Description
본 발명은 액티브 매트릭스 디스플레이 및 관련된 디스플레이 구동 방법에 관한 것으로, 더 구체적으로는, 장치의 성능 특성을 향상시키기 위해 채용된 액티브 매트릭스 구동 유기 발광 다이오드(OLED) 디스플레이를 위한 추가의 구동 회로에 관한 것이다.
OLED를 사용하여 제조된 디스플레이는 LCD 및 다른 플랫패널 기술 이상의 많은 이점을 제공한다. 그들은 (LCD에 비해) 밝고, 선명하며, 전환이 빠르고, 넓은 시야각을 제공하며, 다양한 기판에 제조하기에 용이하고 저렴하다. 유기(여기서 유기 금속을 포함함) LED는 사용된 재료에 따라 달라지는 색의 범위에서 폴리머, 작은 분자 및 덴드리머(dendrimer)를 포함하는 재료를 이용하여 제조될 수 있다. 폴리머 기반 유기 LED의 예는 WO90/13148, WO95/06400 및 WO99/48160에 설명되어 있고, 덴드리머 기반 재료의 예는 WO99/21935 및 WO02/067343에 설명되어 있고, 이른바 작은 분자 기반의 장치의 예는 US 4,539,507에 설명되어 있다.
일반적인 OLED 장치는 2개 층의 유기 재료를 포함하는데, 그 중 하나는 발광 폴리머(LEP), 올리고머 또는 발광 저분자량 재료 등의 발광 재료의 층이고, 다른 하나는 폴리티오펜 유도체 또는 폴리아닐린 유도체 등의 정공(hole) 수송 재료의 층이다.
유기 LED는 화소의 매트릭스로 기판 위에 증착되어 싱글 또는 멀티컬러의 화소로 이루어진(pixellated) 디스플레이를 형성할 수 있다. 멀티컬러 디스플레이는 적색, 녹색, 청색 방출 화소를 사용하여 구성될 수 있다. 이른바 액티브 매트릭스(AM) 디스플레이는 각 화소와 연관된 메모리 소자, 일반적으로 스토리지 캐패시터 및 트랜지스터를 포함하는 반면, 패시브 매트릭스 디스플레이는 그러한 메모리 소자를 포함하지 않고, 대신에 안정된 이미지의 인상을 주기 위해 반복적으로 스캐닝된다. 폴리머 및 저분자 액티브 매트릭스 디스플레이 드라이버의 예는 WO99/42983 및 EP0,717,446A에서 각각 볼 수 있다.
디스플레이는 바텀 에미팅(bottom-emitting) 또는 탑 에미팅(top-emitting) 중 하나일 수 있다. 바텀 에미팅 디스플레이에서 광은 액티브 매트릭스 회로가 제조되는 기판을 통해 방출되고, 탑 에미팅 디스플레이에서 광은 액티브 매트릭스 회로가 제조되는 디스플레이의 층을 통과하지 않고 디스플레이의 앞면을 향해 방출된다.
탑 에미팅 OLED 디스플레이는, 일반적으로 상부 전극은 캐소드를 포함하고, 이것은 적어도 부분적으로 투명해야 할 뿐만 아니라 충분한 도전성을 갖고, 바람직하게는 근본 유기층의 어느 정도의 캡슐화(encapsulation)를 제공해야 하기 때문에, 바텀 에미팅 디스플레이보다 덜 흔하다. 그럼에도 불구하고, OLED 화소로부터 나온 광량을 향상시키기 위한 광 간섭 구조를 포함하는 캐소드를 설명하는 본 출원인의 공개 PCT 출원 WO2005/071771(그 전체는 참조에 의해 여기에 포함됨)에 포함된, 매우 다양한 탑 에미팅 구조가 기술되어 있다.
종래 OLED 디스플레이는 화소(또는 픽셀)가 직선 매트릭스로 구축된 이미지를 표시한다. 액티브 매트릭스 OLED는 종래 각 화소의 각 색에 대해 행 데이터 라인 및 열 데이터 선을 갖는다. 그러한 하나의 데이터 라인(102)이 도 1에 도시된다. 도 1을 참조하면, 구동 회로(101)는 복수의 화소 회로(103)에 접속되는 데이터 라인(102)에 접속된다. 각 화소 회로(103)는 하나의 화소 표시 소자에 대응하고 하나의 메모리 소자(도시하지 않음)를 포함한다. 각 데이터 라인(102)은 일반적으로 수백개의 화소 회로(103)에 접속될 것이다.
