技术领域
本发明涉及电致发光显示设备,尤其涉及一种适于增加亮度均匀性的电致发光显示设备驱动方法和装置。
背景技术
最近已经开发了各种平面显示设备,它们能减小重量和体积,而这正是阴极射线管CRT的缺点。这样的平面显示设备包括:液晶显示器,场致发射显示器,等离子显示板,以及电致发光(下文称EL)显示设备。
PDP的结构和制作工艺相对简单,因此PDP最适于制成大型的PDP,但其发光效率和亮度低,且其功率耗损高。因为采用了半导体工艺,所以很难使LCD大型化,但由于其主要用于笔记本电脑的显示设备,所以其需求量得到增加,然而,其存在很难制成大型的LCD与由于背光单元导致的高功率耗损等缺点。此外,在LCD中,由于偏振滤光器、棱镜片和漫射板等光学装置导致光的损失很高,且其视角窄。与此相比,EL显示设备通常分为无机EL和有机EL,其优点是响应速度快,发光效率和亮度高,且其视角也宽。有机EL显示设备能在大约10v的电压下以几万cd/m2的高亮度显示图像。
如图1所示,在有机EL显示设备中,在玻璃基板1上形成有透明导体材料的正极2,其上沉积有空穴注入层3、有机材料的发光层4、电子注入层5和金属负极6。如果在正极2和负极6之间施加电场,则空穴注入层3中的空穴和电子注入层5中的电子分别向发光层4运动,并在发光层4中结合。然后,发光层4中的荧光材料被激发和转换,产生可见光。此时,亮度与正极2和负极6之间的电压不成比例,但与电流成比例。因此,用于驱动有机EL显示设备的装置通常由恒流源来驱动。
如图2所示,用于驱动现有技术的有机EL显示设备的装置包括:给数据线DL1到DLm提供电流的恒流源21,以及给各个扫描线SL1到SLn施加扫描高电压Vhigh和地电压GND的切换装置22和23。
在图1中,数据线DL1到DLm作阴极,扫描线SL1到SLn作阳极。在m个数据线DL1到DLm和n个扫描线SL1到SLn的交点处形成有(m×n)个像素单元20。恒流源21由两个或更多切换装置和包含电流源的电流反射镜来实现。与根据输入数据而施加在扫描线SL1到SLn上的扫描脉冲同步的恒流源21向数据线DL1到DLm施加恒定的电流。切换装置22和23由MOS-FET之类的晶体管装置实现。与扫描线SL1到SLn相连的切换装置22和23顺次给扫描线SL1到SLn施加负扫描电压,以选择要显示数据的扫描线。因此,响应于控制信号T1,打开与地电压源GND相连的切换装置22,以给选中的扫描线施加地电压GND,响应于控制信号T2,打开与扫描高电压源Vhigh相连的切换装置23,给未选中的扫描线施加扫描高电压Vhigh。
图3显示了施加于扫描线SL1到SLn上的扫描脉冲,以及施加于数据线DL1到DLm上的数据脉冲。
如图3所示,扫描脉冲SCAN作为负电压,即正向电压,顺次施加给扫描线SL1到SLn,与扫描脉冲SCAN同步的数据脉冲DATA作为正电流施加给数据线DL1到DLm。此时,根据与施加了负电压的扫描线SL1到SLn相连的像素单元DATA中的数据,仅在已施加正电流的像素单元DATA处发出光。
另一方面,与未选中的扫描线相连的像素单元20的两端会积聚相反方向的电荷。在这种状态下,如果在未选中的扫描线上施加了负电压的时候选中扫描线,则积聚了相反电荷的像素单元20会延迟相当长的时间Δt来充电到所需的正数据电流水平,正如图4所示的施加在实际EL面板上的数据RDATA。其原因在于对积聚了相反电荷的像素单元20所施加的输入电流被相反电荷抵消了。
通过公式1能更充分地阐明有机EL显示设备的数据延迟。像素单元20的等效电容是C,像素单元20的电压是V,像素单元20中加载的电荷量是Q,以及像素单元20的输入电流是I时,用以下公式1确定像素20上加载的电荷量。

如果电流是随时间恒定的,则把像素单元20加载到所需电压的时间t=(C×V)/I。例如,如果C=2.4nF,I=200μA,则把像素单元20加载到10V的时间是(2.4nF×10V/200μA=120μs)。与有机EL显示装置中扫描线的发光时间相比,该加载时间相当长。
这个延迟时间使像素单元20的有效响应速度降低。为补偿响应速度的降低,应增加输入电流,但这会引起另一个问题,即由于各个像素20的驱动电压增加而导致的功率消耗增加。
