Abstract

背景技术
参考文献JP 10-171399(HITACHI)描述了一种共面型等离子体板,其包括:
背板,具有电极的第一阵列;
面板,平行于背板,具有与第一阵列垂直的电极对的第二阵列,每对电极在其间留有位于第一阵列的电极与第二阵列的电极对的交点的放电空间。
此类等离子体显示板的寻址和驱动通常包括以下步骤:
通过在每个要被激发的交点区域中交叉的背板电极和面板电极之间至少施加寻址电压脉冲,在此区域中激发放电;
通过在相同的面板电极和面板电极对之间施加一系列保持电压(sustain voltage)脉冲,在此区域中再次激发一系列放电。
按照此方法,寻址放电本质上垂直于板在空间中延伸,此空间中充满了放电气体,分隔开背板和面板;相反,保持放电(sustain discharge)本质上平行于板沿着面板延伸。
按照此传统方法,保持脉冲的瞬时频率通常为大约100到300kHz,并且它决定了板的发光度;如果电极对中的两个电极相对于地址电极总是具有正或零电位,则将保持称为“正”,在相反的情况下,称为“负”,或者,如果此电位交替的正和负(然后,以半相位偏移这对电极的保持信号),则称为“双极”。

按照此参考文献,正如参考文献图4-VII中示意性示出的那样,在传统的保持放电之后,在电极之间已经形成电荷时,施加甚高频信号的目的在于防止离子电荷到达阴极,以及在电极之间振动离子电荷;参照图5,所述文献教导:
需要在与脉冲101相对应的传统保持放电已经导致覆盖电极的介电层上的电荷完全反转之前,开始施加RF信号100;这样,分隔脉冲前沿101与RF信号的第一前沿的时间td必须实质上短于保持放电和电荷完全反转的累积时间;
需要RF信号100的半周期tw足够短,使得离子电荷在半周期期间没有时间返回阴极;此条件通常导致难以采用的甚高频。
按照此参考文献,在这些条件下,获得了由RF信号稳定的放电,发射了比传统的低频放电所获得的发光效率高得多的发光效率。
作为示例,按照此参考文献,当分隔两个在放电点的保持电极的距离是大约100μm时,当放电气体是压力为0.4×105Pa的Ne/Xe混合物时,上述条件如下:大约td<1μs;大约tw<0.1μs,对应于高于20MHz的频率。
按照此参考文献,在驱动等离子体显示板的方法中,每个保持步骤包括一连串传统的保持放电和一连串稳定放电:
第一放电,由传统的保持脉冲产生,要在激发区域中产生离子电荷,以及
稳定放电,由具有较高频率的脉冲串产生,其频率适于稳定在激发区域中产生的离子电荷。
这样,保持脉冲用于激活或者“点火”稳定的放电。
高频的使用成为限制使用此驱动等离子体显示板的方法的主要电子问题;为了在较低频率获得稳定放电,需要增加分隔每对电极X和电极Y的距离,但是,则增加了获得传统的保持放电所需的电压,产生其他缺点。
更精确地:
为了施加用以起动施加“高频”信号之前的放电的传统“低频”保持信号,得益于利用足够接近的电极,以限制起动所需的电压;
为了施加“高频”信号,得益于利用分开得足够远的电极,从而防止离子在一个交替的周期期间到达电极之一,从而针对不是很高的频率获得想要的稳定效果。
参考文献US 5233272,特别是图2,描述了类似于共面板的等离子体板,其针对每个放电空间包括:共面并由相同的板支撑的阳极40和辅助电极50,以及由另一个板支撑的阴极60;与具有持久存储效应的传统共面板不同,没有介电层分隔电极,所以只能获得短持续时间的伪存储效应,也就是说由先前的放电或相邻的初始粒子的源所调节的存储效应;为了驱动这种板,按照此参考文献,将具有足够高振幅以获得一连串放电的脉冲施加在阳极和阴极之间;在施加这些脉冲期间,类似于保持脉冲,在共面电极40和50之间施加较高频率的脉冲,从而干扰离子的运动,使其在电极之间散射(第2列,20~21和40~41行;第3列,38~39和57~58行);这种干扰只是导致电极之间离子路径的延长(第3列,66行到第4列,4行),而与参考文献JP 10-171399一样,不能稳定这些离子;这里,施加较高频率脉冲的目的是为了改进短持续时间的存储效应并降低获得放电所需的脉冲振幅(第5列);按照此参考文献(尤其是“表格”第4列)和附图,为了获得想要的效果,重要的是分隔在其间施加较高频率脉冲的电极(在这种情况下,阴极和辅助电极)的距离小于分隔在其间施加传统的保持型信号的电极的距离;当想要在具有持久存储效应的等离子体板中稳定电荷时,这种安排与上面关于参考文献JP 10-171399所描述的安排相反。