액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이 내에, 데이터 라인(102)은 전압 구동 방법 또는 전류 구동 방법 중 하나를 이용한다. 이 분야의 현재 상태는 전류 구동 방법이 전압 구동 방법을 초과하여 사용될 때 전기적 효율성의 증가를 경험한다. 전류 구동 방법이 사용되는 경우, 화소 회로(103)는 전류 소스(source) 또는 전류 싱크(sink) 중 하나로 사용될 수 있다.
출원 WO03/038790으로부터 인용되는 도 2는 전류에 의해 제어된 화소 드라이버 회로의 예를 도시한다. 이 회로에서 OLED(152)를 통과하는 전류는 기준 전류 싱크(166)를 이용하여 OLED 구동 트랜지스터(158)에 대한 드레인 소스 전류를 설정하고, 이 드레인 소스 전류에 필요한 구동 트랜지스터 게이터 전압을 기억함으로써 설정된다. 따라서, OLED(152)의 밝기는 기준 전류 싱크(166)로 흐르는 전류 Icol에 의해 결정되고, 이는 바람직하게 조정 가능하며 어드레싱될 화소에 대해 바람직하게 설정된다. 부가하여, 스위칭 트랜지스터(164)가 구동 트랜지스터(158)와 OLED(152) 사이에 더 접속된다. 일반적으로 각각의 열 데이터 라인에 대해 하나의 전류 싱크(166)가 제공된다.
전류 구동 액티브 매트릭스 화소 회로에 의해 공유된 문제는, 흔히 있는 일이지만, 화소 "프로그래밍" 전류는 작은 누설이고, 및/또는 데이터 라인 용량은 특히 큰 디스플레이에서 우세할 수 있다는 것이다.
도 1에서 가장 잘 볼 수 있듯이, 종래의 전류 구동 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이는 데이터 라인(102)의 저항-캐패시터 상수(resistor-capacitor constant)를 극복해야 한다. 구동 회로(101)는 바람직한 광 출력을 달성하기 위해 화소 회로(103)에 충분한 전류를 공급하는 것에 부가하여 데이터 라인(102)의 내재 저항 및 용량을 극복해야 한다.
본 발명의 제 1 관점에 따르면, 데이터 라인, 데이터 라인에 접속된 복수의 화소 회로, 화소 회로에 표시 데이터를 기입하기 위한 데이터 라인의 일단에 접속된 구동 회로, 및 구동 회로로부터 데이터 라인의 타단에 접속된 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로를 포함하는 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이가 제공된다.
본 발명은 바람직하게는 구동 회로가 접속되는 것과 반대쪽에서 데이터 라인에 접속된 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로를 제공한다. 그러한 회로의 부가는 액티브 매트릭스 OLED의 데이터 라인의 더 빠른 프리차징(pre-charging)을 가능하게 한다. 당업자에게 이해되는 바와 같이, 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로는 전압 제어 회로 또는 전류 제어 회로일 수 있다.
바람직하게는, 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로는 전류 소스 또는 전류 싱크이다. 전류 소스 또는 전류 싱크로서 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로를 사용하는 것은 데이터 라인의 저항-용량 계수를 극복하는 데 필요한 전류를 감소시킨다. 본 발명의 이점은 장치의 전력 효율성을 증가시키고, 이미지를 표시하는 데 걸리는 시간을 단축하며, 그에 따라 이미지 표시 리프레시 레이트(refresh rate)를 증가시키는 것을 포함한다.

도 3을 참조하면, 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따른 행 또는 열의 디스플레이 레이아웃의 개략도는 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이(200)를 포함한다. 디스플레이(200)는 구동 칩 회로(201)를 나타내는 프로그래밍 가능한 부스터 회로, 데이터 라인(202), 화소 회로(203), 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로(204)를 포함한다.

