'. Verfahren zur Herstellung eines.Polyurethans.
Die Erfindung betrifft die' Herstellung flexibler oder -harter
Polyurethanschäume mit verbesserten physikalischen und chemischen
Eigenschaften durch chemische Umsetzung von
(A) einem organischen Polyisocyanat und
(B) dem C©polymerisat aus (a) einem polymerisierbaren
organischen Viny!monomeren mit entweder einer Doppelbindung
oder zwei Doppelbindungen in Konjugation zueinander und (b) einem hydroxylhaltigen Comonomer, das im wesentlichen-aus einem
ungesättigten Polyalkylenäther-Macromonomer mit einem
Iquivalentgewicht von etwa 100 bis 3000 besteht und das 1 bis
3 Hydroxylgruppen und eine copolymerisierbare Unsättigung pro Molekül enthält.

Man bezeichnet diejenigen Polymerisate als Polyurethane, die
axe charakteristische Urethanbindung, .-N-C-O- enthalten,

die als gemischter Amidester einer Carbonsäure angesehen werden
kann. Die "Urethanpolymerisate" umfassen nicht nur Homopolymerisate
sondern auch Copolymerisate, bei denen die Urethanbindung
nur eine von vielen Bindungstypen in der Polymerisatkette sein kann. Ein Polyurethan kann somit aus einer großen
Vielfalt von Resten und Bindungen, einschließlich sauerstoff-, Schwefel-, stickstoff- und kohlenstoffhaltigen Gruppen, wie
Amino—, Amido-, Sulfamido-, Ester-, Äther- und Kohlenwasserstoffresten
und Bindungen, zusammengesetzt sein.
Es ist bekannt, daß ein Polyurethan durch Umsetzung eines organischen
polyfunktionellen Isocyanates mit einer geeigneten Hydroxylkomponente, nämlich einer organischen Verbindung mit
zwei oder mehr reaktiven Wasser stoff atomen ("bestimmt nach Zerewitinoff), wie sie z.B. an einem Polyester, einem PoIyesteramid,
einem Polyalkylenäther, einem Polyacetal oder einem Polyalkylenthioäther gefunden werden, hergestellt werden kann.
Wird diese Umsetzung unter wasserfreien Bedingungen durchgeführt, so kann das resultierende Polyurethan ein nicht poröses. '

Wenn ein zelliges oder geschäumtes Produkt gewünscht wird, können Wasser und wenigstens eine äquivlaente Menge Isocyanat
der Mischung zugesetzt werden. Wenn Wasser mit den Isocyanatgruppen,
die vorher nicht reagiert haben, reagiert, wird Kohlendioxyd gebildet und in der Reaktionsmisehung eingeschlossen.
Ein Hilfstreibmittel, wie eine flüchtige Fluorkohlenstoff
verbindung, kann ebenfalls verwendet werden» Die Gelie-•rungszeit
der Reaktionsmischung wird gewöhnlich gesteuert, . vorzugsweise so, daß sie etwas länger ist als die Aufstiegszeit, so daß die sich verfestigende Masse damit das Kohlendioxyd
oder ein anderes Gas einschließt und ein geschäumtes Produkt ergibt.

Bei der Herstellung von Polyurethanschäumen ist es sehr wichtig,
die Tragfähigkeit "bei einer konstanten Dichte konstant haJLten
zu können und in vielen Fällen maximale Tragfähigkeit bei einer
gegebenen Dichte erzielen zu können, insbesondere vom Standpunkt der Y/irtschaftliehkeit und der Qualitätskontrolle her
gesehen. Ein Weg die Tragfähigkeit zu,erhöhen, ist der, den
Polyisocyahatgehalt zu erhöhen, obgleich dies keine gar zu
wirksame Maßnahme ist. Außerdem nimmt bei der industriellen Produktion bei der Anwendung einer höheren Isocyanat-Maßzahl
die potentielle Feuergefahr dort zu, wo frischer, (nicht vollständig
gehärteter) Schaum gelagert wird.
Erfindungsgesäß wird ein Polyurethanschaum mit verbesserten
physikalischen und chemischen Eigenschaften, wie einer erhöhten
Tragfähigkeit, erhöhter Zugfestigkeit, verbessertem Elastizitätsmodul und erhöhter Lösungsmittelbeständigkeit,
hergestellt. . . .
Die Erfindung betrifft somit.die Herstellung eines Polyurethanschaumes mit verbesserten physikalischen und chemischen Eigenschaften
durch chemische Umsetzung von .
(A) einem organischen Polyisocyanat und
(B) . dem Copolymerisat aus
(a) einem polymerisierbaren organischen Tiny!monomeren
mit entweder einer Doppelbindung^oder zwei konjugierten,Doppelbindungen
und
(b) eiiiein hydroxylhaltigen Comomner, das im wesentlichen
aus einem ungesättigten •Polyalkylenäther-Macroinonomer mit einem
Äqu-ivälentgewicht von etwa 100 bis 3000 besteht und das 1 bis
Hydroxylgruppen und eine copolymerisierbare Unsättigung"pro
Molekül enthält.-

