Abstract

The invention concerns a method for cultivating corn and like crops with similar morphology, whereby the seeds are sown along parallel furrows. Along each furrow are placed at regular intervals two seeds (10-11, 12-13, 14-15) at a slight distance from each other, thereby enabling to improve yield and days to harvest.

Description

New process for growing corn and similar plants.
The present invention relates to a new process for the cultivation of corn and similar plants.
It is known that corn is generally sown in parallel lines sufficiently spaced to allow the passage of cultivation machines, a corn seed being deposited for example approximately every twenty five centimeters. The corn is sown in a conventional manner using seeders with rotary distributors which deposit the seeds individually in the vicinity of a tool which causes their slight burial in the soil.
The invention relates to a method of cultivating corn, which by a particular arrangement of the seeds at the time of sowing allows the corn to develop in better conditions, which results in earlier maturity as well as a higher yield.
The present invention relates to a new method of growing corn and similar plants, of the type in which the seeds are sown in parallel rows, characterized in that along each line, there is at regular intervals a group of two seeds located at a short distance from each other, for example about 7 to 12 cm.
Ainsi, alors -que les rangs de maïs sont espacés par exemple de 50 à 100 cm, cha-que groupe de graines est constitué par deux graines espacées d'environ 7 à 12 centimètres et de préférence de 8 à 9 centimètres, alors que les différents groupes sont placés par exemple à des intervalles de 25 à 45 centimètres et de préférence deThus, while the rows of corn are spaced, for example, from 50 to 100 cm, each group of seeds consists of two seeds spaced about 7 to 12 cm apart and preferably 8 to 9 cm, while the different groups are placed for example at intervals of 25 to 45 centimeters and preferably of
Surprisingly, it has been found that this way of sowing maize has an important influence on the quality of the harvest both in terms of its earliness and its yield.
When, according to the state of the art, the corn seeds are arranged at regular intervals of the order of 15 to 20 centimeters, the corn plants develop by disposing their leaves in a substantially regular manner around the entire periphery of their vertical stem.
On the contrary, with the method according to the invention, the two maize plants of the same group develop mutually annoying each other, which means that the leaves of the two plants remain parallel to each other while developing perpendicular to the row.
This has the effect of providing them with better sunshine and better aeration, with the result, a vegetation which grows in better conditions, which leads to greater precocity and to a higher yield.
Ceci correspond à une amélioration d'environ 30 à 40 points de l'indice FAO.The experiments which have been carried out with the process which has just been described have made it possible to note that a variety of maize, cultivated according to the process of the invention matures approximately one to two weeks earlier than the same maize cultivated of conventionally, the seed yield of the corn being approximately 5 to 10% higher. This corresponds to an improvement of around 30 to 40 points in the FAO index.
It is already known to sow maize in bunches of 2 or 3 seeds arranged randomly at distances between bunches of the order of 25 to 40 cm, but the random positioning of the seeds of the same pack means that the seedlings corn grow in a disorderly manner in all directions which does not allow to obtain the advantages inherent in the present invention according to which the seeds are sown on the same line in groups of two, being separated by about 7 to 12 centimeters.
The process which has just been described is not limited to corn and it can also be applied to the cultivation of all plants of the same type such as for example sugar cane.
The present invention also relates to a seed drill for implementing the process which has just been described, characterized in that it distributes in the soil along a line, groups of two seeds separated by about 7 to 12 cm, each group being placed approximately every 25 to 45 cm.
In accordance with the invention, the seeds are all the closer together as the corn belongs to an earlier variety. Thus with early or irrigated varieties, we can place the two seeds of a group about 7 cm from each other by depositing a group every 25 cm, which gives a row in which the corn seeds are alternately distant from each other by 7 and 18 cm approximately.
Dans le but de mieux faire comprendre l'invention, on va en décrire maintenant à titre d'exemple un mode de réalisation particulier représenté sur le dessin annexé dans lequel :On the other hand, with late varieties, the seeds can be alternately placed at distances of 12 and 30 cm approximately, which corresponds to the deposition of a group of seeds approximately every 42 cm. In order to better understand the invention, we will now describe by way of example a particular embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing in which:
- la figure 1 représente une vue schématique de dessus de deux rangs de maïs cultivés selon la méthode traditionnelle,FIG. 1 represents a schematic top view of two rows of corn cultivated according to the traditional method,
- la figure 2 est une vue de dessus de deux rangs de maïs cultivés conformément à l'invention,FIG. 2 is a top view of two rows of corn cultivated according to the invention,
There is shown schematically in Figure 1 a top view of two rows of corn obtained according to the method usually used from seeds sown at regular intervals of about 15 cm.
It is known that by operating in this way, the various corn plants 1,2,3,4,5 etc. develop vertically with their leaves regularly distributed around their periphery, forming a sort of continuous hedge leaving practically no space between two neighboring corn plants.
There is shown schematically in Figure 2, a top view of two rows of corn sown in accordance with the invention in groups of two seeds arranged for example 8 cm from each other, with a group approximately every 30 cm, which corresponds to the same seed density per hectare as in the conventional process in Figure 1.
As can be seen schematically represented in FIG. 2, the corn plants according to the invention grow by developing their leaves perpendicular to the row, the median plane of the leaves of the same plant lying perpendicular to the sowing line.
The way in which the maize plants develop vertically with the leaves regularly distributed around their periphery, in the case of the known method, is shown in top view in FIG. 3.
On the contrary, in the top view of Figure 4, we see how the maize plants 12 and 13 belonging to the same group of two seeds, develop with their leaves located essentially in a plane perpendicular to the row of corn, which results in better sunshine and better air circulation between the corn stalks which therefore have earlier maturity and more abundant production.
This new cultivation process can be applied not only to corn but also to other plants, such as for example sugar cane, which have a similar morphology and which are cultivated in rows being sufficiently rigid so as not to need stakes. .
The invention can be easily implemented with a precision seed drill modified according to the invention so that its distributor delivers approximately every 25 to 45 cm two seeds spaced about 7 to 12 cm apart.
