Fig. 7, une coupe transversale suivant E-E Fig. 8,
Liquid clutch and progressive gear change device. The object of the invention is a fluid clutch and progressive speed change device making it possible to obtain, using only two pedals, the starting, the progressive acceleration of the speed, the direct drive. at high speed, the progressive reduction of speed, and reverse gear, the device in question being characterized in that the transmission of the movement is effected by means of piston-driven pumps controlled by a swash plate actuated by a variable-radius connecting rod, and similar receiver pumps, actuating,
by means of a second oscillating plate, a crank of invariable radius, these various transmission members being contained in a housing, mounted on ball bearings, which directly transmits the movement, when the maximum speed is reached; and remains motionless when this speed is not reached.
By way of example and to facilitate the understanding of the description, the accompanying drawings have been shown :. Fig. 1, a vertical longitudinal section through the axis, FIG. 2, a horizontal section through the axis, Fig. 3, a cross section according to FIG. 4, a cross section along B-B, FIG. 5, a cross section along C-C, FIG. 6, a cross section along D-D, . Fig. 7, a cross section along E-E Fig. 8,
a cross section along F-F, Fig. 9, a cross section along G-G.
In the change of speed, the motor shaft and the receiver shaft are on the same axis; they are joined by a casing 1 carried by the ball bearings 2 and 3 and held in the longitudinal direction by the stops at bil the 4. This casing contains the movement transmission members, constituted by motor pumps 8 controlled by a variable radius my level 15, and receiver pumps 9 actuating a constant radius connecting rod. Each motive pump is constituted by a hollow conical body 8 which comprises a cylindrical part in which the piston 10 of this pump operates.
The conical part acts as a distributor and is pierced for this by two series of lights, one in line with each of the compartments 6 and 7.
This distributor is adjusted, lapped, clans a 3D plug and is driven by an alternating rotational movement by the action of a fork lever 33 controlled by the eccentrics 34 via the rollers 35.
There are two eccentrics so that the gaets always turn in the same direction; they act alternately.
The eccentrics are integral with the motor shaft via the body of the variable radius level 15.
As a result of this movement, the lights of the distributor come to be placed alternately opposite equal lights drilled in the plug and corresponding to compartments 6 and 7.
The dimensions of the lumens are such that the flow speed of the liquid passing through them never exceeds that of the pistons.
There is play take-up to compensate: wear and tear; it suffices to turn the nut 37 screwed inside the valve and resting on the bearing surface 38 of the distributor.
This distributor is balanced in all directions, from the point of view of the pressure, transversely due to the symmetry of the lights, longitudinally because the projection on a cross section of the surfaces subjected to the pressure is the same in the both directions.
The plugs are adjusted lapped in the cylindrical body 5 and fixed by the acorn nuts 41.
Receiver pumps are similar to motor pumps.
The motor pumps are actuated by the variable radius crank 15. This is constituted by a part 48 which has a keyed cylindrical part at the end of the motor shaft and a sector with two cheeks inside which Slides are cut in an arc of a circle having for center the axis of the gimbal.
In these slides can move a slider 49 which constitutes the bearing bearing the ball bearings of the shaft 14.
This displacement of the bearing 49 in the direction of the radius is produced by the action of the lever 50 keyed on an axis passing through the two cheeks of the sector. This axis carries at each of its ends a cam lever 51. with which engages a tooth 52 which. is integral with the rods 18. The rods 18 are guided in grooves with tongues 53 cut in the cheeks of the sector. The profile of the cams is cut so that the rods 18 are moved.
uniform, the bearing 49 moves with a uniform movement to the neutral point where it remains motionless for an instant, thus producing a stopping time of the car, to then continue its movement beyond., which produces h running back. Instead of teeth 52, we could have rollers, the profile of the cam levers would be modified accordingly.
To each cam lever 51 is attached a U-shaped part 85 which can turn around the same axis and one branch of which is profiled with the cam on the right side, while the other is subjected to the pressure of a spring 86 s' leaning on the outside of the left side. The first branch and the opposite face of the lever constitute a kind of clamp gripping the two faces of the. (slow 52 so that this always works without play.
