Definitions
- the invention relates to an ignition system.
- a propellant charge especially for ammunition field artillery, including a tube in one combustible material, the inner wall of which is lined with an ignition charge which delimits a channel central inside the tube.
- the propellant charge of artillery ammunition usually consists of a stack of fuel containers containing said charge that is initiated using a means of flame transmission which is formed by the charge above ignition. So each container must either equipped with a very rapid ignition system between the ignition charge and propellant charge.
- Ignition systems for propellant charge are notably described in documents WO-8601584 and EP-A-475 207 each of these documents forming the basis of the preamble of claim 1.
- the charge is made up of annular pellets assembled or stacked in a tube.
- Each tablet is manufactured by compression, which requires the use of a powder (boron powder / potassium nitrate) with a small particle size in order to obtain cohesion and correct attire.
- a powder boron powder / potassium nitrate
- inflammation of a powder spreads all the more quickly as this one is not tightly packed on the one hand, and that a small particle size results in significant formation of gas harmful to the quality of the ignition on the other hand.
- the ignition transmission speed by such lozenges is therefore relatively small and in consequently, not sufficiently efficient.
- small particle size including a grain size between about 0.1 and 0.5 mm, and a speed of weak transmission of the order of a few milliseconds.
- the density of these pellets is relatively large, so we have to incorporate spacers of combustible material between the pellets to respect a mass ratio functional between ignition charge and charge propellant.
- the system ignition includes a compressed charge consisting of grains of powder mixed with a solvent, such as butylacetate.
- a solvent such as butylacetate.
- the assembly is then compressed to obtain a tubular element which is then introduced in a central hole of the propellant charge and maintained either by friction or by bonding.
- This system presents the disadvantages of the indicated compressed loads previously, since a powder is used necessarily of small particle size and obtained by compression.
- the object of the invention is to design a ignition system which is simple to make and inexpensive while having a speed of high ignition transmission and power significant inflammation to make up for the shortcomings ignition systems of the prior art.
- the invention proposes a system igniting a propellant charge, comprising a tube a combustible material, the inner wall of which is lined with an ignition charge which delimits a channel central inside the tube, and which is characterized by what the ignition charge is made up of several successive layers of agglomerated black powder grains with a binder.
- black powder has a grain size between 1 and 2.8 mm, and the binder consists of collodion.
- a thin layer of binder is interposed between two layers of grains of black powder.
- the ignition system tube is advantageously made of a material such as cardboard loaded with nitrocellulose.
- the ignition system is obtained by avoiding any compression of the powder, which in turn provides ease of production and manufacturing cost significantly lower than those of previous embodiments.
- Another advantage of the invention lies in the ease of adjusting the load thickness ignition.
- the ignition system 1 illustrated on the Figures 1 and 2 comprises a tube 2 whose wall interior is lined with an ignition charge consisting of several layers 3 of grains of powder black using a binder 4.
- the most interior delimits a central channel 5 to allow the passage of an ignition flame intended to ensure rapid initiation of the ignition charge which transmits then this flame to the propellant charge.
- Tube 2 is made of a material combustible, such as cardboard loaded with nitrocellulose to get complete combustion.
- the binder 4 is for example constituted by collodion (mixture of nitrocellulose and acetone) which is used in thin layers. Concretely, we manage to obtain a regular distribution of the grains of black powder as is clear from the figure 1.
- Tube 2 is mounted on a means allowing it to rotate at a moderate speed, around 100 rpm, the tube being supported at at least one of its ends or on part of its outer wall.
- the inner wall of tube 2 is coated with a thin layer collodion using a volumetric dosing gun, whose flow rate can be easily adjusted, this pistol being animated by a translational movement inside of tube 2.
- a feed chute is then introduced in the tube 2 to distribute a first layer 3 of grains of black powder, said grains being bonded at once.
- We then apply successively layers of binder and grains of black powder up obtain an ignition charge having a thickness determined. Finally, the whole is dried.
- the cardboard tube 2 fuel is wound around a propeller, which allows when igniting the black powder a cut out of the tube following this propeller thus improving the distribution of instant ignition of the propellant charge.
- the ignition system previously described is especially intended to equip a container fuel 6 such as that shown in FIG. 3.
- This container 6 consists for example of a case tubular 7 made of a combustible material, as for example a carton loaded with nitrocellulose.
- Case 7 is closed to both of them ends by a cover 8 also made in a combustible material.
- Each cover 8 is made up by a bottom wall 8 of annular shape and bordered externally and internally by two walls lateral which extend on the same side of the wall of bottom 8 to form two edges respectively circular external 9 and internal 10. These two edges 9 and 10 allow a tight fit between the case 7 and the tube 5 of the ignition system 1, this assembly possibly be completed with a bonding operation.
- the interior volume 11 of the container 6 is filled with a propellant charge which may occur in loose or in bundles.
- Such an ignition system can also be used to make ignition tubes for ammunition tanks or ignition means of shared ammunition in several burdens.
