- the compartment walls 32, 34, 36 extent past ends 38 of the IDC contact portions 18 which provides, among other things, protection thereof against damage during handling and assembly.
- a single wire seal 64 ( Figure 5) is first inserted into the seal receiving cavity 54 of the cover member 8, the conducting wire 4 is then inserted through a wire receiving cavity 66 of the seal 64 and into the wire receiving cavity 48 until it abuts an end wall 68 of the cover 8.
- the single wire seal 64 has sealing ribs on its outer and inner surfaces that are resiliently biased against the seal receiving cavity 54 and the wire 4 such that the wire is sealed with respect to the cover member 8 except for the mating face 52.
- the cover member 8 can than be pressed into the compartments 28 whereby the IDC contacts 24 are inserted into the receiving slots 50 such that the wire 4 is forced into the IDC slots 26 that cut through the insulation and make electrical contact with conducting strands of the wires 4.
- the exterior portion of the wire 4 adjacent the seal 64 is inserted into the V-shaped slot 42 whereby the wire 4 is squeezed between opposing edges 70, 72 thereof, the tapered profile 44 creating acute angled edges 70, 72 for effectively digging into the wire 4 in order to act as a retention means.
- the tapered profile 44 is such that the smallest width between edges 70, 72 is adjacent the inner side of the compartment 28 so as to effectively retain the wire from an external pulling force therealong.
- the sealing surface 60 thereof abuts the sealing floor 14 whereby the cover member 8 can then be further inserted by resiliently biasing the sealing surface 60 thereagainst until the projections 58 of the cover engage in the windows 40 of the compartments 28.
- the cover member 8 is thus securely latched to the compartments 28 and resiliently biased against the sealing floor 14, the IDC connection between wire 4 and contact portion 18 thus being completely sealed off from the exterior.
- the sealing means 14 may not be moulded over the whole floor of the compartment but only at a position adjacent the sealing surface 60 of the cover, or the sealing means 14 could be provided as a loose piece or even moulded to the sealing surface 60 of the cover member 8.
- the connector 2 may also not be a branch connector having a common interconnecting portion 16, but may have separate terminals each having exterior contact portions (20), the exterior contact portions 20 could be of any form known in the prior art.
- the branch connection is a two position branch connector but of course if need be, a large plurality of IDC contacting portions 18 can be provided by simply extending the interconnecting portion 16 and moulding more compartments thereto. It could even be imagined to provide sealing means along the inner surfaces of the compartment walls 32, 34, 36 surrounding the IDC contact portions 18.
- the base member 6 of the connector can be assembled to a structure, for example the body work of an automobile, and the conducting wires 4 can be very rapidly and simply electrically connected thereto at a later assembly stage.
- the provision of a reliable sealed connector without requiring the use of sealing gels or greases whereby insulation displacement technology is used.
- the wire 4 can be assembled to the cover member 8 and provisionally held thereto during preparation of the harness in an automated process at the harness making location, the seal 64 provisionally holding the wire to the cover member 8.
- the wire 4 can then be electrically connected to a branch connector, for example, in a very simple manner by merely pushing the cover member 8 into the compartments 28.
- the cost effective and simple sealed IDC branch connector with stamped and formed terminals 18, 16 that can comprise a large plurality of terminals as desired.

Claims (19)
- Connecteur électrique à déplacement d'isolation (2), comprenanta) un élément de base (6) comportant des contacts à déplacement d'isolation (IDC) (18), etb) un élément de couverture (8), comportant un moyen de montage de fils (48) pour y monter un fil électrique (4);c) l'élément de couverture (8) pouvant être fixé à l'élément de base (6), de sorte à établir une connexion électrique entre les fils (4) et les contacts IDC; etd) un moyen d'étanchéité (64), agencé entre la couverture (8), la base et le fil (4);e) ledit moyen d'étanchéité comprend un moyen d'étanchéité discret pour un seul fil (64), agencé entre la couverture (8) et le fil (4);f) l'élément de couverture (8) comporte une surface d'étanchéité externe continue (60);g) ledit moyen d'étanchéité comprend un moyen d'étanchéité élastomère de la couverture (14), agencé entre les surfaces d'étanchéité externes continues de l'élément de base (6) et l'élément de couverture (8); eth) le moyen d'étanchéité élastomère de la couverture (14) est constitué par une couche de matériau élastomère.
