Definitions

  • connection modules with removable contacts and in particular (although not exclusively) those which can be inserted side by side in a module-holder plate to constitute a connection block.
  • connection block can easily be designed to incorporate modules giving the contacts a variable distribution pitch from one module to another. It is also possible to mount a number of modules lower than the maximum admissible number.
  • the invention aims to provide a pluggable electrical connection module that better meets those previously known to the requirements of practice, in particular in that it allows a vigorous locking of the contacts as well as an easy positioning and removal of the contacts, while having a relatively simple constitution.
  • the invention proposes in particular a module according to claim 1.
  • the module can include at least some of the characteristics defined by claims 2 to 9.
  • the module can have characteristics among those defined in claims 11 to 17, which are those other embodiments.
  • connection block incorporating modules of the type defined above.
  • connection block 10 shown in Figures 1 to 6 is intended to receive female electrical contacts 12 and to plug into a complementary connection block equipped with male contacts, not shown.
  • a block 10 can in particular be used to equip motor vehicles.
  • the complementary block having male contacts can have a similar constitution.
  • the block 10 comprises a plate 14 intended to receive modules 16.
  • its central part is in the form of a frame, having longitudinal members 18 delimiting a central corridor. Lateral ears 19 of the plate make it possible to fix it.
  • Each module 16 consists of a housing 20 and a plate 22 for retaining the contacts of the module. It is intended to be locked on the side members in a position adjacent to another module or to other modules. The insertion of the module into the window of the plate when it is locked is defined by stop means provided on the housing and intended to come into contact with the side members.
  • the elastic locking means fix the module to the side members. They comprise, on each case, two external retention arms 24, in one piece with the rest of the case, intended to frame the side members, and elastic tabs 26 of internal retention, also in one piece with the rest of the housing.
  • the external retention arms 26 are each terminated by a hooking notch 28 intended to snap onto an external shoulder 30 of the respective side members.
  • This shoulder 30 extends over the entire length of the spar.
  • the arm 24 could be long enough for its catch notch to snap onto the edge of the spar, but this arrangement would constitute a projection which may limit the approach of the block and of a complementary block during plugging.
  • the presence of the external shoulders 30 makes it possible to have arms 24 which do not exceed the side members.
  • the stop means of each box consist of the connection of the external retaining arms to the main part of the box.
  • the internal elastic tabs 26 are designed to snap onto an internal shoulder of the respective side members.
  • passages 34 for electrical contacts which are female contacts in the particular case shown in FIG. 5.
  • Each plate 22 is designed to receive electrical contacts and retain them when it is fully engaged in the respective housing.
  • the plate is designed to lock elastically on the plate, in a position determined relative to the respective housing.
  • the plate 22 ( Figures 2 and 4) has a bottom pierced with passages for the contacts, and lateral hooking arms 38. The bottom is extended by elastic catches 36 for retaining the contacts. The spacing of the latches of the same passage is prohibited by the wall of the respective passage 34 of the housing when the plate is fully inserted into the housing. This method of retaining contacts will not be described further, because it is well known. Reference may in particular be made to document EP-A-0 576 345 on this subject.
  • the plate hooking means intended to immobilize it on the plate, comprise, in the embodiment of Figures 1 to 6, the lateral arms 38, each provided for this purpose with a terminal hooking notch. These notches can be provided to snap onto the same shoulder 32 as that used for the elastic tabs 26. As shown in particular in FIG. 2, two tabs 26 can be provided on each side of each housing, so as to leave free passage for the arm 38 which is inserted between them.
  • the plate 22 can be retained in a pre-locking position leaving the latches 36 free, so that the contacts can then be put in place and removed.
  • the plate and the housing carry means for temporarily retaining the plate in a retracted position.
  • these means are constituted by provisional retaining notches 40 constituting the external projections of each plate 22, intended to each engage in a window 42 of elongated shape of a partition extending laterally one of the sides of the housing.
  • a crosspiece 44 Figure 4 fixing the provisional retaining position of the plate.
  • the plate, the housing and the plates generally consist of a single piece of molded plastic, possibly reinforced by fillers.
  • the shape of these pieces is simple enough that the molds of manufacturing are feasible at a moderate price.
  • each plate is locked in the position where it prohibits the establishment or removal of the contacts only when its attachment means are fixed to the plate 14.
  • the plate 22 it is preferable for the plate 22 to be locked on the housing 20, so that each module containing contacts can be handled without risk of the contacts escaping.
  • FIGS. 7 to 10 one of the embodiments shown in FIGS. 7 to 10 can be adopted, where the members corresponding to those already shown in FIGS. 1 to 6 are designated by the same reference number.
  • the plate 22 is then deprived of lateral arms 38 for hooking onto the plate.
