Abstract

本发明提供具有能够废弃MgO保护层等制造困难的薄膜工序而采用低成本的厚膜工序进行制造的、能够低电压驱动的面板结构的AC型PDP。在一对放电电极中,一方的电极用导电性电极材料形成为按各像素分离而独立的岛状的、隔着介质层与总线电极电容耦合的所谓AC型电极,另一方的总线电极直接曝露于放电空间的所谓DC型电极,将上述电极作为一对进行放电显示。

Description

等离子显示屏及其驱动方法
技术领域
本发明涉及等离子显示屏及其驱动方法。
背景技术
当前已经实用化的PDP(等离子显示屏)主要是所谓3电极面放电型PDP(参照图12),其结构是:在前面侧设一对透明的放电电极即所谓维持电极,并将其表面用透明的低熔点玻璃层覆盖,而且将该低熔点玻璃层的表面用作为保护膜的MgO即氧化镁覆盖,在背面侧与上述维持电极交叉地设置构成XY矩阵的所谓地址电极,还设有限定像素的障壁以及在其表面涂敷的荧光体。该PDP是放电电极的表面覆盖了介质层和MgO保护层的AC型PDP,其特征在于,具有荧光面设在背面侧的所谓反射型荧光面。
与此不同,也有电极面不被介质层覆盖的所谓DC型PDP,例如作为发明人与本发明相同的现有技术,基本构造是上述DC型PDP,但其下层设有触发放电用的电极,该电极被介质层覆盖,其上面形成导电性的DC型PDP结构的如图13所示结构的所谓AC/DC混合型的PDP(参照专利文献1)。
另外,还有如图14所示的所谓半AC型PDP结构,其中,放电电极的一方以金属直接在放电空间曝露,另一方由电介质覆盖。关于该PDP的构造及其驱动方法,有本发明人提出的先有申请(参照专利文献2)。
另外,虽然是具有上述反射荧光面的标准的3电极面放电型PDP,但由上述前面侧的透明电极构成的放电电极介质层和保护层的表面上还形成与放电电极相同的透明电极(放电辅助电极),该透明电极不被介质层覆盖,且按各像素分离的岛状地形成(图15)(参照专利文献3)。
另外,同样由本发明人提出的先有申请(图际申请PCT/JP03/11777)中,为了不需要透明电极和MgO保护层而在背面侧形成放电电极,在总线电极上隔着介质层形成具有导电性且2次电子发射率高的例如LaB6材料的阴极等,该阴极按各像素岛状地形成,其结构如图16所示。
另外,也有将上述电极材料LaB6用作DC型PDP的阴极的报告(参照非专利文献1)。

发明内容
但是,以上的已有的发明和技术中存在许多有待解决的课题。
首先,当前一般的具有上述反射型荧光面的所谓3电极面放电型PDP(图12)中,为了使前面侧的放电电极、介质层、MgO保护层等不妨碍从荧光面的发光而尽可能透明,需要许多薄膜工序,制造上的问题大。
另外,MgO保护层用真空蒸镀工序形成,工艺装置很大,因此价格高。上述专利文献2列举的半AC型PDP构造(图14)中,由于也形成MgO保护层,因此存在同样的问题。
另一方面,具有上述专利文献3中提出的结构的PDP(图15),可期待发光效率的改善效果,基本构造是具有上述一般的反射型荧光面的3电极面放电型PDP,因此,岛状的电极必须是透明,现状是,必须用ITO即氧化铟锡或透明导电膜即氧化锡等形成,这些材料的电阻大,二次电子发射率也差,且离子撞击弱,因此实用上不适合。
另外,上述先有申请发明中提出的图16所示的结构的PDP中,放电电极位于背面侧,因此不需要将电极限定为透明的材料,考虑到作为放电电极所需的性能即导电性、2次电子发射率、耐离子撞击性等因素,具有能够使用最合适的材料例如LaB6即六硼化镧等的优点。但是,虽然说不需要MgO保护层,但很难说是能够充分发挥放电空间中具有导电性电极的AC型PDP的特征的结构。
另外,上述非专利文献1中提出的PDP是DC型PDP,因此其寿命和亮度等性能不如AC型PDP。
