Definitions
- the present invention relates to a snap hinge closure made of plastic with a lower part and an upper part integrally connected therewith via at least one hinge, which is designed as a cap or lid, and an elastically deformable element which is operatively connected to the two parts during the closing and opening process and which produces the snap action .
- closures have been available on the market for several years and in numerous design forms. Examples of such closures are, for example, the closures described in US Pat. Nos. 3,629,901, 4,386,714 and 4,573,600, as well as a closure mentioned in FR Pat. No. 2,407,140.
- Closures make up an essential part of the packaging of a product. Depending on the type and shape of the container on which the closure is to be attached, and depending on the functional requirements for the closure, the construction must be adapted accordingly. Also the Physical properties of the product to be packaged have an influence on the design of a closure. Finally, the closure also has the function of individualizing the packaged product. All of these requirements have resulted in a huge number of differently designed closures. Plastic closures are manufactured in typical mass production. This entails high initial costs for the development and manufacture of the molds required for injection molding. This is in direct contradiction to the desired variety, which rather forces the number of pieces to be reduced.
- Such a closure which is suitable for various types of packaging, can then be manufactured in huge quantities. Nevertheless, such a closure would still not be competitive in price, for example compared to a simple screw cap.
- such a two-part closure still has to be closed. This takes place after the spraying process, which requires expensive machines in which the closures have to be separated, aligned and closed. In other techniques, such closures are also closed immediately after production in the injection molding machine by means of appropriate levers and only then are they ejected.
- the first variant is expensive in terms of equipment.
- the second variant can only be used if there are not too many cavities in one tool and extends the cycle times considerably.
- the two main components 1, 2, which are integrally connected to one another, namely the ring-shaped lower part 1 and the substantially gable-shaped upper part 2, can be clearly seen in the side views according to FIGS. 1 to 3 , which is used to open the closure using thumb pressure.
- the parting plane T runs exactly on the upper edge of the lower part 1.
- This parting plane T is again shown in broken lines in the sectional drawing according to FIG.
- the lower part 1 consists essentially of an annular wall, from the inside of which a plurality of beads 4 arranged in a circle protrude. These beads 4 serve as positive locking means, which are suitable for fastening the closure on a correspondingly shaped container. As will be explained later, these beads 4 can also be used to grip an adapter piece which establishes the connection with the container on which the closure is to be placed.
- the spout-shaped spout which is usually provided with an external thread, now projects through the lower part 1 into the upper part 2.
- a sealing pin 5 with an annular bead 6 engages around this spout and thus seals the actual cap 2 with respect to the container.
- Upper part 2 and lower part 1 are separated from one another by a circumferential gap 11 (see FIGS. 4-9) and are only connected to one another by a film hinge 7 located in the separating surface T.
- the lower part 1 and upper part can be pivoted relative to one another around this film hinge 7.
- the film hinge 7 is bridged by an elastically deformable element 8 which produces the snap action
- this element 8 consists of a curved, relatively thick, resilient, U-shaped plate which is connected to the upper part 2 and to the lower part 1 by means of two film hinges.
- the film hinge 9 producing the connection to the upper part 2 lies at least approximately in the separating surface T, while the film hinge 10 forming the connection to the lower part 1 lies at least approximately vertically below the previously described film hinge 7.
- the fulcrum moves between the element 8 and the upper part 2, over the pivot axis formed by the film hinge 7, the element 8 being stretched and thus developing the force required for the snap process.
- one or more bridges located in the separating surface T can be attached between the upper and lower part. This also provides the simplest way of ensuring that the packaged product is not damaged.
- FIG. 6 shows a preferred solution for bottle-like containers B '.
- An adaptation piece 20 is inserted here into the actual snap hinge closure, which merely represents an enlarged variant corresponding to the embodiment according to FIGS. 1 to 5. This is one simple, completely symmetrical part that can be injection molded with an inexpensive shape.
- This adapter piece has a horizontal end wall 22 which is missing from the container B '.
- This adapter piece 20 is used to connect the closure to the container B '.
- Such an adapter 20 can be adapted to the neck of the container. Of course, it can be made in any color, even in a color that differs from the color of the actual closure, and thus serves in the simplest way to individualize the product to be packaged.
- FIG. 7 only serves to illustrate the multitude of different design forms of the closure.
- the separating surface between upper part 2 and lower part 1 and also the circumferential gap 11 are graduated. This makes it possible to move the actual snap hinge from the periphery to the center.
- the film hinge 7 connecting the two main parts 1 and 2 now lies in the vertical region of the separating surface T.
- the elastically deformable element 8 which produces the snap action is an elastic tension band which is stretched in the region of its elastic deformation when the closure is opened and closed.
- the adjacent wall areas 12 are designed to be flexible.
- FIG. 8 A further variant of the snap hinge is shown in FIG.
- the element 8 which produces the resilient effect is designed here in the form of a once-bent plate. This plate is stretched to a greater or lesser extent when the closure is opened or closed. Since the plate does not allow a large change in shape, the wall areas 12 adjoining the element 8 can also be designed flexibly here. The easiest way to do this is by reducing the wall thickness or by making slots.
- the adapter 20 can be made of polyethylene. Snap hinge closures must be made of polypropylene because of the strength and the stresses of the element producing the spring elastic effect, as well as because of the film hinges. This material is relatively hard. If the adapter piece is now made from the softer polyethylene, this results in a better seal. This has further advantages because such an adapter piece can be welded directly with a tube and ultimately this also results in cost savings because Polyethylene is about 20-30% cheaper than polypropylene.
- the snap hinge closure according to the invention can have all additional elements that can otherwise also be attached to conventional snap hinge closures.
- only the corresponding guarantee bridge should be mentioned here.
