Definitions

  • the invention relates to a method for transferring a decoration onto a substrate, the decoration being arranged as a decorative layer known per se from hot stamping foils on a carrier film and being released from it under the action of heat and / or pressure and also being fixed to the substrate by means of an adhesive layer .
  • the invention furthermore relates to the use of a film, consisting of a carrier web and a layer which can be detached therefrom, in the aforementioned method.
  • a method of the type mentioned at the outset is usually carried out using so-called hot stamping foils.
  • a hot stamping foil is constructed in such a way that a decorative layer, which can comprise several layers, is applied to a carrier film. The side of the decorative layer facing away from the carrier film then also carries an adhesive layer. To transfer the decoration, the hot stamping foil with the adhesive layer is then placed on a substrate and exposed to at least pressure, but generally pressure and heat. In this case, the adhesive layer creates a connection between the one to be decorated Surface of the substrate and the decorative layer produced. After the decorative layer has been fixed on the substrate, the carrier film is then removed from the decorative layer remaining on the substrate, the removal of the decorative layer possibly being facilitated by a separating layer, generally a wax layer.
  • users of hot stamping foils can provide the decorative layer with a special pattern, such as a hologram, even if a corresponding semi-product is delivered to them.
  • a special pattern such as a hologram
  • the adhesive layer would have to be applied with the Security features provided, semi-finished stamping foils are sent back to the manufacturer, which is understandably undesirable because of the associated risk.
  • Another possibility would be to provide the tool or device required for the application of the safety features to the hot stamping foil manufacturer. However, this too is generally undesirable because of the security risks involved.
  • a method for transferring an image from an initial carrier to a new carrier which consists in pressing a sheet covered with an adhesive layer onto an ink layer on an original carrier, and then removing this sheet to leave the adhesive layer on the printing ink layer, an intermediate carrier is brought into contact with the adhesive layer thereon, which has a clear lacquer layer, an adhesive layer that can be easily removed from the lacquer layer, and a base carrier layer.
  • the original carrier is then removed and the intermediate carrier with the ink layer adhering to it is applied to a new carrier and the base carrier layer is removed from the intermediate carrier.
  • EP-A 0 375 609 represents the state of the art according to Art. 54 (3) (4) EPC.
  • a film adhesive is described there, according to which adhesive is applied, for example poured, onto a release surface, for example paper treated with silicone.
  • the invention is therefore based on the object of proposing a method and the use of a film suitable for this purpose, which make it possible to meet all the special requirements mentioned above, i.e. in particular to give a hot stamping foil user the opportunity to provide the foil with security features independently of the hot stamping foil manufacturer and to then reliably attach the decorative layer of the hot stamping foil thus supplemented to the object to be secured, for example a bank note or a credit card.
  • the basic idea of the invention is therefore to provide the user on the one hand with a film which consists of a carrier film and which has a decorative layer fixed thereon, usually via a separating layer, and on the other hand with a film which carries the adhesive layer on a carrier web.
  • the adhesive layer must first be applied either on the upper side of the decorative layer facing away from the carrier film or on the surface of the substrate to be decorated. After the carrier web has been detached, the decorative layer can then be fixed to the substrate in the usual way via the adhesive layer. With such a separation of the decorative layer on the one hand and the adhesive layer on the other hand, the user has a multitude of new, previously unknown possibilities.
  • the user has the option, after delivery of the partial embossing film comprising only the decorative layer, to change or supplement the decorative layer in their own production facilities, for example by means of an applied hologram, by a special vapor deposition, etc.
  • the processor can then the correspondingly modified decorative layer can be fixed on the substrate in the previously customary manner by means of the other partial embossing film, which essentially comprises the adhesive layer.
  • the processor is thus given a simple possibility of applying the adhesive layer without special facilities and safety measures, which, depending on what is more favorable for the processor, either by applying it to the decorative layer, for example in a roller mill, or by applying the adhesive layer to the substrate and then embossing the partial embossing film having the decorative layer.
  • the processor also has the option of using very special adhesives, for example.
  • the processor has the option of providing special patterns for the embossed or applied image, since the decorative layer then only adheres to the substrate in the areas where glue is present.
  • the adhesive layer can be applied to the carrier web in various ways, for example in a roller application or casting process. However, it is particularly expedient if the adhesive layer is applied in a printing process which is known in principle.
  • the decorative layer to be applied by means of the adhesive layer can be constructed correspondingly to decorative layers in known stamping foils.
  • it can consist of non-pigmented, transparent lacquer layers, pigmented lacquer layers and / or metal layers, for example aluminum, chromium, tin, zinc, copper, silver, gold, titanium.
  • the decorative layer can also comprise several layers, it also being possible to provide the decorative layer with a spatial pattern, either on its surface facing the carrier film or in an area between different layers of lacquer, especially for security applications an embodiment is favorable in which a reflective metal layer is present.
  • a film for use in the method according to the invention consists of a carrier web and an optionally multilayer adhesive layer which can be detached therefrom, the adhesive layer expediently having a thickness of 1 to 100 ⁇ m, preferably 1 to 10 ⁇ m.
  • the adhesives usually used in the manufacture of stamping foils can in principle be used for the adhesive layer, the adhesive layer preferably being formed by a solvent-based lacquer, an aqueous synthetic resin dispersion and / or a hot-melt adhesive.
  • Single or multi-component mixtures of the following binders are suitable for the individual adhesive layers: PVC, PVC copolymers, chlorinated polyolefins, polyesters, polyurethanes, polyvinyl acetates, vinyl acetate copolymers, polyacrylates, acrylate copolymers, polystyrenes, butadiene-styrene copolymers, polystyrene copolymers, colophonium resins, Shellac and polyamides.
