Definitions
- the invention relates to a device for feeding a fuel additive into the fuel tank of a motor vehicle, the additive being admixed to the fuel from a reservoir via a pump device.
- the object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and functionally reliable device of the generic type, with which a sufficiently precise admixture of the fuel additive can be carried out.
- a pressure source present in the motor vehicle in particular a vacuum source, can be used as the medium which drives the positive displacement pump.
- a control valve and the positive displacement pump with the corresponding connecting lines and two check valves are required.
- the control valve is actuated directly by the closure of the fuel tank in such a way that the fuel additive is automatically added each time the fuel tank is opened.
- the schematic drawing shows a device with a vacuum operated diaphragm pump and a two-way control valve.
- the device shown shows a reservoir (10) for the fuel additive to be supplied to the fuel (e.g. G 15).
- the storage container (10) can be provided, in a manner not shown, with a display device which visually or acoustically indicates whether additives have to be refilled in the storage container (10).
- the reservoir (10) is connected via a line (12) to a diaphragm pump (14) as a pump device.
- the diaphragm pump (14) is composed of a housing (16), an elastic diaphragm as a movable pump element (18) and a spring (20) that biases the diaphragm in one direction.
- the membrane (18) divides the housing (16) into two chambers (22, 24).
- the line (12) into which a check valve (26) is switched opens into the chamber (22).
- the check valve (26) is continuous in the direction of the chamber (22), but is blocked in the opposite direction to the storage container.
- a further line (28) opens into the chamber (22), into which a second, controllable check valve (30) is switched on.
- the check valve (30) forms, with a housing section (32) and a membrane (34) carrying the movable valve member, a closed chamber (36), into which the spring (38) prestressing the membrane is also inserted.
- the line (28) serves to supply the additive either directly into the fuel tank, into the filler pipe of the fuel tank or into a fuel return line of the internal combustion engine.
- the chamber (24) of the diaphragm pump (14) and the chamber (38) of the controllable check valve (30) are each connected to a two-way control valve (44) via a line (40, 42).
- the control valve (44) is also connected to a vacuum source of the motor vehicle via a line (46) into which a vacuum reservoir (48) is connected.
- the vacuum source can either be an existing vacuum pump in the motor vehicle (e.g. for a brake booster) or, in the case of a throttle valve-controlled internal combustion engine, the intake manifold downstream of the throttle valve.
- the control valve (44) has a control slide (50) projecting from its housing (52), which is biased by an internal spring (54) into a switching state in which it controls the chamber (24) via line (40) Diaphragm pump (14) is ventilated (ventilation valve 53) and the line (42) is applied to the chamber (38) of the controllable valve (30) with negative pressure. This negative pressure causes the check valve (34) to be open.
- This switching state is assumed by the control valve (44) when the closure (here screw cap 56) of the fuel tank inlet connection (58) is removed (for refueling the motor vehicle).
- control slide (50) When the fuel tank is closed or the screw cap (56) is screwed on, the control slide (50) is moved into the second switching state by the annular collar (56 a), the line (42) and the chamber (38) of the check valve (30) now being vented (Ventilation slot 51) and the chamber (24) of the diaphragm pump (14) via line (40) is subjected to negative pressure.
- the control valve (44) assumes the other switching state, in which the line (40) is now vented and the line (42) is subjected to a vacuum. This opens the check valve (30) and the diaphragm (18) is opened by the force of the spring (20). the drawing moves down and the additive in the chamber (22) is supplied to the fuel tank in a defined amount or mixed with the fuel.
- the amount of additive supplied from the chamber (22) when the motor vehicle is being refueled can be defined so that it is just sufficient when the fuel tank is fully refueled (maximum tank capacity) in order to achieve the intended effect in the internal combustion engine. This prevents overdosing from occurring during normal refueling (statistically approx. 2/3 of the maximum tank content). If necessary, it would be possible to provide a locking lever or a locking valve on the control slide of the control valve (44) (or at another suitable location), via which an admixture of additive can be prevented if the tank cap is to be opened without intentional refueling.
- the fuel filler cap can expediently be provided with an information label which draws attention to the connection between the opening of the fuel filler cap and the associated admixture of the additive.
- control valve (44) - or the control valve (44) and the vacuum reservoir (48) as a structural unit - can be arranged directly on the fuel tank or on the fuel filler pipe (58). If necessary, even the entire device shown in the drawing can form a single structural unit.
