Abstract

技术领域
本发明一般地涉及用于有源矩阵驱动的有机电致发光器件的像素电路。
背景技术
有机发光二极管(OLED)包括特别优选的形式的电光发射器。使用OLED来制造的显示器相对LCD及其他平板技术具有许多优势。它们是明亮的,开关快速的(与LCD相比),提供了宽视角并且在各种基板上制造是容易且廉价的。
有机的(在此包括有机金属的)LED可以使用包括聚合物、小分子及树形化合物(dendrimers)的材料来制造,颜色范围取决于所使用的材料。在WO 90/13148、WO 95/06400及WO 99/48160中描述了基于聚合物的OLED的实例;在WO 99/21935和WO 02/067343中描述了基于树形化合物的材料的实例;以及在US 4539507中描述了基于所谓的小分子的器件的实例。
参考图1,OLED的一般的器件架构包括透明的玻璃或塑料的基板1,以及氧化铟锡的阳极2和阴极4。在阳极2和阴极4之间提供了有机电致发光层3。更多的层可以位于阳极2和阴极4之间,例如电荷传输层、电荷注入层或电荷阻挡层。
电致发光层3可以是图形化的或是未图形化的。例如,用作照明源的器件可以是未图形化的。包含图形化的层的器件可以是无源矩阵显示器或有源矩阵显示器。在无源矩阵显示器中,阳极2由阳极材料的平行条形成而电致发光层3沉积于条状的阳极2上。阴极的平行条4被布置于电致发光层3之上,正交于阳极2的平行条。阴极4的相邻条典型地由通过光刻形成的绝缘材料的条(所谓的“阴极分隔物”)隔开。无源矩阵显示器使用列驱动器和行驱动器通过分别扫描显示器以沿着分别由正交的阳极条和阴极条所代表的列和行对单个像素寻址来驱动。所谓的有源矩阵显示器典型地具有与图形化的阳极2和未图形化的阴极4结合所使用的图形化的电致发光层3。在有源矩阵的驱动方案中,显示器的每个像素包括其自身的关联的驱动电路。驱动电路典型地至少包括存储元件,例如电容器、地址晶体管或开关晶体管及驱动晶体管。
OLED器件可以是完全透明的,其中阳极2和阴极4两者都是透明的。具有透明阴极的所谓“顶发射”OLED器件对有源矩阵器件是特别有利的,因为通过该器件中的透明阴极的发射至少部分地由位于发射像素之下的驱动电路所阻挡。
应当意识到透明阴极的器件不需要具有透明的阳极(当然,除非想要完全透明的器件),所以用于底发射的器件的透明阳极可以用反射材料层(如铝层)来替代或补充。例如,在GB 2348316中公开了透明阴极的器件的实例。
图2示出了电压控制的OLED有源矩阵像素电路10的实例。给显示器的每个像素提供了像素电路10并且提供地线(ground)12、Vss14、行选择16总线线路(bus line)及列数据18总线线路来使像素互连。因此,每个像素都具有电源连接和地线连接并且每行像素都具有公共的行选择线16以及每列像素都具有公共的数据线18。
每个像素具有与在地线和电源线12、14之间的驱动晶体管(drivertransistor)22串联连接的OLED 20。驱动晶体管22的栅极端子24与存储电容器26连接并且寻址晶体管28在行选择线16的控制之下将栅极端子24连接至列数据线18。寻址晶体管28是在行选择线16被激活时将列数据线18连接至栅极端子24及电容器26的薄膜场效应晶体管(FET)开关。这样,当寻址晶体管28导通时,列数据线18上的电压能够存储于电容器26上。这一般被认为是对像素电路进行编程。电压在电容器26上保留至少一个帧刷新周期,因为栅极与驱动晶体管22的连接的相对高的阻抗以及寻址晶体管28处于截止状态。
驱动晶体管22典型地还是FET晶体管并且使由晶体管的栅极电压减阈值电压所决定的(漏极-源极)电流通过。因此,栅极端子24上的电压控制着通过OLED 20的电流并从而控制着OLED 20的亮度。特别是因为OLED 20的发射非线性地取决于所施加的电压,图2的电压控制电路可能受到许多缺点的妨碍,而电流的控制是优选的,因为OLED的光输出与通过它的电流成比例。图3(在图3中,与图2的元素相似的元素由相似的参考数字表示)示出了图2的电路的一种使用电流控制的变型。由电流发生器30设置的在(列)数据线上的电流对通过FET32的电流“编程”,这转而设置通过OLED 20的电流,因为晶体管28a导通时(匹配的)晶体管32和驱动晶体管22形成电流镜。