Gemäß einer Ausführungsform der vorliegenden Erfindung wird
ein flexibler oder harter Polyurethanschaum mit verbesserter Festigkeit und Lösungsmittelbeständigkeit hergestellt.
Gemäß einer anderen Ausführungsform der vorliegenden Erfindung
wird ein flexibler Polyurethanschaum mit verbesserter Tragfähigkeit
und verbesserten Druckverformungseigenschaften, verglichen mit flexiblen Schäumen gleicher Dichte, die auf übliche Weise
hergestellt worden sind, hergestellt.
Gemäß einer weiteren Auführungsform der vorliegenden Erfindung wird ein harter Polyurethanschaum hergestellt, der eine verbesserte
Festigkeit pro Volumenverhältnis auf v/eist.
Es wurde hier gefunden, daß einzigartige und wertvolle Polyolharze
erhalten werden können, wenn Vinylmonomere mit einem Polyäther copolymerisiert werden, der eine polymerisierbare
Kohlenstoff-Kohlenstoff-Doppelbindung und eine bis 3 Hydroxylgruppen
pro Molekül enthält.
Der hydroxylhaltige ungesättigte Polyäther (Macromonomer) kann
leicht durch Homopolymerisation oder Copolymerisation von Alkylenoxyden der allgemeinen Formel:

worin R1 eine Aryl-, Alkoxy- oder Alkylcarboxygruppe mit weniger als 10 Kohlenstoffatomen bedeutet.
Zu typischen Alkylenoxyden gehören Äthylenoxyd, Propylenoxyd, Butylenoxyd, Styroloxyd und Alkyl- oder Arylglycidyläther oder
-ester, polymerisiert mit einem Katalysator, vorzugsweise einem

komplexen Gyanidkatalysator, z.B. Zn^(Co(GN)>)2, in Anwesenheit
eines passenden ungesättigten Initiators. Derartige Katalysatoren sind in den US Patentschriften Nr. 3 427 256;
3 427 334 und 3 427 335 angegeben.
Der. gewählte Initiator ist eine Verbindung, die eine polymer!-
sierbare ungesättigte Gruppe.und 1 bis 3 aktive Wasserstoffatome
,'die zur Initiierung, einer Alkylenoxydpolymerisation
in Kombination mit dem gewählten Katalysator befähigt sind, enthält. . -
Beispiele für .geeignete Initiatoren sind: Monobasische Säuren,
wie Acrylsäure, Methacrylsäure., Crotonsäure, Zimtsäure und
Abietinsäure und ihre Hydroxyalkylester oder -amide; dibasische
Säuren oder ihre Derivate,, wie Maleinsäure,, Fumarsäure,
Citraconsäure, Itaconsäure, Mesaconsäure,, Chlormaleinsäure,
Cyclohexen-dicarbonsäure, Endomethylen-cyclohexendicarbonsäure und 1,4,5,6,7,7-Hexachlorbicyelo-(2,2r1)-5-hepten—2,3-dicärbonsäure
und ihre Monoester, Monoamlde und
entsprechende Hydroxyalkylderivate; tribasische Säuren, wie A.conltsäure und ihre Mono- und Diester und -amide und entsprechende Hydroxyalkylderivatei Hydroxyalkyl- oder Dihydroxyalkylvinyläther
oder ungesättigte hydroxyhaltige Verbindungen, wie Allyl-, Crotyl- und Methallylalkohol, Butandiol und seine
Homologen; Monoallyl-, Crotyl- oder Methallyläther von Dihydroxy— oder !Prihydroxyalkanen; Hydroxyalkyl-N-vinylcarbamate
oder li-Vinyl-K'-hydroxyalkylharnstoff und andere.
Die nach Zugabe von Alkylenoxyd zu dem Initiator erhaltenen
"MacrompDOmeren" können A'quivalentgeviichte zwischen IQQ und
3000 pro Hydroxylgruppe haben. --".-.' '
DieinEbnibinatiQn mit dem obigen Macromonomer verwendeten Vinylverbindungen
können irgendein iipnomeres oder ein Monomergemiscii
sein, das so beschaffep. sein kann, daß es mit dem Maeromonomer
mit Hilfe eines Radikalmechanismus unter Anwendung einer bekannten
!Dechnik copolymerisiert.

