Definitions
- the invention relates to a thermal ink ribbon, in particular thermocarbon ribbon, with a conventional carrier and a layer of a melting ink formed on one side of the carrier and an adhesive layer thereon, and a method which is particularly suitable for the production thereof.
- Thermal ribbons have been known for a long time. They have a melting color on a film-like carrier, for example made of paper, a plastic or the like, in particular in the form of a plastic and / or wax-bound colorant or carbon black layer.
- the melting ink is melted by means of a thermal print head and transferred to a recording paper or a printing paper.
- Thermal printers or thermal print heads that can be used for this process are e.g. B. from DE-ASen 2 062 494 and 2 406 613 and DE-OS 3 224 445 known.
- z. Example proceed as follows: On the thermal print head of the printer, a letter consisting of heated dots and to be printed on a paper sheet is formed.
- the thermal print head presses the thermal ribbon onto the paper to be written on.
- the heated letter of the thermal print head at a temperature of about 400 o C has the effect that the melting ink is melted at the heated point and transferred to the paper sheet in contact with it.
- the used part of the thermal ribbon is fed to a spool.
- the thermal ribbon can have different melting colors next to each other. With the combination of the basic colors blue, yellow and red, colored print images can be produced. Compared to the usual Color photography eliminates the disadvantageous development and fixation. Thermal printers can be operated at high writing speeds (a DIN A4 sheet can be printed in about 10 seconds) and without annoying background noises.
- thermal ribbons described above there are also those in which the heat symbol is not embossed by the action of a thermal print head, but by resistance heating of a specially designed film-like carrier. Resistance heating takes place in that the melting ink and / or its carrier contain electrically conductive materials.
- the melting ink which is the actual "functional layer” during the printing process, also contains the materials already described above.
- EMR Electro Thermal Ribbon
- a corresponding thermal transfer printing system is described, for example, in US Pat. No. 4,309,117.
- the font sharpness and the optical density of the font produced depend, among other things, on the adhesion of the melting ink to the paper. Their adhesion to the paper is proportional to the adhesive surface and the adhesive force. With rough paper, the adhesive surface is small because only the raised parts of the paper surface are wetted by the melted melting ink. In EP-A-0 137 532 and DE-A-3 507 097 this disadvantage is eliminated by a so-called filling layer formed on the layer of the melting ink. During the printing process, this filling layer, which consists of a low-viscosity material in the melted state, has the task of flowing into the valleys of the rough paper surface and thus increasing the adhesive surface.
- EP-A-0 137 741 relates to a thermal ink ribbon in which tackifying hydrocarbon resins are used in order to increase the adhesive strength of the melting ink and thus to improve the transfer properties of the thermal ink ribbon.
- the invention has for its object to develop the thermal ribbon described above so that it does not have the above-mentioned disadvantages of the known thermal ribbons and shows excellent suitability for writing on both rough and smooth paper.
- the adhesive layer contains a tackifying hydrocarbon resin embedded in a paraffin in finely divided form and the paraffin of the tack layer has a melting point of 60 to 95 ° C.
- the characteristic of the invention is accordingly the formation of an adhesive layer which essentially consists of a paraffin to which tackifying hydrocarbon resins are incorporated in finely divided form.
- hydrocarbon resins is a collective name for thermoplastic, low molecular weight (molecular wiped generally below 2000) polymers which have been used in the past, inter alia, for modifying adhesives or as tackifiers for chewing gum (terpene resins).
- Coumarone indene resins from coal tar distillates are among the oldest hydrocarbon resins.
- the petroleum resins are derived from petroleum cracking products and are either obtained from the C4 / C6 alkene fraction, the C8 / C10 aromatic fraction (indene, vinyltoluenes, stryol and homologs) or the dicyclopentadiene fraction.
- the terpene resins arise primarily from dipentene, pinene, limonene, etc.
- Recent developments make use of pure monomers, mainly styrene or alkyl styrenes and similar compounds, which are copolymerized.
- hydrocarbon resins also includes those with an aliphatic structure.
- the hydrocarbon resins can therefore also be aromatic, aliphatic, alicyclic and mixed hydrocarbons, as are used as modifiers for adhesives, in particular pressure-sensitive and hot-melt adhesives.
- hydrocarbon resins identified above are exemplary only. Consequently this should not be seen as a limitation. Rather, a large number of further hydrocarbon resins are known in the prior art which can be used successfully in the sense of the invention.
