Definitions
- the invention relates to a process for the production of epoxides, in particular for the production of acid-labile epoxides.
- Epoxies are valuable intermediates, e.g. for the production of fragrances. Some terpene epoxides are also used as fragrances.
- the preferred percarboxylic acid is peracetic acid, in particular the commercially available equilibrium peracetic acid (abbreviated to PES-40) with the following approximate composition:
- Perpropionic acid or perbutyric acids are particularly indicated if this facilitates or only enables a distillative workup with regard to the boiling points.
- DE-OS 2 835 940 proposes for the production of reactive bicyclic terpene epoxides, e.g. a-pinene oxide, with PES-40 also the so-called “soda process” explained above.
- PES-40 also the so-called “soda process” explained above.
- the use of certain chlorinated hydrocarbons is still required to achieve useful results.
- a revision of the examples of DE-OS 2 835 940 gave very fluctuating results in terms of yield and product purity.
- a clear dependency on the stirring conditions and the nature of the solid base with regard to particle size distribution and surface structure was found, so that the reproducibility of the process is not given.
- the object of the present invention was therefore to overcome the disadvantages indicated and to provide a process which enables epoxidation with high yield and high product purity under conditions which can be reproduced at any time.
- the invention relates to a process for the preparation of epoxides by epoxidation of the underlying olefins with peracetic acid containing strong acids in the presence of acid-binding agents in a solvent and / or excess of the olefin, which is characterized in that the strong acid is added before the addition of the peracetic acid the reaction mixture is bound with an at least equivalent amount of an inorganic base and that the reaction mixture contains 0.50 to 0.74 val of acid-binding agent per mole of total amount of peracetic acid and acetic acid in addition to the corresponding olefin.
- Acid-labile epoxides are those that undergo changes in the presence of lower carboxylic acids. They are derived in particular from olefins which bear two substituents or an aryl radical on at least one carbon atom of the olefinic double bond, or from cycloolefins, in particular from the bicyclic terpenes. Examples of such olefins are isobutene, 1,1,2-trimethylethylene, tetramethylethylene, styrene, acenaphthylene, cyclohexene, 1-alkylcyclohexene, alpha- and ⁇ -pinene, camphene, linalyl acetate, cedren and calaren.
- Solutions of peracetic acid in the underlying carboxylic acid, which also contain a strong acid, are preferably used as the epoxidation agent.
- Preferred such solutions are the so-called equilibrium peracetic acids described above, which are formed by acid-catalyzed reaction of the acetic acid with hydrogen peroxide.
- Equilibrium peracetic acid (PES-40) is particularly preferred.
- equilibrium peracetic acid should not be construed as restricting the fact that a true equilibrium must be established. Rather, it expresses the fact that in addition to peracetic acid there are also acetic acid and catalytic amounts of a strong acid, as well as possibly water and hydrogen peroxide. Accordingly, true equilibrium systems that have been modified subsequently, e.g. by adding the corresponding carboxylic acid anhydride or by adding an inert diluent, according to the invention.
- Sulfuric acid is usually present as a strong acid in the equilibrium percarboxylic acids in an amount of 0.5 to 1%. But also other strong mineral acids, such as phosphoric and nitric acids, and strong organic acids, e.g. B. alkanesulfonic acids can be used.
- Alkali carbonates or alkali hydrogen carbonates are preferably used as the acid-binding agent for neutralizing the acetic acid.
- the amount depends on the sensitivity of the epoxide to acetic acid. As a rule, it is to be dimensioned in such a way that the original acetic acid is completely neutralized. For less unstable epoxies, about 75% of this amount is sufficient. In extreme cases, the acetic acid formed from the peracetic acid must also be bound.
- the acid-binding agent is added in solid form.
- the reaction is carried out in the presence of a solvent and / or an excess of the olefin, the amount having to be sufficient to ensure the stirrability of the reaction mixture.
- Halogenated hydrocarbons especially chlorinated hydrocarbons, such as methylene chloride, chloroform, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichloropropane, chlorobenzene (for kinetic reasons; Swern, p.459) are the preferred solvents.