参考文献JP 11-273576、JP2000-047631、JP2000-047632和JP2000-173482描述了特别适用于借助高频脉冲串获得稳定的放电的等离子体板结构;但是使用特定的板结构引起了其他成本问题。
本发明的目的是,通过提出以与参考文献JP 10-171399中所提出的不同的方式来使用传统共面板,从而能够在较低频率稳定放电,而不增加激发稳定的放电所需的电压,以避免上述缺点。
发明内容
为此,本发明的主题是一种驱动共面型等离子体显示板的方法,所述共面型等离子体显示板包括:
第一板,至少具有电极的第一阵列,
第二板,平行于第一板,至少具有电极对的第二阵列,其整体方向近似垂直于第一阵列的电极的整体方向,每对电极在其间留有位于第一阵列的电极与第二阵列的电极对的交点的放电区域,所述方法包括以下步骤:
至少施加一系列保持电压脉冲,从而在想要保持放电的每个交点区域中产生保持放电,以及
在所述脉冲中的至少一个产生保持放电之后,在横越所述区域的电极对的两个电极之间,施加具有足够高以稳定所述放电的频率的脉冲串,
其中,在所述电极对电极中的一个与横越所述区域的第一板的电极之间,施加所述保持电压脉冲;
在板的每个放电区域中,分隔电极对的电极的距离大于分隔横越所述区域的第一板的电极与在其间施加所述保持电压脉冲的电极的距离。
通常,第一板是“背”板,而第二板是面向观察要显示的图像的人的“面”板;电极的交点区域形成板的放电单元,可以按照施加在电极上的电压脉冲,相互独立地驱动、激发或不激发所述单元。
由于在相同的电极之间不施加保持电压脉冲作为放电稳定脉冲串,可以增加面板的稳定电极之间的距离,而不影响保持所需的电压;这样,使用了传统的共面结构,但是与现有技术不同:
在第一板的电极和第二板的电极之间施加保持脉冲;优选地,选择板,使其相互分开,从而能够利用传统的保持电压和传统的电子部件;于是,间隔通常在100和150μm之间;如果每个板均具有40μm厚的介电层,则分隔第一板的电极阵列与第二板的电极对阵列的距离在180和230μm之间;如果绝对需要,可以预期这些电极之间的距离等于90μm;
分隔第二板的电极对的距离大于分隔在其间施加保持脉冲的第一板的电极与第二板的电极之间的距离;因此,
共面电极之间的间隔或分隔成对电极的距离比现有技术中大得多,从而能够通过比现有技术更低频率的脉冲串,来稳定放电;甚至可以预期大于500μm的间隔。
本发明也可以具有以下的一个或多个特征:
以介电层覆盖电极对的第二阵列;从而,获得共面板的传统存储效应;
以较薄的保护与二次电子发射层覆盖所述第一板,并且所述第一板设置有荧光体层,用于吸收放电所产生的紫外线辐射,并通过面向所述板的正面的板发射可见光辐射,而且这些层在每个电极的交点区域中具有缝隙,从而在此缝隙中暴露所述较薄的下保护层的表面。
如果第一板是背板,在每个交点区域或每个单元,背板以及视情况而定,分隔这些区域的间隔的壁设有不同发射颜色一红、绿和蓝的荧光体;与现有技术不同,在面板和背板之间激发保持放电;为了促进在背板的激发,在放电的底部,需要由如氧化镁(MgO)等能够通过离子碰撞发射二次电子的材料来制作板的表面;为此,在这些区域中,去除荧光体层,从而暴露MgO基的下薄层;
在施加系列保持电压脉冲之前,在所述电极对的一个电极与第一板的所述电极之间施加寻址电压脉冲,从而在所述区域中产生寻址放电。