- paraffin is understood to mean a solid mixture of purified, saturated, aliphatic hydrocarbons which is colorless, odorless and tasteless, easily dissolves in ether and chloroform, and does not dissolve in water and 90% alcohol. It is a solid mass whose melting point is between 60 and 95 o C. Microfax, ceresin, petrolatum and Fischer-Tropsch waxes can be given as specific examples of paraffinic materials which come under the term "paraffin” chosen here.
- the adhesive layer contains the tackifying hydrocarbon resin in an amount of 10 to 45% by weight.
- the thickness of the adhesive layer can vary widely. It is preferably 0.2 to 10 micrometers, in particular 1 to 3 micrometers. The lower limit results from the coating technology requirements and, if technically possible, could still be fallen below. If the upper limit is exceeded, no further advantage is achieved. There is then even a disadvantage in the form of a greater production outlay and a higher energy requirement when printing. In principle, however, the layer thickness of the adhesive layer is not of essential importance for the effects sought with the invention.
- additives can be incorporated into the adhesive layer of the thermal ribbon according to the invention in order to achieve special additional effects.
- These can be colorants, other waxes, in particular ester waxes, which improve the writeability of overhead films, and inert fillers and the like.
- the adhesive layer is preferably formed on the melting ink of the thermal ink ribbon according to the invention in that the paraffinic material and the tackifying hydrocarbon resin containing melt is applied to the surface of the melting ink using customary application technologies, for example with a doctor blade.
- the temperature of the melt color should be at typically 100 to 130 o C. After application, the applied materials are only allowed to cool.
- the present invention the essence of which is the formation of a special adhesive layer, can be explained as follows:
- the adhesion of the melting ink to the paper is not improved during the printing process by increasing the adhesive area, but rather by increasing the adhesive force.
- thermal ribbons must have a shelf life of several years, even at a temperature above 50 o C.
- the use of a tackifying hydrocarbon resin is not possible without further ado, since the thermal ribbon ribbon can easily stick together.
- the tackifying hydrocarbon resin can be masked, so that it is not effective when stored at temperatures above 50 ° C. This masking is achieved by embedding the tackifying hydrocarbon resin in a paraffin matrix.
- Tackifying hydrocarbon resins of the type described above as are used, for example, in the production of hotmelt and pressure-sensitive adhesives, have a temperature-dependent solution equilibrium, dissolved in paraffin. This property makes them extremely suitable for the invention.
- the hydrocarbon resins are homogeneously dissolved in the paraffin. When cooling, the hydrocarbon resin precipitates in finely divided form before the solidification point is reached.
- the hydrocarbon resin precipitates out on cooling and is masked by its embedding in the paraffin matrix. It is only released during the printing process and can have the desired effect.
- this temperature-dependent solution balance of paraffin and hydrocarbon resin is maintained.
- a thermal ink ribbon was produced in which the melting ink contained 45% by weight of paraffin with a melting point of about 68 ° C., 40% by weight of ethylene vinyl acetate and 15% by weight of carbon black.
- the carrier consisted of a polyester.
- the thickness of the melting ink was about 5 micrometers.
- the adhesive layer had the following composition: 3.5 parts by weight of paraffin having a melting point of about 68 o C to 0.5 parts by weight Esterwachs and 1.0 parts by weight of hydrocarbon resin having a melting point of about 120 o C (61 KW the company VfT (Verticiansgesellschaft für Teerermaschinenisse mbH)).
- the mixture had a solidification point of about 63 ° C., while the cloud point of the melt appeared on cooling at about 97 ° C.
- the materials of the above-mentioned adhesive layer were melted and applied from the melt in a thickness of about 2 micrometers with a roller onto the layer of the melting ink. After cooling, a usable thermocarbon tape was created. It is particularly suitable for printing on rough paper with a Bekk smoothness of ⁇ 50.
- Example 1 The procedure of Example 1 was modified in that for forming the adhesive layer following formulation was used: 3.0 parts by weight of paraffin having a melting point of about 68 o C, 1.0 parts by weight of Esterwachses and 1.0 wt. Parts of a hydrocarbon resin with a melting point of 130 ° C. (A 120 from Hercules). The cloud point mentioned in Example 1 was reached at about 110 ° C.
