По истечении проектного срока службы ИЖСР, например от 3 до 10 лет, последний отсоединяется, извлекается и заменяется как единое целое. Использованный ИЖСР служит для хранения радиоактивного графита, и/или теплообменников, и/или управляющих стержней, и/или топливной соли, содержащихся в корпусе ИЖСР.
