Aus der USA.-Patentschrift 2 691 605 ist die Herstellung von Siliciumcarbidartikeln bekannt, gemäß
der man auf einen kohlenstoffhaltigen Grundkörper, der aus Mischungen von Sägespänen, Mehl, Ruß und
dergleichen besteht, bei erhöhten Temperaturen elementares Silicium in Dampfform zur Einwirkung
bringt, wodurch Siliciumcarbid in situ entsteht und dann einen Gasstrom unter Druck auf den fertig
silicierten Körper bläst, um ihn porös zu machen.
Die nach diesem bekannten Verfahren hergestellten Produkte können nicht bearbeitet werden, weil sie
viel zu hart sind. Demgemäß muß die Formgebung dort an dem Vorkörper, d. h. vor der Einlagerung des
Siliciums, vorgenommen werden. Diese Vorkörper können aber mit Werkzeugmaschinen auch nicht
zufriedenstellend bearbeitet werden, weil sie sehr zerbrechlich sind. Dieser Umstand beschränkt das
Verfahren des USA.-Patentes auf die Herstellung von Gegenständen mit verhältnismäßig einfacher Raumform.
Dieser schwerwiegende Nachteil des entgegengehaltenen Verfahrens beruht darauf, daß Einlagerung
und Carbidbildung gleichzeitig verlaufen.
Aufgabe der Erfindung ist nun die Herstellung von harten Carbidformkörpern mit genau vorherbestimmbaren
Abmessungen, die auch kompliziertere Formen aufweisen können und z. B. als Schneidwerkzeuge für
die Metallbearbeitung bei hohen Tourenzahlen gut geeignet sind.
Der Erfindung liegt die Erkenntnis zugrunde, daß man, wenn man in einen durchlässigen Vorkörper
aus Kohlenstoff eine flüssige Legierung einlagert und erstarren läßt, einen gefüllten Vorkörper erhält, der
stabil genug ist, um spanend verformt werden zu können, und daß der so auf die Endform gebrachte
Körper durch Erhitzen auf hohe Temperaturen in einen Mctallcarbidformkörper gleicher Abmessungen
umgewandelt werden kann.
Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zur Herstellung eines Formkörpers, der mindestens eine
harte, .hochschmelzende Phase aus in situ gebildetem Carbid enthält, das dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, daß
man
(a) in einen durchlässigen Vorkörper, der Kohlenstoff enthält, ein metallisches Material in flüssiger
Phase einlagert, das mindestens ein als Carbidbildner geeignetes Element, das mit dem Vorkörper'
unter Bildung einer harten, hochschmelzenden Phase reagiert, und zusätzlich mindestens
ein Element enthält, das den Schmelzpunkt des Carbidbildners erniedrigt, wobei die Einlagerung
bei einer Temperatur oberhalb des Schmelzpunktes des metallischen Materials und unterhalb
derjenigen Temperatur, bei der eine merkliche Reaktion zwischen dem Carbidbildner und dem
Vorkörper vonstatten geht, erfolgt,
(b) die Einlagerung in den Vorkörper so lange fortsetzt, bis praktisch die Poren des Vorkörpers bis
mindestens in eine wesentliche Tiefe gefüllt sind,
(c) den Vorkörper nach dem Abkühlen zur endgültigen Form verarbeitet und schließlich
(d) den Formkörper einer Temperatur aussetzt, bei welcher das harte, hochschmelzende Carbid gebildet
wird.
Vorzugsweise setzt man dem geschmolzenen metallischen Material vor der Einlagerung ein Flußmittel
zu. Die Einlagerung wird vorzugsweise im Vakuum oder bei normalem Druck in einer Schutzgasatmosphäre
durchgeführt.
Das Verfahren gemäß der Erfindung bietet den Vorteil, daß es gleichmäßige Formkörper aus Carbid
von praktisch unbegrenztem Formenreichtum ohne Anwendung pulvermetallurgischer Arbeitsweisen Hefert.
Zu den verschiedenartigen, wertvollen Formkörpern,; die erfindungsgemäß erhältlich sind, gehören
beispielsweise kohlenstoffhaltige poröse Körper, deren Poren bis zu einer wesentlichen Tiefe (das heißt nicht
is vollständig) mit carbidbildendem Material gefüllt, zu
der gewünschten, endgültigen Form verarbeitet und dann iwärmebehandelt worden sind, wodurch poren-.freie
Außenschichten bei poröser Innenstruktur gebildet! werden, oder kohlenstoffhaltige poröse Vorkörper,
deren Poren mit metallischem Material im wesentlichen gefüllt und die zu der gewünschten,
endgültigen Form verarbeitet und dann wärmebehandelt worden sind, wodurch man sehr harte, feste,
porenfreie Carbidformkörper erhält.