另外,在现有技术的EL显示装置的驱动装置中,很难使数据线DL1到DLm之间的亮度均匀,原因在于数据线DL1到DLm由恒流源21驱动。为使数据线DL1到DLm之间的亮度均匀,各个数据线DL1到DLm施加的电流必须相同。因此,需要减小多个包含恒流源21的数据驱动集成电路IC的电流偏差范围。例如,各个个数据驱动IC的电流偏差范围必须限制在50±0.5μA内,以使各个数据线DL1到DLm的亮度均匀到大约20nit。在实现实际电路的时候,设计和制备电流偏差在1%内的数据驱动IC不仅增加了IC单元的成本,而且即使在实际EL面板上安装了驱动IC的情况下,在所需的电流偏差范围内驱动各个数据驱动IC也是很困难的。
因此,现有技术EL显示设备通过恒流源21驱动数据线DL1到DLm,引起亮度和亮度均匀性降低,因此图像质量下降。
发明内容
因此,本发明的一个目的在于提供一种能提高图像质量的电致发光显示设备驱动方法和装置。
为达到本发明的这些和其它目的,根据本发明的一个方面,用于驱动电致发光显示设备的方法包括:通过向多个扫描线中的任何一个施加扫描信号来选择扫描线,其中扫描信号下降到一个比地电压高的电压;以及在恒定电压与恒定电流之间进行切换,以向与扫描线交叉的多个数据线施加数据。
在该方法中,根据可由用户控制的显示设备亮度,在恒定电压和恒定电流之间进行切换,以驱动数据线。
在该方法中,显示设备的亮度低时,用恒定电压驱动数据线,显示设备的亮度高时,用恒定电流驱动数据线。
在该方法中,在数据的加载时间内数据线用恒定电流驱动,当数据加载完成后像素单元发光时数据线用恒定电压驱动。
在该方法中,电致发光显示设备是无源矩阵型。
根据本发明的另一方面,电致发光显示设备的驱动装置包括:扫描驱动器,通过对多个扫描线中的任何一个施加扫描信号来选择扫描线,其中,扫描信号下降到一个比地电压高的电压;数据驱动器,其在恒定电压和恒定电流之间进行切换,以向与扫描线交叉的多个数据线施加数据。
数据驱动器包括产生恒定电压的恒压源;产生恒定电流的恒流源;以及把恒压源和恒流源中的任一个连接到数据线的切换装置。

具体实施方式
以下参考图5到图9阐明本发明的实施例。
如图5所示,根据本发明第一实施例的EL板的驱动装置包括:无源矩阵型EL板;恒流源54,其用于向数据线DL1到DLm施加电流;恒压源51,其用于对数据线DL1到DLm施加电压;以及切换装置52,其把恒压源51和恒流源54中的任何一个连接到数据线DL1到DLm;切换装置53和55,其向各个扫描线SL1到SLn提供扫描高电压Vhigh和地电压GND;以及定时控制器56,其用于控制切换装置52、53和55中的每一个。
EL板是无源矩阵型。在EL板内m个数据线DL1到DLm和n个扫描线SL1到SLn的交叉处形成了(m×n)个像素单元50。
当数据线DL1到DLm被充电时,恒流源54对数据线DL1到DLm施加恒定电流。进一步说,当显示需要消耗大电流的灰度数据,例如数据时,恒流源54对数据线DL1到DLm施加恒定电流,数据的灰度级处于整个灰度范围的上半部分。进一步,在消耗大电流的亮度模式下,例如,在用户把亮度模式调得很高,使得图像的平均亮度调到几百cd/m2或更多的情况下,恒流源54对数据线DL1到DLm施加电流。
恒压源51在电流加载完成后对数据线DL1到DLm施加恒定电压。进一步,当图像的亮度均匀性低时,例如,处于总的可表达灰度级的下半部分内,则恒压源51对数据线DL1到DLm施加恒定电压。如果用户通过调低亮度模式来调低图像的平均亮度时,恒压源51对数据线DL1到DLm施加电压。
响应于来自定时控制器56的控制信号φ1,第一切换装置52把恒压源51和恒流源54中的任一个与数据线DL1到DLm相连。
第一切换装置52和恒流源54被集成在数据驱动IC中,除了现有技术的EL板驱动电路中应用的恒电流驱动方案的数据驱动IC的电路配置外,该数据驱动IC还仅包含第一切换装置52,因此,这种数据驱动IC很容易设计和制造。这种数据驱动IC的电压偏差的误差范围能很容易地控制在0.1V或更小范围内。