  • the adhesive Since the adhesive is usually applied in a printing process, it may be advisable to improve the printing or flow behavior and to defoam the addition of paint auxiliaries known per se.
  • additives to fillers, pigments or dyes can also be added to the adhesive, pigments and dyes being added especially when the adhesive layer is visible after processing the film, be it that the film is applied to a transparent substrate , be it that the adhesive layer shines through the decorative layer.
  • the carrier web of the film having the adhesive layer can expediently be formed by a paper web or plastic film which, if necessary, at least on the side of the adhesive layer, facilitates a coating that facilitates detachment of the adhesive layer.
  • a paper web or plastic film which, if necessary, at least on the side of the adhesive layer, facilitates a coating that facilitates detachment of the adhesive layer.
  • silicone-coated paper for example. In any case, it must be ensured that the adhesive layer completely detaches from the carrier web during processing, because only in this case a clean transfer of the decorative layer is guaranteed.
  • the surface carrying the adhesive layer should be self-contained.
  • plastic films made of PET, PE or PP can be used here.
  • the film having the adhesive layer can be designed such that a metal layer is arranged on the carrier web next to the adhesive layer, the metal layer carrying an adhesive layer on one or both sides, depending on whether the decorative layer or that Substrate itself have adhesive properties or not. If the decorative layer or substrate sticks, the metal layer can adhere to the substrate or the decorative layer without the interposition of an adhesive layer.
  • A shows a layer sequence, designated overall by A, in a partial section, which consists of a carrier film 1, a separating layer 2, a first lacquer layer 3 and a second lacquer layer 4.
  • the carrier film is a carrier film which is conventional per se for stamping foils, for example a PET film with a thickness of approximately 19 ⁇ m.
  • the release layer 2 is also a layer known in principle from embossing foils, for example a wax layer of low thickness, which allows the decorative layer 5 formed by the two lacquer layers 3 and 4 to be easily detached, particularly when exposed to heat.
  • the lacquer layer 3 closer to the carrier film 1 forms the after the decorative layer 5 has been applied to a substrate free surface, which is why this lacquer layer 3 should have appropriate abrasion resistance.
  • the lacquer layer 3 must be at least translucent due to the presence of the further lacquer layer 4.
  • the lacquer layer 4 of the decorative layer 5, on the other hand, will usually be a pigmented and / or colored layer that is chemically structured so that the adhesive layer used to fix the decorative layer 5 on a substrate adheres well to it.
  • the separating surface 6 between the lacquer layers 3 and 4 of the decorative layer 5 is not essentially flat. Rather, this separating surface 6 is provided with a spatial pattern indicated by the corrugations 7, which is visible due to the transparency of the lacquer layer 3 after the decorative layer 5 has been applied to a substrate.
  • the spatial pattern 7 can be formed, for example, by a hologram etc.
  • the second lacquer layer 4 it would also be conceivable to provide a metallization in the region of the separating layer 6, in which case the adhesive layer would then have to be adjusted so that it adheres well to the metallization.
  • the metallization could also be arranged between two layers of paint 3, 4.
  • an adhesive layer film denoted overall by B, which consists of a carrier web 8 and the adhesive layer 9 used to fix the decorative layer 5 on the substrate.
  • the carrier web can be formed, for example, from coated paper, for example coated with silicone, but also from uncoated paper.
  • a release layer plastic film for example made of PET, PE, PP or a film made of suitable materials can also be used.
  • the adhesive layer 9 is selected in accordance with the respective field of application.
  • the thickness of the adhesive layer 9 also depends on the intended use and the adhesive used. It is between 1 and 100 microns, preferably between 1 and 10 microns. Solvent varnishes, aqueous dispersions or hot-melt adhesives can expediently be used as adhesives.
  • the application method used in each case for the adhesive on the carrier web 8 depends on the viscosity, the methods which are customary and known for the production of stamping foils being used, for example gravure printing, knife coating, casting, etc. Further details regarding the recipes for adhesive are mentioned below .
  • the adhesive layer 9 is first applied to the free surface of the decorative layer 5 facing away from the carrier film 1 in the manner outlined in FIG. 2a.
  • This application can take place in a process known per se from the processing of stamping foils under the action of heat and pressure.
  • the carrier web 8 is pulled off the adhesive layer 9.
  • a laminate consisting of the decorative layer film A and the adhesive layer 9 is then obtained, which laminate itself onto the substrate 10 Stamping foil processing can be applied in a known manner.
  • Stamping foil processing can be applied in a known manner.
  • the carrier film 1 with the release layer 2, the decorative layer 5 and the adhesive layer 9 is stamped onto the surface 11 of the substrate 10 to be decorated, this stamping being carried out under the action of heat and pressure.
  • the decorative layer 5 is fixed on the surface 11 of the substrate 10 by means of the adhesive layer 9.
  • the carrier film 1 can be detached from the decorative layer 5, so that the surface 11 of the substrate 10 decorated with the decorative layer 5 is obtained.
  • the adhesive layer 9 is first applied (FIG. 3a) to the surface 11 of the substrate 10 to be decorated. As soon as the adhesive layer 9 adheres to the surface 11, the carrier web 8 is then pulled off.
  • the above-mentioned adhesives are produced in a manner known per se and, depending on the viscosity, are also applied to the carrier web, e.g. an appropriately coated paper or a plastic film, applied. They are very well suited for fixing decorative layers, as are known per se from hot stamping foils, on the usually embossed substrates, e.g. Paper or plastic.
  • the processing method corresponds essentially to that known from hot stamping foils.