Die erfindungsgemäß erhältlichen Formkörper zeichnen sich durch verhältnismäßig große Härte aus.
Die Bestandteile der neuen Formkörper besitzen sowohl Nichtmetalleigenschaften als auch Metalleigenschaften.
Der in der Stufe (a) eingesetzte durchlässige Vorkörper kann beispielsweise aus im wesentlichen festen
Kohlenstoffgerüsten, porösem Kohlenstoff, Kohlenstoffpul'verteilchen, geschäumtem Kohlenstoff, Kohlenstoffaservliesen,
-tüchern oder -watte oder anderen kohlenstöffartigen bzw. -haltigen Stoffen gebildet sein.
Wird ,als Vorkörper beispielsweise ein Netzwerk aus Graphit verwendet, so können erfindungsgemäß Formkörper
(ζ. B. aus 45% Zirkoniumcarbid, 5% Urancarbid und 50% Graphit) hergestellt werden, die insbesondere
für den Reaktorbau von Wert sind.
Aus geschäumtem Kohlenstoff kann beispielsweise gemäß der Erfindung ein sehr harter Formkörper hergestellt
werden, der bei der Verwendung einer Eisen-Titan-Legierung als Einlagerungsmetall aus ungefähr
30% Titancarbid, 40% Eisen-Titan-Legierung und 30% nicht umgesetztem Kohlenstoff besteht.
Die Eigenschaften der Formkörper gemäß der Erfindung lassen sich in weiten Grenzen verändern,
indem man die Zusammensetzung des Einlagerungsmaterials, das Porenvolumen und die Oberfläche des
durchlässigen Vorkörpers, die Reaktionstemperaturen und die Reaktionszeiten entsprechend wählt. Hierdurch
kann hauptsächlich der Umsetzungsgrad des Kohlenstoffs variiert werden.
Im allgemeinen gehören zu den metallischen Einlagerungsmaterialien
für die Zwecke der Erfindung alle Materialien, die mindestens ein Element aufweisen,
dessen Gibbs-Potential bei den Temperatur- und Druckbedingungen der zur Carbidbildung führenden
Reaktion in der metallischen Lösung größer als in
* jeglicher Cärbidphase oder jeglichen Cabidphasen ist,
die zwischen allen Elementen des Systems möglich sind. Zum !Begriffe des Gibbs-Potentials, das unabhängig
von der zur Carbidbildung führenden Reaktion gemäß der Erfindung bestimmbar ist, wird auf
Guggenheim, »Thermodynamics«, North Holland
Publishing Co., verwiesen.

teiligte Elemente bleiben als metallische Bindephase für die Carbidteilchen zurück. Die Art des aktiven
Carbidbildners wie auch seine Menge können in weiteren Grenzen verändert werden. Man kann auch
eine Einlagerungslegierung anwenden, von welcher nach vollständiger Umsetzung nur eine Carbid-Phase
zurückbleibt. Man kann auf diesem Wege einen festen Carbidformkörper erhalten, der nach der Wärmeendbehandlung
keinerlei niedrigschmelzendes Bindemittel mehr enthält.
Das Verfahren gemäß der Erfindung ist nicht auf die Bildung eines einzelnen Carbids beschränkt. Man
kann auch Lösungen von einem oder mehreren Carbiden oder getrennte Carbidphasen bilden. Zum Beispiel
erhält man beim Arbeiten mit einer Einlagerungslegierung aus 30% Nickel und 70% Titan als Carbid
Titancarbid. Eine Legierung aus 35% Nickel, 55% Titan und 10% Molybdän ergibt eine Struktur, die
sowohl Titancarbid als auch Molybdäncarbid enthält.
Zur Herstellung eines Formkörpers mit einem Mittelkern aus Graphit und einer harten, carbidhaltigen
Außenschicht kann man einen durchlässigen Graphitvorkörper in eine Schmelze einer Legierung
aus 70% Titan und 30% Nickel tauchen. Eine 20 Minuten lange Einlagerung führt zur Imprägnierung der
Oberfläche des durchlässigen Vorkörpers. Dieser wird dann nach dem Abkühlen zu der gewünschten, endgültigen
Form verarbeitet und im Vakuum 20 Minuten lang auf 140O0C erhitzt.