鉴于这样的问题,本发明中废除了MgO保护层等制造困难的薄膜工序,能够用低成本的厚膜工序来制造,并且能够提供具有可低电压驱动的面板结构的等离子显示屏。
为了解决上述问题,作为权利要求1所述的第1发明的三电极型PDP中,如图1所示,设置纵向延伸的多个条状电极即所谓地址电极7,用障壁6隔开而具有适度的间隔,在横向延伸且对置的一对用以构成多个主放电电极即维持电极的总线电极3和4,该对总线电极中一侧即总线电极3由介质层2覆盖,再在其上以适合于用作放电电极的材料例如二次电子发射率高的LaB6即六硼化镧、CNT即碳纳米管或耐离子撞击性优的RuO2即氧化钌等按各像素分离而独立的岛状地形成的、设有可称为所谓具有导电性电极的AC型电极的放电电极5,成对的另一方的总线电极4上不覆盖介质层2而仅为总线电极,或在其上直接涂敷上述放电电极材料作为所谓DC型电极,它们成为一对来用作放电电极。
另外,作为权利要求2所述的第2发明,如图5所示,在上述总线电极3的上面,隔着上述介质层2,在地址电极7的方向即纵向也就是总线电极3的线宽方向的两端分离地形成与上述一样的岛状的放电电极5。
另外,作为权利要求3所述的第3发明具有这样的电极结构,如图8所示,在AC型电极的两侧设置与AC型的放电电极相对的另一方的DC型电极。
图8中,为进行图10所示的动作,DC型放电电极4和9形成为与邻接的像素共有的形状。
作为驱动上述权利要求3所述的电极结构的PDP的方法,如图11所示,维持期间中上述AC型电极5的两侧的DC型电极中,将一方的DC型电极4的电位维持得比AC型电极5的电位高,将另一方的DC型电极9的电位维持得比AC型电极5的电位低,如图10所示,正负交互地对AC型电极5施加电压,从高电位侧的DC型电极4向AC型电极5发生维持放电1,接着,从AC型电极5向低电位侧的DC电极9发生维持放电2。如此,在该驱动方法中,按维持放电的极性转移放电。
权利要求1所述的第1发明和权利要求2所述的第2发明,均与图16所示的先有申请发明的结构相同,具有在条状延伸的总线电极上隔着介质层按各像素分离的岛状的放电电极5,但是其不同之处在于:如图1所示,与上述岛状放电电极5相对的另一方的电极4不按各像素分离,且不隔着介质层2,将总线电极4按原样直接或在总线电极4上重叠涂敷了导电性的电极材料而形成为条状的所谓DC型电极。
本申请共有的发明结构中,即,将一方的电极设置成具有隔着介质层的静电电容的AC型电极,同时将另一方的电极设置成与DC型PDP的电极相同的将总线电极即电流供给用电极直接曝露于放电空间的导电性条状电极即DC型电极,从而具有传统的发明所没有的显著效果。
以下,列举本发明的效果。
首先,作为第1效果,与在一对放电电极的两方具有静电电容的先有申请发明的图16的结构不同,在导电性条电极侧即在电极4上未设置静电电容即产生电压降的负载,因此,能够降低驱动电压。
即,如图12所示,传统的一般的3电极面放电型PDP中,或如上述图16所示的结构中,在放电通路中各自的电极上形成的2个静电电容串联地插入,因此在该部分的电位降低导致施加在放电空间的电压降低,即与必须提高驱动电压的情况不同,本发明只在一侧设置具有静电电容的结构,该静电电容为1个,因此,电位降低少,施加在放电空间的电压能够提高。
作为第2效果,如上述那样,在放电电极的一侧没有因介质层形成的电容负载,不会产生因放电电流导致的电压降,因此,能够设置为相对的另一方电容性负载的多个电极5所共有的对置电极。
这是因为,由于无负载、低阻抗,能够让多个电极的大放电电流流过。
从而,能够高密度地形成像素,实现高清晰显示。
作为第3效果,能够容易地制造,实现制造工序的简化。
