Description
Process for the production of highly viscous organic cellulose esters Patent specification gI3 363 describes a process for the production of acetone-soluble acetyl cellulose described in which the catalysts are a mixture of sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid and zinc chloride is applied. The patent states that when used worthless products can easily be obtained from free sulfuric acid alone, and that the joint use of zinc chloride and free sulfuric acid alone so far also did not deliver any valuable products, since the solutions of those produced in this way Acetyl cellulose are so cloudy that they are unusable for all purposes.
This information may be true when using such large amounts strongly effective catalysts, as specified in the patent mentioned, where, for example, 4 01o sulfuric acid is used. Meanwhile, however Process has become known, according to which, using smaller amounts (under 2 down to 0.5%) strong catalysts, such as sulfuric acid or hyperchloric acid Technically useful acetyl celluloses and other organic cellulose esters are produced compare, for example, the processes of patent specifications 5I9 877, 526 479, 528 821 and 58I 954.
The present invention now represents an improvement on the latter mentioned field of the production of highly viscous organic cellulose esters using of less than 201, a strong mineral acid such as sulfuric acid or hyperchloric acid, as a catalyst. It has been found that it is particularly advantageous in this process the esterification mixture still contains up to about 50 liters of zinc chloride, based on the weight of the cellulose.
This addition of zinc chloride does not contribute to any Reinforcement the catalytic effect; because the esterification takes place without the addition of zinc chloride even a little faster. However, the addition of zinc chloride increases the viscosity the cellulose ester produced in this way is greatly increased. The quantities of zinc chloride, which have to be added to achieve this effect are, as I said, small.
About 1 to about 5 0/0 are sufficient. These amounts are much lower than those in which zinc chloride is commonly used as a catalyst for cellulose acetylation is used (25 to Ioo ° lo).
It has also been proposed to use zinc chloride as a catalyst Hydrochloric acid should be used in amounts greater than 20/0 in order to ensure the clarity of the cellulose ester solutions to increase. From this it could not be concluded that when using less than 2 0 / o of a strong mineral acid as a catalyst with the addition of small amounts Zinc chloride particularly highly viscous cellulose ester solutions would be obtained.
Otherwise nothing needs to be changed in the gelulose esterification process to become. The invention can be used in the same way for the production of high viscosity uniform cellulose ester as of mixed esters, both of which also hydrolyze can be. Furthermore, the method according to the invention is in the same way for Production of solution as well as fiber esters suitable. The following are a few Embodiments indicated: Example I 100 parts of cellulose with 40 parts of propionic acid can be pretreated with an esterification mixture of 300 parts of methylene chloride, 400 parts of propionic anhydride, 1 part of sulfuric acid and 3 parts of zinc chloride esterified at a temperature of 400 until a completely fiber-free solution was formed is. The product is processed in the usual way, i. H. it will for example after the excess anhydride has been destroyed, the catalyst sulfuric acid is blunted, the methylene chloride is distilled off and the ester is removed by a known method the solution precipitated and then bleached, treated and dried. The viscosity of this cellulose tripropionate is, for example, 6.2 ° East, while the tripropionate produced in the same way but without the addition of zinc chloride only has a viscosity of 2.80 Ost under the same conditions.
I. Example 2 100 parts of cellulose, which has been pretreated with 40 parts of glacial acetic acid are, with an esterification mixture of 300 parts of methylene chloride, I25 parts Acetic anhydride, 175 parts propionic anhydride, I part sulfuric acid and 3 Parts of zinc chloride are esterified at a temperature of 30 until they are fiber-free. The mixture is worked up in the same or a similar manner as in the example I.
The viscosity of the cellulose acetopropionate thus obtained is I7.7 ° East in acetone or 23.7 ° East in a mixture of methylene chloride and methanol (9: I), while one produced by the same process without the addition of zinc chloride Acetopropionate has a viscosity of only 9 + Ost in acetone and I2.8 "Ost in methylene chloride methanol (9: 1) shows.
Beispiel 3 IOO Teile Cellulose, die mit 40 Teilen Eisessig vorbehandelt sein können, werden mit 300 Teilen Methylenchlorid, 300 Teilen Essigsäureanhydrid, 400 Teilen Buttersäure, I Teil Schwefelsäure und 3 Teilen Zinkchlorid bei 30° verestert, bis Faserfreiheit der Lösung erreicht ist. Die Aufarbeitung erfolgt wie in Beispiel I. Example 3 100 parts of cellulose pretreated with 40 parts of glacial acetic acid can be, with 300 parts of methylene chloride, 300 parts of acetic anhydride, 400 parts of butyric acid, I part of sulfuric acid and 3 parts of zinc chloride esterified at 30 °, until the solution is free of fibers. The work-up is carried out as in the example I.
8,5° Ost in Methylenchloridmethanol 9: 1). In this case too, the viscosity is the same as with the addition of zinc chloride Cellulose acetobutyrates produced with II, 60 East in acetone and I5.5 "East in methylene chloride methanol (g: I) significantly higher than the viscosity of one in the same way, but without the addition of zinc chloride Acetobutyrates produced (6.6 ° East in acetone or 8.5 ° East in methylene chloride methanol 9: 1).
Example 4 100 parts of cellulose, which has been pretreated with 50 parts of glacial acetic acid are, with 400 parts of methylene chloride, 300 parts of acetic anhydride, o, 5 parts Overchloric acid (700ig) and 3 parts of zinc chloride esterified at 250 until the solution is fiber-free. The esterification mixture can be added in several proportions will.
For hydrolysis, 50 parts of water and 5 parts of superchloric acid (700 / zig) admitted. At a temperature of 50 ° up to an acetic acid content of about 53 0 each hydrolyzed. The viscosity of this hydrolyzed made with zinc chloride Cellulose acetate is, with In,? 0 Ost in acetone, much higher than the viscosity a cellulose acetate produced in the same way but without the addition of zinc chloride (7.4 ° East in acetone).