Beim Einarbeiten mit einer Einlagerungslegierung bestimmt die Legierungszusammensetzung den
Schmelzpunkt. Es lassen sich viele, mindestens ein carbidbildendes Element enthaltende, wertvolle Einlagerungslegierungen
erhalten, deren Schmelzpunkte im Vergleich mit den metallischen Carbiden oder selbst mit dem nach der Umsetzung verbleibenden
Bindemetall sehr niedrig liegen. Eine Legierung aus 71 Gewichtsteilen Titan und 29 Gewichtsteilen Nickel
schmilzt bei ungefähr 9550C. Diese Temperatur liegt unter dem Schmelzpunkt des Titans (172O0C) wie
auch Nickels (1453° C). Diese Legierung kann bei etwa 1020° C in einen Graphitvorkörper eingelagert
werden. Die Umsetzung dieser Legierung mit dem Graphitvorkörper bei HOO0C führt zu Titancarbidteilchen,
die in einem Träger aus einer Nickel-Titan-Legierung verteilt sind.
Nach der in der Stufe (c) vorgenommenen endgültigen Verformung, z. B. durch spanende Bearbeitung,
werden die gefüllten Formkörper, vorzugsweise in einer Schutzatmosphäre oder im Vakuum, gemäß
der Stufe (d) auf eine Temperatur, bei welcher das harte, hochschmelzende Carbid gebildet wird, erhitzt.
Die Geschwindigkeit der Carbidbildung in der Stufe (d) wird insbesondere von der Temperatur und
der Art des eingelagerten metallischen Materials bestimmt. Sie nimmt mit der Temperatur und der Oberfläche
zu. Das harte, hochschmelzende Carbid kann sich auch bei einer Temperatur unterhalb des Schmelzpunktes
des in den Poren eingelagerten Metalls, also unterhalb der Einlagerungstemperatur, bilden, aber
die Carbidbildung verläuft schneller bei Temperaturen, bei denen das Metall mindestens teilweise flüssig ist.
In einem Versuch wurde eine Legierung aus 70 Gew.% Titan und 30 Gew.% Nickel in einem Graphittiegel
in einem Vakuumofen bei etwa 0,1 mm Hg Druck erschmolzen. Nach dem Schmelzen wurde in
is das geschmolzene Metall langsam ein Stück poröser
Filtergraphit (ungefähr 1,3 χ 1,3 χ 10,2 cm, Porosität
ungefähr 68%) eingetaucht. Das geschmolzene Metall, das auf einer Temperatur von ungefähr 12000C
gehalten wurde, benetzte das Graphitgerüst ohne Schwierigkeiten und lagerte sich in weniger als insgesamt
3 Minuten vollständig ein. Das Produkt konnte nach dem Abkühlen leicht mit einer Metallsäge gesägt
und anderen spanenden Bearbeitungen unterworfen werden. Aus dem eingelagerten Material geformte
Stücke wurden im Vakuum 6 Stunden bei 14000C wärmebehandelt. Diese Wärmebehandlung führte zur
Bildung feiner, in einer Nickellegierung eingebetteter Teilchen von Titancarbid.
Der Grad der Carbidbildung läßt sich an Hand der Menge des carbidbildenden Elementes in dem der
Einlagerung unterworfenen. Stück lenken. Man kann den gesamten Kohlenstoff umsetzen oder, wenn gewünscht,
einen Teil des Kohlenstoffs in dem Gefüge unverändert lassen. Beispielsweise kann bei der Herstellung
von Kernbrennelementen aus Uran-, Thorium- und Zirkoniumcarbid eine wesentliche Menge
an unverändertem Graphit als Neutronenmoderator erwünscht sein. Auch auf den Gebieten der Lagerwerkstoffe
und der elektrischen Kontakte sollen bei bestimmten Zwecken, z. B. Generatorbürsten, zur
Schmierung bzw. im Hinblick auf die elektrischen Eigenschaften große Mengen Graphit zurückbleiben.
Nach der Wärmebehandlung in der Stufe (d) ist
der Körper mit Ausnahme einer etwa noch gewünschten Enddimensionierung fertiggestellt.
