On applique de la lumière sur ces matières photoconductrices ou sur ces constituants de façon à ce qu'elles puissent conduire la lumière. Les parties photoconductrices de ces matières sont transparentes à la lumière et retransmettent vers l'extérieur une partie du potentiel de lumière introduit.