因此,能够利用现有技术的传统寻址方法,这些方法或者是其中在第一保持脉冲之前寻址板的所有行的方法(被称为“ADS”或“ADM”的方法),或者是本领域的技术人员所公知的其他寻址方法;
优选地,分隔在其间施加保持脉冲的第一板的电极与第二板的电极的距离小于250μm;此外,分隔在所述交点的相同电极对的电极的距离大于等于250μm;优选地,放电稳定脉冲串的所述频率小于150MHz,甚或小于等于60MHz;
在所述系列的保持脉冲中的每一个之后施加所述脉冲串,或者在施加所述系列保持脉冲时,一直连续施加所述脉冲串;后一种安排有利于使其可以稳定由保持放电所产生的最大数目的离子,从而能够进一步增加板的发光效率。同样使其可以限制由高频电源电路的开关所引起的电损耗。
本发明的主题也是一种共面型等离子体显示板,其被设计成应用按照本发明的驱动方法,所述共面型等离子体显示板包括:
第一板,至少具有电极的第一阵列;

电极的第一阵列与电极对的第二阵列之间的距离小于250μm,而分隔在交点的这对电极的距离大于等于250μm;

由于以较薄的保护与二次电子发射层覆盖所述第一板,并且所述第一板设置有荧光体层,用于吸收放电所产生的紫外线辐射,并通过面向所述板的正面的板发射可见光辐射,这些层在每个电极的交点区域中具有缝隙,从而在此缝隙中暴露所述较薄的下保护层的表面。

具体实施方式
按照优选实施例,并参照图1和图2,用以实现本发明的共面板包括:
背板(未示出),具有电极A的阵列,以具有隔板21、22的阵列的介电层1涂覆此阵列;
面板(未示出),具有电极对X、Y的阵列,以介电层3涂覆此阵列。
面板的电极X、Y的整体方向垂直于背板电极A的整体方向。
介电层1、3自身涂覆有非常薄的保护和二次电子发射层,这里此层(未示出)基于MgO。
这里,由平行于背板的电极A延伸的壁21和平行于面板的电极X、Y延声的的壁22形成隔板阵列,从而在一方面与电极A、在另一方面与成对电极X和Y的交点处,限定了放电区域4R、4G、4B。
背板的隔板的顶部支撑面板。
以荧光体层5R、5G、5B覆盖隔板的壁和背板的介电层1,当分别由来自区域4R、4G、4B中的局部放电的紫外线辐射激发时,荧光体层5R、5G、5B分别能够发射红色、绿色和蓝色;从而,图1和图2所示的相邻放电区域的组对应于用于实现本发明的图像显示板的一个图像元素或象素。
背板的电极A包括在隔板下延伸、跨越板的整个高度的导电总线61,其在每个放电区域处,设有突出分支62;给定区域4R、4G或4B中的每个分支62都与电极对X、Y中的横跨所述区域的电极X相对,并位于此区域的中间附近;与电极X的每个分支62的自由端相对,介电层1不包含荧光体,从而在荧光体层5R、5G、5B中形成缝隙7,从而,在此缝隙处暴露薄保护与二次电子发射层的氧化镁(MgO)基表面,使得此层的氧化镁可以接触到放电,从而其可以发射二次电子,有利于降低激发电压;因此,在这些缝隙7处,MgO基保护层的表面直接与放电区域4R、4G、4B相接触;最后,板每列象素包括一个电极A。
成对的电极X、Y在板的整个宽度上延伸;板每行象素包括一对X、Y;按照另一实施例,如参考文献US 5 162 701(NEC)中所述,一个电极X可以为两个相邻的象素行所共用。
最后,按照本发明的重要特征,在每个象素中电极对X、Y之间的距离大于背板的电极A的阵列与面板的电极对X、Y的阵列之间的距离,也就是说大于两板之间的距离和应用在这些阵列上的层的厚度的总和;后面将给出精确的数值。
利用公知的传统方法来生产上述共面板,但是在这里就不再进行描述了。
为了按照本发明来使用此共面板,将电极与用于第一阵列的列电极A和用于第二阵列的成对的电极X、Y的电压电源系统相连;此类电源系统是公知的,在这里不对其进行描述;通常,利用此系统,通过逐行扫描此板或一组行一组行地扫描此板,在板上显示图像;通常,每个扫描本身细分为几个子扫描,使其可以获得想要数目的灰度级;参照图3和图4,每个子扫描至少包括以下步骤:
