Definitions
- the present invention relates to a process for the preparation of quaternary phosphonium hydroxides of the general formula in which R is either hydrogen or an aliphatic or an aromatic hydrocarbon having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, but in particular having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and n is 1 or 2, by reacting di- or trimethylphosphine with epoxides of the general formula in which R has the above meaning, in an aqueous medium.
- a disadvantage of this method is that after the starting substances have been brought together, the reaction starts with a long delay, but then is very stormy runs. As a result, the reaction mixture is rapidly heated during the exothermic reaction and part of the volatile di- or trimethylphosphine is expelled from the reaction vessel before it is able to react with the epoxy.
- the known procedure for producing the quaternary phosphonium hydroxides can be improved if the aqueous medium is adjusted to a pH ⁇ 12 using bases before the starting components are mixed with one another in this medium.
- Water alone or in a mixture with an organic solvent, can be used as the aqueous medium.
- the reaction is preferably carried out at temperatures between -10 and + 35 ° C. It is advisable to use 1 to 10 moles, preferably 3 to 5 moles, of water per mole of di- or trimethylphosphine and to use the epoxide in excess of the methylphosphine, based on the stoichiometric amount required to form the desired phosphonium hydroxide.
- the pH of the aqueous medium is adjusted in particular with the aid of an alkali metal hydroxide.
- the process according to the invention is carried out in such a way that the working medium is placed in a reactor which is equipped with a stirrer, a thermometer, a pH meter, a gas inlet tube, a reflux condenser with a gas outlet and a dropping funnel.
- a reactor which is equipped with a stirrer, a thermometer, a pH meter, a gas inlet tube, a reflux condenser with a gas outlet and a dropping funnel.
- This consists either only of water or a mixture of water with an organic solvent that is soluble in water, such as an alcohol, or that is insoluble in water, such as an ether. It is recommended that at least 1 mole of water is specified per mole of dimethylphosphine or trimethylphosphine.
- the water is then mixed with a small amount of a base, in particular NaOH, adjusted to a pH equal to or greater than 12.
- the amount of epoxides added can of course be greater than the stoichiometric amount required to form the desired phosphonium hydroxide. However, there is then a risk that the excess of epoxides will continue to react under the reaction conditions to form polyglycols which are known to be difficult to separate from the desired phosphonium hydroxide. It is therefore preferred to react 1 or 2 moles of epoxide per mole of alkylphosphine. It is also favorable to work with an excess of alkylphosphine, since this can easily be separated off at T> 40 ° C. after the end of the reaction and used again.
- the solvents are separated from the quaternary phosphonium hydroxide formed in a known manner under gentle conditions. by distillation, possibly at negative pressure.
- the quaternary, phosphonium hydroxides are obtained as oily, extremely hydroscopic, colorless liquids.
- a particular advantage of the method according to the invention is that by neutralization with the corresponding Any quaternary phosphonium salt with respect to the anion can be prepared.
- the invention which is of course not restricted to the generally described embodiment, enables for the first time the simple preparation of methyl 2-hydroxyalkyl (aralkyl) phosphonium hydroxides, which are widely used in the form of their salts as flame retardants, vulcanization accelerators, phase transfer catalysts, crop protection agents, pharmaceuticals and the like.
- the reaction could then be completed while maintaining the temperature of 15 ° C.
- the phosphonium hydroxide solution obtained was neutralized with HCl solution and evaporated to dryness at 110 ° C. and 20 torr.
- the product was taken up in 150 ml of ethanol and the trimethyl-2-hydroxyethylphosphonium chloride [(CH 3 ) 3 PCH 2 -CH 2 -OH] Cl was separated from this solution in colorless crystals with 1000 ml of acetone.
- a total of 55 g of the chloride (identification see Example 2) was obtained, which corresponds to a yield of 70.6%, based on ⁇ CH 3 ) 3 P.
- the compound had a melting point of 267 C.
- Example 2 The reaction according to Example 1 was repeated, with the difference that a mixture of 5 mol of H 2 O and 5 mol of isopropanol was used as the working medium and the reaction temperature was 30 ° C.
- the phosphonium hydroxide solution obtained was neutralized with hydrochloric acid and worked up to [(CH 3 ) 3 PCH 2 -CH 2 OH] Cl as in Example 1. 137 g of end product were obtained, corresponding to a yield of 87.5%.
- Example 2 The reaction according to Example 1 was repeated, with the difference that a suspension of 10 mol of H 2 O and 3 mol of diethyl ether was used as the working medium and the Re action temperature was 0 ° C.
- the aqueous phosphonium hydroxide solution obtained was separated from the ether, neutralized with hydrochloric acid and worked up to [(CH 3 ) 3 PCl 2 -CH 2 OH] Cl as in Example 1. 12 1 g of end product were obtained, corresponding to a yield of 77.3%.
- the compound had a melting point of 169 ° C.
- the phosphonium hydroxide solution obtained was neutralized with hydrochloric acid and worked up to [(CH 3 ) 3 P-CH 2 -CHOH-P] Cl.
- the compound could not be obtained as a crystalline substance, but only as a syrupy mass. 180 g of end product were obtained, corresponding to a yield of 77.7%.
- the phosphonium hydroxide solution obtained was neutralized with hydrochloric acid and worked up to [(CH 3 ) 2 (CH 2 -CHOH-CH 3 ) 2 ] Cl.
- the compound could not be obtained as a crystalline substance, but only as a syrupy mass. 176 g of end product were obtained, corresponding to a yield of 82.4%.

Abstract
Description
Werte > 14 an.
