Process for the production of gas with a high carbon monoxide content by gasification of solid fuels. We know that by gasifying solid fuels with oxygen mixed with water or carbon dioxide, we can obtain gases very rich in oxide. of carbon which can be usefully employed either for the production of certain oxygenated organic compounds (such as methanol and other similar products),
either for the production of hydrogen or nitrogen-hydrogen mixtures suitable for the synthesis of ammonia, or also as combustible gases, thanks to the high power they possess.
The operation of the gasifiers used in the gasification mentioned above presents some difficulties in practice, both in the case where gasifiers are used in which the ashes are discharged in the form of solid slag, and when the ashes are discharged in the molten state.
These difficulties depend -in the case of the solid slag from flame outlets or air inlet during the ash removal operation, operation -which therefore includes the need to suspend the operation of the gasifier and, in, the case of an ash-fusing gasifier, due to the fact that the refractory materials which come into contact with the molten ash, although they are chosen of special quality - sooner or later deteriorate,
thus making their substitution necessary.
However, it has been found that, if in a gaso- gene for the gasification of a solid fuel by injection of gas containing oxygen, for example formed of oxygen and steam of water, or of oxygen and of carbon dioxide, care is taken that the composition and the speed of the gases injected are such that the combustion can take place in a very lively and rapid manner, and, consequently, to high temperature,
the ashes undergo a chemical transformation which prevents them from agglomerating, and in this way they can be obtained in the form of a very fine powder, which is carried away by the very gases leaving the gasifier.
Under these conditions, certain compounds of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals contained in the ashes can be transformed into the corresponding oxides or hydroxides, and consequently, by washing the gases leaving the gasifier in water, so that they are suitably cooled, this water dissolves said oxides and hydroxides and fixes completely or almost completely carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds which these gases may contain:
It should be noted that this washing is not always sufficient to retain all the ashes, consequently the condenser could be followed by one or more powder chambers, possibly provided with precipitators, to obtain the. complete separation of ash from gases.
Advantages of the present process derive from the fact that the gasifier can run absolutely continuously, and that the materials of which it is constructed can have a longer life, as well as from the fact that the alkali compounds can be used. Calino-earth al contained in the ash for the removal of carbon dioxide and sulfur compounds contained in the gas obtained.