在有源矩阵驱动电路包括有机薄膜晶体管(OTFT)或由LTP(低温度多晶硅)制造的晶体管的情形中,晶体管一般被称作p型器件。
在有源矩阵驱动电路包括由氢化的非晶硅(a-Si:H)制造的晶体管的情形中,晶体管一般被称作n型器件。
在FET技术(a-Si:H和LTP)中遇到的一个问题是用于连续工作的阈值电压(Vth)的漂移。一般地,a-Si:H晶体管的Vth的漂移对电压应力是很敏感的。施加大于驱动晶体管所需的阈值的高电压会引起阈值电压的大变化。这使其自身表现为对于相同的所施加的编程信号使不同的驱动晶体管流向OLED不同的驱动电流。因此,这可能导致跨越显示器的像素亮度的非线性的问题。
解决上述问题的一种途径已经由Shirasaki.T等人(以下称为Shirasaki)在“Solution for Large-Area Full-Color OLED TelevisionLight Emitting Polymer and a-Si TFT Technologies”(卷II,p275-278,Proceedings of International Display Workshop(IDW),2004年12月以及可于http://hat-lab.ed.kyushau.ac.jp//Documents/AMD3_OLED5-1.pdf在线获得)中提出。该文献公开了三晶体管的a-Si TFT像素电路,据称在该像素电路中像素电路和驱动方案能够补偿由阈值电压的漂移所引起的不稳定性。

给补偿方案所提出的其他方法需要更复杂的像素电路配置及驱动方案。在任何器件中,与使制造保持简单的需要一起存在着用于另加的器件的“不动产”数量的上限。而且,作为器件所引入的器件或线路越多,则一般定义为与由总线线路或器件所使用的空间相比由可视的发射像素所占用的空间的显示器的口径比(aperture ratio)就被减小。
随时间而影响OLED的光发射的另一参数来自OLED自身并且特别是由于OLED的老化。随着OLED老化,它们一般变得效率较低从而引起光输出的损失。该光输出损失一般被认为是由电流-光子转换效率的减小以及由OLED电阻的增加所引起,其中OLED电阻的增加导致对于给定的驱动信号的通过OLED的电流的减小。
希望提供设法对像素电路的驱动晶体管中的阈值变化进行补偿的改进的像素电路。
还希望提供设法对OLED老化进行补偿的改进的像素电路。
还希望提供减小总线线路的数量使得能够增加器件的口径比的改进的像素电路。
发明内容
根据本发明的第一方面,提供了一种用于驱动有机发光二极管(OLED)的像素驱动器像素驱动电路,包括:第一选择线;第二选择线;数据线;第一电压供应线;以及驱动晶体管,该驱动晶体管具有在一端与第一电压供应线连接的而在另一端与OLED连接的电流通路并且具有与存储元件连接的栅极端子,该存储元件连接于驱动晶体管的栅极和源极之间以在第一开关晶体管的控制之下为驱动晶体管存储驱动信号,该第一开关晶体管具有与第一选择线间的栅极连接并且具有连接于驱动晶体管的栅极和漏极之间的电流通路;第二开关晶体管,具有与第二选择线间的栅极连接,其中第二开关晶体管具有在一端与数据线连接而在另一端则与位于驱动晶体管和OLED之间的节点连接的电流通路。
在另一种实施方案中提供了第三选择线以及具有与第三选择线间的栅极连接的第三开关晶体管,其中第三开关晶体管位于在OLED与驱动晶体管之间串联的驱动晶体管的电流通路中。
优选地,第一选择线是非反相选择线而第三选择线是反相选择线使得当第一选择线为“高”时第三选择线为“低”。
更优选地,第一及第二选择线是公共的。

具体实施方式
参考图5,本发明的第一实施方案示出了像素电路50。这样的像素电路50被提供给像素的整个显示器(没有示出)的每个OLED 52。提供了地线54、供应电压轨56、第一行选择线58及列数据线60来使像素互连。

驱动晶体管66具有与存储电容器68的第一端子连接的栅极端子,该存储电容器68的第二端子与开关晶体管70的第一端子连接。开关晶体管70的栅极端子连接至第一行选择线58并由此处于其控制之下。开关晶体管70的第二端子与列数据线60连接。第二晶体管72具有与第一行选择线58连接并由此处于其控制之下的栅极端子,与存储晶体管68的第一端子及驱动晶体管66的栅极端子连接的第一端子以及与供应电压轨56连接的第二端子。
