Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a cylinder head cover for covering a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine according to the preamble of claim 1.
  • the head cover for covering the top of the cylinder head is prepared as a separate component from the air cleaner.
  • this arrangement leads to an increase in number of parts to be fabricated.
  • the separate arrangement tends to make the entire engine system rather bulky and heavy.
  • JP-A-9(1997)-112358 teaches a one-piece structure of a cylinder head cover and an air cleaner.
  • the air cleaner formed integral with the head cover, is disposed on the top of the head cover.
  • the reduction of the height of the head cover can be achieved simply by reducing the internal volumes of the separation chamber and the air cleaner.
  • downsizing of the chamber and the cleaner may cause a lowering of gas/liquid separation efficiency in the separation chamber or deterioration of the noise-absorbing function for intake gases in the air cleaner.
  • blowby gas extraction tube made of e.g. rubber for conducting blowby gases from the cylinder head cover to the throttle body, as disclosed in JP-A-1(1989)-290907.
  • the extraction tube is connected, at one end, to the blowby gas extraction port of the head cover and, at the other end, to the blowby gas inlet port of the throttle body.
  • blowby gas extraction tube needs to be prepared in addition to other necessary components. Also, due to the increased number of parts to be used, the fabrication procedure of the engine system may become time-consuming. What is worse, the conventional blowby gas extraction tube is often clogged by the freezing of liquid which has been separated from blowby gases.
  • EP-A-0 432 012 Known from EP-A-0 432 012, with respect to which claim 1 is delimited, is a cylinder head cover with an air filtering element that is entirely accomodated within an upper casing.
  • the ignition coils are arranged in a dust case of an air filter.
  • the present invention has been proposed under the circumstances described above. It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a novel arrangement of a cylinder head cover which does not suffer the above problems.
  • the air cleaner is connected to a throttle body above the separation chamber, and that the separation chamber is provided with a blowby gas extraction port which is directly connected to a blowby gas inlet port of the throttle body.
  • the air cleaner may include a dust case, a clean case and a filtering element.
  • the clean case may be detachably attached to the dust case from above.
  • the filtering element may be disposed between the dust case and the clean case.
  • the dust case may accommodate ignition coils for cylinders of the internal combustion engine.
  • the ignition coils are protected by the dust case of the air cleaner, whereby no additional protecting means needs to be provided for the ignition coils. Further, advantageously the ignition coils are cooled down by the gas flow within the air cleaner.
  • the separation chamber may be elongated along the row of the cylinders of the engine, thereby increasing the inner volume of the chamber.
  • the cylinder head cover of the second aspect may further include a first contact surface in which the blowby gas extraction port has an opening.
  • the first contact surface may be pressed against a second contact surface of the throttle body in which the blowby gas inlet port has an opening.
  • the first contact surface may be held horizontally or substantially horizontally with the blowby gas extraction port directed upward.
  • the second contact surface may be held horizontally or substantially horizontally with the blowby gas inlet port directed downward.
  • Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate a cylinder head cover according to a first embodiment of the present invention.
  • numeral 1 refers to a cylinder head of an internal combustion engine.
  • the engine includes three cylinders A1, A2 and A3 arranged in a row.
  • a cam mechanism responsible for actuating e.g. inlet or exhaust valves is accommodated in a valve system chamber 2 located at the top of the cylinder head 1.
  • the cylinder head cover (generally indicated by numeral 3) is detachably fixed to the cylinder head 1 to close the valve system chamber 2.
  • the cylinder head cover 3 includes a suitably profiled housing in which an air filtering element 4c and a gas/liquid separation chamber 5 for blowby gases are provided.
  • the profiled housing includes a lower casing (dust case) 4a and an upper casing (clean case) 4b which is detachably attached to the lower casing 4a from above.
  • the filtering element 4c is disposed between the lower and the upper casings 4a, 4b, thereby partitioning the space defined by the two casings 4a, 4b.
  • the lower and the upper casings 4a, 4b and the above-mentioned filtering element 4c constitute an air cleaner 4.
  • the lower casing 4a of the air cleaner 4 is disposed at substantially the same level with and adjacent to the separation chamber 5.
  • the separation chamber 5 tapers upward (i.e., in the height direction of the air cleaner 4), with its apex located higher than the inner bottom surface of the lower casing 4a.
