Definitions
- the present invention relates to an improved mattress consisting of a flat support on one face of which are arranged, spaced from each other, protrusions.
- This type of mattress is already known in principle, particularly by French patent application No. 2 428 999. This is a one-piece mattress fitted on one side of cylindrical protrusions evenly spaced. Due to its monobloc structure, this mattress is of limited use because it cannot adapt to different applications which require different conformations.
- Document DE-3 303 615 also discloses a cushion or mattress formed by the combination of approximately two hundred elastic hollow bodies 2 individual inflatable, arranged on a support plate 1 made of plastic material subdivided into as many compartments as necessary by the presence intermediate partitions which avoid lateral displacement.
- the support plate 1 has orifices 4 which make it possible to reduce the cost and the weight thereof, but are always considerably smaller than the size of the individual bodies 2.
- the invention provides a mattress which, unlike those previously described in the prior art, allows a modification of conformation according to the desired use, in an extremely simple manner allowing easy manufacture and assembly of the together, while retaining a rigidity of the assembly ensuring perfect operation.
- an improved mattress 1 consisting of a flat support on one face of which protrusions 5 are spaced apart from each other, characterized in that it is formed of individual modular elements 3 introduced into openings produced in a support means thereby allowing the modular elements to be fixed spaced apart from one another.
- the modular elements are preferably formed from a base surmounted by one or more protrusions.
- the bases are advantageously of a shape such that all of these form a continuous support. To further maintain the cohesion of the whole, it is possible that the bases have a structure allowing them to fit into each other.
- the protrusions can be of various shapes, for example cylindrical, frustoconical or pyramidal truncated at the top, depending on the desired application.
- they can be made up of air-filled pads or have a central cavity at the base.
- the section of the openings can be substantially circular or even polygonal and be of slightly smaller dimension, equal to or slightly greater than the section of the protrusions.
- the modular elements can be covered with at least one layer of a waterproofing or coloring product.
- the modular elements can be made in two parts, or even more, joined together by any suitable means, for example by gluing.
- protrusions of height is variable and this is one of the fundamental advantages of the invention. So according to the modular elements chosen, it will be possible to have protrusions of height greater than the others at the level of the longitudinal central zone (to support the spine), at the level of the longitudinal edges (to wedge) and at the level of the lower transverse zone (for lumbar vertebrae).
- the resistance to pressure of these protrusions is variable either by the use of materials of different densities, or by the use of modules of different heights, or both combined or any other means allowing the resistance to pressure to be varied. exerted on each module.
- the mattress finds a very interesting application in the manufacture of backrests and armchair seats, especially for cars.
- the mattress 1 consists of a support means 2 here constituted by a plate or grid 2 with square meshes defining openings, in which are engaged individual modules 3.
- These modules are formed by a base 4 whose surface or section is slightly greater than the surface or section of the mesh surmounted by a protuberance 5 which comprises a part 6 with vertical walls near the base whose section is square, then a part 7 of truncated pyramidal shape.
- Part 6 has a square section identical to the section of the opening or mesh or slightly larger so that the opening or mesh can exert a certain pinching on the part 6 and thus maintain the module 3.
- the modules 8 can also include another protuberance 9 opposite the first (FIG. 3a) which includes a part close to the base, the section of which is square. These modules can be used to compensate for any recesses in the support on which the mattress rests. Thus, as can be understood, depending on the shape of the support, these modules 8 will be placed at the desired locations in order to keep the mattress its planar character. According to a second variant, the modules 10 can be of a height greater than the modules 3. This makes it possible to adapt the shape of the mattress to the shape of the human body as has been explained in the description above.
- the modules 8 having protuberances on their two faces allow the making of mattresses without box spring thanks to the addition of a second plate or grid on the side of the lower face, at a certain distance from the first plate or grid c 'that is to say in the intermediate position so as to stiffen the protrusions resting on the ground. It is thus understood that this second plate or grid will have openings of section slightly smaller than the protrusions, so that it is maintained in the intermediate position that it will have been given, without it being able to move even when someone rests on the mattress.
- FIG. 4 shows the possible use of the mattress 1 for making the chair 11.
- the modules can be, for example, polyurethane foam, polyethylene foam, flexible elastomer or any other suitable material of variable density.
- the mattress 1 can form a backrest by being positioned on the back of the chair 11 and maintained by appropriate means. It is made up of modules of different height depending on the position relative to the backrest ( Figure 4a).
- the mattress is provided with modules with protuberance below the level of the lumbar vertebrae and the level of the cervical vertebrae.
- FIG. 4b shows the possible use of the mattress inside the backrest itself with modules without lower protuberance, covered with a fabric 12.
- the mattress adapts to human morphology, it can medically serve as a support for any part of the body in contact according to the pressure exerted by each modular element.
- the plate or grid 2 constitutes a support means for the individual modular elements 3 and can be made of any material having flexibility in bending to allow adaptation to any shape such as, for example, the curved shape of a backrest.
- this plate or support is made of a plastic material such as polyethylene or polypropylene.

Abstract