在先有申请发明的图16所示构造中,由于岛状电极的形状等的偏差会成为静电电容的偏差,在一对放电电极的两方形成有岛状电极的场合,该偏差会叠加在两方的静电电容的偏差上,对动作条件产生大的影响。
与此不同,本发明中只在一侧设有限定静电电容的岛状电极,另一方的电极为低阻抗,因此存在形状和线宽的偏差也没关系,能够不造成制造上的困难地确保宽的动作范围。
作为第4效果,特别是,在权利要求2所述的如图5所示的结构中,相对于一条总线电极3设置2个独立的放电电极5,因此能够提高清晰度。
作为第5和第6效果,特别是,在权利要求3所述的如图8所示的结构中,如表示驱动脉冲的定时的图11中所说明,相对于具有静电电容的AC型电极即电极3,在寻址期间与电极7的信号脉冲同步依次施加扫描脉冲而引起寻址放电,因此叠加在施加形成的壁电荷的交流脉冲上,从而继续地维持放电的所谓维持动作期间,通过提高相互对置的两侧的DC型电极的一方的电位并降低另一方的电位,能够使AC脉冲的电压只下降该DC电位的部分。
作为第7效果,如上述第2效果中说明的那样,DC型的放电电极4侧是低阻抗,能够对多个像素供给放电电流,如图8所示,一个DC型放电电极4能够作为相邻的两侧的AC型电极5的对置电极被共有,从而能够提高清晰度。

具体实施方式
在一对放电电极中的一方,在供给放电电流的总线电极上覆盖介质层,与该总线电极隔着介质层导电性形成岛状图案的放电电极,将作为放电电极的特性优良的电极材料例如LaB6等按各像素分离而形成,在另一方,总线电极作为不覆盖介质层地直接曝露于放电空间的条状的放电电极形成,或者在总线电极上用与上述同样导电性的电极材料涂敷表面而不覆盖介质层的结构而形成,只在一对电极的一侧形成存储功能所需的蓄积壁电荷的静电电容。
地址电极可在背面侧和前面侧中的任一侧形成,并且,荧光体也可在接近上述放电电极的背面侧的障壁或前面侧基板上形成。
[实施例1]
本发明的实施例1的PDP(等离子显示屏)的概略结构图(展开透视图)如图1所示,平面图如图2所示。另外,为了说明本实施例1的PDP的动作,将PDP的结构简化后的示意剖视图用图3示出。
首先,在背面侧玻璃基板1上形成在画面的横向上延伸的总线电极3和与其并行的放电电极4。
总线电极3由介质层2覆盖,放电电极4直接曝露于放电空间。
再有,图1中,放电电极4在介质层2上形成,当然,也可与总线电极3一样在玻璃基板1上直接形成,这时,介质层2可只将总线电极3覆盖。
放电电极5在介质层2上形成。该放电电极5用导电性材料形成,但由于如图1所示形成为按各像素分离的岛状,如图3所示,通过总线电极3之间的介质层2按各像素形成独立的静电电容8。
总线电极3没有直接曝露于放电空间,不需要作为放电电极的特性,因此可以用具有良好的导电性的例如金、银、镍等的油墨膏(inkpaste)进行丝网印刷后在500~600℃烧结,容易形成。
覆盖总线电极3的介质层2与通常的AC型PDP一样,用相同的丝网印刷等方法形成约20~30μm厚的低熔点玻璃油墨膏,同样在500~600℃下烧结而形成。
成为主放电电极的放电电极5和放电电极4采用适合放电的材料,即2次电子发射率高且耐离子撞击性优的材料,例如LaB6(六硼化镧)和CNT(碳纳米管)或RuO2(氧化钌)等。
再有,若放电电极4的曝露于放电空间的表面用上述材料覆盖,则其下层可同总线电极3一样用丝网印刷等的方法以导电性良好的银、镍等材料形成。
并且,放电电极4和5的电极材料,可以膏状地用丝网印刷形成,也可以用电镀、静电涂敷或粉末喷粉法等若干方法形成。
另外,图1中没有特别明确地示出地址电极7的配置。由于它与本发明的实质内容没有直接关系,因此省略其详细说明。
地址电极7在与背面基板1相对的前面基板侧或障壁6上形成。另外,地址电极7上不论是否用介质层覆盖,动作上均相同,这与其他PDP一样。