- Connecteur électrique selon la revendication 1, caractérisé en ce que le moyen d'étanchéité de la couverture (14) est moulé par insertion sur l'élément de base (6).
- Connecteur électrique selon les revendications 1 ou 2, caractérisé en ce que les contacts IDC (18) sont moulés par insertion avec l'élément de base (6).
- Connecteur selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que l'élément de base (6) comporte plusieurs contacts à déplacement d'isolation (18), destinés à recevoir plusieurs fils (4).
- Connecteur selon la revendication 4, caractérisé en ce que les plusieurs contacts IDC (18) sont interconnectés électriquement par une partie de base d'interconnexion (16).
- Connecteur selon les revendications 4 ou 5, caractérisé en ce que les contacts IDC (18) sont agencés de façon parallèle et juxtaposée.
- Connecteur selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce qu'il y a un élément de couverture (8) pour chaque fil (4).
- Connecteur selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que les contacts IDC (18) sont formés intégralement avec une partie de contact externe (20) en vue de la connexion électrique des contacts IDC (18) à un conducteur externe autre que les fils (4).
- Connecteur selon la revendication 8, caractérisé en ce que la partie de contact externe (20) sert aussi à monter fermement l'élément de base (6) sur une structure par l'intermédiaire du moyen de montage (22) de la partie de contact (20).
- Connecteur selon les revendications 8 ou 9, caractérisé en ce que les contacts IDC (18), interconnectant la partie de base (16) et la partie de contact externe (20), sont formés à partir d'une pièce de tôle intégrale estampée et formée.
- Connecteur selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que l'élément de base (6) comprend un boítier isolant (12), comportant des compartiments (28), entourant les contacts IDC (18), l'élément de couverture (8) pouvant ainsi être reçu dans le compartiment (28) et y être fixé fermement.
- Connecteur selon la revendication 11, caractérisé en ce qu'il y a un compartiment séparé (28) pour chaque fil (4) et la partie de contact IDC correspondante (18).
- Connecteur selon les revendications 11 ou 12, caractérisé en ce que le compartiment (28) comprend des parois (32, 34, 36), s'étendant à partir d'une paroi de base (30), au-dessous des contacts IDC verticaux (18), dans une direction parallèle aux contacts et le long d'une extrémité de réception du fil correspondante (38).
- Connecteur selon l'une quelconque des revendications 11 à 13, caractérisé en ce que le compartiment (28) comprend une paroi (36), pratiquement transversale à la direction du fil (4) et parallèle aux contacts IDC (18), la paroi (36) comprenant une fente en V (42), destinée à recevoir le fil (4) au cours du montage de l'élément de couverture (8) sur l'élément de base (6), l'espacement entre les bords (70, 72) de la fente en V (42) étant tel que lorsque l'élément de couverture (8) est fermement fixé à l'élément de base (6), le fil (4) est fermement serré entre eux.
- Connecteur selon la revendication 14, caractérisé en ce que les bords (70, 72) de la fente en V (42) ont un profil effilé (44), transversalement par rapport à celle-ci, la distance minimale entre les bords opposés (70, 72) étant ainsi adjacente à l'élément de couverture (8).
- Connecteur selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que l'élément de couverture (8) comprend un boítier isolant (46), comportant une cavité de réception du fil (46), alignée avec celui-ci et contiguë à celui-ci, les fentes de réception IDC (50) intersectant transversalement la cavité de réception du fil (46).
- Connecteur selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que le moyen d'étanchéité du fil (64) comprend un joint de forme cylindrique pour un seul fil (64) composé d'un matériau élastomère.
- Connecteur selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes, caractérisé en ce que la surface d'étanchéité externe continue (60) est agencée sur un côté de réception des contacts IDC (52) de l'élément de coùverture (8), l'ensemble de la surface d'étanchéité pouvant être pressée contre le moyen d'étanchéité de la couverture (14) sur l'élément de base (6), de sorte que lorsque la couverture est retenue sur l'élément de base par un moyen de retenue (40, 58), le moyen d'étanchéité élastomère (14) est comprimé élastiquement contre la surface d'étanchéité de la couverture (60).
- Connecteur selon la revendication 18, caractérisé en ce que la surface d'étanchéité (60) est plane.