在工作中,像素电路50包括从供应电压轨56到地线54施加于像素电路50两端的供应电压Vdd。编程阶段包括第一行选择线58为“高”由此使晶体管70及第二晶体管72导通。同时,与第一行选择线58相比为反相的行选择线的第二行选择线62为“低”并使第一晶体管64截止。于是使OLED 52与电压供应线分离,去除了调制在低电平与高电平之间的供应电压的需要。因此,在列数据线60上的电压能够存储于电容器68上。在发射阶段期间,第一行选择线为“低”由此使开关晶体管70及第二晶体管72截止。同时,第二行选择线62为“高”,使驱动晶体管66和第一晶体管64能够将(漏极-源极)电流流到OLED 52。
图5(及以下的图6和图7)的像素电路50是电流控制的,同时在列数据线60上加入了电流发生器(没有示出),如在本领域中所已知的。
参考图6,其中与图5的元素相似的元素由相似的参考数字指示,本发明的第二实施方案示出了像素电路100。像素电路100包括附加的行选择线102。
开关晶体管70具有与附加的行选择线102连接并由此处于该附加的行选择线102的控制之下的栅极端子,以及与存储电容器68的第二端子连接的第一端子和与列数据线60连接的第一端子。
在工作中,在像素电路100的编程阶段中,供应电压Vdd保持于低电位使得在OLED 52两端基本上是零电位差。在编程阶段期间,第一行选择线58和附加的行选择线102两者都是“高”,由此列数据线60上的电压能够存储于电容器68上。在发射阶段期间,供应电压Vdd转到高电位并且第一行选择线58及附加的行选择电路102是“低”。因此,驱动晶体管66使(漏极-源极)电流能够通过OLED 52。
如图6所示的本实施方案包括测量阶段,由此附加的选择线102为“高”并使列数据线60上的电压降能够在OLED 52两端由节点104到地线54进行测量。因为已知在OLED两端的电压降由于有机材料的老化会改变,所以所测得的电压降表示出该老化并且能够被用来补偿该老化。该电压降可以被测量并且与查找表比较,其中该查找表经由控制器可以要求用列数据线60上的较高的或较低的驱动信号(电压或电流)来对像素电路100编程。单个像素可以通过这种方式来补偿,或者许多像素则可以逐行地测量并补偿,或者器件可以作为一个整体来补偿。许多OLED 52上的电压降可以由许多OLED 52上的电压降的组合来获得。
参考图7,本发明的第三实施方案示出了两个像素电路200和250。在图7中,与在图5及图7中所描述的元素相似的元素由相似的参考数字指示。参考图7,像素电路250的电压供应线252与相邻的像素电路200的行选择线254共享。因此,减少了器件的总线线路的数量。因而电压供应线及行选择线被组合并在许多像素电路之间共享。
如果要求减小器件中的总线线路的总数,则像素电路的这种实施方案可以与实施方案1及2一同合并或单独合并。而且,如果希望实现能够在不需要调制供应电压的情况下给OLED老化提供补偿的像素电路,则实施方案1可以与实施方案2结合。
无疑,本领域技术人员将会想到其他许多有效的可选方案。应当理解,本发明并不限于所描述的实施方案而是包括在所附的权利要求精神及范围之内的对本领域技术人员来说显而易见的修改。
Claims (25)
1.一种用于驱动有机发光二极管(OLED)的像素驱动器电路,包括:
第一选择线;
第二选择线;
数据线;
第一电压供应线;以及
驱动晶体管,该驱动晶体管具有在一端与所述第一电压供应线连接而在另一端与所述OLED连接的电流通路并且具有与存储元件连接的栅极端子,该存储元件连接于所述驱动晶体管的栅极和源极之间以在第一开关晶体管的控制之下为所述驱动晶体管存储驱动信号,该第一开关晶体管具有与所述第一选择线的栅极连接并且具有连接于所述驱动晶体管的栅极和漏极之间的电流通路;第二开关晶体管,具有与所述第二选择线的栅极连接,其中所述第二开关晶体管具有在一端与所述数据线连接而在另一端则与位于所述驱动晶体管与所述OLED之间的节点连接的电流通路。
2.根据权利要求1所述的像素驱动器电路,还包括第三选择线以及具有与该第三选择线的栅极连接的第三开关晶体管,其中所述第三开关晶体管位于在所述OLED与所述驱动晶体管之间串联的所述驱动晶体管的电流通路中。