The rod control mechanism 18 is formed as follows: The drive shaft carries a base 54 opposing the longitudinal displacement of a hollow screw 55 which can rotate with gentle friction on this shaft. The nut 56 of this screw is extended by a tubular part with a groove in which a drag ring 57 can rotate; on this ring are assembled the rods 18 and the disc 29. The ring 57 is driven in the rotational movement of the motor shaft as well as the rods 18 and the disc 29.
The gear wheel 58 and the friction cone 59 are integral with the motor shaft by means of a tubular part 60 on which these parts are keyed and which will be assembled on the cylindrical part of the crank 15 This tubular part has two grooves in which the trin gles 18 are guided. The gear wheel 61 is integral with the nut 56 from the point of view of rotation by means of a tube 62 to. interior of which are hollowed out longi tudinal grooves in which slide keys integral with the nut. The crown 63 can rotate with gentle friction on the tubular part 60 and carries double satellites 64 keyed together and meshing with the wheels 58 and 61; the numbers of teeth of these two wheels are slightly different.
This same crown 63 carries studs 65 which make it integral with the triple-sided friction cone 66 from the point of view of the. rotation; in addition, between these two parts 63 and 66 are interposed springs Cil which push the. cone 66 against the cone 59 integral with the motor shaft. It follows that the nut 56, the wheels 58 and 61, the satellites 64, the crown 63, the cone 66 are driven by the cone 59 in the rotation of the motor shaft, and that these parts can even intervene with the similar group pertaining to the screw as a flywheel. The crown 68 has a flat face facing the flat face of the motor of the cone 66, it can move longitudinally under the action of the rods 69 controlled by the acceleration pedal, but it cannot turn.
The control of these members is made, on the one hand, by means of the rods 69 action born by the accelerator pedal and acting on the crown 68, on the other hand, by means of the rods 77 actuated by the pedal of r ' duction and acting in the opposite direction to, rod 69, on crown 68 '.
On each face of the cylindrical body 5, there is provided a supply pipe 78. FIG. 7 with check valve which ends with a pipe (not shown) to supply the oil which must compensate for any leaks. The piping only indicates the device allowing it to pass from the outside to the inside of the casing ;. it has a groove 79 in which slides with gentle friction. a ring with an internal groove lined with leather in the shape of a torus of revolution open on the inside and fixed by screws and flexible blades.
The ring is fixed when the housing rotates. The oil arrives through the pipe 80 and leaves the interior through the pipe 81. From this point leaves a pipe which divides in two to terminate at the check valves. There may be a third connection for lubrication. The oil is supplied by a charged reservoir or by a pressurized lubricating pump.
The quantity of oil between the driving pistons and the receivers is constant, while the volume varies periodically as a result of the sinusoidal law of movement of the pistons and due to the inertia of the parts on the motor side and on the receiver side at large speeds: With sinusoidal laws shifted to 120, for example, there are somehow six pulses per revolution of very little amplitude, but none negligible because of the incompressibility of the liquid and high speeds.
For this reason, the central partition is crossed at points 82 'by small tubes in which operates a piston fixed to the end of a coil spring capable of supporting the pressure and of bending the necessary quantity and of which the the other end is assembled in a cap screwed onto one of the bases at points 82. These pistons and springs are not shown in the drawing. The central partition is thus endowed with sufficient elasticity to obey the variations in volume of each compartment, the sum being constant and equal to the volume of the oil, while resisting the pressure. There is therefore never a vacuum, the suction side collects leaks through the supply tubing.
The stroke of the pistons is limited to a sufficient quantity so that communication cannot be established between the two compartments in the event of a spring breaking.
The operation of the apparatus thus constituted is as follows: The transmission of movement is effected by means of a system of pumps installed in the casing and acting on a constant quantity of liquid interposed between the pistons of the driving pumps and those receiver pumps. The driving pumps 8 suck the liquid in a first compartment 6 of the cylindrical body 5, and push it back into the second compartment 7; the receiving pumps are actuated by the pressurized liquid which they receive in compartment 7 and which they return to compartment 6.
The distribution is effected by means of the wood bucket 32 which is driven by an alternating rotational movement by the action of the four-wheel lever 33 which oscillates under the action of the double ex centric .34 rotated by the. tree 14. We can see very clearly from fig. 6 of the appended drawings how this movement occurs: the eccentrics driven by the shaft 14 act on the rollers 35 which are carried by the lever 33, the two rollers 35 of the same lever each by that of the two eccentrics 34 which correspond are not pushed back at the same time, but successively and the lever 3,91 enters into oscillation, causing in its movement the nut 37 and the plug 32.