与扫描线SL1到SLn相连的切换装置53和55顺次给扫描线SL1到SLn施加负的扫描电压,以选择显示数据的扫描线。为此,响应于控制信号φ2,打开与地电压源GND相连的第二切换装置53,给选中的扫描线施加地电压GND,并响应于控制信号φ3,打开与扫描高电压源Vhigh相连的第三切换装置55,给未选中的扫描线施加扫描高电压Vhigh。第二和第三切换装置53和55都集成在扫描驱动IC中。
定时控制器56接收视频数据和垂直/水平同步信号H和V,产生第一到第三切换装置52、53和55所需要的控制信号φ1、φ2、φ3,并对切换装置的控制端施加所产生的控制信号φ1、φ2、φ3。
当在亮度均匀性容易降低的灰度范围内显示数据或显示低亮度模式的数据时,根据本发明的用于驱动EL的方法和装置利用根据来自恒压源51的恒定电压电平确定的电流对数据线DL1到DLm进行充电,因而,亮度均匀性可以保持在高水平。此外,当在要求有足够电流的灰度范围内显示数据或显示高亮度模式的数据时,根据本发明的用于驱动EL的方法和装置利用来自恒流源54的电流对数据线DL1到DLm进行充电,因此,图像的亮度得到提高。
图6显示了图5所示的给扫描线SL1到SLn施加的扫描脉冲和给数据线DL1到DLm施加的数据脉冲。
如图6所示,扫描脉冲SCAN作为负电压,即正向电压,顺次施加给扫描线SL1到SLn,与扫描脉冲SCAN同步的数据脉冲DATA作为正电压施加给数据线DL1到DLm。根据输入数据的灰度值来增加和减小数据脉冲DATA的宽度W。换言之,根据本发明的用于驱动EL的方法及装置通过脉宽调制法PWM来控制像素单元50的发光时间,以表示灰度。
图7显示了根据本发明第二实施例的EL板驱动装置。
如图7所示,根据本发明第二实施例的EL板驱动装置包括:无源矩阵型EL板;恒流源54,其用于对数据线DL1到DLm施加电流;恒压源51,其用于对数据线DL1到DLm施加电压;第一切换装置52,其把恒压源51和恒流源54中任何一个与数据线DL1到DLm相连;第二切换装置53和第三切换装置55,其对各个扫描线SL1到SLn提供扫描高电压Vhigh和地电压GND;比较器70,其对扫描线SL1到SLn内的电压与特定的基准电压进行比较;第四切换装置57,其用于切换扫描线SL1到SLn与地电压源GND之间的电流通路;以及定时控制器56,其用于控制第一到第三切换装置52、53和55。

电流充电结束后,由恒压源51对数据线DL1到DLm施加恒定电压。进一步说,在低亮度均匀性的灰度范围的数据下以及在低亮度均匀性的亮度模式下,恒压源51对数据线DL1到DLm施加电压。
响应于来自定时控制器56的控制信号φ1,第一切换装置52把恒压源51和恒流源54中任一个与数据线DL1到DLm相连。
第一切换装置53和第二切换装置55顺次给扫描线SL1到SLn施加负的扫描电压,以选择显示数据的扫描线。为此,响应于控制信号φ2,打开与地电压源GND相连的第二切换装置53,使被选的扫描线对地电势GND放电;响应于控制信号φ3,打开与扫描高电压源Vhigh相连的第三切换装置55,给未选择的扫描线施加扫描高电压Vhigh。
定时控制器56接收视频数据和垂直/水平同步信号H和V,产生第一到第三切换装置52、53和55所需要的控制信号φ1、φ2、φ3,并对切换装置的控制端施加所产生的控制信号φ1、φ2、φ3。
比较器70的非反转输入端与扫描线SL1到SLn相连,比较器70的反转输入端与基准电压源Vref相连。比较器70的输出端与第四切换装置57的控制端,即栅极端相连。当扫描线SL1到SLn的电压小于基准电压Vref时,各个比较器70对扫描线SL1到SLn的电压与基准电压Vref进行比较,并产生低逻辑的输出信号。然后,把所产生的输出信号施加到第四切换装置57的控制端。如果扫描线SL1到SLn的电压等于或大于基准电压Vref,则各个比较器70产生高逻辑的输出信号,把所产生的输出信号施加到第四切换装置57的控制端。当扫描线SL1到SLn的电压小于基准电压Vref时,响应于比较器的低逻辑输出信号,第四切换装置57切断漏极端与源极端之间的电流通路。如果扫描线SL1到SLn的电压等于或大于基准电压Vref,则响应于比较器的高逻辑输出信号,第四切换装置57使漏极端与源极端之间的电流通路导通。
