Description
Verbesserungen bei Schmiermitteladditiven
Die vorliegende Erfindung bezieht sich auf Schmiermitteladditive, insbesondere auf bestimmte neue Verbindungen,
die bei der Herstellung von Schmiermitteladditiven brauchbar sind.
Unter den zahlreichen Arten von Additiven, die in Schmiermittelgemischen, insbesondere, aber nicht
ausschließlich Automobilschmiermitteln verwendet werden, sind verschiedene oberflächenaktive Materialien. Beispielsweise
Dispergierungsmittel, insbesondere aschefreie Dispergierungsmittel, werden in Schmiermitteln

leibt, um Kohlenstoffteilchen und andere unlösliche
Materialien, wie Zersetzungsprodukte und Brennstoffoxydationsprodukte im ölmedium, das der größere Bestandteil
der Schmiermittel ist, zu dispergieren. Die un-
deshalb
löslichen Materialien werdenYln dem ölmedium , suspendiert
und werden daran gehindert, Niederschläge zu bilden, die in schädlicher Weise in den Betrieb der
Maschine eingreifen. Oberflächenaktive Mittel erfüllen eine andere Aufgabe bei der Verwendung von überbasischen
Prozeßen,bei denen eine Suspension oder Dispersion einer Metallverbindung, besonders einer Erdalkalimetallverbindung,
wie Calcium-, Barium- oder Magnesiumoxid oder -hydroxid, mit einem sauren Gas, wie Kohlendioxid
behandelt wird.
Während derartiger Prozeße wird ein oberflächenaktives
Material, das gewöhnlich als Seife bezeichnet wird, verwendet, um eine stabile Suspension des Metalles,
beispielsweise in Form des Carbonates in den erhaltenen Additiven zu bilden. Die Additive sind basisch, oft
sehr hoch-basisch mit totalen Basiszahlen von bis zu 400 oder 500 mg KOH/g und sogar höher und werden verwendet,
um die sauren Verbrennungsprodukte, die sich in der Maschine bilden, zu neutralisieren.
Unter den oberflächenaktiven Materialien, die für die oben erwähnten Zwecke verwendet werden, sind verschiedene Alkylsalicylsäurederivate.
Es wurden jetzt bestimmte neue Verbindungen gefunden,

die.eine gewisse Ähnlichkeit im Hinblick auf die.chemische
Struktur mit den bekannten Salicylatderivaten haben und die.als Schmiermitteladditve brauchbar sind.
Demgemäß stellt die vorliegende Erfindung eine Verbindung
zur Verfügung, die ein Kondensationsprodukt ist aus :
i) einem Alkyl-substituierten einwertigen Phenol, Phenolsülfid
oder Alkylen-bisphenol, wobei der Alkylsubstituent
mindestens 8 C-Atome enthält, und ii)einer Garbonyl-substituierten Verbindung, und zwar
Glyoxylsäure, Brenztraubensäure, Lävulinsäure, 3-Oxoglutarsäure, 2-Oxoglutarsäure oder Ester derartiger
Sauren. Der Ausdruck einwertiges Phenol schließt einwertige Phenole mit einem Alkylsübstituenten
neben dem oben erwähnten Alkylsübstituenten, der mindestens 8 C-Atome enthält, ein.

Die Reste R in den Verbindungen der obigen Formeln (A)
und (B) oder im Falle der oben definierten Kondensationsprodukte können die Alkylreste, die sich von dem
Alkyl-substituierten einwertigen Phenol, Phenolsulfid
oder Alkylen-bis-Phenol ableiten, vergleichsweise
kurzkettige Alkylreste, wie Octyl, Nonyl oder Dodecyl,
sein. Alternativ können diese Alkylreste vergleichsweise langkettige Reste, die mindestens 30, vorzugsweise
mindestens 50 C-Atome enthalten, sein. Um jedoch den gewünschten Grad an ^!löslichkeit zu schaffen, ist
es notwendig, daß die Zahl der C-Atome in jeder dieser Alkylreste mindestens 8 betragt. Um die gewünschten
Dispergierungseigenschaften zu schaffen, enthalten die
Alkylreste vorzugsweise mindestens 18 C-Atome und für diesen Zweck werden vergleichsweise langkettige Alkylreste
bevorzugt! Nach dieser Ausführungsform können
die Alkylreste beispielsweise 50 - 2Ό0 C-Atome enthalten,
In derartigen Fällen können sich die Alkylreste von langkettigen Olefinen, wie einem Poly-fc^-olefin) ableiten,
das ein Molekulargewicht im Bereich von 7OO bis 3OOO, bevorzugter 9OO - 15OO und besonders etwa lOOO
aufweist. Beispiele geeigneter Poly-fe^-olefine) sind
Polyisobutylene und Polypropylene.
Ira Falle der oben definierten Kondensationsprodukte
kann das Alkyl-substituierte phenolische~Ausgangsmaterial
einen oder mehrere zusätzliche Substituenten an dem aromatischen Ring tragen und diese entsprechen

