Definitions
- the present invention relates to equipment to protect personnel exposed to threats called NBC (nuclear, bacteriological or chemical).
- Such individual equipment generally includes a helmet, a full face cover with fasteners for the attach to helmet and power line fitting in breathable or ventilation gas and a flexible envelope, frequently called "neck seal", to extend the helmet and face cover down as well as means waterproof connection between the helmet, the face cover and the envelope.
- the helmet provides protection against perforation and shock and moreover serves as a support for different elements such as earphones and transparent visor.
- This constitution allows staff not to use than the helmet when performing a mission that does not carries no NBC threat. This avoids the discomfort of pieces of equipment that completely envelop the face and neck.
- the first situation arises in particular on the helicopters that operate at low altitude and therefore are not equipped with an oxygen source under pressure and also on military transport aircraft operating at moderate altitude.
- the face cover has a clevis projecting upwards and having a transverse rod while the helmet has a fork intended for receive the rod.
- the link by rod and fork is supplemented by side fasteners carried by the face cover and engaged on the helmet.
- An object of the invention is to provide equipment protective clothing having a face cover which is easily installed and removed with one hand, in conditions that can be critical and require a fast action.
- the helmet wearer can look down at the socket and plug and can visually monitor the insertion.
- side fasteners may include racks permanently attached to the faceplate and enclosures carried by the roll bar and intended to receive the racks slidingly, provided with means constituting elastically biased pawls in engagement with racks when inserting the racks.
- the helmet wearer rotate the cover around the axis of rotation of the socket so that the fasteners side engage.
- the pawls can be connected by wire means intended for exert traction against elastic force elastic means and to release the racks.
- the equipment according to the invention can be considered as an enhancement to that described in the U.S. Patent No. 5,575,278, to which reference may be made.
- the invention relates more particularly to equipment having the general constitution shown schematically in Figure 1.
- the equipment includes a helmet 10, a face cover 12 having a visor or transparent glasses 14, and an envelope 16.
- the face cover has a valve expiration 32, a nozzle 30 for connection to a conduit flexible air supply and possibly a nozzle beverage supply, placed symmetrically at the valve 32 relative to the vertical median plane of the face cover.
- the equipment further comprises a hoop 18 intended for allow to connect the helmet 10, the face cover 12 and the envelope 16 in a sealed manner.
- the arch 18 illustrated is removable and constitutes a unique piece. It includes a lower branch 20 in closed loop shape, intended to receive the envelope 16, and a transverse branch 22 in the shape of a U provided so that one side fits the helmet 10 and the other side fits face cover.
- the person to be protected only wears the helmet.
- the person to protect for example a helicopter pilot, adapts the casing 16 and the roll bar 18 to the helmet 10 before fitting the helmet.
- the means for attach the face cover 12 have a protruding yoke 60 upwards, having a transverse rod 62.
- the helmet 10 has a fork 64 intended to receive the rod 62 when slides the face cover up along the upper part of the transverse branch 22. Once the cover placed correctly, it can be fixed to the helmet by fasteners 24, preferably having a length adjustable.
- the wearer Before putting on the face cover, the wearer swing back an arm 66 which carries a microphone in front of his mouth.
- the arch 18 also has an envelope 16.
- the face cover 12 (FIG. 3) and the arch 18 are provided with means for sealingly attaching the face cover to the hoop.
- a first set of fixing means comprises a plug assembly 34 on the face cover ( Figures 3 and 5) and a bush 36 pivotally connected to the roll bar so that it can rotate around a horizontal axis (figures 2 and 4).
- the plug assembly 34 is permanently fixed to the face cover 12, for example by screws 38. It will include usually several mutually assembled parts, including a finger 40 and a plate 42 of insulating material, constituting a printed circuit carrying conductive tracks 44. The conductive tracks are connected to a microphone inside the face cover (not shown).
- a block 46 constitutes a stop limiting the degree of insertion of the plug in the socket.
- the socket 36 is placed between the arms of a support in U 48 and can rotate on an axis 50 placed in the support.
- the slewing range of the sleeve is limited by the support of a pin 52 which crosses the socket against the ends 54 of slots made in the support arm 48.
- a groove in the socket is provided to receive terminals 56 which cooperate with the tracks conductors 44 of the plug and which are normally connected to an audio circuit connected to a microphone mounted on an arm, similar to the arm 66 of FIG. 1.
- Springs 58 attached to the socket 36 and to the support 48 pulling the socket backwards. But the connection between the socket tilting and the support comprises means for retaining the socket in a forward tilted position when brought her to this position manually.
- the second set of fastening means comprises two racks 68 fixed laterally to an upper part of the face cover ( Figure 3).
- the racks are placed so as to be received in boxes 70 fixed to the hoop and each having a pawl 72 pushed elastically towards a position where they engage on the corresponding rack when inserting the latter, so that prohibit the removal of the rack.
- these pawls are connected by a wire 74 which passes through guides 76 carried by the upper part of the face cover.
- the pawl 72 pivots on the housing fixed to the headband.
- a spring 94 urges the pawl towards a position where it engages on the rack when this last one is inserted.
- Wire 74 is guided by an eyelet belonging to the housing, deflected by a curved surface 98 and connected to the ratchet at its end.
- connection structure shown in Figures 2-5 makes the installation and removal of the easy face cover, even with one hand.
- the person who wishes to place the face cover grab it with one hand and insert the plug 34 in socket 36. This operation can be visually monitored, since the socket is oriented forward and within the wearer's field of vision helmet. Then the wearer flips the face cover backwards, until the racks engage the housing 72 and be locked in a position where it there is sufficient contact pressure for sealing.
- the holder 48 contains a switch 49 to switch the headphone audio circuit of a microphone carried by an arm to a microphone placed the inside of the face cover, when the sleeve is tilted together with the face cover.
- the wearer pulls on the 74 thread. So the elasticity of the joints and the weight of the face covers move the latter forward. he can then be removed with one hand by tilting it further forward and lifting it.
- each cleat has a U-shaped support 78 fixed inside the shell of the helmet 10.
- a rod 80 connecting the arms of the support 78 pivotally supports a corner 82 urged by a spring 84 in a direction that approximates a surface gear 86 from the bottom corner of the support.
- Rod 80 carries also a roller 88 attached to the corner.
- the chin rest 90 (figure 7) passes between the bottom of each support and the respective corner intended to retain it. When we move them out from the plane helmet median, chin rests are released and can slide. 92 handles fixed at the ends of the strap are placed so as to be seized by the helmet wearer.
- the release can be done with one hand, pulling a handle outward relative to the median plane of the helmet.
- VASALVA maneuver Crew members of an airplane or helicopter have to rebalance the pressure in the ear internal when there is a rapid descent. This is usually made by the so-called VASALVA maneuver. The person pinch the nose with one hand and breathe until the ears are uncapped. Such a maneuver is no longer possible in NBC conditions, since the face cover prevents access to the nose.
- the valve expiration 32 can be provided with means allowing the close at will and the end piece of the nozzle 30 of the face cover can be fitted with a non-return valve.
- the means for forcibly closing the exhalation valve may include a cover or hood which closes the exhalation valve when rotated by hand. he it is then possible for the wearer of the equipment to provoke overpressure in the respiratory tract. For this purpose, it closes the exhalation valve, which causes the pressure build-up, since the exhaled air or oxygen does not can't escape. If necessary, the wearer can press the face cover over the face to increase the seal. Once the ears are opened, the wearer loose the cover (if it is elastically stressed towards its normal operating condition) or turn it to reverse to restore normal operation.