Beispiele für diese Viny!monomeren sind: Acrylnitril, Methacrylnitril,
Vinylacetat, Vinylchlorid, Vinylidenchlorid', die niedrigmolekulargewichtigen Acrylate und Methacrylate, Acrylamid,
Styrol und substituierten Styrole, Itaconate, Butadien, Isopren, Vinylpyridine, Vinyl sulfonate, Vinyl- und Allylderivate
der Phosphorsäuren und viele andere.
Die Copolymerisation kann entweder in der Masse, vorzugweise in Anwesenheit von genügend Kettenübertragungsmittel, um
die Bildung eines hölier als erwünschten Molekulargewichtes zu
verhüten, oder in Lösung durchgeführt werden.
Als Initiatoren für die radikalische Polymerisation können
entweder Peroxyde oder aliphatische Diazoverbindungen verwendet werden. Das Molekulargewicht des Copolymerisates, bestimmt
nach irgendeiner konzentrationsabhängigen Methode, liegt im - allgemeinen in der Nähe von 500 bis 7000, je nach
dem. Molekular gewicht des Macormonomeren und dem gewünschten
Endprodukt. Die Polymerisationsbedingungen (Temperatur, Zeit, Menge und Art des Kettenübertragungsmittels etc.) richten sich
nach der Art der verwendeten Monomeren.
Die Copolymeren sind vorzugsweise viskose Flüssigkeiten (insbesondere
wenn sie als die einzige Polyolkomponente bei TJrethanherstellungen
ohne Lösungsmittel verwendet werden sollen) oder Festsubstanzen, die in handelsüblichen Polyolen oder in Lösungsmitteln
gelöst werden können, die im allgemeinen bei der Zubereitung von Polyurethanüberzügen verwendet werden. Das Verhältnis von Macromonomer zu Vinylmonomer(en) (in Molen) kann-zwischen
1:5 "bis 1:50 liegen, was von dem gewünschten Endprodukt und dem Copolymerisationsverhalten der Monomeren abhängig ist.
Die Copolymerisation wird vorzugsweise so durchgeführt, daß die durchschnittliche Funktionalität der erhaltenen Harze
zwischen 2 und 4 (wenn der angestrebte Endgebrauch auf dem Gebiet der flexiblen Urethane liegt) oder höher liegt (z.B. 3
bis 6) wenn Harze für harte Materialien gewünscht werden.

Die durchschnittliche Funktionalität wird im allgemeinen durch
das Verhältnis von Vinylmonomer zu hydroxyhaltiger Komponente
und dem Molekulargewicht, des C©polymerisates bestimmt.
Die copolymeren Harze der vorliegenden Erfindung können in
allen Polyurethantypen, wie Überzügen, Klebstoffen,- Gußelastomeren und harten oder flexiblen Schäumen verwendet werden.
Sie können entweder alleine oder vermischt mit anderen isocyanatreaktiven
Harzen verwendet werden.
Jedes geeignete organische Polyisocyanat kann im erfindungsgemäßen
Verfahren verwendet werden, wie z.B. äliphatische Polyisocyanate, aromatische Polyisocyanate, alicyclische Polyisocyanate
und heterocyclische Polyisocyanate, einschließlich solche wie z.B. Ithylen-diisocyanat, Äthyliden-diisoc3ranät,
Propylen-diisocyanat, Butylen-diisocyanat, Cyclopentylen-1, 3-diisocyanat,
Cyclohexylen-1,4-diisocyanat, Cyclohexylen-1,2-diisocyanat,
2,4-Toluol-diisoeyanat ,>

