Description

Process for the esterification of cellulose In the main patent 581 827 it was shown that methionic acid (methanedisulfonic acid) is a particularly valuable catalyst for the esterification of cellulose.

It has now been found that the methionic acid substituted by a nitro group, nitromethanedisulfonic acid of the formula CH (NO,) (S O3 H) 2, is very close in its properties as a catalyst in the esterification of cellulose to methionic acid and has successfully replaced it can be used for this response. The entry of the nitro group into the catalyst molecule has a reinforcing effect on the catalytic effect, so that in many cases even smaller amounts of catalyst can be used than in the process according to the main patent. The use of the new catalyst for the esterification and, if appropriate, also the pretreatment of the cellulose can be carried out in the same way as that of any other catalyst known for this reaction, in particular in all of the embodiments as described in the main patent.

Es besitzt einen Essigsäuregehalt von 62,5 %.Examples i. 100 parts of cotton are placed in glacial acetic acid for a few hours and, after centrifuging at 20 to 25 ' , acetylated with a mixture composed of 42o parts of acetic anhydride (9o to 92%), 84o parts of benzene, 43o parts of sulfurous acid and 1.2 Parts of 60% nitromethanedisulphonic acid (corresponding to 0.7 parts of 100% acid) consists. After 8 to 10 hours, a fibrous cellulose triacetate has formed which, after stripping, washing and drying, is clearly soluble in a mixture of 90 parts by volume of methyl chloride and 10 parts by volume of alcohol. It has an acetic acid content of 62.5%.

The esterification product can readily be used to produce a wide variety of Artifacts are used; but of course you can also turn it into a product beforehand another Transfer solubility properties in a known manner.

Es ist in einem Gemisch von Methylenchlorid-Alköhol (g : z Volumteil) klar löslich.2. zoo parts of bleached linters, suitably pretreated with glacial acetic acid in a known manner, are mixed with a mixture of 354 parts of acetic anhydride (g to g2%), 467 parts of glacial acetic acid, zoo parts of monochloroacetic acid and 1.67 parts of 600% nitromethane disulphonic acid (corresponding to z part 100% acid) acetylated at about 25 '. The acetylation product dissolved during the reaction is precipitated with water and washed and dried in a known manner. It is clearly soluble in a mixture of methylene chloride-alcohol (g: z by volume).