This movement brings the lights of the plug 32 into coincidence with those of the cylinder 8 which correspond to the compartment 6 during the suction stroke of the piston 10. The lights corresponding to the compartment 7 are at this same moment closed. The liquid from compartment 6 fills the pump body and will be; expelled in the compartimeni: 7 at the time of the compression stroke of the udder ton ppndani; which the openings of the lights are reversed.
The opposite receiving pump 9 having a distribution opposite to that which has just been described will operate under the same conditions, but by transforming the pressure of the liquid contained in the compartment 7, in reciprocating movement of the pistons 10 'and, consequently, in rotational movement of the shaft 42 by means of the constant radius level 28.
Or see qae, the engine speed remaining constant, the action on the acceleration pedals and (the reduction produces the variation of the stroke of the driving pistons, and consequently the variation of the pressure of the liquid contained in the compartment 7, which causes the variation in the speed of the driven pistons and consequently that of the shaft 42.
The number of pumps can be any; the accompanying drawing shows three for each category, equally spaced on a circumference; this arrangement gives a substantially uniform bit rate. The receptors are interposed between the motor coaches on the same circumference or on another concen tric. The pistons 10 of the driving pumps are actuated by means of connecting rods 11 by a plate 12 oscillating around two cross axes 13, a device similar to a cardan shaft. This plate is itself controlled by a shaft 14 which is integral with it and which describes a cone whose top is located in the center of the gimbal, but without rotating on itself. This shaft 14 is manc @ uvxé by a variable radius crank 15.
When the radius of this crank is zero, the shaft 14 is stationary; this is the stop. Yes! this radius takes a value in the direction opposite to that indicated in fig. 1 is reverse gear.
The movement of the rods 18 produces the variation in the radius of the crank as follows: the tooth 52 of the rod 18 engages with the cam lever 51 and thus causes its rotation and that of the lever 50. The latter is articulated on the slide 15 and causes it to move in its slide, thus giving the crank variable radii.
As long as the radius of the crank 15 has not reached its maximum, the casing is immobile. It is maintained in this state of immobility by the female friction cone 19 which is integral with it from the point of view of rotation by the effect of the studs 20 embedded in the part 21 which itself is keyed to the extension 22 of the housing; but. cone 19 can move longitudinally and is supported by the action of the springs 23 on the male cone 24 which is fixed, which keeps the housing stationary. The immobility is further consolidated by pawls 25 which lean on a hook wheel 26 carried by a fixed brake 27 of any system.
The pawls oppose movement in both directions.
In the event that the adhesion of the cones 19 and 24 is not sufficient to immobilize. the casing, the dormant brake comes into action, by friction of the discs 27 clamped by the spring 27 'against each other.
But when the radius of the crank 15 has reached its maximum, it is equal to that of the crank 28 on the receiving side; the receiver shaft rotates at the same speed as the motor shaft. At this moment the housing 1. starts to move as follows:
The rods 18 which control by their displacement parallel to the axis, the variation of the radius of the crank are integral with the dis- (read 29; when they approach their end of travel to the right, which corresponds to the maximum radius of this crank, the disc 29 first releases the pawls of the gold mant brake by lifting the conical rollers 30; it then comes to rest against the plate 31, compresses the springs 23, undergoes their action, takes off the cone 19 the supper 24 fixed, releases the casing and drives it into rotation.
Say it is flat, the crankcase will put. a little time to acquire the @@ ites @ e of trees: in re @% reed. it will ask for - that a very low torque. This disc could have a conical part if we wanted a faster setting of the housing. In fig. 1, 1 <<direct socket is established; in fig. 2, the gear shift is in neutral.
When action is taken to reduce the speed, reverse movement of the rods 18, direct engagement will cease by an operation opposite to that which has just been indicated with the difference that stopping the crankcase will be very rapid, because it will be the friction of the cones 19 and 24 which will produce it. The pawls 25 of the golden brake. mant will not come into contact with the ratchet until the housing has stopped; the dormant brake would only be called upon to play in the event of an improper operation, consisting, for example, of approaching a very steep slope in direct engagement and of eliminating this direct engagement in full descent.
