer aus einer Lösung hergestellten Polymerschicht.
Unter einer "fluoreszenten Polymerlösung" wird eine Lösung eines Polymeren verstanden, das Fluoreszenzeigenschaften besitzt, oder eines Polymeren, das konjugierte Segmente enthält, die Ladungen übertragen können, wobei der Lösung neben diesem Polymeren noch niedermolekulare Fluoreszenzfarbstoffe zugesetzt worden sind. Entscheidend ist dabei, daß die Lösung sowohl zur Elektrolumineszenz angeregt werden kann, als auch in der Lage ist, die über die Kontakte injizierten Ladungen übertragen zu können.
Als polymere Materialien eignen sich sowohl fluoreszente konjugierte Polymere als auch Polymere mit isolierten Chromopho- ren in der Haupt- und/oder Seitenkette. Hierunter versteht man Atomgruppierungen, die einer Verbindung durch selektive Lichtabsorption "Farbigkeit" verleihen. Im allgemeinen handelt es sich bei den chromophoren Gruppen um EI-Elektro- nensysteme. Beispiele für solche Chromophore sind Atomgruppierungen wie C=C, C=0, C=S, N=0, C=N.
Als konjugiertes Polymer bezeichnet man Makromoleküle, welche die Fähigkeit besitzen, ri-Elektronen entlang der polymeren Kette zu delokalisieren, so daß diese halbleitende Eigenschaften anzeigen.
Polymere, die diese Eigenschaften aufweisen und erfindungs- gemäß verwendet werden können, sind unter anderem organolös- liche, substituierte Poly (p-arylenvinylen) -Derivate, Poly- fluorene, Polycarbazole, Poly (arylen-1, 3 , 4-oxadiazole) , Leiterpolymere, z.B. Poly (p-phenylen) -Derivate und Polythio- phene .
Die vorgenannten Poly (p-arylenvinylen) -Derivate sind u.a. in Bing R. Hsieh, Yuan Yu, Anita C. Van Laeken, Hookun Lee, Macromolecules 30 (1997) 8094 und S. Janietz, R. Friedrich, A. Wedel, Macromol . Chem. Phys . 200 (1999) 731 beschrieben.
Hierbei handelt es sich insbesondere um Poly (2-methoxy-5- ( (2 ' -ethylhexyl) -oxy) -p-phenylenvinylen) (MEH-PPV) mit der folgenden Strukturformel
sowie um Poly (2 , 5-dihexyl - l , 4 -phenylen-2 , 7 ( 8 ) -thianthrylen) (PHPT) der Formel
um Poly (2 , 5-dihexyl-l , 4-phenylenvinylen-2 , 7-thianthrenylen- vinylen) (PPVTV2,7) der Formel

Polyfluorene, die in der Polymerlösung der erfindungsgemäßen Elektrolumineszenzanordnung verwendet werden können, sind beispielsweise in N.H. Cho, J.K. Kim, D.Y. Kim, CY. Kim, Poly . Prepr. 38 (1997), 357, 417 beschrieben.
Es handelt sich hierbei um das Poly (9 , 9 ' -di-n-hexyl-2 , 7-fluo- rendiylvinylen-alt-1, 4-phenylenvinylen) (PDHFPPV) der Formel
worin R für n-Hexyl steht, um Poly (9, 9 ' -di-n-hexyl-2, 7-fluo- rendiylvinylen-alt-1, 3-phenylenvinylen (PDHFMPV) der Formel
worin R wie voranstehend definiert ist, und um Poly(9-n-he- xyl-2 , 7-fluorendiylvinylen-alt-l, 3-phenylenvinylen) der Formel
worin R ebenfalls für n-Hexyl steht.
J.H. Lee, J.W. Park, S.W. Choi, Synth. Met. 88 (1997) 31 beschreibt Polycarbazole, die ebenfalls zur Herstellung einer Polymerlösung eingesetzt werden können.
Erfindungsgemäß können insbesondere Polycarbazole mit den folgenden Strukturformeln eingesetzt werden:
Eine weitere Klasse von Polymeren, die zu diesem Zweck verwendet werden können, sind die Poly (arylen-1, 3 , 4-oxadiazole) Diese sind beispielsweise in der deutschen Patentanmeldung 198 40 195.7 beschrieben.
