Definitions
- the present invention relates to methods and Devices for image generation in digital dental Radioscopy, and in particular on methods and devices, where sensor arrays are used, their picture elements are smaller than it is for the desired spatial resolution is required.
- Diagnostic device is also a correction device provided to accommodate fluctuations in the electrical signals of the individual elements of the CCD array due to dark current the same, due to a different conversion efficiency the same and due to inhomogeneities to compensate for the scintillator layer.
- the size of the picture elements also known as pixels CCD sensors are usually the ones you want Adapted spatial resolution. Furthermore, picture elements that are smaller than the desired spatial resolution then, with image information of neighboring image elements can already be summarized on the sensor. This The procedure is known as binning. This creates an effective picture element, the size of which is in turn the desired one Corresponds to spatial resolution. In digital dental radioscopy is typically a resolution of 50 microns to 60 ⁇ m required. A higher resolution is usually not useful as it is used to convert X-rays As a rule, the scintillator required in visible light no higher resolution allowed.
- the total area required for such a sensor for dental radioscopy is several square centimeters, since with a smaller total area of the sensor it is difficult to display an entire tooth on a single x-ray image.
- the size of the sensors is based on the size of common dental films, which usually starts at a size of 2 x 3 cm 2 .
- a such absorption of X-ray quanta in the silicon of CCD sensor is referred to below as a "direct hit".
- This effect is undesirable because of the scintillator layer converted X-ray quanta only a small charge generate in the CCD sensor, typically in the range a few hundred electrons.
- Direct hits however generate a very large charge, typically in the tens of thousands of electrons range.
- a direct one Hit typically generates 50 times more charge than an X-ray quantum converted in the scintillator. So wear direct hits very strongly to the picture noise.
- Another problem with known sensors is that it only succeeds in the most favorable cases, sensors of the named to produce geometrical size completely error-free. Frequently fall single picture elements or several neighboring picture elements, so-called clusters, or even entire lines or Columns of the sensor. Both defects occur where the broken picture element or pixel without exposure generates a large image signal, as well as defects in which the defective picture element generates no picture signal despite exposure. It differs depending on the number and type of such defects you have different sensor qualities for different Applications are suitable. If the number of defects is too large, i.e. if the sensor quality is too low, the sensor cannot be used for the intended purpose, i.e. for dental Radioscopy, used by the dentist the defective picture elements may be important picture information missed. However, this has the consequence that a significant Proportion of sensors produced not used can be, reducing the price of the sensors that can be used is noticeably increased.
- US-A-5617461 teaches using at least one calibration image to generate a defect image. Under use the defect image is then taken by an object Corrected image, this correction by a linear interpolation takes place.
- US-A-5465284 shows how a plurality of CCD sensors processed to form a picture element can be. This contrasts the spatial resolution of the image the resolution of the sensor decreases while the signal to noise ratio is improved.
- the present invention is based on the knowledge that it is possible, sensor arrays, the picture elements are smaller than the desired spatial resolution, even then for the dental one Use radioscopy when individual picture elements of the sensor array are defective or if individual picture elements of the Sensor arrays deliver incorrect output signals.
- Such wrong Output signals of individual picture elements can, for example through the "direct hits" described above be conditional.
- the present invention provides a method of imaging in digital dental Radioscopy using a sensor array where one A plurality of picture elements each have an effective picture element form, initially based on the capture first and second reference signals defective picture elements of the Sensor arrays can be determined. In the subsequent recording The image of an object is only shown as non-defective certain picture elements used.
- each RMS consists of a plurality of picture elements, the output signal for an effective picture element for example by averaging of the detected signals of each picture element of this effective picture element is produced.
- the Defective picture elements according to the invention that is Output signal for the effective picture element only below Generated using the picture elements of this effective picture element, that were not determined to be defective. So it is possible according to the invention, sensor arrays, the defective picture elements have, without significant loss of quality of the produced Image for dental radioscopy.
- defective picture elements are determined by the respective Reference signals for a particular picture element be detected, compared to a threshold value, wherein a picture element is determined to be defective when the reference signals of the picture element substantially from the threshold differ.
- the threshold value can be, for example in each case the mean value from the first reference signals of all Picture elements or the mean value from the second reference signals of all picture elements can be used.
- the present invention provides a method of imaging in digital dental Radioscopy using a sensor array of the above Kind in which electrical signals that form the image of a Represent object by means of the sensor array. Then one is captured for a respective picture element Signal evaluated whether the picture element directly was hit by an X-ray quantum.
- This review will on the basis of at least the picture element to be evaluated neighboring picture elements performed. Preferably becomes the signal detected for the picture element to be evaluated with an average of a plurality of for neighboring Pixels detected signals compared, if so a predetermined signal for the picture element to be evaluated Dimension deviates from the mean given above, it is assessed that the signal is a direct hit of the associated Picture element indicated by an X-ray quantum.