  • the housing 20 is provided with elastic pawls 46 which, when the plate is fully pressed into the housing, come to hang on the rear edge of the plate, as shown in the left part of FIG. 9.
  • These pawls can be guided, during their introduction, by corridors formed in lateral bulges 48 of the plates.
  • the wall of the corridors has an inclined zone 50 which gradually bends the pawl as it is introduced.
  • the corridor wall has a shoulder 52 whose location is such that when the pawl 46 is in abutment against the shoulder 52, without being prestressed, the plate 22 and the housing 20 are in the pre-locking position allowing insertion and removal of the contacts.
  • the exact pre-locking position can be fixed by comparable means, in their structure or their function, to the notch 40 and to the cross member 44 of FIG. 4.
  • a block can also be provided to receive male contacts. Its constitution then differs from that which has been described by the arrangement of the guide members provided in the ears of the plate.
  • the module also consists of a housing 120 and a plate 122 for retaining contacts 112 (FIGS. 13A to 13D, 14 and 15).
  • the housing 120 is designed to be locked on the side members of a plate 114 in a position adjacent to another module.
  • the elastic locking means of the housing on the side members comprise, on each housing, two external retention arms 124, in one piece with the rest of the housing, intended to frame the side members of the plate 114.
  • These external retention arms 124 each terminate in a hooking notch 128 intended to snap onto an external shoulder 130 of a respective side member.
  • These means also include internal arms 126 separated from the main part of the housing, intended to receive the contacts 112.
  • the housing 120 In the housing 120 are formed parallel passages 134 for receiving the female electrical contacts 112.
  • the plate 122 is provided for receiving the electrical contacts and for energetically retaining them.
  • the plate 122 has a bottom pierced with passages for the contacts and constituting a support shoulder of a first flange 150 of the respective contact.
  • the bottom is extended by elastic lugs 136 for retaining the contacts.
  • Each latch 136 has, from its root, an elastic part, then a bent portion 137 intended to rest on a second flange 152 of a contact ( Figures 13c and 13D).
  • the distance between the shoulder and the bent portion 137 is very slightly greater than the distance between the facing faces of the flanges 150 and 152.
  • the bent portion has a sufficient height so that it rests on the housing 120 when the plate is locked on The box.
  • Each latch 136 is extended by a finger 154 with a curved end.
  • the finger When the finger is in the free state (FIG. 13A), it has a shape such that it abuts against a terminal boss 156 of the housing if the plate is pressed. But the curvature of the end is such that the boss flexes the pawl outwards under the action of the driving force and allows the pawl to come into the position shown in FIG. 13D.
  • the plate locking means comprise lateral elastic arms 138 in one piece with the retaining plate, extending from the rear of the plate, framing the retaining plate and projecting downward from the catches. These lateral arms are provided with terminal lugs intended to engage in holes 158 of the internal arms of the housing. The arms may have a bulged and striated portion 160 allowing them to be better grasped. Between the body of the housing and each arm is provided a sufficient gap to allow the pins to be released by bending the arms. By bringing them together by hand, the plate can be engaged first to the intermediate position shown in FIG. 12, then to the locking position where the pins engage elastically in the holes 158.
  • the contacts can be put in place regardless of the position of the plate relative to the housing, even when the plate is locked on the housing. However, the contacts can only be removed from the plate without manual intervention on the latches when the plate is in the position shown in Figure 13C.
  • the plate and the housing carry provisional retaining means. In the case illustrated in Figures 11 and 12, these means are constituted by notches 140 constituting external projections of the housing and each engaging in a window 142 of elongated shape of a partition laterally extending one of the sides of the plate. The position of the plate can be freely adjusted between the positions shown in Figures 11 and 12.
  • Figures 13A and 13B show that the contacts 112 can be inserted when the plate is in the retracted position.
  • Figure 14 shows that the contacts can also be inserted, by pushing the tabs 136, while the plate 122 is locked on the housing 120.
  • the contacts can only be removed when the plate is in the position shown in the figure 13C, where its latches are repelled by the bosses 156. They can no longer be when the plate is locked on the housing (Figure 3D).
  • the housing 120 includes lateral stops 162 delimiting cavities in which the ends of the fingers 154 engage when the plate is locked on the housing. The stops prevent bending of the fingers and the latches and therefore the introduction of the contacts.
  • FIG. 16 shows an alternative embodiment of the housing 120 in which an intermediate position of the plate, where insertion and extraction are authorized, is fixed by notches 164 of the internal arms 126. If the plate is pushed in without bringing the arm 138, the plate advances to the position of FIG. 12 where it is held forward by the support of the lugs, rearward by the notches 140. To fully depress the plate, it is first necessary release the notches by bringing the lateral elastic arms 138 together, then push the plate until the pins are opposite the holes 158.