insbesondere ein Isomerengemisch aus 80$ 2,4-'
Toluol—diisocyanat und 20^ 2,6-Toluol-diisocyanat, bevorzugt.
Die folgenden Beispiele repräsentieren einige der besten erfindungsgemäßen
Ausführungsformen. Falls nichts anderes angegeben

Beispiel 1
(A) Herstellung eines ungesättigten Polyätherglycols (Macromonomer
) .
Ein Polypropylenätherglycol wird nach dem Verfahren der US
Patentschrift Nr. 3 654 224 hergestellt.
In ein geschlossenes Reaktionsgefäß gibt man "bei 4,44 C (40 P)
1500 g Propylenoxyd, 2 g Znv(CoCNg)2-Dimethoxyäthan-Komplex
und 232 g Maleinsäure. Die Temperatur wird allmählich auf 76,7°C (17O0F) erhöht und hei dieser Temperatur wird v/eitergerührt
his der ursprüngliche Druck im Reaktionsgefäß auf
0,35 - 0,70 kg/cm (5-10 psi) abgefallen ist. An diesem Punkt werden weitere I5OO g Propylenoxyd im Verlaufe von 2 Stunden
zugegeben und man rührt nochmals 3 Stunden lang v/eiter. Das Polyätherglycol hat, nach Entfernung der flüchtigen Materialien
bei 93,3°C (2000P) im Vakuum, eine Hydroxylzahl von 76,75 mg
KOH/g, was einem durchschnittlichen Molekulargewicht von I46O
entspricht.' Versuche, die Propylenoxydpolymerisation mit dem
Kaliumsalz der Maleinsäure zu initiieren, waren erfolglos.
(B) Copolymerisation mit Vinylchlorid.
125 g des obigen Polyätherglycols, 25 g Vinylchlorid, 0,5 g Azo-bisisobutyronitril, 90 ml Benzol und 10 ml Tetrachlorkohlenstoff
v/erden in einen Polymerisationskolben eingetragen, der 24 Stunden lang in einem Bad von konstanter Temperatur
bei 8O0C gedreht wird. Man entfernt das Lösungsmittel und
nicht umgesetztes Monomeres im Vakuum und erhält eine homogene viskose Flüssigkeit mit einer Hydroxylzahl von 58,5 mg KOH/g
und einer Säurezahl von 1,5 mg KOH/g, was einem durchschnittlichen Äquivalent gewicht von 975 entspricht.
(C) Polyurethanfilme.
Aus dem ursprünglichen Polyäther und dem Copolymerisat werden
Filme gemäß folgendem Rezept hergestellt:

Die !Filme' werden, auf Glasplatten gegossen und 1 Stunde lang "
bei Raumtemperatur und anschließend 8 Stunden bei 10O0C in
einem Ofen mit Luftumwälzung gehärtet. Nach" dem Abkühlen zieht

Man" erhält ein gesättigtes Pölypropylenäthersuccinat, wenn
Bernsteinsäure anstelle von Maleinsäure als Initiator für die Propylenbxydpölymerisatlon verwendet v/ird. Behandelt man
dieses Glycol mit Vinylchlorid und einem Radikalinitiätor
in Anwesenheit eines Kettenübertragungsmittels unter den gleichen Bedingungen wie unter 1 (B), so erhält man nur heterogene
Dispersionen von Polyvinylchlorid im Glycol.
Aus diesen Dispersionen und 2DI werden in der gleichen Weise
wie zuvor Polyurethanfilme hergestellt. Die erhaltenen ]?ilme
sind extrem schwach und brüchig.