- the output signals used that did not hit directly display an X-ray quantum At the subsequent generation of the image, only the output signals used that did not hit directly display an X-ray quantum.
- the invention thus enables according to the second aspect, which was caused by direct hits Eliminate image noise or at least greatly reduce, which
- the two aspects mentioned above can be combined in one Methods of imaging may be combined so that the combined process both the use of sensors with lower Quality, i.e. with a large number of picture element defects and / or column or row defects, for the digital dental radioscopy allowed, as well as the image quality improved by causing direct hits Image noise is eliminated or greatly reduced.
- the present invention further provides devices that suitable for performing the methods described above are.
- the devices according to the invention are opposite conventional devices for digital dental radioscopy inexpensive to manufacture because, as explained above, too Low quality sensors are used in the same can. Furthermore, the devices according to the invention enable the creation of higher quality images by the Reduce image noise caused by direct hits.
- the present invention thus enables improvement the diagnostic value of dental X-rays with a simultaneous reduction in manufacturing costs of imaging devices by reducing the Sensor cost.
- the single figure shows schematically a section of a Sensor arrays used to practice the present invention suitable is.
- an effective picture element is made up of 5 x 5 picture elements educated.
- this number is purely exemplary, with other divisions in the same way are conceivable.
- the resolution is digital X-ray sensors typically limited to approx. 50 ⁇ m, so that the side length of an effective picture element 100 50 microns is.
- the individual picture elements 1 to 25 have the illustrated embodiment thus an area of each 1.0 ⁇ m x 10 ⁇ m.
- the first dental x-ray is now taken an image with homogeneous irradiation of the sensor, a so-called bright image, generated and read out. following becomes a second image without irradiating the sensor, a so-called dark image, generated and read out.
- Both images have characteristic features, for example an average gray value, whereupon all picture elements, whose output signals differ significantly from the characteristic ones Features differ, are marked as defective.
- all picture elements whose gray values in the Dark image a gray value above a predetermined Threshold values are marked as defective.
- all picture elements in the bright picture have a gray value below a predetermined gray value, be marked as defective.
- the final bright image or the final dark picture by a picture element Averaging, for example, 10 bright images each or 10 dark images are generated.
- the mean gray values and the associated standard deviation in the two averages Pictures i.e. the final bright image and the final one Dark picture determined.
- All picture elements whose gray value in averaged dark image above a predetermined threshold , or whose gray value in the averaged bright image is below one predetermined threshold is marked as defective.
- the section of a sensor shown in the figure are, for example, in the RMS element designated 200 two picture elements 7 and 19 marked as defective.
- the manufacturing costs of the sensors be reduced.
- the number of defective picture elements can occur after long use of the sensor grow through radiation damage. It is therefore recommended the process described above, i.e. the shooting of dark or bright images to be repeated periodically, for example after every 100 X-rays. Through this periodic repetition ensures that the sensor delivers error-free output signals even after prolonged use.
- the influence is defective Image elements assigned to an effective image element Output signal eliminated according to the invention by the Defect picture elements in the averaging for the effective picture element are not taken into account.
- a second aspect of the present invention in order to high resolution dental radioscopy a quality improvement an image acquired by means of a sensor array realizing this is through direct hits Eliminate image noise caused or at least strong to diminish.
- This elimination takes place according to the invention of the image noise component generated by direct hits in dental x-rays in that the for a single picture element stored information with those of the neighboring picture elements are compared.
- There the light of an X-ray quantum converted in the scintillator not only due to the small picture elements of the CCD sensor in the picture element directly below the place of conversion is detected, but also in the neighboring picture elements, the picture information should be in neighboring picture elements be about the same size.
- One problem can be that the number of people hit directly Image elements during the required exposure time is too large, i.e. that too few picture elements for the signal evaluation remain.
- the exposure time divided into partial exposure times by reading the sensor several times during the irradiation so that the condition mentioned, i.e. a small number of direct hits on the CCD sensor, for the partial images is satisfied.
- CCD sensors used are less suitable because during readout with simultaneous irradiation Image information in the so-called typically used Full frame CCD sensors are blurred.
- the image information is line by line transferred to a readout register and read out there, which usually takes several tenths of a second. Will during this process continues to be irradiated, i.e. another one Partial exposure performed, the current overlap Drawing files with those shifted in the direction of the readout register Partial images.
- the present invention thus provides methods and devices which generate high quality x-ray images using an image sensor array, which may have defective picture elements. So can the committee in the manufacture of sensor arrays for the dental radioscopy can be greatly reduced, reducing the cost significantly reduced for such sensor arrays. moreover enables the present invention to record qualitatively high-quality X-ray images, because X-ray quanta directly hit them Image elements not taken into account in image processing become. This allows images with an increased signal-to-noise ratio will be realized.
