Description

The invention relates to drums designed so as to reduce the volume of the remains of transported products, and more particularly in the case of liquid or viscous products.

In the industrial container market, the elimination of residues responds less to economic concerns than to an awareness of the harmful effects of these residues on the environment and on the recovery cycle of the containers themselves.

Whatever the type of container used, one rarely obtains a "total emptying" due in particular to the viscosity of the products.

Application BE-A-9100562 describes a double-cask drum in which a flexible pocket lines the inside of the metal wall, which allows a radical elimination of the residues which are eliminated with the pocket after use.

Another known solution is to promote the flow of the remainders of liquid products by inverting the barrels and by channeling the remaining fluid towards the bungs.

To reach their full effectiveness, these developed solutions require a certain collaboration on the part of the personnel handling the drums. These solutions often require, in fact, additional handling (overturning of the barrels, handling of the bags, etc.) and risk being sometimes poorly applied, or else they involve more mechanization in the handling.

We sought a method applied to pump-out, giving the operator no additional work, and involving no additional handling, which effectively reduces the quantity of products remaining at the bottom of the barrels after use.

Document DE-U-8628268 describes a barrel model in which radial grooves formed in the bottom (the central part of which is in a bowl) favor the flow of residuals of liquid or viscous products towards a circular channel. The path followed by the remains is relatively complex and leaves many blind spots where these remains remain to be stagnated.

Document US-4005813 describes a reconditioning method for metallic beer barrels. The bottom of these reconditioned barrels is curved inward and is connected, without any continuity, to the side wall, forming an annular bowl. When racking, a valve is attached to the center of the lid. This valve is connected to a curved tube which is engaged in the annular bowl, so as to allow the barrel to be completely emptied by pressurization. However, as the random arrangement of the tubing shows, a rigorous emptying of the keg is not required, as beer is not a dangerous product at moderate dose.

It should be noted that the quantity of liquid that remains in a conventional 200-liter barrel, after emptying it, can be estimated at around 2000 to 2500 ml!

With a barrel provided with a bottom according to the invention, arranged vertically and emptied by a pump, this residual quantity is reduced to approximately 50 ml, which can be considered as a very satisfactory result.

An object of the invention is to achieve such a result without forcing the operator to additional manipulations.

Another object of the invention is not to make the manufacture of the barrels more complex, and therefore to have practically no effect on the cost price.

Another aim is to not have to use any special equipment, except standard, to use these barrels.

The subject of the invention is a metal barrel which has a central axis, a ferrule disposed along this axis, a bottom and a cover provided with bungs fixed to this ferrule; the bottom of the barrel forms a figure of revolution; the central part of this bottom has the shape of a domed domed towards the inside of the barrel; the periphery of this dome is connected to the internal periphery of a circular channel; the outer edge of this channel is connected to the base of an inverted truncated cone which rises flaring from the channel to the wall of the shell; the periphery of this bottom folds into a cylindrical crown secured to the ferrule.

This circular channel extending at the same distance from the axis of the barrel as the bungs fixed on the cover.

According to an advantageous embodiment, the bottom of the channel is flat, its width corresponding substantially to the diameter of a pump nozzle suitable for emptying the barrel.

According to another advantageous embodiment, this channel has a concave section, the cellar side facing the inside of the barrel.

In this embodiment, a flat primer capable of supporting the end of the endpiece is advantageously provided between the inverted truncated cone and the channel.

The bottom is preferably fixed to the shell by crimping.

Advantageously, an inner rib is formed on the ferrule at the height of its junction with the crown, so as to reduce the quantity of liquid or viscous product capable of being retained between the wall of the ferrule and the bottom.

Another advantage of the invention is that the barrel is emptied normally in a vertical position, without it being necessary to turn it over after use to arrive to complete emptying, thus achieving one of the objectives which the invention has imposed itself.

Another advantage is that the barrel according to the invention is practically not transformed as regards its external dimensions nor its performance.

In addition, the bottom of the barrel according to the invention is more rigid than a barrel bottom according to the prior art.

  • la Fig. 1 est une vue en coupe axiale avec interruption d'un fût suivant l'invention;
Other features and advantages of the invention will emerge from the description below of particular embodiments, reference being made to the appended drawings, in which:
  • Fig. 1 is an axial section view with interruption of a barrel according to the invention;
  • Figs. 2 and 3 are interrupted perspective views of pump tips adapted to the invention, and
  • Fig. 4 is an axial sectional view of the lower part of a barrel according to the invention, according to another embodiment.

The bottom 1 of the barrel according to the invention is connected to the ferrule 2 forming the side wall of the barrel by a crimping 3. This bottom has on the whole a form of revolution centered on the axis 4 of the barrel.

The central part of the bottom has the shape of a dome 5 curved towards the inside of the barrel.

The periphery of this dome 5 is connected to the inner edge 6 of a flat-bottom channel 7. The outer edge 8 of this channel 7 is connected to the base of an inverted truncated cone 9 disposed at the periphery and whose slope goes back to the shell 2.

At the point of contact between the inverted cone 9 and the shell 2, the base 1 is folded down: it forms a crown concentric with the shell. The ends of the crown 10 and of the ferrule 2 are wound on themselves to form the crimping 3 of the base of the barrel.

The sides of the dome 5, the channel 7 and the trunk of inverted cone determining a circular concavity in the bottom of the barrel. The channel forming the bottom of this concavity is located at the same distance from the axis 4 of the barrel as a standard plug 11 mounted on the cover 12, so that the end piece 13 of a pump 14 threaded vertically into the plug 11 of the cover 12 is therefore automatically aligned on the circular channel and this, whatever was, during the assembly of the barrel, the position of the cover 12 relative to that of the bottom 1.

The remainders of the product initially contained in the barrel naturally tend to descend towards the bottom of the channel. As long as the body of the barrel is tilted very slightly (of the order of 5 °) the end piece 13 is automatically placed in the most favorable position so that we can suck up to the final fractions of the content.

The slopes of the different walls are adjusted so as to avoid flow interruptions due to the respective wetting properties of liquids and surfaces.

It is not that the force of the pump causes an obstruction of the nozzle by suction effect. This is why, for a channel whose bottom consists of a flat ring 7 as in FIG. 1, it may be necessary to adapt the end of the endpiece, either by lateral notches 15, as shown in FIG. 2, either by indentations 16 as shown in FIG. 3. In known manner, the end piece 13 is provided at its lower part with a non-return valve retaining the column of liquid or viscous product under the pump 14.

The diameter of the nozzle 13 is substantially equal to the width of the channel 7 with a flat bottom.

Fig. 4 shows another embodiment of the barrel according to the invention.

The bottom of the channel 7 is no longer flattened as in FIG. 1, it offers a concave section 17.

The inverted truncated cone 9 shows, at its junction with the channel 17, a flattening primer 18 making it possible to support the end of the end piece 13.

The diameter of the end piece 13 is wider than the channel 17, which always leaves a certain distance between the end of the end piece and the bottom of the channel. It is therefore not possible to plug the nozzle by suction effect, and it is possible with this version to use standard-shaped nozzles.

An inner rib 20 is formed during the manufacture of the shell of the barrel according to the invention, at the level of the junction between the shell 2 and the bottom 1; the line of contact between these two parts is in this way less reentrant. This avoids the formation of a recess in which could be housed liquid or viscous products transported, which it would be difficult to dislodge afterwards, by effect of the surface tension; the quantities thus captured form a significant part in the account of product residues that the barrel according to the invention seeks precisely to reduce.