Hierbei handelt es sich insbesondere um aromatische Poly- (1, 3,4-heterodiazole) umfassend 100 bis 1000 wiederkehrende Einheiten, ausgewählt aus der Gruppe bestehend aus
worin R , R , R und R4 gleich oder unterschiedlich sein können und jeweils für eine Alkyl-, Alkoxy- , Phenyl-, Phenoxy- oder Thiophenol-Gruppierung stehen und X für S, 0 oder N- Phenyl steht .
In bezug auf weiteren Einzelheiten wird auf die Anmeldungsunterlagen verwiesen.
Schließlich können auch Leiterpolymere, z.B. Poly (p-pheny- len) -Derivate und Polythiophene, wie bereits erwähnt, zur Herstellung der Polymerlösung eingesetzt werden. Diese Polymeren sind beispielsweise in U. Scherf, K. Müllen, Macromol . Chem. Rapid Commun. 12 (1991) 489 bzw. J. Roneali, Chem. Rev. 97 (1997) 173 beschrieben.
Es handelt sich hierbei insbesondere um ein Leiterpolymer der allgemeinen Formel
worin R1 für C6H4-C10H21 und R für C6H13 steht.
Zu den Polymaterialien mit isolierten Chromophoren gehören sowohl Polymere mit chromophoren Seitenketten als auch Haupt- kettenpolymere mit isolierten chromophoren Einheiten, die ebenfalls als aktive Emittermaterialien in der Lösung eingesetzt werden können.
Polymere mit chromophoren Seitenketten sind beispielsweise in M. Aguiar, F.E. Karasz, L. Ackelrud, Macromolecules 29 (1996) 3161 beschrieben. Hauptkettenpolymere mit isolierten chromophoren Einheiten sind Gegenstand der Veröffentlichung von M.A. Keegstra, V. Cimrova, D. Neher, U. Scherf, Macromol. Chem. Phys., 197 (1996) 2511.
Von diesen können erfindungsgemäß insbesondere eingesetzt werden das Poly (p- (stilbenylmethoxy) styrol) der Formel
Poly (styrol- co- (p- (stilbenylmethoxy) styrol) der Formel
sowie 4 bis 6 Phenylgruppen enthaltende Polymere der allgemeinen Formel
worin m für 4 oder 6 steht .
Als organische Lösungsmittel zur Herstellung der Polymerlösung lassen sich alle gängigen organischen Lösungsmittel verwenden, in denen die vorgenannten Polymeren eine entsprechende Löslichkeit aufweisen. Beispiele für solche Lösungsmittel sind Toluol, Essigsäureethylester, Tetrahydrofuran, Chloroform, Ethanol, Aceton, Acetonitril, Dimethylformamid und entsprechende Gemische. Der Einsatz von polaren Lösungsmitteln ist bevorzugt .
Die Konzentration des Polymeren in dem Lösungsmittel beträgt im allgemeinen 0,5 bis 15 Gew. % und vorzugsweise 2 bis 8 Gew. -% .
Wird der Lösung zusätzlich ein niedermolekularer Fluoreszenzfarbstoff zugesetzt, so beträgt dessen Konzentration in der Polymerlösung 0,05 bis 2 Gew.-% und vorzugsweise 0,1 bis 1 Gew. -% .
Solche niedermolekulare Fluoreszenzfarbstoffe sind beispielsweise Perylenfarbstoffe wie z.B Lumogen RED300 (Hersteller: BASF) .
Diese Fluoreszenzfarbstoffe können entweder direkt zu der Polymerlösung gegeben oder zunächst in einem Lösungsvermittler gelöst und anschließend der Polymerlösung zugesetzt werden.
Zur Herstellung der erfindungsgemäßen Elektrolumineszenzanordnung wird die Polymerlösung, die gegebenenfalls Fluoreszenzfarbstoffe enthält, auf ein entsprechendes transparentes Substrat aufgebracht, auf dem sich ebenfalls transparente Elektroden bzw. elektrische Kontakte befinden.