另外,本实施例中,总线电极3的线宽比放电电极4的线宽大。其理由是,为了增大在放电电极5和总线电极3之间形成的静电电容8,以能够提供充分的放电电流。
另一方面,放电电极4的一侧没有电容负载,只要放电电极4具有充分的导电性就能与线宽无关地流过放电电流。而且,将放电电极4的宽度变窄,可改善面积利用率,实现PDP的高清晰度化。
而且,基于同样的理由,作为主放电时的对置电极,可由放电电极4两侧的邻接的像素共有,这是本发明主要效果,如上述作为第7效果特别记载。
另外,彩色PDP中,通过来自放电的紫外线照射荧光体而发光。关于涂敷该荧光体的部位,与本发明的实质内容无关,由于图示起来烦杂而没有明确示出。例如,当然可以与图12所示的PDP和其他的传统结构PDP相同,在障壁6的壁面或前面侧玻璃基板上涂敷。
另外,各自的总线电极3(L1、L2、L3…)与在画面的纵向上延伸的地址电极7(图2中省略)正交,构成XY矩阵。
接着,用图4示出一例为驱动图1和图2所示结构的PDP而施加动作脉冲的定时。
如图4所示,图1所示结构的PDP的驱动基本上与传统结构的所谓3电极面放电型的AC型PDP相同。
在寻址期间,在地址电极即电极7上施加信号电压,在总线电极3(L1、L2、L3…)依次施加的扫描脉冲之间产生寻址放电,在总线电极3和岛状的放电电极5之间的静电电容8上蓄积对应于信号的电荷。在形成了该电荷的像素的岛状的放电电极5上,与通常的AC型PDP的放电电极一样,出现壁电压,因此根据寻址放电的有无按各像素在电极5的电位上产生电位差。而且,图4所示的驱动的场合,发生了寻址放电的放电电极5上蓄积正电荷,在总线电极3的电位叠加的电位成为电极5的电位。
在维持期间,与通常的AC型PDP一样,通过在电极3和电极4上交互地施加维持脉冲,执行利用上述壁电荷的存储动作。在该图4所示的例中,对电极3和电极4交互地施加同一极性的维持脉冲。
[实施例2]
本发明实施例2的PDP(等离子显示屏)的概略结构图(展开透视图)如图5所示,其平面图如图6所示。另外,为说明本实施例2的PDP的动作,图7给出了将PDP的结构作了简化的示意剖视图。
本实施例2的PDP具有与实施例1的PDP相同的结构,附加同样的标记,省略其重复说明。
实施例2的PDP中,在地址电极7的方向即纵向也就是总线电极3的线宽方向,两侧分离地各形成2个岛状的放电电极5。
通过这种结构,对于1条总线电极3各设置2个独立的放电电极5,因此能够提高清晰度。
[实施例3]
本发明的实施例3的PDP(等离子显示屏)的概略结构图(展开透视图)如图8所示,其平面图如图9所示。另外,为说明本实施例3的PDP的动作,图10给出了对PDP的结构作了简化的示意剖视图。
本实施例3的PDP具有与实施例1的PDP相同的结构,附加相同的标记,省略其重复说明。
实施例3的PDP中,与岛状的放电电极5相对的构成DC型电极的放电电极4、9配置在岛状的放电电极5的两侧。而且,构成该DC型电极的放电电极4、9形成为由在纵向(地址电极7的方向)邻接的像素共有。
由于具有这种结构,作为在纵向邻接的2像素的岛状的放电电极5的对置电极,能够共有1个DC型的放电电极4、9,从而能够实现高清晰度。
接着,图11给出一例为驱动图8和图9所示结构的PDP而施加的动作脉冲的定时。
如图11所示,寻址期间在地址电极即电极7上施加信号电压,在总线电极3(L1、L2、L3…)上依次施加的扫描脉冲之间产生寻址放电,在总线电极3和岛状的放电电极5之间的静电电容8上蓄积对应于信号的电荷。在形成有该电荷的像素的岛状的放电电极5上,与通常的AC型PDP的放电电极一样出现壁电压,根据寻址放电的有无按各像素在电极5的电位上产生电位差。而且,图11所示的驱动的场合,在发生了寻址放电的放电电极5上蓄积正电荷,在总线电极3的电位上叠加的电位成为电极5的电位。