도 4(a)는 전류 소스의 프로그래밍 가능한 부스터 회로를 제공하기 위해 n-타입 트랜지스터를 이용하는 예시적 프로그래밍 가능한 부스터 회로(204)의 일반적인 레이아웃을 도시한다.
도 4(b)는 전류 싱크의 프로그래밍 가능한 부스터 회로를 제공하기 위해 n-타입 트랜지스터를 이용하는 예시적 프로그래밍 가능한 부스터 회로(204)의 일반적인 레이아웃을 도시한다.
도 4(c)는 전류 소스의 프로그래밍 가능한 부스터 회로를 제공하기 위해 p-타입 트랜지스터를 이용하는 예시적 프로그래밍 가능한 부스터 회로(204)의 일반적인 레이아웃을 도시한다.
도 4(d)는 전류 싱크의 프로그래밍 가능한 부스터 회로를 제공하기 위해 p-타입 트랜지스터를 이용하는 예시적 프로그래밍 가능한 부스터 회로(204)의 일반적인 레이아웃을 도시한다.
다른 효과적인 대안이 당업자에게 가능할 것이다. 본 발명은 상술한 실시예에 한정되는 것이 아니며, 여기에 첨부된 청구범위의 정신 및 범위 내에서 당업자에게 분명한 변형을 포함하는 것이 이해될 것이다.

Claims (21)
- 데이터 라인과,
상기 데이터 라인에 접속된 복수의 화소 회로와,
상기 화소 회로에 표시 데이터를 기입하기 위해 상기 데이터 라인의 일단에 접속된 구동 회로와,
상기 구동 회로로부터 상기 데이터 라인의 타단에 접속된 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로
를 포함하는 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,
상기 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로는 상기 구동 회로가 접속되는 것과 반대쪽 단에서 상기 데이터 라인에 접속되는 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 상기 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로는 전류 소스(source) 또는 전류 싱크(sink)인 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 상기 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로는 선택 또는 인에이블 회로를 포함하는 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 제 4 항에 있어서,
상기 구동 회로는 데이터 버스에 의해 상기 인에이블 회로에 접속되는 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 제 1 항 내지 제 5 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,
상기 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로는 전류 카피어(current copier)인 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 제 6 항에 있어서,
상기 전류 카피어는 듀티 프로그래밍된 인에이블 신호에 의해 가변적인 전류 싱크로서 제어 가능한 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 제 6 항에 있어서,
상기 전류 카피어는 프로그래밍된 데이터 신호의 최상위 비트에 의해 제어 가능한 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 제 1 항 내지 제 8 항 중 어느 한 항에 있어서,
상기 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로 및 상기 구동 회로는 동일한 기판 위에 배치되는 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 제 9 항에 있어서,
상기 기판은 비결정 실리콘(a-Si) 백플레인(backplane)을 포함하는 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,
상기 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로는 프로그래밍 가능한 전류 부스트 회로인 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 제 1 항에 있어서,
상기 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로는 프로그래밍 가능한 전압 부스트 회로인 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이.
- 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이를 프로그래밍하는 방법으로서,
상기 OLED 디스플레이는 전류 프로그래밍된 데이터 라인과, 상기 데이터 라인에 접속된 복수의 화소 회로와, 상기 화소에 표시 데이터를 기입하기 위해 상기 데이터 라인의 일단에 접속된 구동 회로와, 상기 구동 회로로부터 상기 데이터 라인의 타단에 접속된 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로를 구비하고,
상기 방법은
제 1 어드레싱 기간동안 상기 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로를 제 1 전류로 프로그래밍하는 단계와,
제 2 어드레싱 기간동안 상기 화소에 표시 데이터를 기입하고 상기 데이터 라인에 상기 제 1 전류를 공급하는 단계를 포함하는
액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이의 프로그래밍 방법.
- 제 13 항에 있어서,
인에이블 데이터 비트 및 하나 이상의 프로그램 데이터 비트에 의해 상기 프로그래밍 가능한 구동 부스트 회로를 활성화하여, 상기 구동 회로로부터 상기 데이터 라인에 공급된 상기 전류에 대해 편향된(biased) 전류를 제공하는 단계를 포함하는 액티브 매트릭스 OLED 디스플레이의 프로그래밍 방법.