Als transparente leitfähige Elektroden (ITO) eignen sich neben den eingangs erwähnten Materialien solche, die hohe Aus- trittsarbeit (> 4,5 eV) (Gold, Platin) besitzen. Die ITO- Schichten müssen durch spezielle Aufdampfverfahren (RF-Sput- tern) so ausgeführt werden, daß sie sowohl eine hohe optische Transparenz (> 80%) als auch einen niedrigen Oberflächenwiderstand (< 1 kΩ/D) besitzen. Die typischen Schichtdicken müssen deshalb zwischen 80 und 150 nm liegen.
Nach dem Anlegen einer positiven oder negativen elektrischen Spannung oder auch WechselSpannung an die erfindungsgemäße transparente Anordnung kann eine Lichtemission (Elektrolumineszenz) entsprechend der Photolumineszenz der Lösung beobachtet werden. Die Transmission der gesamten Anordnung resultiert aus dem Produkt der Transmission der beiden ITO-Elektroden und der dünnen Polymerlösung und ist größer als 80% (im sichtbaren Spektralbereich) .
Voraussetzung für die Funktionsweise der transparenten Elektrolumineszenzanordnung ist es, daß die Konzentration des Polymers in der Lösung bzw. die Konzentration der Fluoreszenzfarbstoffe dem Photolumineszenzverhalten bei optischer Anregung optimal angepaßt wird. Dies ist dann der Fall, wenn die Konzentration dieser Komponenten, wie oben beschrieben, eingestellt wird.
Schließlich müssen sich die Elektroden in einem Abstand von einigen Nanometern bis zu einigen Mikrometern, bevorzugt im Bereich zwischen 50 nm bis 3 μm, voneinander befinden.
Die erfindungsgemäßen transparenten organischen Elektrolumi- neszenzanordnungen zeigen dann in Abhängigkeit von der Art oder Polarität der angelegten Spannung eine Elektrolumineszenz .
Die Erfindung wird durch die nachfolgenden Ausführungsbei- spiele näher erläutert :
BEISPIEL 1
Transparente Elektrolumineszenzanordnung mit einem PPV-Deri- vat (Polymer 1) der Formel: (Polymer 1 )
worin n = 8 bis 100 (vorzugsweise 8 bis 50) ist.
Auf einem ITO-Glassubstrat wird 1 ml einer 5%igen Lösung (Polymer 1 in Tetrahydrofuran gelöst) aufgebracht. Danach wird ein zweites ITO-Glassubstrat auf die vorher präparierte Probe so positioniert, daß ein Abstand der Elektroden von ca. 1 μm entsteht. Die Glaskanten werden mit einem Versiegelungsmaterial gegen Austrocknung der Lösung und gegen die Diffusion von Sauerstoff und Wasserdampf in das Device versiegelt. Dieses Device weist im ausgeschalteten Zustand eine Transmission von über 80% auf. Nach Kontaktierung der Elektroden und dem Anlegen einer negativen oder positiven Spannung an die ITO- Elektroden von ca. 15 V ist eine grüne Elektrolumineszenz zu beobachten. Die Transparenz der Anordnung im ausgeschalteten Zustand ist in Figur 2 und die Elektrolumineszenz der Anzeige in Figur 3 dargestellt.
BEISPIEL 2
Transparente Elektrolumineszenzanordnung mit einer Lösung, welche ein konjugiertes Polymer (Polymer 2) der Formel
(Polymer 2) enthält und in der ein niedermolekularer Fluoreszenzfarbstoff eingemischt ist, worin n = 8 bis 100 ist.
Zunächst wird eine Lösung (Toluol als Lösungsmittel) hergestellt, in der sich 0,5% eines Pyrelenfarbstoffs (Lumogen RED300) befinden, welche dann in eine 4%ige Lösung (Toluol als Lösungsmittel) des Polymers 2 (phenylsubstituiertes Poly (p-phenylenvinylen) ) im Verhältnis 1:5 eingemischt wird.