在维持期间,只在总线电极3上交互地施加正负两极性的维持脉冲。另一方面,在放电电极4和放电电极9上施加各自不同的电位。在图11的例中,在放电电极4上施加正电位(Vs-High),在放电电极9上施加负电位(Vs-Low)。
这样,通过在放电电极4和放电电极9上分别施加不同的电位,能够使施加在总线电极3上的维持脉冲的电压按电位差的量降低。
这样,通过施加维持脉冲和电位,如图10中箭头所示,从高电位侧的DC型放电电极4向岛状的放电电极5产生维持放电1,接着从岛状的放电电极5向低电位侧的DC型放电电极9产生维持放电2。如此,能够按维持放电的极性将放电转移。
再有,加在总线电极3和放电电极4上的交流脉冲,如图4所示将同一极性的脉冲交互地加在两电极上,另外如图11所示只在例如总线电极3上施加正负两极性的脉冲,就AC型动作而言当然是相同的。
权利要求书
(按照条约第19条的修改)
1.一种设有多个成对的放电电极、在一对放电电极之间交互地施加极性互异的脉冲而动作的AC型等离子显示屏,其特征在于,
在所述一对放电电极中的一方,在供给放电电流的总线电极上覆盖介质层,与该总线电极隔着介质层将具有导电性的、作为放电电极的特性优良的电极材料形成为按各像素分离的岛状的放电电极,
在所述一对放电电极中的另一方,形成总线电极不被介质层覆盖而直接曝露于放电空间的条状的放电电极,或形成在总线电极上用与所述相同导电性的电极材料涂敷表面而不覆盖介质层的结构,
这些电极作为一对放电电极构成。
2.(经修改)权利要求1所述的等离子显示屏,其特征在于,
所述一对放电电极的覆盖介质层侧的放电电极中,将隔着介质层而形成的岛状的放电电极在总线电极的线宽方向即与总线电极正交的方向的线宽的两侧分离,相对于总线电极各配置2个独立的放电电极。
3.权利要求1或2所述的等离子显示屏,其特征在于,
设有所述岛状的放电电极和如同夹着所述岛状的放电电极在两侧与所述总线电极并行地延伸、不覆盖所述介质层的所述条状的放电电极,与地址电极共同构成4电极结构。
4.(经修改)驱动权利要求3所述的4电极结构的等离子显示屏的方法,其特征在于,
在维持期间以如下方式进行驱动:夹着所述岛状电极的2个所述条状放电电极中一方的条状放电电极设置在恒定的正电位,且另一方的条状放电电极设置在恒定的负电位。

Claims (4)

1.一种设有多个成对的放电电极、在一对放电电极之间交互地施加极性互异的脉冲而动作的AC型等离子显示屏,其特征在于,
在所述一对放电电极中的一方,在供给放电电流的总线电极上覆盖介质层,与该总线电极隔着介质层将具有导电性的、作为放电电极的特性优良的电极材料形成为按各像素分离的岛状的放电电极,
在所述一对放电电极中的另一方,形成总线电极不被介质层覆盖而直接曝露于放电空间的条状的放电电极,或形成在总线电极上用与所述相同导电性的电极材料涂敷表面而不覆盖介质层的结构,
这些电极作为一对放电电极构成。
2.权利要求1所述的等离子显示屏,其特征在于,
所述一对放电电极的覆盖介质层侧的放电电极中,隔着介质层而形成的岛状的放电电极设置成在总线电极的线宽方向即与总线电极正交的方向的线宽的两侧分离。
3.权利要求1或2所述的等离子显示屏,其特征在于,
设有所述岛状的放电电极和如同夹着所述岛状的放电电极在两侧与所述总线电极并行地延伸、不覆盖所述介质层的所述条状的放电电极,与地址电极共同构成4电极结构。
4.驱动权利要求3所述的4电极结构的等离子显示屏的方法,其特征在于,
在维持期间以如下设置进行驱动:夹着所述岛状电极的2个所述条状放电电极中一方的条状放电电极设置成相对于所述岛状放电电极为正的电位,且另一方的条状放电电极设置成相对于所述岛状放电电极为负的电位。
