etwa 35 °/" betragen.Process for the preparation of aromatic oxyaldehydes The oxidation of
i-Eugenol and other phenols containing propenyl residues with the help of ozone suffers
known to have the disadvantage that this requires expensive equipment
and that with the known activity of ozone, which forces the hydroxyl groups
to seal the plienols to be oxidized with acid residues before treatment with ozone,
only relatively low concentrations of the same come into question. So you already have
Attempts have been made to oxidize the above phenols with the aid of other oxidizing agents

To avoid acidification, only the calculated amount per 1 mole of the phenol was used

as his experimental review has shown, at the same time considerable
Resinization of the reaction product only extremely unsatisfactory yields, which at best

So liefert z. B. i -Oxy-2-äthoxy-4-propenylbenzol
das wertvolle, nächsthöhere Homologe des Vanillins. Auch kompliziertere Derivate
des i, 2-Dioxy-.I-propenylbenzols, z.B.der2-i@Iethoxvinethylälher des i, 2-Dioxy-4-propenylbenzols,

.4o g.It has now been found that yields of 80 to 90 "/" are obtained if the reaction is carried out with the aid of excess nitrobenzene. This excess of the nitrobenzene is used to cause the phenolate to dissolve; this gives you the opportunity to stir the reaction mass thoroughly and thus to make the course of the reaction evenly. It is sufficient to heat the mixture to a higher temperature in order to initiate the more or less violent reaction. If you want to moderate it still further, you increase the excess of nitrobenzene used. Most of the nitrobenzene involved in the process is converted into aniline. The oxyaldehyde formed can be isolated in a known manner after the excess nitrobenzene and the aniline have been separated off. The reaction can also be transferred to other o- and p-propenyloxybenzene-. For example, B. i-Oxy-2-ethoxy-4-propenylbenzene the valuable, next higher homologue of vanillin. More complicated derivatives of i, 2-dioxy-1-propenylbenzene, e.g. Example i 28 g of a mixture of 32.8 g of i-eugenol and 115 ccm of 30% potassium hydroxide solution, dried in vacuo at about 80 °, are poured over with Co g of nitrobenzene and heated to about 150 ° in an oil bath The oil bath is removed from the oil bath and the reaction is allowed to complete on its own Lye is acidified, the product which precipitates out is taken up with benzene and the vanillin formed is removed from the benzene solution with bisulfite lye. The bisulfite lye is decomposed by acidification and the vanillin which has crystallized out is filtered off with suction, washed and dried. It is obtained completely pure by distillation and crystallization -: Ethyl ether of i, 2-dioxy-.f-propenylbenzene is finite 53o g of powdered caustic soda with the addition of 100 ccm Rubbed in water. The resulting sodium salt, which does not require drying, is obtained as an easily friable sandy product. For oxidation it is introduced into 1.8 kg of nitrobenzene. The oxidation temperature is kept at izo to 125 °. Duration about hours. The excess nitrobenzene, along with the aniline and azobenzene formed, are then blown off for the most part with steam. dilutes the residue with water and shakes the alkaline solution out again with benzene to remove any nitrobenzene still present and its reduction products. It is then acidified with hydrochloric acid, the aldehyde which precipitates is taken up with benzene and the aqueous layer is extracted twice more with benzene. The combined benzene solutions are concentrated if necessary and then exhaustively extracted with bisulfite lye. By decomposing the bisulfite lye with hydrochloric acid, about 400 g of the m-ethyl ether of Protocatechualdeh_vds are obtained in a very pure form. For example 3 50 g of o-eugenol are mixed with 78 g of caustic potash and 36 ccm of water and heated to -aoo to 210 ° over the course of one hour while stirring on the descending cooler. The remaining wet salt (consisting of a mixture of o-tsoeugenol potassium with excess caustic potash) is powdered and gradually poured into 150 g. itrobenzene registered. The temperature is maintained at 115 to 125 ' . When the oxidation is complete, the mixture is taken up with water, the nitrobenzene layer is separated off, the latter is washed once more with water, and steam is blown through the combined aqueous-alkaline liquors to remove residual nitrobenzene and aniline. It is then acidified, extracted with benzene and the benzene extract is shaken with bisulfite liquor. The aldehyde obtained by decomposition of the bisulfite solution with dilute sulfuric acid is in a vacuum at 134 to i35 ° (i3 mm) as a light yellow about 01. Yield 35 to 40 g.