Ein Maleat-KLyprorylenätherglycol mit einem durchschnittlichen
Molekulargewicht von 1240 (Hydroxylzahl = 90,5 mg KOH/g)
wird nach dem Verfahren des Beispieles 1(A) hergestellt.
Dieses Polyätherglycol (403 g) wird mit Vinylchlorid (60 g)
in Anwesenheit von Tetrachlorkohlenstoff (100 ml) und Azo-; bisisobutyronitril (0,6 g) in einem■ verschlossenen Polymerisationskarben
beiτ 60 C 24 Stunden lang copolymer!siert. Das
resultierende Copolymerisat ist eine klare Paste, die 44$
Vinylchlorid enthält.
Feuchtgehärtete Filme, hergestellt aus diesem Glycol und 80/20 Toluol-diisocyanat, haben die folgenden Eigenschaften:

Beispiel 3
Der Polyäther des Beispieles 1(A) (100 g) wird mit Methacrylnitril
(20 g) bei 8Ö°C 24 Stunden lang in Anwesenheit von Azo-tosisobutyronitril (0,4 g) und 100 ml einer 10:90 Mischung
aus Tetrachlorkohlenstoff und Benzol copolymerisiert. Das
resultierende kremig weiße viskose Material hat eine Hydroxylzahl von 57,8 mg KOH/g und eine Säurezahl von 0,79 mg KOH/g.
Ein aus diesem Polyol nach dem Verfahren und der Rezeptur des
Beispieles 1(C) hergestellter Film hat ein Modul (bei 300$

Dehnung) von 21,31 kg/cm (303 psi), eine Zugfestigkeit von
104,73 kg/cm (1490 psi), eine Dehnung von Λ83^.und eine a
Zerreißfestigkeit von 22,3 kg/cm (127 pli).
(A) ■
Ein Polypropylenätherglycol, das eine Itaconateinheit pro
Mol Polyäther enthält, wird gemäß Beispiel 1 hergestellt,
indem man Itaconsäure (130 g), Propylenoxyd (1870 g) und Zink-eobaiticyanid (1,0 g) in Tetrahydrofuran (1000 g)
12 Stunden lang bei 50 C umsetzt. Die resultierende viskose
Flüssigkeit hat eine Hydroxylzahl von 55,8 mg KOH/g, was
einem Glycol mit einem Molekulargewicht von 2000 entspricht.
(B) Copolymerisation mit Acrylnitril.
120 g von dem obigen Polyäther, 3Ö g Acrylnitril, 0,3 g Azobisisobutyronitril
und 1,5 g Trichlortirommethan werden in
einen PolymerisationskolTDen eingetragen. Der Kolben wird verschlossen
und 24 Stunden lang in ein Bad von konstanter Temperatur bei 80 C gestellt. Nach der Entfernung der flüchtigen
Bestandteile "bei 70 G unter vermindertem Druck bleiben
140 g einer orangefarbenen, klaren viskosen Flüssigkeit zurück, die die folgenden Eigenschaften hat.

(Beispiel 4(B)) und einem üblichen im Handel erhältlichen Polypropylenäthertriol, das ein Zahlenmittel-Molekulargewicht
von etwa 3000 hat (Poly G-3O3O PG, Olin Mathieson),
hergestellt. Die Pormulierungen und Tragfähigkeitseigenschaften der erhaltenen Schäume sind in der folgenden Tabelle angegeben:

Ein Polyäther, der im Durchschnitt eine Maleateinheit pro
Molekül enthält, wird hergestellt, indem man Polypropylenätherglycol
mit einem durchschnittlichen Molekulargewicht

von 425 (2MoIe) mit Maleinsäureanhydrid (1 Mol) verestert.
Das resultierende Diol (80 g) wird mit Vinylchlorid (20 g)
in Anwesenheit von 200 ml CGI. als Kettenübertragungsmittel
copolymerisiert. Man erhält nur partiell vernetzte weiche G-ele. Dieses Beispiel zeigt, daß eine übliche thermische Polykondensate
onstechnik keine zufriedenstellenden Ausgangsmaterialien
(Macromonomere) ergibt, die im Rahmen der vorliegenden
Erfindung brauchbar wären. ·