Die vorliegende Erfindung schließt auch Verfahren zur Herstellung der neuen Substanzen ein. Die Erfindung
schließt demgemäß ein Verfahren ein, bei dem ein Alkylsubstituiertes
einwertiges Phenol, Phenolsulfid oder Alkylen-bis-Phenol ', in dem der Alkylsubstituent
mindestens 8 C-Atome enthält, mit einer Carbonyl-substituierten Verbindung, und zwar Glyoxylsäure, Brenztraubensäure,
Lavulinsäure, 3-Oxoglutarsäure, 2-0xoglutarsäure
oder Ester derartiger Säuren, kondensiert wird. Nach einem bevorzugten Gesichtspunkt umfaßt das Verfahren
die Kondensation eines Alkyl-substituierten einwertigen Phenoles, Phenolsulfides oder Alkylen-bis-Phenoles
der Formel:

Bei diesem Verfahren wird das erhaltene Produkt durch
die Auswahl der Reaktionspartner und die verwendeten

durch den gewählten phenoiischen Reaktionspartner bestimmt. R wird beispielsweise durch den Alkyl-Substituenten
bestimmt und die Produkte, in denen R abwesend ist, können aus phenolischen Reaktionspartnern
mit keinem Substituenten mit Ausnahme des Alkylsubstituenten hergestellt werden. In gleicher ]Weise können

Die bei dem Verfahren der vorliegenden Erfindung verwendeten
Reaktionsparther sind in vielen Fällen kommerziell erhältliche Materialien, beispielsweise Glyoxylsäure.
Die übrigen können leicht unter Verwendung gut bekannter Methoden hergestellt werden, beispielsweise
können Poly-(oC-^olef in)-substituierte Phenole durch
Alkylierung von Phenolen mit Poly-(oC-olefinen) hergestellt
werden*
Das Verfahren der vorliegenden Erfindung kann 'unter
Bedingungen durchgeführt werden, die über einen weiten Bereich schwanken. Beispielsweise kann eine Temperatur
von Umgebungstemperatur bis zu 150°C oder sogar höher verwendet werden. Eine bevorzugte Reaktionstemperatur
betragt 60 - 120°C. Ebenso ist der brück, bei dem die Kondensation durchgeführt wird, nicht kritisch» Atmosphärischer
Druck ist geeignetf aber erhöhte oder
verminderte Drucke können auch angewandt werden.
Nach einer bevorzugten Äüsführühgsform des Verfahrens
wird die-Kondensation in einer inerten Atmosphäre>

spielsweise unter einer Stickstoffglocke durchgeführt.
Eine sehr wünschenswerte Variation der Kondensation besteht in der Durchführung der Reaktion in saurem >
Medium. Dies kann getan werden,, indem die Reaktion ist
Anwesenheit einer Säure, beispielsweise Schwefelsäure,
p—Toluolsuifonsäure ader einem Gemisch von Salzsäure
und Essigsaure durchgeführt wird* Im Falle einer SäureF wie p-Töluolsulfonsäure, wird
bevorzugtf die Reaktion bei vergleichsweise hoher
Temperatur, beispielsweise lOO — 12O°C oder unter Rückfluß
durchzuführen. Dieses Verfahren ist besonders wirksam, wenn Glyoxyl- oder Brenztraubensäure oder
deren Ester als Carbonylreaktionspartner verwendet werden. Im Fall einer Mineralsäure, wie Schwefelsäure
wird jedoch eine etwas niedrigere Reaktionstemperatur bevorzugt, beispielsweise 60 - 90°C und eine derartige
Prozedur ist mit Lävulinsäure, 2-Oxoglutarsäure und
3-Oxoglutarsäure und deren Estern v/irksamer befunden
worden.
Ein inertes Lösungsmittel kann auch gewünschtenfalls verwendet werden. Beispiele solcher Lösungsmittel sind
Benzol, Chlorbenzol, Toluol, Xylole, Petrolather und Mineralöl. Bevorzugte Lösungsmittel sind jene, die ein
/izeotrop mit Wasser bilden, das bei der Kondensation hergestellt wird. Die Verwendung derartiger Lösungsmittel
ermöglicht, das Wasser durch azeotrope Destillation im Verlaufe der Umsetzung kontinuierlich zu entfernen.
Der Ausdruck "Lösungsmittel", wie er hier ver-