首先,在每行要被激发的放电区域,在所述行的电极X和横越此区域的电极A之间施加寻址电压脉冲,从而在此区域中产生寻址放电DA(未示出);通过同时将信号SAA和SAX分别施加在电极A和X上,获得此电压脉冲;
接下来,按照本发明,同样在此区域中,在所述行的相同电极X和横越此区域的相同电极A之间施加一系列保持电压脉冲,从而在此区域中产生保持放电DH(在图3中示出);通过分别在电极A和X上交替地施加正信号SHX和SHA,获得这些电压脉冲;在此结构中,电极A和X被交替地用作阴极和阳极,而保持被称为“双极”;从现有技术所知的其他保持结构都是可能的,例如在参考文献EP 855692(NEC)中所述的“正”保持或“负”保持等;
最后,与保持脉冲同时,在所述行的电极X和成对的电极Y之间,至少施加一串足够高频率以在这些电极之间传送保持放电并形成稳定的放电DS的脉冲串;这里,通过将射频信号TSY施加在电极Y上,来获得此脉冲串;正如参考文献JP 10-171399中那样,在施加保持脉冲SHX或SHA和施加脉冲串TSY的开始之间经过的时间间隔必须小于由保持放电所引起的电荷反转所需的时间;优选地,与参考文献JP 10-171399中所描述的方法不同,在JP 10-171399中,在每个保持脉冲之前打断高频脉冲串,在这里,没有任何中断地施加高频脉冲串,直到与所述子扫描相关的保持周期的结束;这种安排使其能够稳定由保持放电产生的最大数目的离子,以进一步改进板的发光效率,由于这样限制了消耗能量的高频开关操作的次数。
如图4中最后的时序图所示,上述实现本发明的方式产生一连串放电DA,然后是一系列DH、DS;从而,可以看出保持放电DA被用于激发或加强稳定的放电DS。
因为缝隙7暴露了与放电区域直接接触的MgO基保护层的区域,获得放电所述的保持电压仍然具有传统的数值;此外,这些缝隙的出现使其可以限制对荧光体层的破坏。
由于使用了高频脉冲和由此所导致的稳定放电,极大地改进了板的发光效率。
按照本发明,由于保持放电DH和稳定放电DS不在相同的电极之间延伸(在第一种情况下是X和A,在第二种情况下是X和Y),可以独立地进行选择:
电极X和A之间的距离足够小,以能够利用与通常的等离子体板的电子部件相兼容的传统的保持电压值;
电极X和Y之间的距离足够大,以能够利用较低的频率来稳定放电;此距离最好大于等于250μm;为了进一步降低放电稳定频率,也可以设想500μm和1000μm之间的距离;共面电极之间间隔的高数值有利于避免针对这些电极,不得不使用透明导电材料,由于这样的间隔提供了通向面板足够的光学孔径;结果,如图1所示,可以利用窄而不透明、从而便宜的共面电极。
以共面电极X和Y之间500μm和1000μm之间的间隔,利用传统组成和压力的放电气体,通常可以在低于100MHz,尤其是在60MHz和30MHz之间稳定放电。
优选地,保持脉冲SHX、SHA的频率通常在1kHz和50kHz之间。
这样,由于本发明,可以通过诸如扩宽共面电极之间的间隔等简单而便宜的调整,利用传统的保持电压和相对较低的稳定频率,而利用传统的共面板获得稳定的等离子体放电。
除了已经描述的类型之外的其他类型的共面板可以被用以实现本发明,例如,包括大量电极阵列的板、其中行电极为两行相邻的放电区域所共用的板、如参考文献US 5 825 128(FUJI)中那样以交错结构排列放电区域的板以及如参考文献EP 945890(THOMSON)中所述的共面电极的电极对位于背面上的板。
除了所描述的寻址方法之外的其他寻址方法可以被用于实现本发明,尤其是那些提供了初始化步骤和/或消除步骤的方法。
Claims (11)
1、一种驱动共面型等离子体显示板的方法,所述共面型等离子体显示板包括:
第一板,具有至少一个第一电极(A)阵列,
第二板,平行于第一板,具有至少一个第二电极对(X,Y)阵列,其整体方向近似垂直于第一阵列的电极(A)的整体方向,每对电极(X,Y)在其间留有位于第一阵列的电极(A)与第二阵列的电极对(X,Y)的交点的放电区域(4R,4G,4B),