Die tabellarisch dargestellten Beispiele sind der Einfachheit halber nach der Art des durchlässigen
Vorkörpers unterteilt. Es wurden die Art des Vorkörpers und des metallischen Einlagerungsmaterials,
die Bedingungen bei der Einlagerung und der Wärmebehandlung und die ungefähre Menge an in dem
Formkörper gebildeten Carbid angegeben.

Die erfindungsgemäße Einlagerung kann in verschiedener
Weise und unter Verwendung verschie-. dener Apparaturen erfolgen. Eine geeignete Vorrichtung
ist in »High Temperature Technology«, John Wiley, 1956, auf Seite 269 beschrieben. Da viele Einlagerungsstoffe
sehr oxydationsanfällig sind, kann es notwendig sein, einen gewissen Schutz zu schaffen, der
eine überstarke Oxydation und Schlackenbildung verhindert, die bei der Einlagerung zu Schwierigkeiten
führen könnte. Es muß darauf geachtet werden, daß Schlacke, die sich auf dem Einlagerungsmaterial bildet,
die Poren oder Zwischenräume des kohlenstoffhaltigen Vorkörpers nicht verschließt, damit ein Verstopfen
und ein Durchlässigkeitsverlust vermieden werden. Die Einlagerung wäre sonst ungenügend. Man
kann die Schlacke in einem Bereich, in dem der Vorkörper mit den Schmelzen zusammenzubringen
ist, mechanisch entfernen, aber gewöhnlich ist es notwendig, auf der geschmolzenen Legierung eine Flußmitteldecke
zu halten, um eine Oxydation bei Einlagerung eines geschmolzenen, metallischen Materials
unter Luftzutritt zu vermeiden. Es hat sich gezeigt, daß das Flußmittel auch die Benetzung des kohlenstoffhaltigen
Vorkörpers unterstützt. Das Flußmittel muß bei der Temperatur schmelzen, bei welcher die
Einlagerung erfolgen soll, und wenig flüchtig sein. Mit Erfolg wurden ein Gemisch von 50 Gew.% Natrium-
15 und 50 Gew.% Kaliumchlorid wie auch wasserfreies
Bariumchlorid verwendet, um Legierungen aus Kupfer und Titan, Nickel und Titan und Eisen und Titan zu
schützen. Ein anderes Beispiel für ein Flußmittel ist der Kryolith des Handels, der mit Erfolg zum Schulz
einer Legierung aus ungefähr 70% Titan und 30% Eisen eingesetzt worden ist.
Die Anwendung einer Flußmittel-Schutzdecke kann vermieden werden, indem man die Einlagerung in
einem Vakuumofen oder einem Ofen durchfuhrt, der mit einer Schutzgasatmosphäre betrieben werden
kann.
Claims (4)
1. Verfahren zur Herstellung eines Formkörpers, der mindestens eine harte, hochschmelzende Phase
aus in situ gebildetem Carbid enthält, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß man
(a) in einen durchlässigen Vorkörper, der Kohlenstoff enthält, ein metallisches Material in
flüssiger Phase einlagert, das mindestens ein als Carbidbildner geeignetes Element, das mit
dem Vorkörper unter Bildung einer harten, hochschmelzenden Phase reagiert, und zusätzlich
mindestens ein Element enthält, das den Schmelzpunkt des Carbidbildners erniedrigt,
wobei die Einlagerung bei einer' Temperatur oberhalb des Schmelzpunktes des
metallischen Materials und unterhalb derjenigen Temperatur, bei der eine merkliche
Reaktion zwischen dem Carbidbildner und dem Vorkörper vonstatten geht, erfolgt,
(b) die Einlagerung in den Vorkörper so lange fortsetzt, bis praktisch die Poren des Vorkörpers
bis mindestens in eine wesentliche Tiefe gefüllt sind,
c) den Vorkörper nach dem Abkühlen zur endgültigen Form verarbeitet und schließlich
(d) den Formkörper einer Temperatur aussetzt, bei welcher das harte, hochschmelzende Carbid gebildet wird.

2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß dem geschmolzenen metallischen Material vor der Einlagerung ein Flußmittel zugesetzt
wird.
3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Einlagerung im Vakuum
erfolgt.
4. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Einlagerung bei normalem
Druck in einer Schutzgasatmosphäre erfolgt.