  • the separation chamber 5, as shown in Fig. 2 is elongated along the row of the cylinders A1-A3 of the engine.
  • the height of the air cleaner 4 is not additional to the height of the separation chamber 5.
  • the overall height of the cylinder head cover 3 is made advantageously smaller, while the individual heights of the cleaner 4 and the chamber 5 can be made greater.
  • the internal volumes of the cleaner 4 and the chamber 5 are made sufficiently large, which is advantageous to providing an excellent gas/lubricant separation function in the separation chamber 5 and an excellent noise-absorbing function in the air cleaner 4.
  • the chamber 5 is elongated along the row of the three cylinders A1-A3 (see Fig. 2). This structure serves to ensure a sufficiently large internal volume of the chamber 5.
  • an air inlet tube 6 is connected to the lower casing 4a for supply of the air.
  • the lower casing 4a is internally provided with coil-disposing portions at which three ignition coils 7 are placed. As readily seen, each coil 7 is provided for the relevant one of the cylinders A1-A3 of the internal combustion engine.
  • the upper casing 4b is connected to the inlet manifold 8 via a throttle body 9 and an inlet duct 10 with a bellows.
  • the throttle body 9 is fixed, at one end, to the manifold 8 and, at the other end, is detachably fitted into the inlet duct 10.
  • the inlet duct 10, made of an elastic material such as rubber, is connected to a blowby gas extraction port 11 extending from the separation chamber 5.
  • the blowby gas extraction port 11 is detachably fitted into the inlet duct 10.
  • blowby gas leaked into the valve system chamber 2 flows into the separation chamber 5, to be subjected to gas/lubricant separation. Then, the lubricant-removed gas is conducted through the blowby gas extraction port 11, to joint the main flow passing through the inlet duct 10.
  • FIG. 3-5 illustrating the arrangement of a cylinder head cover according to a second embodiment of the present invention.
  • the illustrated internal combustion engine includes a cylinder head 1 which is similar in arrangement to the counterpart shown in Figs. 1 and 2. On top of the cylinder head 1, there is provided a cylinder head cover 30 for enclosing a valve system chamber 2.
  • the head cover 30 is made of a synthetic resin and is detachably fixed to the cylinder head 1.
  • the cylinder head 1 is connected, at one side thereof, to an inlet manifold 80 provided with a surge tank 80a.
  • the cylinder head cover 30 is formed integral with an air cleaner 40 and with a gas/liquid separation chamber 50 for blowby gases.
  • the air cleaner 40 includes a lower casing (dust case) 40a which is disposed at substantially the same level with the separation chamber 50.
  • the lower casing 40a and the separation chamber 50 are arranged adjacent to each other.
  • the apex of the separation chamber 50 is located above the inner bottom surfaces of the lower casing 40a.
  • the lower casing 40a is connected to an air inlet tube for taking in the air.
  • Within the lower casing 40a there are provided a prescribed number of ignition coils 70 for the respective cylinders of the internal combustion engine.
  • the air cleaner 40 further includes an upper casing (clean case) 40b and a filtering element 40c.
  • the upper casing 40b made of a synthetic resin, is detachably connected to the lower casing 40a from above.
  • the filtering element 40c is provided between the lower and the upper casings 40a, 40b.
  • Numeral 90 refers to a throttle body which is provided with a throttle valve 90b.
  • the throttle body 90 is formed with a gas inlet bore 90a in which the throttle valve 90b is accommodated.
  • the throttle body 90 is located above the separation chamber 50 and is connected, at one end, to a side of the surge tank 80a by bolts 12 (see Figs. 3 and 5).
  • the throttle body 90 is detachably fitted into an air exit 40d formed in the upper casing 40b of the air cleaner 40.
  • a sealing ring 13 made of an elastic material such as rubber.
  • the head cover 30 includes a horizontal upper surface 14 contacting with the throttle body 90 above the separation chamber 50.
  • the upper surface 14 is formed with a blowby gas extraction port 110 which is open upward.
  • the throttle body 90 on the other hand, includes a horizontal bottom surface 15 contacting closely with the upper surface 14 of the head cover 30. Thus, the throttle body 90 is stably positioned on the head cover 30.