所述方法包括以下步骤:
施加至少一系列保持电压脉冲,从而在想要保持放电的每个放电区域(4R,4G,4B)中产生保持放电(DH),以及
在所述系列的保持电压脉冲中的每一个保持电压脉冲之后,在横越所述交点区域的电极对的两个电极之间,施加具有足够高频率的以稳定所述放电的脉冲串(TSY);或者在施加所述保持电压脉冲系列时,在横越所述交点区域的电极对的两个电极之间,一直连续地施加具有足够高频率的以稳定所述放电的脉冲串(TSY),
其特征在于:
在所述电极对电极中的一个(X)与横越所述交点区域的第一板的电极(A)之间,施加所述保持电压脉冲(SHA,SHX);
在显示板的每个放电区域中,所述电极对的两个电极(X,Y)之间的距离大于在其间施加所述保持电压脉冲(SHA,SHX)的电极对电极(X,Y)中的一个电极(X)与横越所述区域的第一板的电极(A)之间的距离;
以介电层(3)覆盖所述第二电极对(X,Y)阵列。
2、按照权利要求1所述的方法,其特征在于由于以较薄的保护与二次电子发射层覆盖所述第一板,并且所述第一板设置有荧光体层(5R、5G、5B),用于吸收放电所产生的紫外线辐射,并通过面向所述显示板的正面的板发射可见光辐射,而且这些所述的荧光体层(5R、5G、5B)在所述的交点的放电区域(4R、4G、4B)中具有缝隙(7),从而在此缝隙(7)中暴露所述较薄的保护与二次电子发射层的表面。
3、按照前述权利要求之一所述的方法,其特征在于还包括在施加系列保持电压脉冲之前,在所述电极对的一个电极(X)与第一板的所述电极(A)之间施加寻址电压脉冲(SAA,SAX),从而在所述区域中产生寻址放电(DA)。
4、按照前述权利要求之一所述的方法,其特征在于:
在其间施加保持电压脉冲的电极对电极(X,Y)中的一个的电极(X)与横越所述区域的第一板的电极(A)之间的距离小于250μm;
所述的交点的放电区域(4R、4G、4B)的电极对的两个电极(X,Y)之间的距离大于等于250μm。
5、按照权利要求4所述的方法,其特征在于所述的以稳定所述放电的脉冲串(TSY)的频率小于150MHz。
6、按照权利要求5所述的方法,其特征在于所述的以稳定所述放电的脉冲串(TSY)的频率小于等于60MHz。
7、按照权利要求1到6之一所述的方法,其特征在于在所述系列的保持脉冲(SHX,SHA)中的每一个之后施加所述脉冲串(TSY)。
8、按照权利要求1到6之一所述的方法,其特征在于在施加所述系列保持脉冲时,一直连续施加所述脉冲串(TSY)。
9、一种共面型等离子体显示板,能够用于实现如前述权利要求之一所述的驱动方法,所述共面型等离子体显示板包括:
第一板,具有至少一个第一电极(A)阵列;
第二板,平行于第一板,具有至少一个第二电极对(X,Y)阵列,其整体方向近似垂直于第一阵列的电极(A)的整体方向,每对电极在其间留有位于第一阵列的电极(A)与第二阵列的电极对(X,Y)的交点的放电区域(4R,4G,4B);
其特征在于,在每个放电区域中,电极对(X,Y)的两个电极之间的距离大于与所述区域相交的第一板的电极(A)与所述电极对(X,Y)中的任意一个电极之间的距离;以及以介电层(3)覆盖所述第二电极对(X,Y)阵列。
10、按照权利要求9所述的等离子体显示板,其特征在于在每个放电区域中,与所述区域相交的第一板的电极(A)与电极对(X,Y)中的任意一个电极之间的距离小于250μm,而所述电极对(X,Y)的两个电极之间的距离大于等于250μm。
11、按照权利要求10所述的等离子体显示板,其特征在于由于以较薄的保护与二次电子发射层覆盖所述第一板,并且所述第一板设置有荧光体层(5R,5G,5B),用于吸收放电所产生的紫外线辐射,并通过面向所述显示板的正面的板发射可见光辐射,这些所述的荧光体层(5R,5G,5B)在所述的交点的放电区域(4R,4G,4B)中具有缝隙(7),从而在此缝隙(7)中暴露所述较薄的保护与二次电子发射层的表面。
