Ferrochrome manufacturing process. In the main patent, a process for manufacturing manganese by means of manganese oxide has been described.
The present additional patent relates to the manufacture of ferrochrome according to a similar process, starting from a mass, containing chromium and iron in the oxidized state, for example of a mixture of iron sesquioxide and chromium or natural chromite, added if necessary with a new quantity of iron oxide to obtain ferro-chromium at the desired content.
According to this process, the quantity of charcoal necessary to obtain the reduction is mixed with said mass, and this mixture is subjected to the action of a flame obtained by the combustion of finely pulverized fuel in strongly heated air, in pro portion determined so that this combustion gives practically no carbonic acid.
The fuel can be constituted, for example, by coal flour, which must be fine enough for its combustion to be instantaneous, or almost instantaneous; and be in a sufficient proportion to reduce the carbonic acid resulting from combustion, or supplied by the coal and the water vapor which the coal or the air which projects the latter could bring, so that the flame produced does not almost exclusively composed of carbon monoxide, hydrogen or nitrogen, gases which are strictly inactive with respect to the alloy released, which is, by definition, highly oxidizable.
The coal thus projected in the form of flour will preferably be a lean coal.
The coal flour can be replaced, for example, by oils or any hydrocarbons, finely pulverized, on the condition that the quantity of air employed is determined to burn the carbon in the form of carbon monoxide, and that the hydrogen remains no burnt.
The combustion of fine coal flour in the form of carbon monoxide makes it possible to obtain a temperature of approximately 2.200 C, when the air used is strongly heated beforehand in a suitable device, and this temperature can be exceeded if the coal flour or hydrocarbon .out themselves previously cliau $ ës.
For carrying out said process, it is possible, for example, to use a reverberation furnace with heat recovery chambers such as that which is described, by way of example; in the main patent.
When the furnace is brought to the proper temperature, mixed iron and chromium sesquioxy or pre-mixed natural bromite are introduced onto the hearth in the quantity of carbon necessary and sufficient to effect the complete reduction. You can also add the necessary fondant.
In the case of the use of natural chromite, it is possible to add to it, if necessary, a new quantity of iron oxide to obtain the ferrochrome at the desired content.
Under the action of the high temperature of the furnace, the oxygenated compound (sesquioxides or chromite) is reduced by the carbon giving ferrochrome and carbon monoxide, without any reverse reaction being able to occur since the flame , almost exclusively composed of inert gases, has no effect on the alloy produced. 1 - The reduced metals melt at the same time as the gangue combines with the added flux and forms the slag which floats.
The slag and ferrochrome are poured in, after refining if necessary.
The gases produced by the furnace being composed mainly of carbon monoxide, nitrogen and a small fraction of hydrogen are of great value as fuel.
The process can also be carried out advantageously, for example in a horizontal or preferably slightly inclined rotary kiln, established under the conditions indicated in the main patent.