.wendet wird, bezieht sich auf ein Lösungsmittel für
die' Phenol- und Carbonylverbindung-Reaktionspartner, Es ist für das Lösungsmittel nicht notwendig, die Säure
zu lösen, wenn die Kondensation in einem sauren Medium
durchgeführt wird. Eine sehr brauchbare Lösungsmittel/
Säure-Mediumkombination ist beispielsweise Petroläther
und wässrige Schwefeisäure. Diese Kombination.schafft
ein Zwei-Phasen-Reaktionssystem. Ein-Phasen-Reaktionssysteme können auch verwendet werden; ein brauchbares
Beispiel, dafür, ist in Chlorbenzol gelöste Essigsäure.
Nach den obigen allgemeinen Formeln (A) und (B) können Verbindungen, die Laktonringe wie in (B) enthalten,
aus der weiteren Kondensation der phenolischen Hydroxylgruppen
mit Carboxylgruppen, die sich von der Verwendung einer Carbonyl-substituierten Carbonsäure ableiten,
hergestellt werden, um den inneren cyclischen Ester zu bilden.1 Die Produkte der vorliegenden Erfindung
können bei der Herstellung von Schmiermitteladditiven verwendet werden, wie das beispielsweise in der schwebenden
britischen Patentanmeldung 19 173/73 beschrieben wird. Die folgenden Beispiele erläutern die Erfindung.
3340 g Polyisobutylen mit einem .Molekulargewicht von
1000 wurden mit 2,4 Litern Hexan gemischt. Zu der erhaltenen Lösung wurde langsam ein Komplexgemisch von
Phenol und Bortrifluorid, das vorher durch Behandlung

von 846 g geschmolzenem Phenol mit 122 g Bortrifluorid
hergestellt worden war, gegeben. Während der Zugabe wurde das Reaktionsgemisch unter Stickstoffatmosphäre
gerührt und durch äußere Kühlung auf 18 - 2O°C gehalten.
Nach der vollständigen Zugabe wurde das Gemisch weitere 3 Stunden bei 18 - 20°C gerührt. Der Bortrifluoridkatalysator
wurde aus dem Gemisch als Ammoniumfluorborat
durch Zugabe von Airanoniumhydroxid (spezifisches Gewicht = O,88O) ausgefällt und durch Filtration entfernt.
Das Lösungsmittel wurde anschließend durch Destillation entfernt und das überschüssige Phenol durch
Dampfdestillation entfernt. Die Titration der phenolischen Hydroxylgruppe gegen Tetrabutylammoniumhydroxid
wies auf ein Produkt hin, das ein Äquivalentgewicht von 990 hatte. .
Umsetzung von p-Nonylphenol mit Glyoxylsäure in Gegenwart von p-Toluolsulfonsäure
Eine Lösung von Nonylphenol (0,1 m, 22 g), Glyoxylsäuremonohydrat
(0,05 m, 4,6 g) und p-Toluolsulfonsäure (0,3 g) in Toluol (50 ml) wurde 4 Stunden unter Rückflußtemperatur
erhitzt. Wasser, das sich während der Umsetzung entwickelte, wurde kontinuierlich durch azeotrope
Destillation entfernt. Das Lösungsmittel wurde unter vermindertem Druck durch Destillation entfernt.
Das Produkt war eine viskose tiefrote Flüssigkeit,

Hexan und Wasser verdünnt worden war, wurde das Gemisch
stehengelassen, bis eine Phasentrennung auftrat. Die Kohlenwasserstoff phase v/urde anschließend mehrmals mit
Wasser gewaschen, um Schwefelsäure zu entfernen, über wasserfreies Magnesiumsulfat getrocknet und unter vermindertem
Druck abgestreift, um das Lösungsmittel zu entfernen. Die Acidität des Produktes betrug 31 mg
KOH/g. .
Herstellung von p-Polyisobutylphenol.
2100 g (1,0 Mol) Polyisobutylen mit einem Molekulargewicht von 2100 wurden mit 1,7 Litern Hexan gemischt.
Zu der erhaltenen Lösung wurde langsam ein Komplexgemisch
von Phenol und Bortrifluorid, das vorher hergestellt worden war durch Behandlung von 254 g geschmolzegegeben.

