Definitions
- the invention relates to a venetian blind construction and, more specifically, to such a construction installed inside the sealed space of a window unit with double glazed panel.
- the general object of the present invention is to provide a construction of a Venetian blind in which the slats are installed in a frame having two non-parallel sides.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a construction thus described, installed in a window unit with a double glazed panel.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a structure of the type described, which may have a circular, oval, trapezoidal or triangular shape.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a system as described above, having an actuation mechanism for the slats, which is completely enclosed in the sealed space of the window unit and which has an extended useful life.
- the construction of a venetian blind according to the invention comprises a frame having a straight side and an opposite side which is not parallel to the first side.
- the opposite side can be curved or straight but it will be inclined to the right side.
- a set of slats extend from the right side to the opposite side, each slat having first and second pivot rods at its opposite ends and coaxial around a first axis.
- the first pivot rods are journalled in the right side.
- a block for each slat in which the second pivot rod is journalled, is installed so as to be able to pivot in said opposite side around a second axis which is transverse to the first axis.
- the construction also includes actuation means installed in the right side to interconnect the slats so that they can be pivoted simultaneously between an open and closed position.
- the invention also preferably includes glass panels installed on the opposite faces of the frame and forming therewith a sealed space in which the slats and the actuating means are located.
- said actuating means comprise a gear pinion fixed to each first pivot rod and an actuating band installed in the right side of the frame for a guided movement back and forth, said band having a series of 'openings with an edge forming rack teeth meshing with said gear pinion; and a drive shaft carrying an eccentric post slidably inserted into a transverse slot in the band to move the band back and forth comes and when the drive shaft turns. Only the drive shaft projects from the right side of the frame and is securely journalled there.
- each side of the frame includes an outer frame member and an inner frame member, which are slidably interconnected.
- the inner frame side frame member which is parallel to the slats, forms an engaging stop by an adjacent slat in its open position to prevent rotation of the slat over 180 °.
- the inner frame member on the right side forms an elongated housing enclosing the actuating strip and forming trunnions for the first pivot rods of the slats.
- the inner frame member on the opposite side of the frame is U-shaped, defining a core and side tabs, the side tabs being substantially parallel to the glass panels and each forming guide tracks facing each other. side tab, a pair of plates being provided for each slat which plates are frictionally retained in the guide tracks of each leg, each block being pivoted on a pair of plates around said second axis.
- the construction of a venetian blind comprises a frame 1 in which are installed a plurality of slats 3 which can pivot and arranged so as to remain parallel and spaced and pivoted at both ends for movement between a closed and open position.
- the slats 3 In the open position, the slats 3 are generally transverse to the plane of the frame 1, and in the closed position, as shown in Figure 6, the slats 3 are generally parallel to the frame with their longitudinal edges partially overlapping.
- One side 5 of the frame is straight and encloses the actuation mechanism for pivoting the slats 3 from one end of the set of slats.
- An opposite side 7 of the frame is not parallel to the right side 5.
- This opposite side of the frame can be straight and inclined relative to the right side 5, as shown in FIG. 2, in the case where the entire frame forms a right triangle which could also be trapezoidal or other similar shapes.
- each slat comprises a pivot rod 9, which is coaxial with the longitudinal axis of the slat and which is installed so as to be able to freely pivot in an orifice of a block 11, which is itself pivoted to a side 7 or 7A of a frame about an axis which is transverse to the axis of the pivot rod 9, so as to constitute a universal pivot. More particularly, as shown in FIG.
- the block 11 has orifices at its two opposite ends receiving upright shafts 13 so that they can rotate, which are each fixed to a plate 15.
- Each plate 15 is inserted in a greenhouse in guide tracks 17, formed in the inner face of the two tabs 19 of an inner frame member 21, of U-shaped section.
- the pair of plates 15 of each successive slat form a small angle between them.
- the pair of plates 15 are all arranged parallel to one another. In all cases, the plates 15 are adjusted to the greenhouse according to the desired spacing, so as to keep the numerous slats parallel to each other.
- the frame 1 comprises at its periphery an outer frame member, shown at 23 in FIG. 5 and also in FIG. 7.
- This outer frame member has the shape of a rectangular cutting tube, forming a compartment to contain a granular desiccant 25.
- the outer frame member 23 is provided with side tabs 27 facing the ends of the central tube, the opposite faces of the ends of the tube and the tabs being knurled, as shown at 29, to receive and retain a sealant compound and adhesive, 31, such as silicone rubber, which serves to adhere to and retain glass panels 33 against the outer frame member 23 on all sides of the frame 1.
- the panels 33 can be solid or laminated. Therefore, a closed and sealed space is defined between the two glass panels and in which the slats 3 and the swivel installation of the slats and their actuating mechanism are located there and protected against dust and the like.
- Each outer frame member 23 has lateral guide tracks 35 on its inner face, in which ridges 37 of the inner frame member 21 are slidably adjusted in order to be able to retain them.
- This actuation mechanism includes a band actuator 45 installed in the inner frame member 43 for a back-and-forth movement around it, being guided by guide pads 47 fixed to the opposite faces of the inner and outer frame members 43 and 23 and pressed against the opposite sides of the actuating strip 45.
- the actuating strip 45 comprises a series of openings 49, of generally rectangular shape, at each slat 3 and forming along a longitudinal edge of the rack teeth 51, which mesh with a fixed gear pinion 53 at the outer end of a pivot rod 55, itself protruding from and fixed to the batten 3, the rod 55 being coaxial with the pivot rod 9 at the opposite end of the batten.
- the pivot rod 55 is journalled in an orifice formed in the wall of the internal frame member 43. Consequently, a reciprocating movement of the actuating strip 4 will pivot the slats simultaneously and by the same travel between an open and closed position.
- the actuating strip 45 comprises a transverse slot 57 into which an upright 59 is inserted, which is fixed eccentrically to a disc 61 (see FIG. 8).
- the disc 61 is fixed by a bolt 62 to a drive shaft 63 which, with the disc 61, is journalled in a sleeve with an external thread, 65, which has an enlarged head 67 pressing against the external face of the external frame member 23, with its threaded portion passing through said member 23.
- Washers 71 are interposed between the drive shaft 63 and the sleeve 64, and between the head 67 and the frame member 23, to completely seal the interior space between the glass panels.
- a worm gear 73 is attached to the outer portion of the drive shaft 63, which projects from the frame 23.
- a housing 75 surrounds the worm gear 73 and is attached to the frame member exterior 23 by screws 77 (see Figure 11) in any of a set of positions rotated at right angles to each other.
- the housing 75 is kept coaxial with respect to the drive shaft 63, since it has an upright 79, of cylindrical shape, inserted in a central orifice so as to be able to rotate there, this orifice being formed in the outer end of the drive shaft 63.
- a worm rod 81 extends transversely to the housing 75, being journalled therein, and its threaded portion meshes with the worm gear 73.
- the worm rod 81 can be oriented transversely to the frame side 5 , as shown in Figure 9, to be rotated by a retractable crank 83, or longitudinally on the frame side 5 as shown in Figure 11, in which case the worm rods 81 of several window units can be connected in series by flexible shafts 85, one end of the shaft being driven by an electric motor 87, so that the latter can actuate the slats of several window units simultaneously.
- flexible shafts 85 By means of flexible shafts 85, the slats of the window units arranged in different configurations can be driven by a single motor 87.
