Definitions
- the invention relates to a spark-ignition internal combustion engine which uses a fuel such as e.g. Petrol used, unlike other forms of internal combustion engines such as Diesel engines. More specifically, the invention relates to the arrangement of a fuel injector in relation to an intake port leading to a cylinder, with the aim of minimizing or possibly completely reducing the wetting of wall areas where the intake port approaches the intake of the cylinder to avoid.
- a fuel such as e.g. Petrol used
- a common construction of a receptacle for an electrically operated gasoline injector that injects the gasoline into an intake port leading to a cylinder inlet has a counter chamber that is immediately adjacent to the interface of the receptacle with the intake port.
- an O-ring seal is provided near the injector.
- Certain restrictions or considerations such as 1) the requirement for a sufficiently solid wall structure at the point where the receptacle intersects the intake duct, 2) space restrictions, which are predetermined by the hood of a motor vehicle, 3) the size and shape of an intake duct and / or 4) the particular injector used typically determine the placement of an injector receptacle in relation to its associated inlet port. In the constructions resulting therefrom, therefore, the tip of the injector was placed in the counter chamber, and the injector was designed to be the injects fuel toward a target area, typically an intake valve.
- Such fuel delivery may take a variety of forms, such as a curved flow, ie, a flow that is not parallel to the axis of the injector, or a straight flow, ie, a flow that is coaxial with the common axis of the injector and its receptacle.
- Various embodiments are shown in U.S. Patents 5,085,369, 5,156,130 and 5,201,806.
- the present invention relates to a novel design and arrangement of a gasoline injector that meets limitations and considerations such as those mentioned above and yet reduces or eliminates the recirculation problem mentioned above.
- a spark-ignited internal combustion engine 10 has a valve-controlled inlet 12, with which the downstream end of an inlet channel 14 is connected in a sealed manner.
- the inlet duct 14 conveys intake air to a cylinder of the internal combustion engine when the inlet 12 is open.
- the internal combustion engine 10 includes an electric injector 16 which delivers the fuel in the form of gasoline Intake port 14 injects so that it is entrained by the intake air to create a combustible charge for the cylinder. After a charge is delivered to the cylinder and the inlet 12 is closed, the charge is ignited by a spark plug (not shown) to release energy to operate the engine in a conventional manner.
- the injector 16 corresponds to those described in a number of applicant's patents, e.g. No. 5,201,806, with the difference that the length of the valve body extends axially beyond the location of an O-ring seal surrounding the valve body, so that the injection point is located within the inlet channel 14.
- the injector 16 is arranged coaxially in a receptacle 20 which intersects the inlet channel 14 at an acute angle to a portion of the channel length at which the receptacle intersects the inlet channel.
- the receptacle 20 has a counter chamber 22 which is directly adjacent to the interface of the receptacle and the inlet channel 14.
- the O-ring seal 18 seals a circumference of the valve body of the injector from the receptacle 20 at a location that leaves at least a portion of the counter chamber 20 unsealed from the inlet channel 14.
- the injector 16 has, as part of its valve body, a tip or nozzle 24 from which fuel is injected into the inlet duct 14 to be entrained by the air flowing through the inlet duct in a direction which faces the inlet 12 and at the same Embodiment of the invention is not parallel to the longitudinal axis of the receptacle 20 and the injection device 16.
- the nozzle of the injection device has one or more nozzle openings 26, at which the injected fuel leaves the injection device, and the nozzle opening or Nozzle openings 26 are arranged beyond the counter chamber 22 in such a way that they lie or lie within the inlet channel 14. The fuel is therefore injected from a location that is not within the counter chamber 22.
- the nozzle opening or openings 26 is or are provided in a disk 28 which is arranged transversely within the valve body in such a way that it leaves the valve body with an edge 30 which is arranged immediately beyond the disk 28 such that the entire edge is beyond the counter chamber 22 is located and thus lies within the inlet channel 14.
- the nozzle opening lies essentially on the axis of the injection device 16.
- the arrangement of the nozzle opening or nozzle openings described allows an improvement in both a moving and a non-moving air flow to be achieved.
- the tip or nozzle helps to shear off the liquid particles from the tip (nozzle).
- the disadvantageous effect of a return zone which is often found in the counter chamber when the nozzle is in the counter chamber and which contributes to wetting the walls, is avoided by pulling the nozzle forward in the manner described.
- the injection point can also be arranged in a different way within the inlet duct, for example in that the distance between the nozzle and the O - Leave the ring the same as for a nozzle that is not extended and then form the holder so that the injector is moved more inwards.

Abstract