1 1/2 Stunden in Anspruch und die Temperatur stieg von 22 auf 27°C. Das Gemisch wurde weitere 3 Stunden
gerührt, wobei die Temperatur um ein weiteres Grad Celsius stieg. Der Bortrifluoridkatalysator v/urde aus
dem Gemisch durch Zugabe des Ammoniumhydroxids (spezifisches Gewicht = 0,88O) ausgefällt. Der Niederschlag
und das überschüssige Phenol wurden durch Waschen der
Hexanlösung hintereinander mit 3,0, 2,0, 1,2 und O,7

Litern Wasser/Methanol (1:4) gewaschen. Schließlich
wurde die Lösung durch Vakuum-Abstreifen bei 150°C
abdestilliert. Die Titration der phenolischen Hydroxidgruppe
gegen Tetrabutylainmoniumhydroxid wies auf ein Produkt hin, das ein Äquivalentgewicht von 2462 hatte.
Das Polypropylen, das zur Herstellung verwendet wurde,
war ein solches mit einem Molekulargewicht von 840.
Das verwendete Verfahren wurde in Beispiel 6 angegeben.

Das Lösungsmittel wurde durch Destillation entfernt und das überschüssige O-Kresol wurde durch Vakuum-Abstreifen
bei 2OO°C/5 ml Hg-Säule entfernt. Die Analyse wies auf ein Produkt hin, das ein Äquivalentgewicht
von 1334 aufwies. —

Die Umsetzungen wurden nach der folgenden allgemeinen Methode durchgeführt. Die Details der einzelnen Beispiele
sind in der Tabelle angegeben.
Eine Lösung des Alkylphenols, Glyoxylsäuremonohydrats
und der p-Toluolsulfonsäure,(PTSS) wurde im Lösungsmittel unter Rückflußtemperatur erhitzt. Wasser, das
sich während der Umsetzung bildete, wurde durch azeotrope Destillation kontinuierlich entfernt. Als die Entwicklung
aufgehört hatte, wurde die Lösung filtriert und das Lösungsmittel unter vermindertem Druck durch
Destillation entfernt. Die Produkte waren im allgemeinen tiefrote viskose Flüssigkeiten.

Stellungen bildeten/ lassen vermuten,- daß das CarbpxylsMureprodTikt
teilweise in-die .Laktohform umgewandelt
wurde. Das läßt sich auch an den Säurewerten ersehen,

berechneten Werte lagen, IR-Spektren, die eine breite
Bande bei 1770 - 1820 cm enthielten, lassen ein ^Überwiegen des Laktpns vermuten.
Das C,.-C^o^Phenol/ auf das in der Tabelle hingewiesen

Öas Polyisobuty!phenol wurde aus Polyisobutylen mit
einem Molekulargewicht, von 440 nach der in Beispiel 6
angegebenen Methode, hergestellt.
Die Umsetzung wurde analog Beispiel 22 durchgeführt mit der Ausnähme, daß in diesem Fall diö Reaktionszeit
46 Stmnden betifug. Ein viskoses Pifodukt einer Acidität
von 40 ittg KOi/g wurde erhalten und die IK-Anälyse
zeigte die erwartete stäifke Absorption bei 171o cm" ,
die auf eine Saurefunktion hinweist.
Beiispiel

Umsetzung von Mony!phenol mit Butylgiyoicylat.
Eine Lösung von Sönylphenol (Ö>3 m, 66,0 g)>
f Butylglyoxyiat (0,15 m, 19,5 g} und PTSS (0/1 g>
in Hexan (75 ml) wurde stff Rückflußtemperatur erhitzt. Wasser/

das sich während der Reaktion bildete, wurde durch azeotrope Destillation kontinuierlich entfernt.
Nach 1 1/2 Stunden waren 2,5 ml gewonnen (berechnet: 2,7 ml) und die Entwicklung, schien aufzuhören. Die
Lösung wurde anschließend abfiltriert und das Lösungsmittel durch Destillation unter reduziertem Druck bei
30°C entfernt.
Die IR-Analyse zeigte starke Absorptionen bei 1715 cm
und 1770 - 1820 cm"1. (Die Carbonylabsorption für
Butylglyoxylat wurde bei 1760 cm ,gefunden).
Es hatte daher den Anschein, daß die gewünschte Konden-
; ;-; dann
sation stattgefunden hatte, aber daßVeine weitere Umsetzung stattgefunden hatte, um ein Gemisch von
Säure- und Lakton-Derivaten zu erhalten. Die Acidität des Produktes betrug 66 mg KOH/g.
Der vorgeschlagene Reaktionsweg wird wie folgt veranschaulicht:

Eine weitere Herstellung, die mit einem höher siedenden· Lösungsmittel, Toluol, durchgeführt wurde, gab
ein Produkt, das nur im- Lakton-Bereich absorbierte..

