The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of oxygenated alicyclic compounds of formula
EMI1.1
having a methyl group in position 4 or 5, as indicated by the dotted lines. and in which the symbol R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl residue containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms. Said process is characterized in that the epoxidation of a compound of formula
EMI1.2
wherein the position of the methyl group and the symbol R are defined as for formula 1.
The compounds of formula I have interesting organoleptic properties and are therefore very popular in the perfume industry such as that of aromas. Their use as perfuming and flavoring agents is moreover described in Swiss patents N '547850 and 547810 [patent applications N 14784 71 and 15910 72].
According to the method of the invention. the compounds of formula I are obtained by epoxidation of the compounds of formula 11. Said epoxidation can be carried out by means of an organic peracid. such as performic acids. peracetic. perbenzolque. monoperbenzolque. perphthalic or trifluoroperacetic for example. in the presence of an inert organic solvent such as chloroform. methylene chloride. trichlorethylene or dichloroethane, for example.
Said epoxidation can also be carried out in a bridged tam medium. An alkali salt of an organic acid such as formic acid can be used for this purpose. acetic. propionic, butyric.
Oxalic. citric or tartaric for example. Sodium or potassium acetate in methylene chloride is preferably used.
The epoxidation reaction can be carried out at a widely varying temperature. However, the best final product yields are obtained by operating at a temperature close to or lower than 0 C., preferably between approximately -10 and approximately t) C. Operating at higher temperatures, the formation of a Diepoxide of formula
EMI1.3
having a methyl group in position 4 or 5 as well as the formation of a monoepoxide of formula
EMI1.4
the methyl group position of which is defined as above.
According to a particular operating mode of the process of the invention. said epoxidation can also be carried out using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and an organic nitrile, at a pH of about 8.
For this purpose, benzonitrile is used more precisely, in a medium capable of maintaining a pH of about 8 during the reaction, such as an aqueous solution of sodium or potassium bicarbonate for example [see on this subject J. Org. Chem. 26, 659 (1961) and Tetrahedron 18, 763 (1962)].
Organic peracids. used for the epoxidation of the exocyclic double bond of the compounds of formula I, can be prepared in situ>,. by treating an organic acid with hydrogen peroxide. in the presence of a mineral acid, according to the usual techniques [see for example: H.O. Couverture, Modem Synthetic Reactions. Benjamin. Inc., Nenv York (1965), p. 105 and following].
The alicyclic compounds of formula l. obtained according to the process of the invention. can occur in various stereoisomeric forms. Therefore. for example. given the presence of an alkyl substituent. of an epoxide function and of 2 hydrogen atoms in position 2 and 7. the various isomeric forms of a compound of formula I can be represented by means of the general formula
EMI1.5
Said stereoisomers can be separated using conventional techniques. such preparative gas chromatography or fractional distillation for example. preferably on a rotating band column. or even fractional crystallization. It should however be noted that given the similarity of the organoleptic properties of each of the isomers.
mixtures of isomers can also be used as obtained from the process of the invention.
The compounds of formula 11. used as starting materials in the process of the present invention. can be obtained by a method of treating with isoprene a bicyclic compound of the formula
EMI1.6
in which the symbol R represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl residue containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
This reaction formally consists of a cycloaddition according to Diels-Alder. Said cycloaddition is preferably carried out in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor such as hydroquinone or pyrogallol for example. or a mixture. of varying proportions. of said compounds. Said reaction can also be carried out under an inert atmosphere. under nitrogen or argon, for example. However, such technical improvements are not essential to obtaining high yields of final product.
Although the presence of a catalyst is not essential either. during the cycloaddition reaction. said reaction can be. in some cases. favored by the action of heat or of a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure. Thus, the operation is preferably carried out at a temperature of between approximately 100 and approximately 200 C., more precisely between 150 and 180 C., at a pressure of between approximately 10 and approximately 200 atm.
The above temperature range, like the pressure range, however, may vary beyond the above limits.
The bicyclic compounds mentioned above are generally low cost, readily available, or in some cases readily prepared by known methods commercial products [see for example: Dutch Patent Application No. 6613870].
The present invention is illustrated in more detail with the aid of the example below. In said example, temperatures are given in degrees centigrade.

It was placed in a 10 L flask provided with mechanical stirring.
a thermometer and an introductory ampoule surmounted by a tube of calcium chloride, 1128 g (6 M) of ethylidene-nor bomene, 485 g of sodium acetate and 2000 ml of methylene chloride. The whole was brought, with vigorous stirring, to a temperature of about -5 '. Given this temperature reached, 1150 g (6 M) of a 40% solution of peracetic acid and 15 g of sodium acetate were added over 4 hours. The addition was carried out so as to keep the temperature of the mixture below 0. When the addition of peracetic acid was complete, the reaction mixture was left at room temperature for about 3 hours, then filtered.
The filtrate obtained was then washed with water. then with sodium carbonate (2 x 1000 ml of a 100 / o solution) and finally washed with 2 x 1000 ml of water. The combined organic extracts were then evaporated under reduced pressure to give a residue which, by distillation using a column of the Fischer type, made it possible to obtain the desired product with a yield of 60% (735 g). .