- other inert solvents such as benzene, toluene, ethyl acetate, dioxane, can also be used, but with a correspondingly longer reaction time.
- the process according to the invention does not require as strong a dependence on solvents as in the process of DE-OS 2 835 940, according to which reasonably satisfactory results can only be achieved with certain chlorinated hydrocarbons as solvents.
- the reaction temperature generally depends on the reactivity of the olefin; it is usually between -20 and 60 ° C, preferably 10 to 40 ° C. Higher temperatures should be avoided in order to keep the decomposition of the percarboxylic acid as low as possible.
- known peroxide stabilizers such as. B. 2,6-dipicolinic acid and Hydroxyrelihandiphosphonklare be added.
- Inorganic bases for binding the strong acid can be the alkali or alkaline earth salts of the respective carboxylic acid or the carbonates, hydrogen carbonates, oxides or hydroxides of the alkali or alkaline earth metals. They are preferably added in solid form to the solution of peracetic acid; however, aqueous, preferably concentrated, aqueous solutions can also be used. If the inorganic base is added to the solution of the peracetic acid, precipitates that may form can be filtered off, if dosing problems are to be feared, or brought into solution by adding a small amount of water.
- Milder bases such as the carboxylates and carbonates
- Sodium acetate, anhydrous or as a trihydrate is particularly suitable.
- Another selection criterion is the lowest possible level of heavy metal ions, which can also cause destabilization. It may therefore be expedient to add suitable masking agents, such as in particular chelating agents for heavy metal ions, to the aqueous solution of the inorganic base and / or the solution of peracetic acid to bind interfering heavy metal ions.
- the following examples illustrate the invention without restricting it to them.
- the two comparative examples 1 and 2 also illustrate the surprising technical progress of the method according to the invention compared to the methods of the prior art.
- Percentages refer above and below to percentages by weight.
- PES-40 Commercial equilibrium peracetic acid
- the mixture is left to stir at 40 ° C. for 1 h and then 200 g of water are added to the reaction mixture, the sodium acetate formed dissolving.
- the organic phase is separated off and washed again with 100 ml of water.
- the sodium acetate formed is dissolved by adding 200 g of water and, after phase separation, washed with 100 g of 7% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution. After the chloroform has been stripped off on a rotary evaporator, 76 g of a-pinene oxide with a content of 95% are obtained; this corresponds to a yield of 95% of theory, based on a-pinene.
- This example shows that the reaction according to the invention can be transferred to a larger scale without difficulty.
- the sodium acetate formed is dissolved by adding 1750 g of water and, after phase separation, washed with 1000 g of 7% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and water.
- the organic phase is washed with 1000 g of 7% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and water, and the chloroform is then distilled off on a rotary evaporator in a water jet vacuum at 50 ° C.
- the yield of epoxylinalyl acetate is 1072 g with a content of 99% and is quantitative.
- the dichloromethane phase is washed once with 100 g of 7% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and then subjected to fractional vacuum distillation using a well-separating column.
- the amount of cyclohexene oxide obtained is 93 g and has a content of 99%; this corresponds to a yield of 94% of theory, based on cyclohexene.
- the mixture is then worked up in a known manner, without distilling off the chloroform.
- the gas chromatogram - made with solvent suppression - shows an isobutene oxide content of 99%.
- 121 g of a-pinene oxide with a content of 97% correspond to a yield of 77% of theory, based on a-pinene.
- the low yield is due to an insufficient separation of benzene / a-pinene oxide during the distillative workup on a rotary evaporator.
- the distillate (benzene) contained a-pinene oxide.
- the sodium acetate formed is dissolved by adding 4000 ml of water and, after phase separation, washed with 1000 ml of water. Rectification with a well separating column gives 876 g of cyclopentene oxide with a content of 98%. The yield is quantitative.
- the organic phase is washed with 2000 g of 7% sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and water, and the chloroform is then distilled off on a rotary evaporator in a water jet vacuum at 50 ° C.