Consolidation of the crankcase stop is necessary, because if the friction of the cones 19 and 24 is sufficient to produce this stop quickly, it could be insufficient to maintain immobility when the crankcase would have to react against a torque. very important which can occur at low speed. The consolidation device could be eliminated by replacing the cones 19 and 24 with a more powerful brake, but there would be fear of an action too violent and too rapid to produce the immobilization. The crankcase and its contents are perfectly balanced in view of the centrifugal force.
The gyroscopic influence is not detrimental, because it is only possible to drive in direct drive on curves of very large radius where this influence is negligible, and when this direct drive is removed, the housing is stationary. .
The movement of the rods 18 and of the say 29 is obtained as follows: When the conductor acts on. the acceleration pedal, the crown 68 comes to bear against the flat face of the cone 66, take off this cone of 59 by undergoing the pressure of the springs 67; it thus switches with the 59 and produces the stop of the crown 63 carrying the satellites. These controlled by the wheel 58 yes continues to rotate integral with the motor shaft will drive the wheel 61 integral with the nut, but with a somewhat lower speed due to the difference in the number of teeth of the wheels 58 and 61 .
This will result in an etère difference in speed of rotation between the screw and the nut, the screw rotating at the speed of the shaft, because it is secured to it by the cone 70 which plays the same role for the screw as the plain 59. for the nut. This will cause the longitudinal displacement of the rods 18 and hence the. speed variation.
The engine being assumed to be running and the shaft 14 in neutral, that is to say the vehicle being stationary, this movement of the trin- @les 18 controls by the tooth 52 an increase in the radius of the. crank starting from zero. The plate 12 tilts progressively on the axis and the pumps come into action which produces the start (the ma clune.
The rods 19 continue their movement and the speed increases as long as the driver presses on the. accelerator pedal and, until: the maximum speed, corresponding to direct drive, is reached.
The only action on the accelerator pedal therefore produces successively starting, acceleration and direct drive to the. great speed. .
The reduction pedal 77 acts in reverse: it presses the crown 68 'against the. fi @ this plane of the cone 66 ', detaches it from the cone 70 and puts pressure on the. fixed crown 71 'which immobilizes it: the satellites 64' then move and drive the wheel 61 'and the wheel 76, integral with the screw, but with a speed a little less than that of the shaft as a result of the difference in the number of teeth of the wheels 58 'and 61'.
The difference in rotational speed thus obtained will cause the backward movement of the rods 18 and the decrease in the radius of the crank 15 to zero; the movement of the rods 18 continuing to occur, the radius of the crank will become negative, which will correspond to reverse gear. It can therefore be seen that the only one: ctioa on the reduction pedal produces successively a progressive reduction in speed to zero, a stopping time, then reverse gear, with progressive acceleration, up to the limit imposed by the dimensions of the slide l5.
If we want to obtain a very rapid acceleration, we will push the pedal 69 fully, the third face of the cone 66 will come to bear against the cone 71 which is fixed and the immobilization of the axes, of the satellites will be almost instantaneous. 'When the nut has reached the end of its travel and the direct drive is established ,. the conical rebate 7 2 comes to bear against the rollers 73 which act on the rods 69 in the opposite direction to the pedal, return this pedal under the motorist's foot and bring the cone 66 into contact with the cone 59, thus restoring the solidarity of the axes of the satellites ave, 2 the motor shaft.
The springs 67 are adjusted so that this recovery is almost instantaneous. The abandonment of the, destroyed pedal, the contact between the, rebate 72 and the. rollers 73.
It has been said above that the gear wheel 61 is integral with the nut; it is through a. ratchet 74 always in gear which is provided to allow the gearshift to be brought back to neutral in the event of accidental engine stalling. If the wheel 75 which carries the ratchet ring is rotated in the opposite direction to the rotation of the motor, the nut alone is dragged in the rotation, without the gears, it can thus be quickly brought back into the neutral position.
If we have to practice this operation during forward travel, it can act on the wheel 76 which controls the screw; if it is during reverse gear, it can act on the wheel 75. The device making it possible to act on the wheels 75 and 76 is not shown, it depends on the arrangement of the chassis. It may be a shaft controlled by hand and carrying a sliding pinion which, when it meshes with one of the wheels, causes a pawl to fall on the other which keeps it motionless. The rods 7 7 are; actuated by the reduction pedal and play the same role with respect to the screw as the rods 69 with respect to the nut.
