- An automatic person verification system described in U.S. Patent 3,781,113 has a coherent-optical filter matched correlator. It calculates the two-dimensional cross-correlation function between the present fingerprint and a fingerprint that was previously encrypted on an identification card. If these fingerprints match, a bright light spot is created at the output of the optical system. If the prints do not match, a random pattern of low light intensity is generated. Each time the correlated peak exceeds a predetermined threshold, a green light is turned on and a relay is closed. Closing the relay is typically used to energize a door lock solenoid.
- Each identification card in the automatic person verification system contains a small piece of photographic film. The image recorded on this piece of film or chip represents a coded version of the fingerprint of the wearer.
- anyone seeking access to a facility protected by this automatic person verification system must leave a fresh oil fingerprint on a special window.