- the present invention can be readily accomplished using a method for pixel-by-pixel correction of the electrical signals, generated by each element of a sensor device are combined to optimize the image quality be, as described for example in DE-A-19615178 is.
- a correction device connected to the sensor device to the electrical signals generated by the CCD array to correct for fluctuations in electrical signals, which together represent an image of an object, the individual Elements of the CCD array due to the dark current the same, due to a different conversion efficiency the same and due to inhomogeneities of the To compensate for the scintillator layer.
- This compensation can achieve the light and dark signals described above be used. While capturing the Light and dark signals, also referred to as reference signals and the one corresponding to the image of an object The sensor device receives signals on a kept constant temperature. This can influence the Temperature dependence of the dark current or the conversion efficiency of the individual picture elements on the resulting Image will be eliminated.
- the generated light or dark image as reference signals for this correction method can be used. It's just that realized second aspect of the present invention the reference signals necessary for the correction process generated separately.
- the values for O ij and G ij are determined for each pixel, ie for each sensor element of the sensor array.
- Two images are required to determine the same: an image without radiation and an image with known radiation.
- the known radiation can be, for example, the maximum permissible radiation.
- these images in the absence of radiation and a known radiation are advantageously generated by averaging a number of images under constant conditions.
- Gw max represents a target value at maximum irradiation that all pixels of the sensor array should have.
- the correction value G ij 'thus specifies a factor by which the gray scale value of each pixel must be multiplied so that the same gray scale value is output for each pixel when all sensor elements are irradiated uniformly.
- An image characterized by the gray values Gw ij is corrected as follows: the corrected gray values Gw ' ij result from pixel-by-pixel subtraction of the offset values O ij of each pixel from the gray values of each pixel representing an image and the subsequent pixel-by-pixel multiplication by the gain normalization values G. ij '.
- gw ' ij (Gw ij -O ij )G ij '
- Equations (1) to (7) provide the basis for this Correction procedures to improve the image quality. These equations can be used for pixel-by-pixel gain and offset correction in the field of dental digital radiography be used.
- the offset values O ij and thus also the gain normalization values G ij ' are strongly temperature-dependent. If the offset values and the gain normalization values are determined at a certain temperature, but the image to be corrected is recorded at a different temperature, the image quality is not improved, but rather, with a high probability, deteriorates. For this reason, the temperature of the CCD sensor must be kept constant during the acquisition of the reference signals and the acquisition of the signals representing an image. A constant sensor temperature can be achieved in different ways.
- the CCD sensor can be on the back with a heating element be provided, the temperature of the sensor by a active control is kept constant.
- a heating element be provided, the temperature of the sensor by a active control is kept constant.
- For measuring the temperature can, for example, additionally use temperature sensors be applied to the carrier of the CCD sensor or also in be integrated into the CCD sensor. If unexposed on the sensor CCD elements, so-called “dark reference pixels", are applied, these elements can be due to the strong Temperature dependence of the dark current for temperature measurement be used.
- the temperature can optionally be controlled the clock frequency of the CCD sensor can be controlled.
- the temperature of the sensor device for example by means of temperature sensors, which in addition applied to the carrier of the CCD sensor are detected, a controlled control of the temperature of the sensor device to enable.
- the sensor element can between two x-rays, for example in kept at a predetermined temperature in a water bath become.
- This predetermined temperature can, for example the body temperature. This ensures that the sensor element does not cool down between the x-rays.
- Another essential requirement for successful Use of the gain / offset correction consists in that the relative position of the sensor device opposite the X-ray source is constant, or at least that it is ensured that the X-ray dose rate over the entire Sensor area is constant to a decrease in image brightness towards the edge of the picture, a so - called "shading" avoid. Instructs the sensor device with respect to the X-ray source no constant radiation geometry on, the profit correction is not carried out correctly, which creates an artificial shading. To avoid this problem, for example a film holder analog arrangement, in which the middle of the CCD sensor from the central beam of the X-ray source is used.
- the correction procedure thus creates an optimization of the Image quality in the field of digital dental radiography through the use of pixel by pixel win and offset correction at a constant temperature of the sensor device.
- the pixel-by-pixel gain / offset correction both eliminates the consequences of manufacturing-related differences in dark current and conversion efficiency of the individual picture elements, as also the consequences of inhomogeneities in the on the CCD sensor applied scintillator layer.
- a requirement for the improvement of the image quality by a pixel by pixel Gain / offset correction is (a) a constant temperature the CCD sensor and (b) a constant radiation geometry or homogeneous radiation.
- the correction method described together enables with the methods according to the present invention Creation of even higher quality images yourself compared to commonly used X-ray doses low radiation intensities.
- CCD arrays instead of the one described CCD arrays also a photodiode array or a charge injection device or a CMOS image sensor array can be used.
