Chem. Soc. Japon, 46, 2512 (1973)].

The invention relates to the preparation of oxygenated tricyclic compounds of formula
EMI1.1
in which the indices m and n can take one of the values indicated below: a) m = 2, n = 2 c) m = 7, n = 0 e) m = 8, n = 1.
b) m = 6, n = 0 d) m = 8, n = 0
Compounds I are new compounds, appreciated in the art of perfumery and aromas for their organoleptic properties [see on this subject Swiss patent N "586021, patent application N" 8516/74].
The object of the present invention consists of a process for the preparation of the compounds of formula I as defined above, characterized in that an unsaturated bicyclic compound of formula is treated.
EMI1.2
having a double bond in one of the positions indicated by the dotted lines and in which the indices m, n, r and s can take one of the values indicated below: a) m = 2, n = 2, r = 0, s = 2 or r = s = I b) m = 6, n - 0, r - 0, s-2our = s1 c) m = 7, n = 0, r = 0, s = 2our = s = ld) m = 8, n = O, r = O, s = 2 or r = s = le) m = 8, n = l, r - 0, s = 2our = s = l, by means of 'a mixture of acetic acid and paraformaldehyde, in the presence of a strong acid, mineral or organic.
According to a particular implementation of the process of the invention, the unsaturated bicyclic compounds of formula II are treated by means of a mixture, of variable proportions, of acetic acid and of paraformaldehyde, in the presence of a strong mineral acid, such as sulfuric acid for example, or of a strong organic acid, benzenesulfonic or p-toluenesulfonic acid for example. Acetic acid and paraformaldehyde are preferably used in a weight ratio of 10: 1 to 10: 4 approximately.
The acetic acid used in the above process can also contain small amounts of acetic anhydride, of the order of approximately 1 to 5%.
When using p-toluenesulfonic acid, the treatment of compound II can be carried out at a temperature between 80 "and the boiling point of the acetic acid / paraformaldehyde mixture. The operation is preferably carried out at about 100, in conditions analogous to those described for the treatment of monocyclic olefins [see on this subject Liebigs Ann. Chem. 1973, 1797].
When using sulfuric acid, on the other hand, the operation is carried out at a temperature of between about 20 and 400, preferably close to 40, under conditions similar to those given for the treatment of monocyclic olefins [see Bull. .
Chem. Soc. Japan, 46, 2512 (1973)].
Thus, for example, by starting with bicyclo [9.2.0] tridec1 (4) -ene or bicyclo [9.2.0] tridéc-1 3-ene, one obtains with good yields, according to the method of present invention, 3-oxa tricyclo [l I. 3.0.01 14] hexadec-l 3-en.
The unsaturated bicyclic compounds of formula II, used as starting materials in the above process, can be obtained by means of known methods, as indicated in detail within the examples illustrating the present invention.
A subject of the invention is also the use of compounds I as obtained according to the above process, as starting products for the preparation of oxygenated tricyclic compounds of formula

in which the indices m and n can take one of the values indicated below: a) m = 2, n = 2 c) m = 7, n = 0 e) m = 8, n = lb) m = 6 , n = 0 d) m = 8, n = 0 characterized in that said compound I.
Said reduction is carried out according to methods known in organic chemistry, preferably by catalytic hydrogenation. According to a particular implementation, said hydrogenation is carried out at ambient pressure, in the presence of a metal catalyst such as platinum oxide, Raney nickel or palladium on carbon.
Thus, 3-oxa-tricyclo [11.3.0.0 "14jhexadecane can
be readily obtained by hydrogenation of 3-oxa-tricyclo
[11.3.0.0l '4] -hexadéc-13-ene in an ethanolic medium, in the presence of palladium on carbon.
The present invention will be illustrated in more detail with the aid of the examples below, examples in which the temperatures are indicated in degrees centigrade.