因此,如图9所示,比较器70和第四切换装置57不是把扫描线SL1到SLn的电压降到地电压GND,而是以相同的方式降到基准电压Vref。换言之,当对扫描线SL1到SLn施加扫描脉冲SCAN时,比较器70和第四切换装置57不是把扫描线SL1到SLn的电压降到地电压GND,而是降到指定的基准电压Vref。其原因在于扫描线SL1到SLn的电压上升,大于地电压GND,且当扫描线SL1到SLn上的电压下降时,由于各个扫描驱动IC的电流偏差和通过数据线DL1到DLm与像素单元50而施加在扫描驱动IC上的电流偏差,各个扫描线SL1到SLn中的升高电压的偏差相互不同。为此,当考虑到扫描驱动IC的允许电流而施加扫描脉冲时,基准电压Vref设定为扫描线SL1到SLn的最大电压上升值。假设地电压GND为0V,则把基准电压Vref设定为0.5V或更高,最好为大约2V。
如图8所示,可以用公共比较器80取代比较器70。公共比较器80的功能基本上与图7所示的比较器70一样。
如上所述,本发明的EL驱动方法及装置同时利用恒压源51和恒流源54来驱动数据线DL1到DLm。因此,本发明的EL驱动方法及装置提高了亮度均匀性与亮度,因此,图像质量能保持在高水平。
虽然根据特定的优选实施例对本发明进行了详细说明,但本领域的技术人员可以理解,在不脱离所附权利要求所限定的本发明精神和范围的情况下,可以进行各种形式和细节上的变化。
Claims (15)
1.一种用于驱动电致发光显示设备的方法,包括:
通过对多个扫描线中的任何一个施加扫描信号来选择扫描线,其中,扫描信号下降到一个比地电压高的电压;以及
在恒定电压和恒定电流之间进行切换,以向与扫描线交叉的多个数据线施加数据。
2.根据权利要求1所述的方法,其中,根据可由用户控制的显示设备亮度,在恒定电压和恒定电流之间执行切换以驱动数据线。
3.根据权利要求2所述的方法,其中,在显示设备的亮度低时,数据线由恒定电压驱动,在显示设备的亮度高时,数据线由恒定电流驱动。
4.根据权利要求1所述的方法,其中,在加载数据的时间内,由恒定电流给数据线充电,数据加载完成后像素单元发光时,数据线由恒定电压驱动。
5.根据权利要求1所述的方法,其中,电致发光显示设备是无源矩阵型。
6.一种电致发光显示设备的驱动装置,包括:
扫描驱动器,通过给多个扫描线中的任一个施加扫描信号来选择扫描线,其中,扫描信号下降到一个比地电压高的电压;以及
数据驱动器,其在恒定电压和恒定电流之间进行切换,以给与扫描线交叉的多个数据线施加数据。
7.根据权利要求6所述的驱动装置,其中,数据驱动器包括:产生恒定电压的恒压源;
产生恒定电流的恒流源;以及
把恒压源和恒流源中任一个连接到数据线的切换装置。
8.根据权利要求6所述的驱动装置,其中,根据可由用户控制的显示设备亮度,数据驱动器在恒定电压和恒定电流之间进行切换,以驱动数据线。
9.根据权利要求6所述的驱动装置,其中,在显示设备的亮度低时,数据驱动器通过恒定电压驱动数据线,在显示设备的亮度高时,数据驱动器通过恒定电流驱动数据线。
10.根据权利要求6所述的驱动装置,其中,在数据的加载时间内,数据驱动器利用恒定电流对数据线进行充电,在数据加载完成后像素单元发光时,用恒定电压驱动数据线。
11.根据权利要求6所述的驱动装置,其中,根据输入数据的灰度值,数据驱动器变化施加给数据线的电压和电流的施加时间。
12.根据权利要求6所述的驱动装置,其中,扫描驱动器包括:
第一切换装置,用于切换扫描线和产生地电压的地电压源之间的电流通路;
第二切换装置,用于切换扫描线和产生特定扫描高电压的电压源之间的电流通路;以及
第三切换装置,用于切换扫描线和第一切换装置之间的电流通路。
13.根据权利要求6所述的驱动装置,其中,扫描驱动器还包括:比较器,将扫描线中的电压和特定的基准电压进行比较;以及切换装置,通过比较器的控制而控制扫描线中的电压。
14.根据权利要求13所述的驱动装置,其中,基准电压设定为比地电压高。
15.根据权利要求6所述的驱动装置,其中,电致发光显示设备是无源矩阵型。