'80 g Polypropylenätherglycol mit einem durchschnittlichen MoXekulargewicht

= I5OO cps bei 20 G, daseine Itaconateinheit pro Polyäthermolekül
enthält und unter den Bedingungen und mit dem Katalysatorsystem des Beispieles 4(A) hergestellts wird mit
20 g Acrylnitril bei 500G 24 Stunden lang in Anwesenheit von
Triäthylamin (1,06 g) als Kettenübertragungsmittel (Initiator:
0,2 g Azo-bisisobutyronitril) copolymerisiert".
Nach Zugabe eines Antioxydants (0,1 g Di-2,6-tert.-butylphenol)
und Entfernung der flüchtigen Materialien erhält man 90 g
einer viskosen (29 QOO cps bei 2O0C) homogenen gelben Flüssigkeit
mit folgenden Eigenschaften: ■

einem im Handel erhältlichen POlyprbpylenätherglycQl, -M-3000
(Poly G-3030 PG, Qlin Mathieson) hergestellt worden sind,

Lineare Quellung in 45 Toluol nach 24-stündigem Eintauchen
Beispiel 7
Propylenoxyd wird in Anwesenheit von Itaconsäure und gemäß Beispiel 1 polymerisiert. Das erhaltene Glycol hat eine
Hydroxylzahl von 76 mg KOH/g, was einem Durchschnittsmolekulargewicht
von 1470 entspricht.
40 g von diesem Polypropylenätheritacenat werden mit 60 g Styrol
in 100 ml Tetrachlorkohlenstoff unter Verwendung von 0,6 g Azo-bisisobutyronitril als Initiator 24 Stunden lang bei 60 C
copolysnerisiert. Entfernung des Lösungsmittels im Vakuum ergibt
eine niedrigschmelzende weiche Festsubstanz mit einer Hydroxylzahl von 32,8 mg KOH/g.
Eeuchtgehärtete Polyurethanfilme werden aus dem ursprünglichen
Polypropylenätheritaconat (Beispiel 7(A)), sowie dem styrol-

modifizierten Polyol"(Beispiel 7(B)) 'und TDI (UCO./QH = 2,2)
hergestellt und getestet. Man erhält die folgenden Eigenschaften: ■■-■'-. ■

Ein Film, hergestellt aus einer physikalischen Mischung von
Polystyrol, das das gleiche Molekulargewicht wie Polypropylenätheritaconat hat, und TDI ergibt unter den gleichen Bedingungen
nur einen sehr schwachen heterogenen Film.
Das in Beispiel 7 hergestellte Polypropylenätheritaconat (40 g) wird mit 60 g Methylmethacrylat in 100 ml Benzol unter Verwendung
von 0,6 g Azo-bisisobutyronitril als Initiator copolymer!
siert.
Nach 24 Stunden bei 60 C erhält man eine klare halbfeste Substanz,
die in Toluol löslich ist und eine Hydroxylzahl von 29,7 mg KOH/g hat. ' '!
Ein feuchtgehärtet et Polyurethanfilm,, der aus diesem Polyol
(1 Äquivalent) und TDI (2 Äquivalente) hergestellt worden ist, hat eine Zugfestigkeit von 246 kg/cm (3500- (psi); eine Dehnung
von 50^; eine &raves-Zerreißfestigkeit von 87,5 kg/cm (497 pli)
und einen Fließpunkt bei 316 kg/cm .(4500 psi)'.

Claims (2)
- CASE: GT-718-PPATENTANSPRÜCHEVerfahren zur Herstellung eines Polyurethanschaumes, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß(A) ein organisches Polyisocyanat und(B) das Copolymei'isat aus(a) einem polymerisierbaren organischen Vinylmonomeren mit entv/eder einer Doppelbindung oder zwei konjugierten Doppelbindungen und(b) einem hydroxylhaltigen Comonomer, das im wesentlichenaus einem ungesättigten Polyalkylenäther-Macromonomer besteht, das ein Aquivalentgewiclrt -vom e-twa 100 bis 3000 hat und dac 1 bis 3 Hydroxylgruppen und eine cdpolymerisierbare Unsättigung pro Molekül aufweist;chemisch umgesetzt werden und der Polyurethanschaum gewonnen wird.