3.根据权利要求2所述的像素驱动器电路,其中所述第一选择线是非反相选择线而所述第三选择线是反相选择线使得当所述第一选择线为高电平时所述第三选择线为低电平。
4.根据权利要求2或3所述的像素驱动器电路,其中所述第一和第二选择线是公共的。
5.根据权利要求1到4中任一项所述的像素驱动器电路,其中所述第一电压供应线和另一选择线被形成为联合的电压供应及选择线。
6.根据权利要求1所述的像素驱动器电路,其中所述第一电压供应线和另一选择线被形成为联合的电压供应及选择线,并且其中所述第一和第二选择线是公共的。
7.根据权利要求5或6所述的像素驱动器电路,其中所述另一选择线是共享公共的数据线的相邻像素电路的第一选择线。
8.根据以上权利要求中任一项所述的像素驱动器电路,其中所述驱动晶体管是n型晶体管。
9.根据权利要求8所述的像素电路,其中所述驱动晶体管是非晶硅晶体管。
10.根据以上权利要求中任一项所述的像素电路,其中所述OLED具有电流通路使得所述OLED的阳极端子连接至所述驱动晶体管。
11.根据权利要求5到10中任一项所述的并且按行和列布置的多个像素驱动器电路,每个数据线由列中的每个像素电路与每个联合的电压供应线所共享并且全部选择线由行中的每个像素电路所共享,其中,对于特定的列及在寻址期间,第n-1个像素驱动器电路的联合的电压供应及选择线充当到第n个像素驱动器电路的所述第一电压供应线,并且第n+1个像素驱动器电路的联合的电压供应及选择线充当到第n个像素驱动器电路的选择线。
12.一种有源矩阵显示器件,包括根据以上权利要求中任一项所述的像素驱动器电路的阵列,其中所述像素驱动器电路按行和列来布置以形成所述显示器,并且每个数据线由列中的每个像素电路所共享而每个选择线则由行中的每个像素电路所共享。
13.根据权利要求12所述的有源矩阵显示器件,其中所述第二开关晶体管与电压感测器件连接,该电压感测器件感测OLED两端的电压降并且产生感测的电压降信号给控制器以响应于所述感测的电压降信号来调整所述驱动信号。
14.根据权利要求13所述的有源矩阵显示器件,其中将所述感测的电压降信号提供给用于为特性OLED存储代表电压与驱动信号之间的关系的电压数据的查找表,并且所述控制器被编程以响应于该关系来调整所述驱动信号。
15.根据权利要求13或14所述的有源矩阵显示器件,其中所述电压感测器件用于感测所述显示器的全部OLED的电压降。
16.根据权利要求13或14所述的有源矩阵显示器件,其中提供了多个电压感测器件,每个电压感测器件用于感测所述显示器的OLED的一个子集上的电压降。
17.根据权利要求13到16中任一项所述的有源矩阵显示器件,其中由所述电压感测器件感测的所述感测的电压降是多个OLED两端的电压降的组合。
18.根据权利要求13到17中任一项所述的有源矩阵显示器件,还包括用于由所述感测的电压降信号来确定像素驱动器电路的晶体管的晶体管特性的模块。
19.根据权利要求18所述的有源矩阵显示器件,其中所述晶体管特性是所述驱动晶体管的阈值电压漂移。
20.根据权利要求11到18中任一项所述的有源矩阵显示器件,其中所述像素驱动器电路是电流编程的。
21.一种用于驱动有机发光二极管(OLED)的像素驱动器电路,包括:
第一选择线;
数据线;
第一电压供应线;以及
驱动晶体管,该驱动晶体管具有在一端与所述第一电压供应线连接而在另一端与所述OLED连接的电流通路以及与存储元件连接的栅极端子,该存储元件与所述数据线连接以在具有与所述第一选择线的栅极连接的第一及第二开关晶体管的控制之下为所述驱动晶体管存储驱动信号;
第三开关晶体管,具有与第二选择线的栅极连接,其中该第三开关晶体管位于在所述OLED与驱动晶体管之间串联的所述驱动晶体管的所述电流通路中。
21.根据权利要求20所述的像素驱动器电路,其中所述第一选择线是非反相选择线而所述第二选择线是反相选择线使得当所述第一选择线为高电平时所述第二选择线为低电平。
22.根据权利要求20或21所述的像素驱动器电路,其中所述第一电压供应线和另一选择线被形成为联合的电压供应及选择线。
23.根据权利要求22所述的像素驱动器电路,其中所述另一选择线是所述第一选择线。
24.一种像素驱动电路,基本上如上文所描述的和/或参考附图中的图5、6及7。
25.一种有源矩阵显示器件,基本上如上文所描述的和/或参考附图中的图5、6及7。
