Le composé spirannique de formule
EMI1.1
EMI1.3
pour obtenir un composé de formule:
EMI1.4
Housse, Modem Syn
thetic Reactions , 2' édition, Benjamin Inc. , Menlo Park
(1972), p. 293].
On

REVENDICATION I
The spiran compound of formula
EMI1.1
or 2, 6, 10, i 0-Tetramethyl-1 -oxaspiro- [4.5] -decan-6-ol is of great interest to the perfume and flavoring industry.
Compound I also has additional interest, as an intermediate product in the preparation of spiran compounds of formula:
EMI1.2
in which the symbol R represents an acyl residue containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, compounds which are also of interest to the perfume and aroma industry for their remarkable organoleptic properties.
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of compound I as defined above, characterized in that:
a) a compound of formula is epoxidized:
EMI1.3
to obtain a compound of formula:
EMI1.4
b) the above epoxidized compound is subjected to catalytic hydrogenation to obtain a compound of formula:
EMI1.5
and finally reduced the compound IV thus obtained.
The first step of said process consists of the epoxidation of 2, 6, 10, i O-tetramethyl-i -oxaspiro- [4.5] -deca-3,6-diene (II). According to a particular implementation of the process of the invention, said epoxidation is carried out using an organic peracid such as peracetic, perbenzoic, monochloroperbenzoic, perphthalic or performic acid, in a chlorinated solvent such as chloroform, methylene chloride, trichlorethylene or dichloroethane. Preferably, peracetic acid is used in methylene chloride. Peracetic acid can be prepared in situ by the action of hydrogen peroxide on acetic acid in the presence of small amounts of sulfuric acid according to conventional methods [see for example H. O.
Case, Modem Syn
thetic Reactions, 2nd edition, Benjamin Inc., Menlo Park
(1972), p. 293].
Buffering agents such as alkaline salts of organic acids
niques can be incorporated into the epoxidation medium. We can
use for example formate, acetate, propionate,
sodium or potassium butyrate, oxalate, citrate or tartrate
sium. Preferably sodium acetate is used.
The product resulting from said epoxidation, 6, 7-epoxy-2, 6,
10,10-tetramethyl-1 -oxaspiro- [4.5] -dec-3-en (III) is then
subjected to catalytic hydrogenation, to give the compound
corresponding saturated spiran (IV).
The hydrogenation of compound III is carried out in the presence of a
metallic catalyst, according to conventional techniques. We
can use for this purpose a catalyst such as platinum oxide,
palladium on carbon or Raney nickel for example, in
presence of an inert organic solvent such as an alcohol such as
methanol, ethanol or isopropanol for example, or a hydro
aliphatic or aromatic carbide, hexane or toluene by
example. Said hydrogenation is preferably carried out by pre
sence of palladium on charcoal and ethyl alcohol.
As indicated above, the product resulting from said
hydrogenation is finally reduced to compound I. Said reduc
tion, which in fact consists in causing the opening of the oxiran ring
nique of compound IV in order to obtain the tertiary alcohol of formula I,
is carried out using an alkali metal aluminum hydride, such as
lithium aluminum hydride. The latter reagent indeed offers
the advantage of promoting an opening with good returns
reguloselective of the oxirannic cycle [see on this subject: H. O. House,
Modern Synthetic Reactions, 2nd edition, Benjamin Inc.,
Menlo Park (1972) p. 103 and following].
The unsaturated spiran compound II used as a starting material in the above process can be easily obtained from a compc
EMI1.6
by treatment of the latter by means of an acid dehydrating agent [see on this subject Swiss Patent No. 544733].
A subject of the invention is also the use of compound I.
obtained according to the process defined above, as starting material for the preparation of the oxygenated spiran compounds of formula V. Said use is characterized in that the compound I.
The esterification of the tertiary alcohol of formula I is carried out according to the usual techniques, for example by treating said alcohol by means of an acyl halide, preferably the chloride, in the presence of an organic base such as N, N-dimethylaniline for example.
Thus, 2,6,10,10-tetramethyl-1-oxaspiro [4.5] dec-6-yl acetate is obtained from 2, 6, 10, 10-tetramethyl-I-oxa -spiro [4.5] decan-6-ol, by treatment of the latter with acetyl chloride, in the presence of N, N-dimethylaniline.
The formate of 2, 6, 10, 10-tetramethyl-1-oxaspiro- [4.5] -déc-6-yl on the other hand, is obtained by treating said alcohol by means of formylimidazole, according to the method described in Liebigs Ann.
Chem. 655, 95 (1962).
The invention will be illustrated in more detail with the aid of the examples below. In said examples, the temperatures are indicated in degrees centigrade and the abbreviations used represent the usual meaning in the art.

Example 3:
2, 6, 10, 10-Tetramethyl-1-oxaspiro- [4,5] -dec-6-yl acetate
5.9 g (0.075 M) of acetyl chloride were added over 30 min, with stirring, to a mixture maintained at 20 of 2.12 g (0.01 M) of 2, 6, 10, 10-tetramethyl-1 -oxaspiro- [4,5] -decan-6-ol and 10.9 g (0.09 M) of N, N-dimethylaniline. After being stored for 2 days at room temperature, the reaction mixture was heated under reflux for 3 hours. After being treated with 50 ml of ether, the reaction mixture was filtered and the resulting filtrate poured onto ice and acidified with 10% H2SO4 in H2O.
The organic phase was then washed with a saturated NaHCO3 solution until neutral, finally dried. evaporated and distilled according to the usual techniques to give 2.5 g of a product having Eb. 90-100 / 0.1 Torr. After recrystallization from an ethanol-water mixture, 1.9 g (75%) of the desired ester were isolated.