Danach wird dieses Gemisch (ca. 1 ml) auf einem ITO-Glassubstrat auf ebracht . Dann wird ein zweites ITO-Glassubstrat auf die vorher präparierte Probe so positioniert, daß ein Abstand der Elektroden von ca. 800 nm entsteht. Die Glaskanten werden mit einem Versiegelungsmaterial gegen Austrocknung der Lösung und gegen die Diffusion von Sauerstoff und Wasserdampf in das Device versiegelt.
Dieses Device weist im ausgeschalteten Zustand eine Transmission von über 70% auf. Nach Kontaktierung der Elektroden und dem Anlegen einer negativen oder positiven Spannung an die ITO-Elektroden von ca. 20 V ist eine rote Elektrolumineszenz (530 nm) zu beobachten.
BEISPIEL 3
Transparente Elektrolumineszenzanordnung mit einer Lösung, welche ein Polyvinylcarbazol (Polymer 3) der Formel ( Polymer 3 )
enthält, worin n = 10 bis 6000 ist.
Auf einem ITO-Glassubstrat wird 1 ml einer 5%igen Lösung (Polymer 3 in Tetrahydrofuran gelöst) aufgebracht. Danach wird ein zweites ITO-Glassubstrat auf die vorher präparierte Probe so positioniert, daß ein Abstand der Elektroden von ca. 1,2 μm entsteht. Die Glaskanten werden mit einem Versiegelungs- material gegen Austrocknung der Lösung und gegen die Diffusion von Sauerstoff und Wassserdampf in das Device versiegelt .
Dieses Device weist im ausgeschalteten Zustand eine Transmission von über 90% auf. Nach Kontaktierung der Elektroden und dem Anlegen einer negativen oder positiven Spannung an die ITO-Elektroden von ca. 13 V ist eine blaue Elektrolumineszenz (490 nm) zu beobachten.

Claims

PATENTANSPRÜCHE
1. Elektrolumineszenzanordnung umfassend zwei auf einem Substrat (3) aufgebrachte transparente elektrische Kontakte (2) und eine zwischen den Kontakten (2) und einer Versiegelung (4) befindliche fluoreszente Polymerlösung (1) .
2. Elektrolumineszenzanordnung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch g e k e n n z e i c h n e t, daß die fluoreszente Polymerlösung in der Lage ist, die über die Kontakte injizierten Ladungen zu übertragen.
3. Elektrolumineszenzanordnung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch g e k e n n z e i c h n e t, daß die fluoreszente Polymerlösung ein konjugiertes Polymer enthält, das halbleitend ist.
4. Elektrolumineszenzanordnung nach Anspruch 3, dadurch g e k e n n z e i c h n e t, daß das konjugierte Polymer ein Polymer, ausgewählt aus Poly (p-arylenvinylen) -Derivaten, Polyfluorenen, Polycarbazolen, Poly (arylen-1, 3 , 4-oxadiazo- len) , Poly (p-phenylen) -Derivaten und Polythiophenen, ist.
5. Elektrolumineszenzanordnung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch g e k e n n z e i c h n e t, daß die fluoreszente Polymerlösung ein Polymer mit isolierten Chromophoren enthält.
6. Elektrolumineszenzanordnung nach Anspruch 1, dadurch g e k e n n z e i c h n e t, daß die fluoreszente Polymerlösung konjugierte Polymere zusammen mit niedermolekularen Fluoreszenzfarbstoffen enthält.
7. Elektrolumineszenzanordnung nach den Ansprüchen 1 bis 6, dadurch g e k e n n z e i c h n e t, daß die fluoreszente Polymerlösung eine Polymerkonzentration von 0,5 bis 1,5 Gew. % aufweist .
8. Elektrolumineszenzanordnung nach Anspruch 6 oder 7, dadurch g e k e n n z e i c h n e t, daß die fluoreszente Polymerlösung eine Konzentration von niedermolekularen Fluoreszenzfarbstoffen im Bereich von 0,05 bis 2 Gew.-% aufweist .
9. Elektrolumineszenzanordnung nach den Ansprüchen 1 bis 8, dadurch g e k e n n z e i c h n e t, daß der Abstand zwischen den elektrischen Kontakten 50 nm bis 3 μm beträgt.