Ein Gemisch von Dodecylphenol (1,0 m, 262 g), Schwefel (1,0 m, 32 g) und Natriumhydroxid (8 g) wurde unter
Rühren und unter Stickstoff auf 160°C erhitzt, bis die Entwicklung des Schwefelwasserstoffes aufhörte
(42 Stunden). Das Natriumhydroxid wurde mit 10 ml Phosphorsäure (spezifisches Gewicht = 1,75) neutralisiert und das Gemisch anschließend abfiltriert. %S des
Produktes =5,85 (berechnet =5,8).
Eine Lösung von bis-Dodecylphenolsulfid, wie in Beispiel 24 hergestellt, (0,12 m, 66,5 g), Glyoxylsäuremonohydrat
(0,06 m, 5,5 g) und PTSS (0,1 g) in Xylol

(50ml) wurde unter Rückflußtemperatur erhitzt. Das
entwickelte Wasser wurde kontinuierlich durch azeotrope
Destillation gewonnen. Nachdem! 1,5 ml gesammelt worden
waren, schien die Entwicklung aufzuhören,und die Lösung
wurde filtriert und vom Lösungsmittel abgestreift.
Das analysierte Produkt war folgendes: Acidität = 66 mg KOH/g
%S ■ =5,4 (berechnet = 5,4)

Die IR-Analyse zeigte eine breite Absorption bei

1680 cm - 1820 cm , die Absorption war .am intensiv-
sten im sauren Bereich (1700 cm ) und dem Laktonbereich
(1800cm"1}.

PTSS 0,1 g
Xylol 50 ml
1,9 ml Wasser wurden gesaminelt. Das Produkt ergab'
eine Acidität von 7ö und die IR-Analyse zeigte die
erwartete Laktonabsorption im 1800 cm~ -Bereich.

4. Verbindung gemäß Anspruch 1-3,dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß Z abwesend ist und
R ein Alkylrest oder ein Rest der Formel -CH - R ist,

in der R ein Wasserstoffatom oder ein Alkylrest und
R ein Aryl- oder Alkarylrest, der mindestens einen Hydroxylsubstituenten enthält, ist.
5-. Verbindung gemäß Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß R ein kurzkettiger Alkylrest, der 1-8 C-Atome enthält, ist.
6. Verbindung gemäß Anspruch 1-3,dadurch
gekennzeichnet, daß Z ein Schwefelatom oder eine Kette mit 2-4 Schwefelatomen ist und R
ein Aryl- oder Alkarylrest, der einen Hydroxylsubstituenten
trägt, ist.
7. Produkt, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß es ein Kondensationsprodukt aus

(i) einem Alkyl-substituierten einwertigen Phenol,
Phenolsulfid oder Alkylen-bis-Phenol, in dem der Alkylsubstituent mindestens 8 C-Atome enthält,
und
(ii)einer Carbonyl-substituierten Verbindung, und
zwar Glyoxylsäure, Brenztraubensäure, Lävulinsäure, 3-Oxoglutarsäure, 2-Öxoglutarsäure oder den Estern
derartiger Säuren, ist.
8. Verfahren, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß ein Alkyl-substituiertes einwertiges Phenol,
Phenolsulfid oder Alkylen-bis-Phenol, worin der Alkylsubstituent mindestens -8 C-Atome enthält, mit einer
Carbonyl-substituierten Verbindung, und zwar Glyoxylsäure, Brenztraubensäure, Lävulinsäure, 3-Öxoglutarsäure,
2-Oxog.lutarsäure oder den Estern derartiger Säuren, kondensiert wird.
9. Verfahren gemäß Anspruch 8, dadurch g e kennzeichnet,
daß ein Alkyl-substituiertes einwertiges Phenol, Phenolsulfid oder Alkylen-bis-Phenol
